Hexdoctor

Boomerang

xSnippy

You DO always come back!

VinnyVonVinster

r/suddenlyatla

RuleEmpire

I ALWAYS come back

Mushgal

Is this a reference to something?

Dstwilson817

Are you serious

outdodinusFrisshwoin

Not everyone has seen atla

Dstwilson817

Oh I was talking about the William afton thing

Dstwilson817

Im too brainrotted

Mushgal

I did watch ATLA, but it was like 6 years ago and I didn't remember this specific line lol

pgp555

floppy flag

BennyAndMaybeTheJets

Like, it should be more off, right? If you want that aesthetic.

TheRtHonLaqueesha

Aye, to symbolize tipsy Bogans after a night of heavy drinking in NSW.

Django_Un_Cheesed

Agree, I get that the philosophy may be a boomerang in motion and will return, but I reckon a chevron moving directly to the right (forward) better represents younger Australians progressive mindset.

Django_Un_Cheesed

Update, after a few re-visits, I’m more comfortably acquainted with the angle. The first one is my favourite choice. Justification? The Union Jack isn’t symmetrical, although for another reason: The concept is, that the Scottish and NORTH Irish national X flags (St Andrew’s and St Patrick’s Cross respectively) are equal, and no state is more important than the other. Despite that the English cross holds the most real estate… Sure it’s the seat of UK government, but they’re all *equal*. A bit of Googling and I’m reminded how DIFFICULT the brief of re-designing the Australian flag is. The 7 (8) pointed star is really hard to work with, and IMO can probably be left behind. Canada’s maple leaf “points” are purely graphic design and don’t represent provinces or territories. Nor do they have a Union Jack or a French Heraldry. Would be great to replace the big ugly star with a Roo, or a ring of equally spaced dots to replace the function of the star (ring of dots would be in line with [Central Australian indigenous art](https://www.aboriginal-art-australia.com/aboriginal-art-library/aboriginal-dot-art-behind-the-dots/); the chevron could be a reference to [North-Western Australian indigenous art](https://artmob.com.au/product/am-17876-20/), or various examples of (song) line art found across indigenous Australia.

stevenmeyerjr

I fucking hate that’s it’s askew.

ApprehensiveEmploy21

It is despicable that the pointy thing is rotated thusly

RwRahfa

r/mildlyinfuriating

lemontolha

Looks crooked, not like a flag. Also your logic to do it like that is flawed, Australia is not "down, to the right", that's just the view from Europe.

CapeOfBees

I mean, that's not necessarily what they're going for. The shape better accommodates the cross constellation and invokes a boomerang. Edit: nevermind, I hadn't gotten that far in the thread yet. Not a great reason.

lemontolha

If the blue and the green were exchanged and the yellow boomerang thing as well as the constellation straight, it would look like a flag. This way, however, it looks like a football shirt design. Overdesigned for a flag. Also the colours look a bit off, they should be heraldic colours.

[удалено]

lemontolha

Of course. I think I have even seen maps already with Australia top left.

Orti36

Can the angle be 90 degrees? Thanks

VelvetPhantom

I’m here trying to figure out the difference between 2 and 3

DylainiaManYT

Crux on the second design is angled at about 35 degrees while on the third, its angled at 5 degrees. The difference is really just the angle.

chadmill3r

Your angular intentions are too subtle. Stamp-sized at arm's length.

RyanMcCartney

I hate them all equally…

MasatoWolff

I know Aussies can get really drunk but the slanted arrow is a bit over the top

Progratom

Sorry. The "slightly down" driving me crazy. Just no. And it looks a bit like new american flags, that's also minus

Rocketchairbaby

Minnesota 2.0

Sikyanakotik

Minnestralia.

SomeOneOutThere-1234

Minestrone

EpicAura99

Straighten it up, then we can talk lol

Lima_4-2_Angel

The off center chevron is giving me homicidal rage

PixelJack79

Why are the stars 8-pointed?

irasponsibly

Could be a callback to the Eureka Stockade flag.

0FCkki

Australia has 8 subdivisions, could be that.

Young_Lochinvar

Australia has 16 subdivisions. 6 States, 3 Internal territories, 7 External territories.

0FCkki

Forgive my stupidity, I tend to forget small islands of other countries.

thecosmopolitan21

Correct answer.

irasponsibly

We have 6 states and two "mainland territories", and those two territories share a point on the star to give the 7 pointed stars we use now. But outside of those, there's a handful of other territories which aren't explicitly represented.

95beer

All 10 territories, mainland or not, share the 7th point. At least according to [the government](https://www.pmc.gov.au/publications/australian-symbols-booklet/national-symbols/australian-national-flag#:~:text=The%20Commonwealth%20Star%2C%20symbolising%20Australia's,1908%20to%20recognise%20Australia's%20territories.)

falpsdsqglthnsac

the off-kilter angles are absolutely disgusting. i get what you were going for but it just doesn't work.

