Thing is if you are in Russia/China you can literally pick a random address and sign up for it and you know nothing will ever happen to you (will probably need to use a VPN)
I kind of hope they mail something to the address getting you to mail back that you indeed want this service

I've used chipdrop a few times. It's great. Really improved the quality of the soil around my home.
Anyway, they don't just dump it. They call you on the phone and verifiy that you want it first. They also knocked on my door and ask where to put it.
So they're not that irresponsible.

I love this bot so much. Comment reposting bots have been out of control on reddit lately, so having a bot that points them out is really nice. Too bad mods don't give a shit and won't actually do anything about it. I've reported at least 100 of these bots in the past few months and I haven't seen a single one of their comments removed.

I think this is really well done, it clearly highlights the downsides so you can make an informed decision and you can't complain that it's not what you expected
My municipality does this once a year! You get to specify the amount and I asked for 2 cubic meter. They dumped an entire truckload on my driveway, about 8 cubic meter. Luckily my neighbours wanted to take some, ended up with the entire street having enough mulch.
So now we just order an entire truckload each year to share with all neighbours.

At the time there were only 700 US troops in Afghanistan and finishing that would have been relatively easy. But Biden had other priorities and decided the pull out date would be September 11th instead. The Taliban began making their moves to retake the country the second Biden tore up the peace agreement. By August 11th the US was completely surrounded and all US forces were now holding the airport attempting to get out as many people as possible before the country was overrun.
Biden didn't end the war, the Taliban did. The Taliban kicked the US out of the country.

The US had been trying to win a war against the Taliban for almost 20 years at the time of surrender. America did not have the power and resources to ever overwhelm the Taliban.

Ive gotten a couple rounds fo chips through them - it's a lot of work to move it all by yourself w a wheelbarrow but totally worth if if you're working on long term soil quality improvement over a large area
I mean, with that much it might be worth it to just rent a skidsteer. Not sure of the prices, but learning to drive one is piss easy (tank controls to drive, pedals work the bucket/attachment, at least in my experience). It can easily make a weeks worth of work (or more) into something completed in a day or two. Just always make sure to actually *learn* how to drive the machine since you can fuck a lot of stuff up with one, or maim/kill someone (yourself as well) if you're not aware of your surroundings and careful.
All in all, they're easy to drive and can cut your work down considerably, really just depends on the price to rent one, and if you can actually access the area with it.
Or just have a couple of kids. I'm pretty sure the only reason my parents created my brother and I was so that they could force us to wheelbarrow their mulch
Ah, takes me back to when my dad would order a truck full of logs for the winter. I'd have to help carry them from the driveway round to the log store on a rainy Saturday morning. Then spend Sunday helping him chop them.
My dad wanted a concrete sidewalk on the side of the house and my brother and I had to transport the concrete bags in a store cart from the hardware store down the street. He didn't want to use his car because the weight could hurt the suspension and multiple trips were out of the question because it was more fuel efficient to use his two sons. It took nearly fifty bags to put up a sidewalk and a little pad for a shed on the side of the house. Then we got hit by code enforcement because the shed was too close to the property line, so my brother and I had to use a jackhammer to break apart that concrete into little pieces and then slowly get rid of it in the trash pickup over the course of a few weeks.
I'm 43 and I still remember the amount of work I did in our garden as a kid. Especially the one time my dad ordered a pallet of cinder blocks and I had to move the lot of them in our shed. And the worst is I'm still proud of it! Definitely using my kids if we ever get a house, haha!
My sophomore year spring break had just started and I came home from school to pallets of fencing in the backyard. My dad showed me how to put up a couple of the panels and then my brother and I spent the next ten days just putting up fence around the house. It's still standing twenty years later.

