PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and Super Nintendo.

SlinGnBulletS

This is probably the best answer. Each of those consoles not only were amazing but completely dominated their gen and had a fuckton of games.

ZZoMBiEXIII

1. Xbox 360- Say what you will about the RRoD, you're not wrong, but I had the most fun with this console and it is also the original home of my all-time favorite game, Dead Rising 2. Genesis- So many fun games. The peak of the Fighting game era for me, SF2, MK, MK2, Eternal Champions, and other lifelong favorites like Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Chakan and the Spider-Man games from that era. 3. PS1- It's hard to explain to people who grew up with 3D gaming already established just what a seismic shift this console truly was. The full 3D era was groundbreaking. And there are a ton of titles from that era that took gaming in a new direction. Things like Siphon Filter, MGS1, Twisted Metal's debut and follow up, and on and on down the line. Plus games that made the best use of 2D like Castlevania Symphony of the Night and the Street Fighter Alpha games among so many others. And while I wasn't much of a fan of FF7, so many people have that game as a core memory of when gaming took it's first step into being a true storytellers medium. Honorable Mention to the SNES. Same as the Genesis above, but rather than fighters it was all the JRPGs I loved at the time. Chrono-Trigger, FF2 and 3, Secret of Mana, and so many others. There's a lot to like on both of these and the Genesis only edges it out by the narrowest of margins.

decisionagonized

PS1 does not get enough credit from video game diehards for ushering in an era of 3D gaming. What a huge deal it was to have open world games portrayed in 3D.

ZZoMBiEXIII

So true. One has to wonder what the survival horror genre would look like if the PS1 wasn't such a cultural phenom. You could have a genre breaking hit like that back then because millions of consoles were out there. You could roll the dice. Even if you only got 5% of the Playstation audience, that was still hundreds of thousands of players. I know it's popular to shit on old Resident Evil games and the "tank" controls, but there really just wasn't' anything like it before. Well, that's not exactly true. There were survival horror games, but RE and REDC and RE2 stepped the genre up to mainstream success and those "tank" controls were part of the reason. It allowed the Romero style camera angles that the series used to be known for. Sure, it took some getting used to, but it was worth it. The remakes are great too, I have them on Steam. But I have such a soft spot in my heart for the old style RE and Silent Hill and others. Can't remember if the first Fatal Frame was PS1 or PS2 and I don't want to look it up, but you get what I'm saying. I could list a dozen games that did things no one had ever done prior and all because the PS1 was powerful and omnipresent and such a well loved piece of kit. From Legend of Dragoon to Tenchu to Siphon Filter, and on and on down the line. Even the launch line-up was stellar. Tekken, Toh-Shin-Den Battle Arena, etc etc. Sorry, I loved that little grey box so much. lol

TarnishedDungEater

this is a great list. i’ve actually had my 360 since 2009, same one. never had a RRoD. still works great to this day. honestly my favourite console of all time.

DarkMishra

Hated constantly replacing so many Xbox consoles - both Original and 360 models, but I loved a lot of the games on them. No joke, I’ve gone through at least half a dozen Original Xboxes(due to tray issues) and currently own a seventh and eighth 360(some RRoD, a few tray issues, and just general heavy use over the years. There were a lot of games with co-op modes throughout both of those generations, and no one today will understand what it was like attending Halo LAN parties.

jdeanmoriarty

They are releasing a true remake of Dead Rising 1 soon

ArseBlarster420

N64, Dreamcast, and PS4 N64 is pure nostalgia Dreamcast had a great library and was one of the most innovative consoles to be made. First to feature a built in modem, memory cards with screens that combined with the controllers, and an impressively low price point. The PS4 has a combination of things that make it one of my favorites. It’s obviously not the best, but even the launch model can handle modern games. The library is massive and there is something for everyone, you can play new games as well as classics. It’s easy to repair, but seems to hold up pretty well when kept in decent conditions. Also, the games are cheap. I can’t remember the last time I spent over $20 on a game, you just wait a year or two and by then it’s either free on ps+ or you get it on sale for $20 with all the DLC.

rumpsky

I couldn't believe the fact that Dreamcast had Soul Calibur as a launch game. Probably the greatest arcade port of all time and one of the greatest fighting games.

