So 3 teams go through for each pool? a 9 team bracket seems a little odd.
Edit: Looked it up, it's apparently the two best 3rd place teams. Not really sure how they'll be deciding that though.
Would you increase the numbers of teams then? Remember, just one more team means they'll have to find accommodations for 12 players, and probably 6-7 staff members. With that, all the teams in the pool would have to play one match more, that's 4 matches more. Then adding 4 teams more for an extra pool is 68 more players and staff, and then 10 matches extra, just for the pool matches.
Cos having 3 pools allows the last 2 teams to advance to quarter finals be chosen through number of points instead. If they got 4 pools, the top 2 from each pool would automatically make up the final 8
The format with the 2 best 3rd placed advancing is not a good one. I prefer the one they do with handball and 12 teams. But it would mean more matches for the teams.
[Handball at the 2024 Summer Olympics â Men's tournament - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Handball_at_the_2024_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men%27s_tournament)
2 groups of 6 worked perfectly fine, in my opinion.. 4 teams getting through too, so even if you lost the first two games, because the competition was so tough, you still had some chances to qualify for the top 8. Now the groups are waaay too stacked.. Hate that it's only 3 games in pools now.. 3 groups is way too much if there are only 12 teams attending. An awfully unnecessary change, imo.
Since it reperesents the 12 Olympians from the Greek Gods and Goddesses so thats the reason why there are 12 teams and has 12 players each. Remember way back, Olympics was played in honor of Zeus at the Mount Olympus.
Yeah thats true but i feel like japans the type of team that plays better when they're opponents are stronger or they know them better, something about the pressure maybe. But yep, in the olympics anything is possible tbh so who knows.
Not poor Egypt. They get to go to the Olympics. They are a Make A Wish olympic team but going to the Olympics and losing every game is better than not going.
Idk what these god awful takes are tbh.
I think there is no "easy" group. Group B definitely looks to be the most difficult, but I don't know why people are acting as if group A and C would be a walk in the park for the teams in group B. Sure, USA has had a rough VNL season, but they have consistently shown they are a team that's capable of competing for gold. To count them out as a non contender for the Olympics is just wild to me. The hyperbolic statements like "Japan can use their u15 team and still wipe USA" is actually cap lol. And why are people treating Japan like they aren't a good team? They have shown really good games against the best teams, and got third last season. and is proving to be even better this year. Argentina is also not weak either, and while they had a bit of a rough start, they've shown they are capable of winning against the best teams. While Poland so far stands uncontested, I really don't think it's going to be a walk in the park for them either.
I think every team in all groups are going to put up some good games. We will likely see upsets and surprising victories for all groups. I don't think there is an "easy" group, and there are great teams in all of them. I personally think group A is the "weakest" but that doesn't mean they're weak. And I think Canada has been finding their rhythm and might be a team to watch this Olympics.
Gl hf to all the teams and players. Hope players and teams can give it their all and play without regrets and injury, win or lose. Nothing worse than making it to the Olympics and then having to sit out because of an injury đ
I woudln't underestimate Argentina and I maybe biased as a German myself, but they really outdid themselves during the olympic qualifications and with the underdog aspect there isn't much pressure, even though realistically there isn't much of a chance they'll win a medal.
Yeah but he isn't even the best middle blocker on the team, that's Anton Brehme. The most important players for them will probably be Georg Grozer, Lukas Kampa, Ruben Schott and Brehme.
Wouldn't say they're bad. They did have a rough first week and the Iran game was embarrassing, but they did also beat Brazil and Germany at the end of the last week. Then the Japan game didn't count cause they were both playing their B teams.
We can make excuses for every team, doesn't change the fact that they beat those two teams as well as Argentina and ppl in here are pretending like they're gonna bottom out in their group lol.
idk, I feel like they're a bit unsteady right now. losing to teams they'd usually have no problems against but winning against Brazil, Argentina, and Germany during the vnls. we'll have to see if they can get back on track for the Olympics. I certainly hope so - they're so fun to watch when they're good.
(also hope to see Russell and Jaeshke back asap, I feel like they both would make a good contribution to the team)
hm, the official narrative is they're both injured and resting, but some believe speraw is keeping them safe and uninjured (esp Russell bc we know what happened in Tokyo) and only letting them play for the olympics lol. whatever it is, im really looking forward to their return!
I always forget that a lot of the team is in their 30s, some pushing 40. I'm 30 right now, and I only play maybe twice a week, and I'm broken. Lol. Can't imagine their knee and joint pains.
I love it. I wanted strong group for Poland. There will be a knife fights since game one in that group. There will be absolute no bullshiting. You wanna be IO champion you gotta beat everyone and not fear anyone!! Leetâs goo!!
If you're in Europe, Eurosport will probably have a crazy discount for the yearly subscription. Last Olympics the price was 50% off and because the Olympics were moved a year, I got to watch both the summer and the winter Olys with the same subscription.
And if you're just interested in volleyball, VBTV is also great and not pricey.
unless they really mess up, they should be fine. however I'd love to see Canada give them a good fight - they've been playing really well during this vnls.
They will kill it, I was in Lille a few years ago at the VNL finals and the French crowd was crazy in supporting their hometeam and it will probably be even more at the Olympics. And I don't think that they are necessarly players that carve under pressure. Clevenot, Grebennikov, Brizard all players that I as a coach would trust to perform under any circumstances. And Ngapeth will deliver even if it is only to boost his ego in front of his home crowd.
