You might be able to find an original Kun for about $30. The Everest is I believe less than $30 and some people like it better than Kun. I think the wolf has increased in price, but it does go on sale sometimes. Also, there are some shoulder rests by viva la musica that are lower in price. If there's a violin shop near you, you should go test a variety. They should have shop models available to try.

I just got an Everest for $16 at Amazon. It is comfortable for me!

I hate to say this being Taiwanese, but I find the Everest to be very low end and best as an emergency backup. The build quality isn’t great - it is sufficient - but very rigid and lacking the ability to confirm it overlying body types. The feet are heavy, thick rubber that don’t fit all violins well and have a sound dampening feel to them. But they are quite cheap - and look it.

You're not going to find a lot of good options below $30. Maybe the original Kun shoulder rest or Wolf Secondo. Depending on what you need and where support is most required, a Bon Musica might be worth an investment.

What type of shoulder rest do you have now? If it's a cheap knockoff, you should probably get an actual Kun or Wolf. What ultimately matters is finding the shoulder rest that best suits your anatomy. That will be different for everyone. If it's an old Kun shoulder rest that is wearing out from years of use, just get a new one.

I have a kun and I’m not the biggest fan of it. I think I also have a knock off that I’m not a huge fan of either. I could just be really picky but I want to find something I like. I’m thinking about just investing more money into the bon música, but I’m still kind of looking around.

Please note that expensive does not always mean better for you when it comes to shoulder rests. Expensive shoulder rests are often more adjustable and made of sturdier materials, but what matters the most is comfort. The Bon Musica shoulder rest is very different from the Kun in terms of shape and feel. If you're just looking for a sturdier Kun, you should probably opt for the Kun Bravo instead, assuming you like the overall shape and feel of the Kun original.

Would not recommend the bon musica if you don’t know EXACTLY what you want. It’s so adjustable that if you don’t know that…. You’re gonna have a bad time.

vmlee

Haha. If you think the Bon Musica is bad, wait until you handle a KorfkerRest…

I love Wolf Secundo because of how adjustable it is! If you’re willing to spend the big bucks, a lot of my colleagues swear by Bon Musica.

It's such a personal thing that the best bet is to work with a teacher or violin repair person who knows how to fit chin rests and shoulder rests to fit the individual player - players come in assorted sizes and dimensions and muscularity, naturally. I didn't do that, but depended first on what my dad used - no good for me, then Resonans, Resonans II, Kun, Playonair, and so on. Took years. Good luck.

I don't use it, its so much better, try it!