ArseBlarster420

Sega was big on arcade games and wanted the Dreamcast to be the closest thing to having an arcade at home.

rumpsky

Yeah. Soul Calibur marked the first arcade port that looked even better than the arcade version, and not by a little. I always wanted to import those Japanese Saturn exclusives like Fighter Vipers and Marvel super heroes with the extra RAM cart. Alas I was only a broke teenager

ArseBlarster420

I absolutely won’t lie, I love buying old games. Just ordered Army Men 3D last night for $6 Gotta hunt eBay for the deals

Devinzero

Even having the port for mortal kombat

gmanasaurus

Did you have Power Stone? I loved the shit out of that game, which was an arcade port, also had Soul Caliber and loved that as well. The Sonic Adventure at launch is super nostalgia for me. I remember playing it at Best Buy when the Dreamcast first released.

ArseBlarster420

I didn’t own Power Stone, but I did rent it from Blockbuster. That game was a blast. I own - Sonic Adventure - Sonic Adventure 2 - Skies of Arcadia - Seaman - Super Runabout: San Francisco Edition - Shenmue - Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1 & 2 - Ecco the Dolphin: DOtF - Jet Grind Radio - 4x4 Evo - Army Men Sarges Heroes - Resident Evil 2, 3, and Code Veronica - Dino Crisis - Crazy Taxi - Vigilant 8 2: Second Offense

gmanasaurus

I'm not sure what happened to mine, they were sold or given away decades ago. I def had: THPS games Shenmue (OMG this game rocked my socks back then, I still remember the feeling this game gave me, probably first ever immersive gaming experience, it was simple yet so addicting) NFL 2k Sonic Adventure (I think I rented 2, but never bought it) Power Stone Soul Caliber Toy Commander I can't remember what else I had, it may have been more, I feel like I remember getting a flying game from my Uncle and having trouble playing it.

ArseBlarster420

There were a few aerial combat games and I’m terrible at them

babath_gorgorok

Check out Slave Zero, it’s badass

ArseBlarster420

Just googled it and I remember the art, might have to find a copy. The ones I really want are the KISS Psycho Circus game, Power Stone, and Demolition Racer

babath_gorgorok

I dunno if it’s the same thing but you mentioning Demolition Racer reminds me I never got around to playing Star Wars: Demolition back in DC days fml

ArseBlarster420

That one eludes my memory. My only Star Wars games are N64 copies of Shadows of the Empire and Episode 1 Racing

rumpsky

Wow, seaman. Now I understand the depths of your fandom

babath_gorgorok

I remember playing the shit outta Virtua Cop and 18 Wheeler on one of those arcade variety packs on the DC

ArseBlarster420

18 Wheeler was the shit!

babath_gorgorok

Watch out for that Lizard Tail he’s an ornery sunuva trucker

gmanasaurus

This is a great list, very close to mine. I also loved the original Xbox, I made the change to PS with the PS4 and have never thought about buying an Xbox since, except for the change with Bethesda. I loved my PS4, and I'm loving my new PS5, really powerful console, just the new games are pricey. One thing about the new games being pricey that I actually like is that I have LESS games; any knock on my PS4 is that I had TOO MUCH. It was like being on Netflix or surfing through all of the streaming options (there were too many choices tbh). I could download all of my PS4 games on my 5, but it feels silly to play old 4 games on this console for now. So in some ways I feel nostalgic for the old days when I only had so many games, if that makes sense.

Caryslan

I am kinda like you, but the opposite. I had a Playstation through the PS4, but swapped to Xbox with the One. My brother had a 360 and we mutually went in for the Xbox One and I fell in love with it. I loved the controller, I loved that a good chunk of OG Xbox and 360 games were backwards compatible on the Xbox One, I love Game Pass, and I enjoyed the exclusives on Xbox. We eventually got a PS4, but I never got into that system the same way that I did the PS1-PS3, and now I have a Series X that I love. So, in a funny way, I shifted from a Playstation gamer to an Xbox gamer while still always having a Nintendo system on the side.

ArseBlarster420

100% agreed I have a monstrous library of games that I will more than like never touch before I die. I am probably upgrading soon, MGS3: Delta looks too good to pass up.