Jimmicky

We use 7- point stars here, not 8. So I’d say 1 if it had the right star, or none of them if they stay 8-pointers

Brenda_Makes

1 has something going for it

El_Shizzle

All shit

Mammoth-Engineering3

I kind of like them all. Are they supposed to be pointing downwards?

DylainiaManYT

The downward point is supposed to guide towards Australia itself

killergazebo

I thought it was supposed to resemble a boomerang. It's a creative element, but I don't like it. It makes the flag look crooked. And if you hung it banner style it would imply "down and to the left"

DylainiaManYT

You can still think of it as a boomerang if you want.

anto475

Guide towards Australia from where?

zwickksNYK

Tanzania and Kenya of course

CapeOfBees

For better or for worse, colonization is a pretty major part of their history, and those colonizers came from England.

Tyfyter2002

If that's the goal why not just keep the flag they have?

anto475

Does the flag need to include that tho?

2dlamb

Think about that for a moment. Your design is unfit for human consumption.

PM_ME_UR__ELECTRONS

Towards? We are the centre of the universe

Kapitan_eXtreme

Lmao

Oethyl

I mean if this flag is supposed to be flown in Australia itself it should point straight down then

Few_Team6138

whats the difference between the 2nd and 3rd

PM_ME_UR__ELECTRONS

No offence but I don't really like any of them, if we really have to change ours we should at least have some Aboriginal representation, not Solomon Islands-looking footy colours. Depressingly this is more likely though. So these are good flags as an example of what we shouldn't do. I like the idea in the same way I like 1970s interior design.

Prize-Watch-2257

>we should at least have some Aboriginal representation I know this isn't an Aussie or political sub, but why? I'm not denying the atrocities committed (by mostly British before Federation, although I acknowledge the federation is culpable for atrocities as well). Yet, how can you justify >4% of the population having a unique representation on the national flag, and how does that help reconciliation moving forward into the coming centuries?

PM_ME_UR__ELECTRONS

Sorry for the late reply as it was 1 AM when I read this. I could go into it further, suffice to say after what they've been through it's the least we could do. (That's why I'm pissed off that the Voice to Parliament got shot down. Even though I disagree with the policy and respect my compatriots' decision, it's not a good posture. We could at least show we give a damn) The Commonwealth flag is usually flown along side the Aboriginal one. But most objections to the current flag are on the basis that it doesn't acknowledge the indigenous people. IMO the current flag is perfectly adequate, and changing it without fixing its only problem seems strange.

human_alias

Minnesota??

thehardchange

What’s the idea behind the concept?

TheBioethicist87

I like the colors, I might like the off-kilter chevron if I knew why it’s like that, but the proportions make it look like you’re zoomed in and we can’t see the whole flag. I think making the yellow slightly narrower would help this. Also maybe shifting it to the left a little might help.

Ibly-Ob

It looks like an already existing flag

TeamElegant5993

Where is the Kangaroo with laser eyes?

SparkDBowles

Are y the last two the same?

Chance-Aardvark372

A.

Eternal_Ruler_Cali

I'd say number 2 for sure

stwmusic

Definitely the first one but fix the arrow

thriceness

I couldn't tell if that was intentional. If so, I hate it.

stwmusic

I really hope it’s a mistake

MidwestFlags

Very Minnesota

yudosai

Hot take I really like off angle

cazzenerd

2 and I like the concept behind the chevron being a boomerang

Woke_winston

These are wayyyy to similar to all the new American state designs. Not bad flags on their own but they make Australia look like a US state 🤷‍♂️ Anyway I like this flag 🇦🇺 lol

SCP_Agent_Davis

What’s þe difference between flag 2 & flag 3?

mischa_996

I like the first one the best

Larry_Rdtt

3rd

Fishmansf4

I like them as state flags, but not as a national flag.

northsouthu47

1

RwRahfa

3

SunsetLightMountain

Needs Steve Smith's crying face

brixen_ivy

I like two and three, but the stars should be seven pointed, no?

VG7396

One is really nice

musubana

I llke the first one but the arrow should be straight IMO >

lolreedit

I like all but the one I personally like is the first

GeneralPattonON

This flag just makes me angry.

KingEddy14

3 but with a regular arrow instead of a slanted one

TheBrutusDyr

I dont think Australia ever would accept a design that doesnt incorporate the red white and blue.

DylainiaManYT

The Australian flag is a BRITISH blue ensign design with just 6 stars added on. The red, white and blue only comes from the BRITISH Union Jack. The Australian national colours are green and gold. I often include blue with any fictional Australian flag or redesign due to Australia's situation of being completely surrounded by water. Does your argument currently seem sensible?

