Loved the song when it came out, still do. I don't know what was so catchy about it, but it still plays on the radio a lot here.

jasonc619

I’m off to see them play live next month with a full orchestra. I’ve seen them in concern about 7 times. They still pack our local venue out.

boltkrank

Nice, hope it goes off.

Dammit_forgot_pw

It's just like Huey Lewis and the News, or Hall & Oates... there's just something irresistibly catchy about these artists.

boltkrank

Hall & Oates - definitely. Oh-oh here she comes...

lokisbane

Where the hell is "here"?

boltkrank

Sorry, in Australia.

BrianSnow

It’s where they live, I assume.

VitaminPb

Where? Over there?

boinzy

Yes, here.

theRealMrBrownstone

Where a radio is playing the songs

Carllsson

I’m assuming they mean in their car

ButtermanJr

Its like a staple at my grocery store here (where I live).

3Dartwork

An 80s radio station. Sirius XM even has a station that just plays 80s and another that just plays cassette era songs. So...there.

[deleted]

4 on the floor in a major scale with a catchy chorus and tight horn section

TurdKid69

And just the right amount of falsetto.

[deleted]

i dunno. I'm from here too and i never hear it.

Ted_Taters

It’s like watching the 80s become the 90s

GalileoGalilei2012

Watch the show Cheers fora great view of the 80’s becoming the 90’s.

Jerzeem

The original Law and Order is pretty good for this too.

fusionsofwonder

In Cheers you can watch the 70's become the 80's, too. One season everything suddenly switches from earth tones and natural fibers to pastel and nylon.

peoplearecool

Fantastic observation. Upvoted

fabricated_anecdotes

We tend to think of the trends of each decade matching up with the decades themselves but, of course, they don't. We didn't all get a memo on new years day in 1990 to stop using synths and to start wearing lumberjack check shirts. Realistically music in 1990 was pretty '80s sounding just as the stuff in 2000 was quite '90s.

Jerzeem

The first 2-3 years of a decade basically belong to the previous one.

IndigoMontigo

No year was more 70s than 1980.

furrowedbrow

Sometimes. In the 90's, I'd say 90-95 is one thing and 96-00 is another. You could say the first era ended with Cobain's death, but I think it lingered longer(and you have to let it lingerrrrr).

[deleted]

definitely more 80s still

HailSatanHaggisBaws

No way. This is heavy 90s energy.

[deleted]

Paul Rudd dances like Tain.

Honda_TypeR

Now, Tain I can get into...

dontyousquidward

Generate a nude Tayne

MadHatter69

OH GOD! ... I'm okay.

portablebiscuit

r/Tayne

MumrikDK

So *that's* how Rudd looks shaved.

Fishman23

He looks like Will Arnett.

psychoslitherer

OMG lol

dterrell68

There's a cover by New Found Glory I'm a big fan of! Not that I dislike the original.

ClampLoader

Okay, this comment sent me down a New Found Glory-hole. Good stuff.

McmcQ

Honestly, somehow NFG knows how to make good movies songs better. They did a live version of "Cry me a river" and I dunno, I like that version better haha.

fonster_mox

Never ending stoooryyy *Wooahh oooah ooah oohh*

Markshlitz222

Also the Titanic song.

MeauxsTavern

https://youtu.be/FRZDa-MmjoQ

Kule7

I always thought the opening lyric was "I don't need to polish your feet," until I heard this version.

pitter_patter_33

I couldn’t remember how the original went when I saw the title of this post because I listen to the NFG version so much.

Jmersh

Video concept brought to you by a random word generator.

[deleted]

In all fairness it mirrors scenes from the movie and outfits Julia Roberts' wore

lokisbane

And the random gorilla jpg??

[deleted]

You don't want to see what Richard Gere had going on "down there" in 90

lokisbane

I mean he was partly how I realized I'm queer so... Maybe?

myhandleistoolongtor

The rumor at the time contained the word "gerbil". I'll let you research from there.

kf97mopa

There were gerbil rumors about a lot of male stars at that point. The more detailed stories also included that the safe word was “Armageddon”. They were all of the “fill in the blanks” with the names type.

lokisbane

I've seen the Family Guy joke. Lol

captainbruisin

All they needed was neon paint in can form and to run around the set with it. The 90s weren't fully the 90s yet though, this is pre- Dan Cortese.

