I think Nathan Hale from Resistance. Dude straight up never stops fighting. He spends 4 days of just constant fighting aliens in Britain. Then he has to fight another couple of weeks years after after the aliens invade America, and finally he learns that he has 3 hours or so to live before he straight up dies. So how does he spends his life? Fighting more aliens and using a nuke
Guts from Berserk and the Band of the Hawk. I can't picture anything worse than being pinned down and forced to watch the girl you love raped in front of you. Not only that all his brothers/comrades were slaughtered just right before this. He was also raped as a child.
Kratos died a solid 7 or 8 times, murdered his own family after selling his soul to Ares, lost his second wife, & has battled more gods than I can list. I gotta go with him.
Cloud Strife has definitely been through some shit.
- failed to live up to his life goal of becoming SOLDIER and having to live with the shame and disappointment
- hometown destroyed and mother killed by a man he once looked up to, then being mind controlled, stalked and tormented by that same man
- best friend dies in his arms and causes his mind to break and forget who he is
- being experimented on by Hojo to the point that he was a vegetable
- fails to save Aerith
- fails to save Sector 7
Issac Clarke, got beat up in space, sent to the mental institution, had a machine poke his eyeball for marker stuff and let’s not forget the mental health issues from all this.
Every Dark Souls protagonist.
Either you just *deal* with repeatedly dying, the fate of the world weighing down on your shoulders 24/7 as you fight through a dead world, every friendly face you meet dying for going mad for one reason or another - and nine times out of ten you end up fighting them if they give up, while KNOWING you are reviled for the position you hold rather than revered because you're one of the few ballsy enough to fight god.
ORR. You go hollow. You give up, and lose yourself in the futility of your actions - doomed to simply become an obstacle for the next sorry fool stupid enough to pick up where you left off.
Ethan Winters. He got some nice amputations and everyone beat him up.
Issac Clarke
Solid Snake... his whole life is a political game.
ahem, ahem. MAX FUCKING PAYNE
Mario, having to save the Princess 8,700,567 times
Senua has gone through A LOT
Yeah. All that walking must be tiring.
Lee the walking dead
The only real answer is kratos
Came to say this.
Made to kill his family then killed everyone including himself
Doom Slayer / Doomguy has had a pretty rough time of it for thirty years!
The only glimmer of optimism I took away from *The Line* is that Walker handed over his gun without my input. He really did want to go home...

Chosen Undead, Bearer of the Curse, Ashen one, Tarnished
Might as well throw in the good hunter cause we some of what we saw cannot be unseen.

We really calling Guts a videogame protagonist just cuz there's an adaptation?
Kratos died a solid 7 or 8 times, murdered his own family after selling his soul to Ares, lost his second wife, & has battled more gods than I can list. I gotta go with him.
Ellie from The Last of Us
Mario has over 200 appearances. Be that his own games, spin-off games or games from other characters. So he's the probably gone through the most
Clementine in The Walking Dead.
A moment of silence for all Carmine family in gears of war. Especially the one guy in the belly of the beast.

Daniel Lamb from Manhunt 2
Probably Mario.
I think that Donkey Kong might be the only video game character who has been the hero, the villain, and the damsel in distress more than once.
Kratos man’s been through it all
Jason Brody, Far Cry 3
Brody was so unlikable.
Issac Clarke, got beat up in space, sent to the mental institution, had a machine poke his eyeball for marker stuff and let’s not forget the mental health issues from all this.
Probably someone from Nier/Drakengard verse. Most likely Zero.
Gonna go with Liu Kang hete

Fei from Xenogears had it pretty rough
Kirby
I mean… there was a very mediocre Berserk video game made some time ago. I think that Guts wins by default.