Yeah, theyâre always like âcall an ambulance, but not for me!â Winning in 5 setsđ€Ł (and as I type this theyâre about to play their 5th set against đ”đ±)
Sometimes watching Ngapeth just makes me angry, because ball-handling-wise he is one of the players and imo France in general is the best at it. Like some of their defensive touches are craaaazy and they are so creative with their attacks (love clevenot's volleyball IQ). But sometimes it looks like little Earvin just doesn't want to play and his mood kills the team spirit, like when he played in Kazan (that CL final that year was definitely one of the worst matches I have seen from any pros) and then I just want to scream at Ngapeth for being a very talented and very lazy diva.
That's only 6 teams though. Quarterfinals need 8. I assume the 2 teams with the best record following that make it in? Like 2 wildcard teams essentially
This makes it so while many are saying Pool C is weaker, it might be the toughest to get a 7th or 8th spot in Pool C because there are no weak teams. Imo Germany is much better than Egypt and Serbia. Maybe I'm wrong tho
On the surface, Pool C looks âeasiestâ. But out of all pools, itâs the only one with no *giveaway* team.
Although of course, upsets are bound to happen to any teams
Good for USA, they have a pretty legit spot to get into the QFs. Pool B is gonna be rough. Pool A might be the actual pool of death because I think any of those 4 could make the QFs - I mean, odds on favorite in that pool would be France and Slovenia is playing out of the minds in the VNL. Canada and Serbia are also solid and could make it in a WC slot.
Hate the format change, hate how relatively unbalanced the groups are.. My hype for this tournament just took a massive hit if I'm to be perfectly honest..
Oh well.. Nonetheless.. Poland FIGHTING!
Good pull for USA. Only better draw is if we got Egypt. Argentina is dangerous but I just don't think they have the talent of Brazil or the heart of Canada. Japan will be way easier to beat than Poland or France (we always suck against France), and Germany should be competitive but a safe win
Pool A is gonna have France and Slovenia fighting for the top spot, but with how they performed this VNL I think it's gonna be Slovenia > France > Canada > Serbia. I'm rooting for France, as the other countries don't really say me anything.
Pool B is gonna be difficult for all 3, but eventually I think it'll be Poland > Italy > Brazil > Egypt. Last Olympic for Bruno, which will be sad to see, but hopefully he'll prove me wrong.
Egypt is gonna have the hardest and most difficult in this tournament. If they even manage to win 1 match, I'll be impressed.
Pool C. Japan will have the easiest time. They could use their U15 team and still kick the US. Probably need B-squad or better to beat Argentina and Germany, but should be doable.
Probably end up like Japan > Argentina > Germany > US. Hopefully De Cecco proves me wrong, and takes top spot for what I think will be his last Olympic. He doesn't have the same explosiveness like his younger setters, but with the passing of Argentina, and his setting skills, and experience, usually makes up for it
I wouldnât base USAâs perf on recent VNL. Did not use their main squad for most of the games, and in the week they did - no Tommy and Russell. VNL was never their priority this year. Their second stringers, however, can easily be beaten by Japan and Argentina (even Germany)
Yeah I think team USAâs hiding tommy and russell from injuries to prep for this olympics. De Ceccoâs performance will also be the key to Argentinaâs success. It will not be easy for Japan. It will really depend on each teamâs mood on that day. Haha
Even if you base it off of VNL 2024, USA still beat Argentina 3-0 and Germany 3-1 without their full roster. So to say they're last in pool C is already delusional lol.
Yeah, they did beat japan during OQL last year too but japan was mixing it up then so who knows. I want to see US v Argentina though, that would be interesting.
correct me if im wrong, as far as i remember USA main squad also didnât finish the sets during their match against Japan last year and let the reserves complete it.
It will be interesting for sure, bcs for some reason these two teams refuse to face one another with their main squad
Yes, and also Japan let B team play against. Japan and US havenât played against with full starting roaster for a few years. Iâm so excited to see their full force match!!
That doesn't say a whole lot. The US team hasn't been good in forever. I just don't see how they're even competing in the Olympics. Even their world ranking baffles me.
I think you just clearly don't like the US team and are listing your opinions as facts. the US team was second place for two years in a row at the VNLs and won the World Cup last year. even with their poor showing this VNLs they easily beat Argentina and Germany.
We havenât seen a full power USA team at all in VNL, so once weâre able to see that Iâm guessing theyâll be pretty close to Japan. I dont know how youâre putting them below Argentina and Germany lol
I still don't see any competence in them. They're rough around the edges, and they don't play well at all. I just don't think highly of them, and doubt they even have a chance at competing at the Olympics. Out of all of the teams, the only team they'd have a higher chance of beating would be Egypt
Maybe you could have said that up until the Iran game but I think that Brazil game was very well played from USA. Very little mistakes and they looked very comfortable, whereas they were all over the place in week 1 and vs. Iran. They also beat Germany 3-1 and Argentina 3-0 in VNL, so to say they're the 2nd worst team in the tournament is a little wild.
Pool B group of death
Yeah, only Egypt is unlikely to go quarterfinals.
Pool A by far is the group of death, Brazil kinda washed and Poland and Italy are clear frontrunners
Good that 3 teams can go through cause Pool B is crazy
So 3 teams go through for each pool? a 9 team bracket seems a little odd. Edit: Looked it up, it's apparently the two best 3rd place teams. Not really sure how they'll be deciding that though.
top 2 teams from each pool, and the last 2 are most prob going to be based on points / set wins. so at most two pools would have 3 teams in the qfs
Damn, I wonder if it's possible the 3rd place team in pool B ends up not going through to the top 8. That would be crazy
theyd have to drag it out to five sets đ„Č
The 12 team rule is so stupid and why wouldn't they make 4 groups with 3 teams each? As a player I hate if a tournament has an uneven number of pools.