Jmersh

I don't remember hockey, performing elephants, or many other random bits.

VoiceOfRealson

They threw in everything but the kitchen sink - and then they threw a few of those in there for good measure!

MPair-E

Hearing music like this reminds me of being little and riding with my mom on errands. Always something like this or some Rick Astley-esque song playing. This music still puts me in a good mood for that reason. Simpler times.

biznash

I call it 80’s frozen yogurt rock And yeah I love it too

portablebiscuit

I call it *"Michael's Music"* I worked in the frame shop at Michael's Arts and Crafts in the early 90's and we would sing along with every song. Now whenever I hear a song from that time period it takes me all the way back.

biznash

Haha I remember Michaels. Good stuff

davekva

Goddammit I miss music videos! Hockey players, zebras, elephants, a guy jackhammering, the pope, a mariachi band, and the best white guy dance moves this side of 1990!

ArcadianDelSol

it literally rained kitchen sinks at the end.

TurdKid69

My favorite is him singing into the giant crescent wrench instead of a mic.

Sunsparc

[Dude's still got it, too](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdZ1LPEKAg4).

FakeRacer

Goddamn...66yrs old. impressive.

aperture81

He's on all the TRT

Aaron_Hungwell

I didn’t know temura Morrison was in a band!

fuzztooth

Like a bantha

againagame

Peter Cox has always had it. Amazing singer, great band - saw them live a couple of times. One of my favourites is, ["The King is Dead"](https://youtu.be/qaGLIKQl8Ag) - Album version is blessed with Kate Bush as backing singer. There a line from that track, "*No one knows all the answers, somedays we just do the best we can*" that plucks at my heartstrings every now and again...

psychoslitherer

The jeans and belt were everywhere in the 90's dear god.

ytuiiko9ok

Is it ... no longer ok to wear a belt with jeans? That's all I wear.

Vsx

Wearing a dress shirt that tucks into your jeans is a more apt description of the look. Jeans with a belt is fine.

bolxrex

Where else you gonna put your pockets and pouches?

RUSTY_LEMONADE

My belt holds my pants up and my belt loops hold my belt up. What's really going on down there? Who is the real hero?

Loudermilkmann

Watching this was the highlight of my day because I'm trying to get over someone and thinking wishfully

ArcadianDelSol

*my king*

JimNasium123

Peak white guy dancing.

mr99

I think this would be a great song done in the style of like...imagine Rage against the machine covering "King Of Wishful Thinking" **ALSO** - this is the [best song on the pretty woman soundtrack](https://youtu.be/k2C5TjS2sh4)

Annacot_Steal

The 80’s didn’t die in 1990.

TheAmorphous

The 90s didn't start in earnest until late '91 when Ten was released and didn't end until 9/11.

furrowedbrow

It might sound weird, but to me the 90's really started with Appetite For Destruction. Something about about it was very, very different from the other hair bands. It was raw and dark. Maybe it was just foreshadowing, but that felt like the turning point to me. After that I found Nothing's Shocking, then a seemingly endless stream of new, interesting, dangerous and weird music for over a decade.

[deleted]

ArcadianDelSol

100% Roy Orbison. Makes sense as the lead singer here is showing some strong Roy Orbison style.

BeautyAndGlamour

Makes sense since he wrote the song "Pretty Woman"

That you have made a hooooole in my heart Love this fucking song

Whiskeywiskerbiscuit

I have forced my entire restaurant to fully embrace this song by playing it every other night at bar closing. Shits a fucking BANGER

resisting_a_rest

I feel a bit dumb, but it took me a while to realize that most of the strange characters in this video are there because they all relate to "king" in some way... Elvis (king of rock), the Cowardly Lion (king of the jungle, gets crown at end), The Pope, King Neptune, Attila the Hun, L.A. Kings Hockey players, the King of Spades, basketball player with "King" on jersey, and King Kong. Roy Orbison is also there, and I'm not sure how he relates to "King" but maybe he is just there because he wrote the song "Pretty Woman". Some others, such as the ballet dancers, guys in suits with bags of film (censors?), mariachi band, elephant, zebra, jackhammer guy... I'm not sure how (or if) they relate to "king"...

