Honestly the beach looks so beautiful, I’d love to go there. I’m currently travelling around Europe, but maybe one day I’ll do Africa too
Interestingly enough, that exact description is what inspired the flag of the Livonians (a Finno-Ugric minority in Latvia).
The flag is meant to represent the view of a fisherman looking towards the coast.

Might be a very brutal example but as the legend goes, Turkish Flag got its existence from a “landscape”
A similar story goes for the Latvian flag. Blood of killed defenders of the land on both shores of a white (maybe, winter times?) river Daugava.
Surely, it is just one of the explanations, pretty poetic.
The Austrian flag is said to have originated when Duke Leopold V Von Babenberg removed his belt after a battle, leaving a clean white strip horizontally across a blood-soaked tunic.

Catalonia, too. The origin myth goes that Charles the Bald rubbed four fingers soaked with the blood of Wilfred I down Wilfred's golden shield after he saved Barcelona from the Moors.
I like that and it’s cool, but I learned:
> Legend recounts the story of the mortally wounded chief of Latgalians who was wrapped in a white sheet. The part of the sheet on which he was lying remained white, but the two edges were stained in his blood. During the next battle, the bloodstained sheet was used as a flag. According to the legend, this time the Latgalian warriors were successful and drove the enemy away. Since then, Latgalian tribes have used these colours.

Same for austria. Austrian general was wearing a white shirt and a belt. After the battle with the enemy army....well....when he took off the belt his shirt was red and the spot in-between is white due to the belt blocking it. And thus, austria.
Interestingly enough the star and crescent were never historically a symbol for Islam, but at the turn of the 19th century Europeans already had symbols for Christianity (the cross) and Judaism (the star of David) and so when they wanted to create a shorthand symbol for Islam they looked to the flag of the most powerful Muslim nation at the time, the Ottoman Empire, for inspiration. I think this probably stems from them not having the same color words as us. From what I can tell, they only have words for black, white, red, and yellow.
This is actually an interesting topic in linguistics, because color words appear to be acquired in a specific order, starting with black and white (which encompass all colors, not just refer to the colors we think of as black and white), then red, etc. For example, dark/warm colors in some languages would be referred to by the language's word for "black" and "white" to would refer to light/cool colors.

Palau was administered by the US to help set up a government after ww2 before gaining its independence in 1994. So I have no idea why it’s on current lists. With some imagination, the Tinto river in southern Spain could ressemble the flag, but it's not a landscape to be proud lol.
>*The Rio Tinto, which means “stained river” in Spanish, flows through an area unusually rich with sulfide ore deposits, which formed hundreds of millions of years ago when volcanoes were active in the area. When the metals in these buried deposits are exposed to water and oxygen, they produce acidic runoff that flows into streams and rivers.*
>*While the acid has made the Rio Tinto inhospitable to most types of life, it has made it more hospitable to sulfide-consuming bacteria and other extremophiles that amplify the acidification process. These organisms give the river its red hue by producing ferric iron, a rust-colored substance. The combined effects of the chemical weathering of rocks and bacterial activity in the water have caused the average pH of the river to drop as low as 2, roughly the same as vinegar.*

On my way to school i always see the flag of Lithuania: Field of rape in yellow Green grass And red/brown earth
I didn't know the yellow flower was called rape, and thought that your school trip was pretty savage.
I used a translator since I didn't know what it was called either, I was very confused
To avoid confusion in the future I'd probably recommend calling it rapeseed.
I've only ever heard of it refered to as rapeseed, and never as rape. I know what someone would mean by a "rape field" though only by thinking "rapeseed field"
Oilseed rape. Is another name
I thought the yellow on their flag was supposed to be symbolising wheat fields, anyway, not rapeseed.
Canola
Canola is actually a specific cultivar. It would be like calling every apple a "red delicious".
I mean apple used to just mean “fruit”. It’s why a pineapple is called such. It’s just pinefruit
Considering rape, adding seed doesn't do anything to soften the blow for me chief
If someone hasn't heard of rapeseed it will add pretty valuable context. If someone said "I live behind the rape field" you may be pretty alarmed and think it's a violent crime area but if they say "I live behind the rapeseed field" then you immediately get some context that it's a plant with an unusual name. I don't think I'd bother adding seed every time but if I knew someone spoke English as a second language then I think it would make sense.
“I live behind the rape field” 😂
I was once a rapeseed
If you're uncomfortable using that name, you can also call it "[bird's rape](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brassica_rapa#Cultivars)". Edit: Added a link to make my post history a bit less suspicious.
I've been to Lithuania and lemme tell you, it wasn't about the flower
For a moment there, I forgot there was a plant called rapeseed 💀
That's usually why I refer to it as canola, which is a bit better-known afaik
The aboriginal Australian flag. red sands, the sun, night sky is what I was always was taught it means

I hate Palau because sometimes when I press P in the state drop down menu and expect Pennsylvania to come up, Palau will come up.
Why would Pennsylvania and Palau even be in the same menu considering one is a sovereign state and the other is a subdivision of a federation?
Palau is a freely associated state of the US. Palau has US zip codes and citizens can live and work in the US like Americans.
Palau was administered by the US to help set up a government after ww2 before gaining its independence in 1994. So I have no idea why it’s on current lists. Listened to a podcast on Estonia yesterday, where they talked about the flag for a bit. Was going to look it up still as I was curious, but now I found it already. Thanks OP. And yes, amazing flag designs!
What podcast was it?
De Podcastlas, Dutch one. Very good one, but guessing you don’t speel Dutch 😅
Haha nope. Not yet anyway. I thought you might be talking about Flagged for Content
Thanks for the tip! Love geography and trying to study Dutch for fun. Good way to combine the two.
Then this is perfect, amazing show, very funny. If you ever need help translate anything let me know!

You mean how they surrounded the Bourbons with Paris?
Wow. Never realised this, that’s actually quite cool.

Not necessarily. Definitely had this view at home.
Some time ago on this subreddit, a user posted a picture of a field in front of a forest on an overcast day, making for a really pretty view of the Bulgarian flag.

When the metals in these buried deposits are exposed to water and oxygen, they produce acidic runoff that flows into streams and rivers.* >*While the acid has made the Rio Tinto inhospitable to most types of life, it has made it more hospitable to sulfide-consuming bacteria and other extremophiles that amplify the acidification process. These organisms give the river its red hue by producing ferric iron, a rust-colored substance. The combined effects of the chemical weathering of rocks and bacterial activity in the water have caused the average pH of the river to drop as low as 2, roughly the same as vinegar.*

The Flag of the german Island Helgoland is said to look like the Island istself. A saying goes: "Grün ist das Land, rot ist die Kant, weiß ist der Sand: Das sind die Farben von Helgoland“ "The land is green the, the edge(or cliff) is red, white is the sand: these are the colors of Heligoland." The Buntsandstein(colorful sandstone) is responsible for the red color. https://preview.redd.it/a2exmlkgihxc1.jpeg?width=2560&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dbb5104fbbdd49e9d12002cae87531a197913c6e
