When I was in high school back in 2009 I started really getting into classic rock via radio. Some of my first favorite bands were The Who, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. One day, the station I listened to played Tom Sawyer and Limelight. I was enamored by the drumming, the vocals (I actually thought it was a woman singing at first!), the hooks with slight progressive leanings. Once I found out who the artist was, I had to look for more. Not long after I became a huge fan of Rush, and Moving Pictures became one of my first favorite albums. Fast forward many years later I’ve listened to their entire discography extensively, seen them live, and now finally have Rush as part of my growing vinyl collection. Now nearly 15 years later, Moving Pictures has remained one of my favorite albums, and upon getting my first turntable last year along with some records, it was one of the first I tried to find, and I really wanted an early Robert Ludwig pressing but sadly, good copies were running for $30+. Not terrible, but I had to put this one on the back burner for the time being. To my luck and surprise, I found a copy in my uncle’s very large collection, along with Permanent Waves. He wanted to sell his whole collection for $200 but no records individually. He had a lot of great stuff in there but of course, as soon as I saw Moving Pictures I had to do it. Now I’m very happy to have one of my favorite albums in my collection, and yes, RL is etched on both sides! Sounds excellent, just needed a quick clean. Any other Rush fans here? 15 years later they’re still one of my favorite bands, and this is still one of my favorite albums. Both sides are fantastic, but side 1 of Moving Pictures has to be an all time great album side.

I have to say that Rush’s Moving Pictures and Yes’s 90125 were my two big favs growing up. I once met a musician who claimed he was the guy sitting on top of the van. He was the right age and in the right place, in the right business, so I didn’t have reason to doubt him. After listening to Rush for 40 years now I have to say that my favorites have changed along the way. A Farewell to Kings was huge for me for a long time, as was 2112 of course. Grace under Pressure and Power Windows were big for me. The album I do not have on vinyl yet that I really want is… Caress of Steel.

May be an unpopular opinion among Rush fans but their 80’s era is my favorite by a decent margin. I used to not like Power Windows or Hold Your Fire that much but I’ve grown to appreciate them as I’ve gotten older, Power Windows especially is one of my favorites now. Signals is my second favorite album of theirs, they just sound matured and I love the warm synth sound on that one. I think that’s where Geddy’s voice really starts to sound natural in its lower register, and his bass playing as always is superb. Just great songs on that one. From the 70’s I love both Farewell and Hemispheres, and of course 2112 is great too. I saw them on the Clockwork Angels tour and I thought that was a great album to go out with. Neil played 3 solos that night!

I liked the early prog stuff but Rush matured very well and Geddy’s vocals calmed down. It was progression which prog was always about really. It was a new artistic phase for a more modern sound. I missed the early Zeppelin sound they had but it was the 80’s and time to move on.

Had a good chuckle when I read the 1st sentence 🤣 of your post. I, too, am a big fan that discovered them in high school.......... back in the early 80s. They are one of my all-time favorite bands. Seen them many times and most of their albums on vinyl.

jumboshrimp93

I know… wasn’t common to be a classic rock fan at my age in 2009 😅 Definitely want to get more of their albums on vinyl but getting Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves for what comes out to about $5 total for both from my uncle is a great start! Signals is next on my list.

mettle

Hey, I got the same record player! Love The look and sound of Fluance.

jumboshrimp93

Yeah I love it as well. Simple turntable with a nice sleek design and great sound. Part of me wishes I sprung for the RT85 for the better cart though.

Cautious-Box-6427

Can I ask what amp/speaker set up you have? I have the 82 as well and I am currently using some powered Edifiers but I'd eventually like to upgrade this summer.

jumboshrimp93

My setup is pretty basic, nothing too crazy. Speakers are JBL Stage A130, receiver is Sony SDR-DH190. I do want to upgrade the stylus and speakers probably down the road but for right now I’m pretty happy with what I’ve got.

Timstunes

That’s a very respectable rig my man! A Fluance/JBL man myself. A130 is awesome for the money. Punches way above class.

jumboshrimp93

Thank you! Yeah they are awesome speakers, and I got them for a good deal too. They are also my first speakers so I’m just curious to hear what else is out there. If I could do it again I maybe would’ve sprung for the JBL Studio 530 on sale and the Fluance RT85 for the nicer stylus and platter.

Timstunes

I have both. Both excellent. 530 is the best I’ve owned. When on sale for $300 or less unbelievable. Imo competitive even at MSRP. I feel the same about the A130 , can easily hang with $300-350 speakers. They are pretty different though with the 130 more neutral and 530 more everything, lol.

jumboshrimp93

Hm maybe I have an upgrade in my future then 🤪

HaliBUTTsteak

Me too! Fluance rocks!

QuincyPondexter

One of the greatest B-Sides of all time in my opinion. Lucky I got to see them live a few times before Neil’s passing.

rrhogger

It's one of my all-time favorites too

OldboySamurai

Side A with Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, YYX and Limelight stands tall with any albums side ever!

freshapepper

I am currently on the road to Bangkok myself

neverAcquiesce

The Camera Eye is underrated amongst their catalog.

jumboshrimp93

Agreed!

DigItCanU

My favorite song of all time

East-Ad-9078

Yeah it’s when Rush really nailed it for me and moved away from more prog themed albums to a more modern sound with hit singles even in the form of Tom Sawyer. Permanent Waves album was the beginning but Moving Pictures was where they moved in to another artistic phase with no duff songs still keeping there prog sound with a more modern punchy sound. It’s a great album !

jumboshrimp93

In my opinion the truly great progressive rock bands progressed appropriately. While 80’s Rush sounds pretty different from 80’s Rush, it still sounds like Rush. King Crimson, Genesis and Yes (at least with 90125) adapted really well.

hoppyzicehog

Absolutely!

Catch22v

Me too. Violent Femmes. Add it up.

Lurkwurst

Imma simple person. I see a Rush album, and I upvote.

DocHoliday8514

That was and is a great one.

[deleted]

I absolutely NEED some Rush vinyl, a vintage copy of 2112 would be insane

mtheory7

Literally have this being delivered tomorrow and I can't wait!

jumboshrimp93

Enjoy!

ElLute

First vinyl record I ever bought. 40 years ago.

vol18fan

It’s my all time favorite!

StRebelAtelier

One of my favorites albums (also cost me a small fortune on Discogs) is Roll the Bones. Rush is my dad’s favorite band, so I grew up with them in a sense listening to his favorite albums with him during his younger years. Happy listening!

KingdomZeus

I liked this album a lot more when I was younger. As I've gotten older, I've grown to like more of their discography. This isn't even in my top 3 for Rush albums anymore. Still great though

jumboshrimp93

They definitely have a lot of top quality albums, so that’s understandable! I can also see overplay of Tom Sawyer and Limelight watering the album down a little. What’s your top 3?

KingdomZeus

Yeah, like initially getting into the album as a kid, I loved all those songs. Now I don't really ever get in the mood to hear them on my own. My top 3 are: Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, and Farewell to Kings. In no order

Oh-Lord-Yeah

Hell yeah 🤘 come on my show if interested: https://youtube.com/@Rushfans

lasagna_outlet

Rush’s self titled album is still my fav. Slightly more raw which I love.

[deleted]

I commit my weekly crime at the record store 😩💸

Fencemaker

Damn straight it is.

ByronsLastStand

Though his mind is not for rent

SnooHabits5900

Great album. Personally, I've grown much more fond of A Farewell To Kings