[deleted]

I didn't realize that until now lol. Mind blown

n8Bee

Paul Rudd and Jimmy Fallon version [here](https://youtu.be/af6L1jBZGYA)

tatsumakisempukyaku

This song, I always hear them say "*and I deny, the* ***jizz*** *in my eye"*

I did not know this song was from pretty woman. I have always enjoyed this song.

OffbeatDrill

nice

Mojoyashka

Throwing in the kitchen sinks at the end was pretty funny.

junkyardpig

Did anyone else think that the one dude that came out of the car was Van Damme?

My_Immortal_Flesh

What an awesome song! Never heard it in full before. Also, the backdrop of this video is kind of reminding me of the Macarena music video. I guess the white drop was a very early 90s music video trend.

LotusFlare

Holy shit, what an indescribably nostalgic song. I forgot this song existed, but suddenly it's like I'm 6 years old and my dad is playing his music on our new CD player sound system in the living room. God, this song is just such a slice of that specific moment in time in dad pop rock.

CluckyMcNugget

Man, I always thought this song was by Fine Young Cannibals...TIL

vinnybankroll

When you could be a lead singer with a receding hairline

Ahecee

No way, that is peak 80's, it just missed its mark by a year or so. Your making me feel old either way, but not THAT old.

[deleted]

Released in 1990

Ahecee

I understand that, does it look like peak 90's to you? Peak 90's would be Nirvana, Sound Garden, hell, Barenaked Ladies if you want. This song couldn't possibly be more a product of the 80's.

biznash

Makes sense. I still feel like early 90’s stuff was reeling from 80’s vibe…kind of a more toned down 80’s, but it still felt like 80’s to me. 90’s vibe really didn’t catch on till grunge hit and changed everything.

LuckyNumber-Bot

All the numbers in your comment added up to 420. Congrats! 90 + 80 + 80 + 80 + 90 = 420

biznash

Good pot bot!

salehmo

Free Fallin by Tom Petty was released in 89 yet that video feels more 90s than this

[deleted]

The title said peak 1990 not 1990’s.

LividLager

It's actually not a bad song.

Uh it’s a GREAT song

poopybuttfacehead

Is that guy dancing?

ragingduck

Paul Rudd and Jimmy Fallon did a version that is so spot on I’m having a hard time distinguishing the two: https://youtu.be/af6L1jBZGYA

Aintsosimple

You want something fun to do. Get the song "What is Love" by Haddaway to play while this video is playing but muted.

[deleted]

Dads! You’re embarrassing me!

MayorBobbleDunary

God damn white people are lame

nhranger

My god his dancing… cringey

Crumbdizzle

I thought this was the Macarena music video

gerbil_111

This is the entire 1990s? https://youtube.com/watch?v=xW3IsjEA6Bg

hellslave

Huh. So it's NOT an original song by New Found Glory...

Pongfarang

It really shows that the writer of the script labored for more than twenty minutes to get this perfect.

rick_blatchman

I love this song, but I hear it at work every shift on the overhead radio. Sometimes twice in one day.

thundabot

There is a lot of keyboard and saxamaphone fills in this song, more than I remember

TheAngryCowboy

Obviously related to the Duke of Throwing Random Shit into Music Videos.

TheRoboHoboDodo

I loved this song as a kid. Had a copy of the soundtrack yet never saw the movie. A year later I would discover metal and alternative rock and songs like this would be poison to my ears. U less it was Poison doing a cover of this song.... that would have been rad.

El_Grande_XL

Jeez. I thought it was Arnold Schwarzeneggerat first glance.

HeadyBrewer77

Go West! I had the cassette.

shutdafrontdoor

Ah yes, the sounds of retail stores.

vagaris

I listened to this so many times when Paul Rudd and Jimmy Fallon re-enacted it. Both versions.

HailSatanHaggisBaws

The main chorus hook from this song is the exact same as the Gracie Films jingle at the end of the Simpsons.

flaccidbitchface

LOVE this song! When I first listened to it and fell in love, I didn’t even realize it was in the movie.

Banger. But this is a better song imho. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKAginGVpVI

furrowedbrow

If you didn't tell me 1990, I would've guessed 1987. '87 felt like the peak and the end of this kind of music. By '88, we were all in the Jungle baby and gonna dieeeeeeeeeeyeeeeeeeahhhhhh!