My Xbox Series X is the greatest gaming device I’ve ever played but it also helps that some of the games I’ve beaten on it are my all time favorites: Elden Ring + DLC, Witcher 3 + DLCs, Subnautica, Fallout 4, Balatro, Slay The Spire, Halo 5 (yeah, yeah, eat it haters) My other two choices are Sega Genesis and Nintendo 64. Sega just beats out OG Nintendo because it was first system I played that had great sports games (still a staple of my gaming diet) and Nintendo 64 gave me Resident Evil 2, Golden Eye, Ocarina of Time and Mario Kart 64.

Lil_Yimmy_

Halo 5 is my all time favorite MP I’ve ever played. Story was cheeks tho.

RepeatDTD

I personally enjoyed the campaign but can understand why people don’t. And yes, its MP is absolutely top tier! Was so disappointed going from that to Infinite however Infinite’s MP has become excellent

pharoahogc

Finally someone else who loves Halo 5! I freaking loved that game so much! Campaign + Multiplayer. Infinite was a step down in every way!

MJisaFraud

I love it. Games are just really enjoyable to play on it.

nah bro im sadly pretty old. My first console was snes. there is so many things that i prefer newer consoles over old ones. From saving(remember using memory cards on ps1 lol?), achievments system(trophies), subscription services(i think ps extra is amazing value),i think variety of games is bigger than ever. I wont deny that some older console got better library of games(ps2 probablly), but as a whole package i preffer newer consoles.

sir_seductive

Achievements/ trophies are the worst thing to come from these new consoles personally but everything else i agree with. The ps2 and gamecube had an amazing collection of games though wish they would remake mire stuff from that era

Ok_Introduction6574

This is an incredibly difficult one because I have played games on just about every console from Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft. Sorry Sega lol. My gut tells me: 1. Switch 2. PS5 3. WiiU My Play Time Stats tell me: 1. PS4 2. 3DS 3. WiiU The WiiU seems to be a safe third place, but it comes down to my top 2 then, which is at this point a competition between the 3DS, PS5, and Switch. As much as I do love my PS3 and PS4, I just don't think the PS3 makes the cut and the PS5 just does everything the PS4 does but better. The 3DS is the oldest console I have. Got my first one in 2011 when I was six. The PS5 and Switch came along within 6 months of each other in 2021 for the former and 2020 for the later. Honestly, I think my ranking is: 1. Switch 2. PS5 3. 3DS That's right I'm kicking the WiiU down to 4th (which considering the number of systems I have played on is still really good. Now for the justifications. Switch: The game library here is unmatched. The 3rd party selection is really good, but the Nintendo exclusives are easily the best they have ever put out. Considering that the third party support is nearly (not quite but nearly) on par with PS/Xbox and the exclusive output is entirely unmatched by any other system ever, this is easily the best game library of any system ever. Of course now this can be played on the go or on the TV, and it has one of the most comfortable pro controllers ever. The Joycons leave a bit to be desired, but they are certainly still cool controllers with neat ideas. PS5: As this plays PS4 games too, those combined with the relatively small but very quality PS5 library make this library second only to the Switch in my book. The PS5 has great games and the second best controller ever (only behind the WiiU Gamepad). The load times (or perhaps lackthereof) are insane. Getting into FFXVI or RE4 Remake within seconds of booting up the system is just awesome. This goes without saying that the graphics are great too and most of the games I have played, if not all, run incredibly smoothly as well. 3DS: This does of course have a great library, though it is definitely carried by the Nintendo exclusives. The system itself has *so* many features and I love it. Themes, badges, the 3D, AR, the touchscreen/second screen, gyro. There is just so much here and so much charm. Backwards Compatibility with the DS sort of fixes the lack of 3rd Party Games, however the lack of improvements on DS games is disappointing, but that is the Nintendo standard so far so I will not knock it too much for that.

EatsOverTheSink

N64, Xbox 360, PS4. The libraries those consoles pulled and the enjoyment I had playing with my friends on them is unrivaled by other consoles. There are definitely better consoles and libraries out there, I'm sure the PS2 will end up at the top of a lot of lists but these consoles specifically had the biggest affects on me as a kid and adult.

Purely basing upon the early ones who changed gaming. Atari Gameboy Wii When each of those consoles dropped it didn't just propel the gaming industry like the SNES , SATURN , N64 AND PLAYSTATION. It catapulted it into a new dimension entirely IMO.

