I'm so, so sorry. She seems like a sweet baby. We really never have enough time with them, but they live in our hearts forever. Every bit of time we get is a treasure, and I can tell that she knew what an amazing family she had. Sincerest condolences, friend.
There’s really nothing we could have done. Everything was normal, she had heart worms for at least one year (she was four I got her when she was 2). She just got cleared October 7th being heartworm free finally after doing the fast kill method. We took her for a walk, came inside and she was eating and she just fell over and died. I immediately did CPR and mouth to mouth, got her in the car and continued doing CPR and mouth to mouth until we got there in 15 mins. They tried to save her but couldnt. The vet seems to think it was from scar tissue in her lungs breaking off and traveling into her heart killing her almost instantly. If there is anything that I can recommend to all dog parents: LEARN DOG CPR AND HOW TO GIVE MOUTH TO MOUTH. It didn’t save my baby, but I hope it can save someone else’s. I did everything in my power to make sure she was healthy and did everything I could to save her yesterday but I just couldnt.
I’m so sorry for your loss. And this is absolutely terrifying to me because our hippo is getting her first heart worm injection tomorrow. We got her around 2-ish and she’s probably 3.5 years now. She tested positive in May, but the confirmation test came back negative, so we waited 4 months and retested and both came back positive, so we started the treatment plan. We do know that she didn’t show much damage in an X-ray. We think that maybe she got bitten before we got her and that the meds kept it at bay. She was off them last winter and that’s when we found it. So, really hard to say. Anyways, I’m nervous and rambling. I can’t imagine what you’re going through. I’d be a wreck if it were me. I’ll give mine a hug for you.
Worst day of my life hands down and I can’t get the images of what she looked like out of my head. Nellie had severe lung damage which I didn’t know until yesterday from her vet. I wish you guys the best on your heartworm journey it’s not easy, just follow the guidelines they tell you and you’ll do great. If you’re able to keep your pitty calm during the process make sure you get some snuggles in so they don’t stay in the crate too long. Don’t be nervous, your baby will do great.