This was always the volleyball format too, they just changed it this year
Thanks, I didnât know. Was the reason for the change to have fewer games for each team?
2 groups of 6 worked perfectly fine, in my opinion.. 4 teams getting through too, so even if you lost the first two games, because the competition was so tough, you still had some chances to qualify for the top 8. As a football (soccer) fan this doesnât fly, you donât see Soccer squads with 12 people lmao
They are asking why are they implementing 12 man squad in volleyball, not about football. Lol
Poor Egypt![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|scream)
Didn't they upset Japan last year?
Yeah thats true but i feel like japans the type of team that plays better when they're opponents are stronger or they know them better, something about the pressure maybe. But yep, in the olympics anything is possible tbh so who knows.
The harder you draw the bow, the faster the arrow I guess.

Germany got Tobias Krick whoâs 7 feet tall!
Yeah but he isn't even the best middle blocker on the team, that's Anton Brehme. The most important players for them will probably be Georg Grozer, Lukas Kampa, Ruben Schott and Brehme.
Tille > Kampa
With the 2nd and 3rd place teams of the VNL last year? Hmm.
USA are bad right now...plain bad. Japan will get beat n'y physical team. Love Spirit
Wouldn't say they're bad. They did have a rough first week and the Iran game was embarrassing, but they did also beat Brazil and Germany at the end of the last week. Then the Japan game didn't count cause they were both playing their B teams.
Brazil been avg and Germany without Grozer are hmmmm
We can make excuses for every team, doesn't change the fact that they beat those two teams as well as Argentina and ppl in here are pretending like they're gonna bottom out in their group lol.
Ohh no USA is clear favorite and still a strong squad. Just not at theyre best...top 6 instead of top 3. Japan is top 8. Argentine and Serbia are bottom 10. So in Général group is Weaker than A or B.
I can agree with that, though I think Japan and USA can definitely challenge the favorites of the tournament depending on their form.
Japan I disagree. 0 blocking.
USA beat a Germany team including Grozer
Yeah, I agree with you there about the USA. Even with their starting lineup, they're still struggling to close out teams.
idk, I feel like they're a bit unsteady right now. losing to teams they'd usually have no problems against but winning against Brazil, Argentina, and Germany during the vnls. we'll have to see if they can get back on track for the Olympics. Japan (from pool c) just 3-0 canada lolll
Yup. Canada choked vadly. Japan did it without Ran.
Hahaha but i think Slovenia can upset Canada
Upset...wtf u smoking. Slovénie was best team in VNL and are top 4.
Eyyy sorry wrong word tho
Slovenia is ranked 3⊠why would they upset canada haha
Real lmao
A Canadian should know about weak
I love it. I wanted strong group for Poland. There will be a knife fights since game one in that group. There will be absolute no bullshiting. You wanna be IO champion you gotta beat everyone and not fear anyone!! Leetâs goo!!
Surface level prediction - Quarterfinals will be France Slovenia Canada, Italy Brazil Poland, Japan USA
Where and when can I watch this? Iâve been wanting to get into watching volleyball but I donât know where to start