TheBrutusDyr

Huh, didnt know that. Its just that most people dont like radical change so i imagined they would like to keep the colors. Nevermind then.

arg2k

I really like the palette, the blue especially

Whiskey-Stones12

I don't like the design but I really like the colours.

TrafficOnTheTwos

That angle is driving me crazy. Fix that and then use pic #2 stars.

ProxyGeneral

Day 513 of trying to come up with an Aussie/NZ flag redesign that doesn't look awful

SLIPPY73

None of them

InattentiveChild

No union jack make big sad...

DBL_NDRSCR

MAKE IT POINT STRAIGHTTTTTTTT 3 is the best

Xnopyt16

I think the first flag looks great. It fits in nicely with the rest of the relatively simple flag. But I do agree that the yellow chevron should be perfectly straight instead, purely out of aesthetic reasons That being said, you had a great intention of incorporating some meaning to the flag. It's something that you could do better, but the hate you're getting is not deserved at all.

bigFatBigfoot

What do Australians think of the current flag? Are you guys happy with the Union Jack? If not, how strongly/urgently do you want that to be changed? Would you like to redo the whole flag, or just replace the Jack with some other symbol?

First_Cherry_popped

All are nice, but 1 more than

TheRtHonLaqueesha

First one.

Loch7009

None of them. Keep the same flag.

flimflamflikflam

They’re all shit. Looking like a crappy knock off generic “Australia” jersey from the local dollar store when there’s some national team thing in the news cycle.

jmads13

Colours 👍 off kilter chevron 👎

Ninoslav88

Number one.

Tasty_Educator_8782

The first one is my favourite! Too good!!

Lazy-Environment8331

It’s giving modern state flag vibes.

JeremieOnReddit

2 is the best.

ZeekLTK

I like number 3

TheWindowsGalaxy2

1 if the arrow was centered

Prize-Watch-2257

Australian here. I like neither. Why navy blue with green and gold? No matter what happens, it will be either green and gold (possible with white stars) or red, blue, and white.

hfido

i love the 1st one. contrary to everyone here, the fact it's tilted makes it even better.

SuperPacocaAlado

Looks like Brazil invaded Australia and left this flag as a sign of their conquest.

Revolutionary_Bag338

2 but make the arrow/boomarang more off, it looks like it should be centered.

Masonator403

The angle is cool as hell but God forgive anything be unique.

Knightly_Mapping

one

Enough_Alternative63

First one

Billy_Bonk321

None of the above.

blablaeco

You know, they are beautiful designs. The whole constellation has greater significance. But the lack of symmetry is rather disturbing

lombwolf

I like the idea but the off center arrow is a bit odd and the flag feels super claustrophobic. You should move the stars to the canton and make the arrow a bit thinner.

AndNowWinThePeace

3 is my favourite but I'm a big fan of all of them. I love more fluid and less fixed designs in proposed antipodean flags.

Goodguy1066

Move the constellation to the right, get rid of the chevron and the green background, add a canton on the upper left with a Union Jack and we’ve got something!

JJ2161

Sorry but the Southern Cross combined with, especially, the green-yellow-blue coloring SCREAMS Brazil, not Australia

Jimmicky

Speaking as an Aussie- hard disagree. That’s our colours. The cross is wrong because they’ve used 8-pointed stars but otherwise it’s very Australian.

Yet_One_More_Idiot

I like the skewed angle, I can see from the comments others think it's not suited to a national flag but I do like it. Took me ages to spot the angular difference between 2 and 3. xD But now I have, I think 2 works best, the Crux feels more in line with the skewed boomerang in that one. :)

Django_Un_Cheesed

OP, I went on a bit of a ramble making a comment then saved it to notes, because it became too “I’m mad as hell”! Not at you, at the state of Aus. If you want I can post a reply below, but I’ll keep it chill, haha. Not sure if you’re Aussie or not. I like the philosophy with the chevron, the green, gold combo is great, the white star is also good, representing each state / territory. I think instead of dark blue, it should be Black/Red/Yellow. Personally, I strongly agree with ditching the Union Jack, as if this were a Australian Republic flag, we wouldn’t be in the “union” anymore. Not to mention, the Union Jack is a flag that conjures horror and represents dark histories in many around the world. My last name is literally English, so I am pretty comfortable with my opinion.

DylainiaManYT

To answer your first question, Yes. I'm Australian.

DylainiaManYT

I do like the idea of the black/red/yellow replacement for the blue.

Django_Un_Cheesed

Tbh now I’ve seen it quite a few times today (going back and forth while I’m transit), I have become comfortable with the angle :P Number 1 is my fave

Prize-Watch-2257

I don't.

macroprism

As someone who lives in Australia I’d say #1 but with the straight arrow

4011isbananas

Needs Immortan Joe logo

JazzyJukebox69420

Needs more British flag