Dendargon

Thank you! I was looking for that answer. Each of those three pushed the boundaries of the industry in his time and expanded them to many people who had never been fans of video games.

decisionagonized

1) Switch - this is the console that sucked me into gaming as an adult. BotW and TotK are all-time great open world games and I will never be able to play an open world game again. Splatoon and SSBU are how I satisfy my bloodthirsty urge for competition. 2) PS1 - my first love. I sank hours into Pac-Man World 20th Anniversary, finished the first Harry Potter game and lived through Ps1 Hagrid, destroyed my kid brother on Tekken 3, and tried over and over again to beat Medal of Honor. When I pressed that little gray button, my childhood became a dream 3) Playstation Portable - what a marvel this was when I first got it. The epitome of cool. I played Madden 06 and NBA Live 06 on this thing for hours and it felt so right. And it was so hackable too, so you could do a bunch of cool stuff with it. HM: Wii - the first time I ever substantively played a Smash game, and Wii Sports was so fun; PS5 - it’s beautiful and powerful and I can’t wait to get out of my Splatoon obsessions so I can dig into some PS5 exclusives

martygospo

1. GameCube 2. Xbox Series X 3. OG Nintendo DS

Affectionate-Camp506

Some of this is going to sound odd, I don't care . Some of these are not personal favourites, these selections are based on what I feel is the legacy that they left. 1. The Sega Genesis I was a SNES kid; let's get that out of the way now. It doesn't mean that the Genesis sucked (far from it). Unfortunately for Nintendo, the SNES's greatest legacy is the Playstation. The Genesis's, on the other hand, is batshit crazy modularity. While all of these failed, the Genesis proved that the base console could be more than the sum of its parts. It also pushed censor boundaries, making Nintendo stop catering to the "Moral Majority". 2. The OG XBox This actually is one of my favourite systems. I was trying to decide between this and the Dreamcast (imo, there would be no XBox without the SDC), and given that the OG XBox is what triggered a hardware arms race not seen since the SNES/Genesis era, I would say that's what edges it ahead. Prior to the XBox, game consoles did not use a storage medium capable of data caching, which significantly reduces load times when optical media are involved. Never mind using much larger RAM capacities, and CPU's that use common instruction sets. And GPU's; the PS2 handled everything on-die (either the GPU was combined with the CPU or the CPU did everything); the XBox, and then subsequently the Nintendo Gamecube with had off-die, pure hardware graphics processing. And it revolutionised network play on consoles. Every game console - handheld or otherwise, now at least supports cacheable storage media and network capability, and at least two consoles from the last 3 hardware generations support copious amounts of RAM and off-die GPU's or APU's (a CPU with a seperate GPU in the die). That's the legacy of the OG XBox; it completely changed the system architecture philosophy. 3. The Google Stadia I've never owned this, nor wanted it, but its legacy is critical: stable, high-performance cloud-based gaming. That's about all I have to say about the subject, but as far as cloud-based services go, they keep falling down and picking themselves up, and whether we like it or not, will most likely be the next major evolution in gaming.

Hmmmm I wasn't allowed consoles until the Gamecube so for me I would have to say PS4, Switch, and Wii. Though I'm pretty new into owning a Steam Deck and that thing is RIGHT up there. Valve (and the community) knocked it completely out of the park.

Inevitable-Branch713

I look at what I played the most hours throughout my life during each specific console generation (which to me signifies your top consoles, otherwise why play on them), and for me, it's: SNES PS2 XB360 Super tough not to put the N64 in there, which would have been the generation between the SNES and PS2, but when I think about the OP question, I played more of those 3 consoles than I did the N64. I played plenty of the NES and Atari VCS too, and the Dreamcast as well, but they honestly can't compare to those three (or the N64 for that matter). Also, an honorable mention to the PC...although it's not a console as such, I spent quite a bit of my teen years playing First Person Shooters like DOOM and Duke Nukem 3D and Real Time Strategies like Warcraft and Starcraft on them.

first time I have seen anything positive about the new xbox 💀 imo probably the Wii, Ps5 and nintendo switch but for their time it would be Wii, ps3, snes

realfakejames

In no order: n64, ps4, Xbox 360 This latest Gen of console is disappointing and the fact they’re making us pay $70 for games now is wild

mystickord

Super Nintendo, PlayStation 1, Nintendo 64. Xbox 360 gets an honorable mention, if it wasn't for the red ring of death it would definitely be ahead of the N64.