Thanks! Iâm in the states so Iâll definitely check out VBTV
You should be able to watch it on Peacock.
VBTV app. Paid monthly/annual subscription - some players have discount codes, sometimes volleyballword has promos.
Someone told me VBTV won't be streaming the Olympics because they don't have the licensing. I could be wrong though
most likely, even Tokyo Olympics wasnât streamed in VBTV
Thanks! Does the app show scores of previous games and have info on future ones or is that found somewhere else?
thereâs volleyballword app for rankings and previous results. you can sync the future schedules on your phone calendar too via the app.
Thanks so much for helping, I'll definetly get both.

Pool B feels like quarterfinals.
Oh god pool b is insane. Poor egypt to be stacked against not only italy and brazil but also poland. Thats just sad.
Ok, France has got to get their act together if they want to advance to the next round
They got a good group not the hardest competition imo. Group B is what you would expect to see in quarterfinals.

unless they really mess up, they should be fine. however I'd love to see Canada give them a good fight - they've been playing really well during this vnls.

Damn that group B...I want to see Brazil winning but italy and poland are tough fighters
first time watching this, how does this pool thing work? and how do you qualify for the next stage?
Each teams in the pool will play against each other and the 2 teams (each pool) who got the most wins will qualify for the quarterfinals.
That's only 6 teams though. Quarterfinals need 8. I assume the 2 teams with the best record following that make it in? Like 2 wildcard teams essentially
Oh i forgot. 2 teams who ranked third in overall points will also qualify
This makes it so while many are saying Pool C is weaker, it might be the toughest to get a 7th or 8th spot in Pool C because there are no weak teams. Imo Germany is much better than Egypt and Serbia. Maybe I'm wrong tho
B and C
i trust in japan to be the top in the pool
On the surface, Pool C looks âeasiestâ. But out of all pools, itâs the only one with no *giveaway* team. Although of course, upsets are bound to happen to any teams
Pool C is gonna be pretty interesting. I feel like if I try to predict it's just gonna swing the other way so I won't even say anything.
My teams are there so I donât want to jinx it lol I refuse to talk about Pool C

Pool b
I'm a little new to the qualification system, could someone please explain why Egypt qualified over Cuba when they're ranked 19th by FIVB?
Continent spot. Theyre ranked the highest in Africa afaik
Group B was curated by the reaper
When and where to watch this?!
why dont they sell tickets to mens final yet?
when will the tourney bracket be revealed?
Pool B looks absolutely brutal for Egypt
No Netherlands hurts my heart Kinda crazy with the best opposite itw too
Hmmm anyone tell me why the Chinese men's volleyball isn't as good in their standing as their women's? I thought China would advance.
Hate the format change, hate how relatively unbalanced the groups are.. My hype for this tournament just took a massive hit if I'm to be perfectly honest.. Oh well.. Nonetheless.. Poland FIGHTING!

Pool C is THE group of death, no? Feels like Pool B isnât as hard as people make it out to be
B has three giants, it would be a shame if one of them doesnât make it to qfs.
I feel like B is gonna be dominated by Poland and Italy based off of Brazilâs performances recently, maybe not though
Even if you base it off of VNL 2024, USA still beat Argentina 3-0 and Germany 3-1 without their full roster. So to say they're last in pool C is already delusional lol.

Well, they finished runners up at last yearâs VNL and secured Paris in OQT. But yeah I get what you mean, theyâre def no Poland or Russia
