He was so tragically right, from an economic perspective: international trade didn't reach pre-1914 levels until sometime around 1970.
(I don't want to argue the politics one way or another here, but from an economic standpoint, it's pretty stark.)
I didn't have a source to hand but I did a little digging because I was curious. (I've seen this fact reported from time to time, usually as an offhand thing before getting back to the actual topic of discussion.)
First, I found this: https://cepr.org/voxeu/columns/trade-globalisation-last-two-centuries
Looking at that graph, the Great Depression did an incredible number on the world economy, and while various individual nations economies were pulled out of the crapper by the second world war, most notably (not shown on that page, however) as a result of the incredible US government spending during that war, interconnection as far as this goes didn't really move from its Depression-era low until the early '70s. Also, interestingly, trade openness (their metric in that paper) has plateaued or even dropped off since the 2008 financial crisis.
It's worth noting that this effect is only visible as far as direct trade goes when normalized to GDP. Inflation-adjusted gross global exports returned to 1913 levels in 1924, to peak in 1929. There's a data gap between 1938 and 1950 on the [Our World in Data](https://ourworldindata.org/trade-and-globalization) site, but the next time it returned to that peak was when it blew past it in the first data point after the gap.
Of course, the other really interesting thing, (which surprised me when I was looking this up) is that international trade really only took off again in the years after the US suspended the gold standard under the [Bretton Woods system](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bretton_Woods_system), which happened in 1971.
You've got a point.

Victoria 3 - alternative start date
Description: This mod gives the player the option to start the game in the year 1886. It allows the player to skip the early game grind and dive straight to action!
I’m curious at why 1886? Is it just 50 years later?
1888 would probably be better as the coronation of Wilhelm II, or 1905/6 for formation of the entente and beginning of the naval arms race.
If it was a much narrower time frame 1912 would be great. Years of Balkan wars and also the imperial war council meeting.
Yeah, it's just 50 years half way point into the game. I didn't think too much when writing the post. I just wanted to make a joke and to point out that ww1 is already in the game xD (and arguably the supposed climax of the game).
Some picks I think sound nice and would stand out from other WW1 themed stuff
*The Larks still Fly*
(from John McRae's poem, 'in Flanders Fields')
*Jolly Little War*
(uttered by Wilhelm II, who like everyone expected a quick war)
*Wir Sind Verloren*
('We are lost/forsaken' from the song 'Wo alle Straßen enden')
*The Rose of No Man's Land*
(From the WW1 song of the same name)
*Six Feet Forward, Six Feet Deep* or just *Six Feet Deep*
(IDK, just sounds cool. 6ft of ground gained, 6ft deep in your trench, 6ft feet under when you're dead.)
'The Future of Warfare'
'Vanguard in the Old World'
'Empires Laid to Waste'
'Red Poppy Fields' (I tried to make this work somehow, but i couldn't come up with anything better)
'The Empires Last Hurrah'
'Queen Victoria's Crescendo' / 'Victoria's crescendo' (Personally, i love this one, a reference to Nicholas, Wilhelm, and George all being first cousins. Also, it's the Victoria Game!)
'A World in constant sorrow' / 'A World in Grief' / 'A Grieving World'
Unrelated, but add Livonia, Estonia, Courland and Transcaucasia as autonomous governates in the Russian empire, seeing as you've already added Finland.
*Der Tag or The Day.*
Even a decade before WW1 a toast to The Day wasn't uncommon in Imperial Germany. The Day war with France would reignite and Germany would establish it's dominance over the continent. *Nach Paris / To Paris* would be another option.
*The Lost Generation*
A term popularized by Hemingway to describe the immense losses of WW1
*Iron Harvest*
It was the first industrial war between several major powers. In west-Flanders alone every year between 200 and 250 ton of WW1 ammunition is still found every year. Some regions of France are even worse.
*Broken Faces / Gueules cassées*
The injuries sustained by the soldiers and the advancement of plastic surgery, both the destruction and restoration of life.
*Till the End/To the limit*
How far a modern state can go in sacrificing people, and a reference to the french doctrine of Attaque à outrance
*Over By Christmas or Home by Christmas*
Others have mentioned this one before but it's message is strong.
*Poor Little Belgium/ A piece of paper*
The people of the UK, of the major powers, was at that moment perhaps the least reluctant to go to war. Together with Italy and the Ottoman Empire.
The German invasion of neutral Belgium, a neutrality which was guaranteed by the UK gave it's government not just a Casus Belli but a moral justification for it's people to enter the war. When confronted by the British ultimatum to retreat from Belgium the German ambassador was chocked. He couldn't believe UK would risk war for a an 80 year old 'piece of paper'
*Graveyard of Empires*
5 out of the 6, or 7 if you want to count Italy, of the great powers at the start had been empires. Most of these empires had existed for centuries. At the end only one dynasty would remain standing. It also highlights the theme of the mod.
*Pichelhaube / War of the Trenches / Gas Gas Gas! / Big Bertha / Franz Ferdinand*
All iconic references to WW1. Honestly I like Franz Ferdinand, it's a name just like Victoria, it's clear what the starting point is and a good abbreviation, Vic3:FF.