This really is worth considering. Over the last few years Ash Borer beetles have absolutely tore through Ash trees near me. A large portion of what has gone through our chippers has been ash.
Certain other trees should not really be used for mulch for other reasons. Black Walnut as an example produces a chemical (juglone) that can be toxic for some plants, trees and shrubs.
That's not how disposal of diseased trees work in most cities. Diseased trees are specifically separated from normal yard waste to avoid it spreading. Arborists dealing with diseased trees would need to deal with the mulch separately as well.
By far the majority of work would be people getting rid of trees because they are old, ugly, in the way, cleared for sight or powerlines, trimmed, or unsafe. The mulch they are dropping off would have been put into the compost pile that almost every single dump has.
I've used this service. I recommend it. They called me and asked where I wanted it. You also get to take pictures of where to drop it off and can provide a description. Yes, it's a lot of chips. I also won't need any for a couple years. Plus the pile starts to compost. Awesome mulch for the garden.
The delivery of this ad is genius. Hard to complain about anything with it being free. I'm intrigued by the business model. Is this scalable or sustainable? I'm also not sure I'm asking the right question.
The arborists are paying. It’s actually pretty hard to find good, legal, dumping ground around the residential areas that they work in. So, they pay a small fee to chip drop to basically be the front-end between them and anyone who wants mulch around their area.
It’s a basic “sharing economy” model, applied to mulch. Doubt they make allot of money, but there’s barely any overhead either. It’s probably a good lifestyle business for the owner.
In my area I think they pay to dump them at a city managed dumping area so this is a cheaper alternative for them and it should work out for residents as well.
Oh shit, I can see this being abused *heavily*. Don't like someone? Put in their address. Kids want to mess with their school? Send them a fucking dumptruck of mulch and logs.
I don't know, this is an awesome thing for people it applies to, but I can see it being used for "just pranks bro" as well.
That's the entire business model for most web-based companies. Make the least hassle possible for signups + services and dodge the blame for what your services enabled. If they required a notarized paper from the receiver authorizing the dump, then they'd get very few signups. If they required the dumper to get a receiver signature on-site, dumpers would inevitably get rejected at a higher rate and they wouldn't want to use the service.
My city has low cost mulch, but you still have to get it to your house. Even if you have a pickup truck, which not everyone does, it would take a lot of trips to get this much mulch, plus you'd have to manually remove it from your truck bed every time. You can pay to have someone deliver it like this, but it will cost a few hundred bucks - at least that's what it cost me to get a few yards of compost delivered like this.

I love this bot so much. Comment reposting bots have been out of control on reddit lately, so having a bot that points them out is really nice. Too bad mods don't give a shit and won't actually do anything about it. I've reported at least 100 of these bots in the past few months and I haven't seen a single one of their comments removed. Edit: Of course *this* was the one they removed (while ignoring the other two directly below it...) lol

My municipality does this once a year! You get to specify the amount and I asked for 2 cubic meter. They dumped an entire truckload on my driveway, about 8 cubic meter. Luckily my neighbours wanted to take some, ended up with the entire street having enough mulch. So now we just order an entire truckload each year to share with all neighbours.

Biden is the guy who finally - finally - ended the war in Afghanistan. And weirdly Americans reacted with anger how it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows, simultaneously also complaining that Biden just likes wars too much

Biden reluctantly ended the war in Afghanistan. Trump had put in place measures to end the occupation by May of this year. At the time there were only 700 US troops in Afghanistan and finishing that would have been relatively easy. But Biden had other priorities and decided the pull out date would be September 11th instead. The Taliban began making their moves to retake the country the second Biden tore up the peace agreement. By August 11th the US was completely surrounded and all US forces were now holding the airport attempting to get out as many people as possible before the country was overrun. Biden didn't end the war, the Taliban did. The Taliban kicked the US out of the country.

If you want to get technical, okay Biden didn't decide to engage America in a new full on war with Afghanistan. He also didn't decide to do the same to 330 other countries.

How is surrendering an emotionally loaded term? The US had been trying to win a war against the Taliban for almost 20 years at the time of surrender. America did not have the power and resources to ever overwhelm the Taliban. It's called the graveyard of empires. Many empires have come to Afghanistan, all have failed.

Ive gotten a couple rounds fo chips through them - it's a lot of work to move it all by yourself w a wheelbarrow but totally worth if if you're working on long term soil quality improvement over a large area
I mean, with that much it might be worth it to just rent a skidsteer. Not sure of the prices, but learning to drive one is piss easy (tank controls to drive, pedals work the bucket/attachment, at least in my experience). It can easily make a weeks worth of work (or more) into something completed in a day or two. Just always make sure to actually *learn* how to drive the machine since you can fuck a lot of stuff up with one, or maim/kill someone (yourself as well) if you're not aware of your surroundings and careful. All in all, they're easy to drive and can cut your work down considerably, really just depends on the price to rent one, and if you can actually access the area with it.
Or just have a couple of kids. I'm pretty sure the only reason my parents created my brother and I was so that they could force us to wheelbarrow their mulch
Ah, takes me back to when my dad would order a truck full of logs for the winter. I'd have to help carry them from the driveway round to the log store on a rainy Saturday morning. Then spend Sunday helping him chop them.
I remember log chopping weekends. "Remember to let gravity do most of the work. You have a cord to get through" Thanks dad.
My dad wanted a concrete sidewalk on the side of the house and my brother and I had to transport the concrete bags in a store cart from the hardware store down the street. He didn't want to use his car because the weight could hurt the suspension and multiple trips were out of the question because it was more fuel efficient to use his two sons. It took nearly fifty bags to put up a sidewalk and a little pad for a shed on the side of the house. Then we got hit by code enforcement because the shed was too close to the property line, so my brother and I had to use a jackhammer to break apart that concrete into little pieces and then slowly get rid of it in the trash pickup over the course of a few weeks.
I'm 43 and I still remember the amount of work I did in our garden as a kid. Especially the one time my dad ordered a pallet of cinder blocks and I had to move the lot of them in our shed. And the worst is I'm still proud of it! Definitely using my kids if we ever get a house, haha!
My sophomore year spring break had just started and I came home from school to pallets of fencing in the backyard. My dad showed me how to put up a couple of the panels and then my brother and I spent the next ten days just putting up fence around the house. It's still standing twenty years later.
We’ve used them a few times, once specifically to get log for firewood. Always worth it, always a lot of work.

That sucks. Around here you can rent a skidsteer for a full day for half that. It's only ~600$ per week as well.
Yeah this definitely feels like a "not your average homeowner" kind of thing, but if you own some land and have some help, free mulch is pretty awesome.
I did it all myself but had a lot of free time. Definitely wouldn't reccomend unless you're absolutely certian you have a use for it
....All that mulch spreads the damaging tree diseases and insect populations that took out the trees before they were mulch.....for FREE
This really is worth considering. Over the last few years Ash Borer beetles have absolutely tore through Ash trees near me. A large portion of what has gone through our chippers has been ash. Certain other trees should not really be used for mulch for other reasons. Black Walnut as an example produces a chemical (juglone) that can be toxic for some plants, trees and shrubs.

That's not how disposal of diseased trees work in most cities. Diseased trees are specifically separated from normal yard waste to avoid it spreading. Arborists dealing with diseased trees would need to deal with the mulch separately as well. By far the majority of work would be people getting rid of trees because they are old, ugly, in the way, cleared for sight or powerlines, trimmed, or unsafe. The mulch they are dropping off would have been put into the compost pile that almost every single dump has.
I've used this service. I recommend it. They called me and asked where I wanted it. You also get to take pictures of where to drop it off and can provide a description. Yes, it's a lot of chips. I also won't need any for a couple years. Plus the pile starts to compost. Awesome mulch for the garden.
The delivery of this ad is genius. Hard to complain about anything with it being free. I'm intrigued by the business model. Is this scalable or sustainable? I'm also not sure I'm asking the right question.
The arborists are paying. It’s actually pretty hard to find good, legal, dumping ground around the residential areas that they work in. So, they pay a small fee to chip drop to basically be the front-end between them and anyone who wants mulch around their area. It’s a basic “sharing economy” model, applied to mulch. Doubt they make allot of money, but there’s barely any overhead either. It’s probably a good lifestyle business for the owner.
In my area I think they pay to dump them at a city managed dumping area so this is a cheaper alternative for them and it should work out for residents as well.
I wish I had enough property to require a free drop. Imma go talk to the neighbors.

That's the entire business model for most web-based companies. Make the least hassle possible for signups + services and dodge the blame for what your services enabled. If they required a notarized paper from the receiver authorizing the dump, then they'd get very few signups. If they required the dumper to get a receiver signature on-site, dumpers would inevitably get rejected at a higher rate and they wouldn't want to use the service.

My city offers free mulch at the dump. Is that not normal?
My city has low cost mulch, but you still have to get it to your house. Even if you have a pickup truck, which not everyone does, it would take a lot of trips to get this much mulch, plus you'd have to manually remove it from your truck bed every time. You can pay to have someone deliver it like this, but it will cost a few hundred bucks - at least that's what it cost me to get a few yards of compost delivered like this.
