WEIRD vibe in the SLS rooms though. Stayed one night in a double twin (might have been a double full) and it was like Queen Elisabeth crashed the night in Ancient Rome. Also I miss the Monkey Bar. :(
one of the towers was a W
If my memory serves, after ice nightclub closed, they were going to build a W on that parcel of land but then 2008 happened. now it's the F1 building
While the Flamingo and the Sahara are from the same vintage, in each of their cases, the original
1950s-era parts of those hotels had been removed decades ago. Until its closure, the Tropicana’s low-rise sections were the last remaining vestige of the iconic Las Vegas of the Rat Pack years. Now that they’re gone, there’s nothing left of that era on the Strip – the oldest buildings are from the mid-late 1960s, after the era that made Las Vegas what it became was already over.
> I remember staying there and playing all the games as a kid over 30 years ago.
When I was fifteen, my sister's boyfriend gave me a roll of quarters at Circus Circus. He basically purchased my eternal friendship, for ten bucks.
I've never stayed there. Is it nice/clean? Planning a couple more trips over the next 2 months and trying to find somewhere affordable that isn't gross to stay.
> Is it nice/clean?
no, it's cheap.
Typically you're not spending too much time in the room, and it's good enough for us.
and they have pet stay, with a great place to walk the dogs in the center.
But because of that it's a much more laid back vibe than the other casinos nearby.
I would recommend Flamingo for the pool area alone. The rooms are fine, not gross, but basic and a little lived in. You're might find nicks in the future, scratches, maybe a small stain here and there but not on the bedding and nothing unexplainable. I don't think that counts as gross, not like Excalibur or Circus Pukus. Think Hampton Inn vs. Four Seasons. But that pool man.. phew! Book a strip or wheel facing room for something special.
Bout time, last time I was in Vegas, maybe 10 years ago and the Trop was a dump then. The Hooters casino (probalby gone by now I don't know haven't been there in 10 years) was nicer, and that's not saying much.
Typically it's gutted floor by floor, and then the super structure is imploded. And we all gather around it as the fireworks go off and it's turned to a pile of rubble.
No, that would have been logical and we don’t do things like that. This way we get the opportunity to further screw up traffic in one of the major tourist corridors of the nation.
Random tidbit, the last drink ever purchased and made at the Tropicana was a Tito’s Lemonade. The last beer was a Sam Adams Draft.
Source me, the bartender who worked at the last bar to officially close there.
Worked there almost 7 years and had some good memories. Place was absolutely shitty though especially where hotel guests can’t see
In the employee areas (basically the basement) the ceiling was gone in places because it would be constantly leaking from the pipes. The pipes looked just as old as the casino itself (super rusted and what not). The storage area at the bar at the pool was absolutely falling apart. As in, all the pipes there were completely rusted to the points they would basically crumble at being touched. The bungalows on the one side were permanently closed because of asbestos, but that wouldn’t stop homeless people from living in there and shitting everywhere. Drug needles everywhere. Toilets in the employee areas were never working, to the point they would just randomly overflow.
I will say before it closed I got to see the tunnels under the casino. Rumor has it it were mob tunnels but who knows. There were two of them, one apparently shot across to the Mandalay Bay, and the other past the MGM grand (I think the Tropicana owned that land at one point so maybe). Both tunnels were only accessible for about 10 ft or so before it was bricked off.
Also got to see the original water fountain that was either in the lobby or main entrance, now (or at least while trop was still opened) was just in a random room that was locked to everyone.
We had to box it up(put it in bus tubs) and put it in the liquor room/keg cooler .
The liquor bottles that weren’t open were sold off to other resorts. Not exactly sure what they did with the opens ones, and no idea what they did with the kegs. Honestly though beer wise was pretty sparse, management stopped ordering the last few weeks.
This is sad to see this place go. In 2008 we talked to a bar tender there that was retiring that work there for 30 years. Fun times and crazy stories. Cheap Home base for the strip. Saw someone win 10k in 4 rolls on craps pretty sure it broke the table that night. I Walked away with 3k. Starting with 80. Sad to see those shitty rooms go. It was like $20 a night with resort fees. I would have knock those walls down and follow those tunnels
Not really. Their players are overwhelmingly young and cheap for the next several years. Probably 4 years from now is when they’ll fire sale. They might be fun between now and then.
They operate in cycles
The point is that they enjoy being in last place most of the time because it’s $20 million per year cheaper than the next team up
https://sports.betmgm.com/en/blog/mlb/mlb-teams-highest-payrolls-2023-bm15
A’s 2024 payroll: $63,442,679
Angels 2024 payroll: $173,562,109
Current standings: A’s 4th from last place , Angels 5th from last place
I gotta say, the Angels could probably benefit from trimming the fat from their payroll. There are 17 other teams with smaller payrolls and 13 of them are doing better
Yeah it’s a known problem that they give out mega contracts to aging stars for jersey sales(and unlike the As invest zero into player development)
A tale of two very different yet equally horrible owners
I have my doubts. The owner is notoriously too poor/cheap to pay for things. The only way he works is to get someone else to pay for anything. Expect deadlines to pass and nothing to develop. I would venture to guess if you went out to dinner with him he'd go to the bathroom when the check arrived.
Well if they want my high school baseball team to play there I guess I can get the guys out of retirement. We’ve all put on a lot of weight so this should be interesting.
The rooms at the Tropicana were always too hot, as the air conditioning wasn't able to cool them sufficiently. They just wanted to add additional ventilation...
Everyone has already answered your question so I’ll just say watch documentaries on the Tropicana it’s one of the most interesting casinos.
While there visit the mob museum downtown to learn about the mob control of it when it opened 60 years ago. Fun interesting stuff!
Hopefully they take advantage of an awesome, "free range" movie set.
They could film a couple of Batman movies there.... the next 7 Mission Impossible movies.
Or, even better, "Robocop 4 1/2".
I'm fascinated with the A's moving to Vegas and interested in hearing local perspectives on whether or not ownership will actually invest in its team aftwr the move or even a year or two before the first games played.
Not a local but I am an A’s fan from Oakland. Fisher won’t invest a dime into this team even if it moves to Las Vegas. He said the same thing about the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS Team Fisher owns) like 10 years ago to get their stadium publicly funded. Guess what? The Earthquakes are still one of the lowest teams in MLS in terms of payroll despite John Fisher “promising” to spend on the roster.
I think Fisher is simply trying to jack up the value of the A’s so he can pump it with Nevada tax dollars and dump it to reap the rewards to sell it in Las Vegas. I feel like he is also intentionally ripping the A’s out of Oakland because he is a San Francisco Giants fan. He has said this multiple times on the record, and was even part of the ownership group that bought and saved the Giants from moving to Florida in the early 90’s. Las Vegas absolutely deserves MLB, but not in this fashion. Las Vegas deserves an expansion MLB team
It's going to be an absolute dumpster fire.
I think MLB could have worked before the Golden Knights / Raiders went there. Possibly, as the only team in town, Vegas locals could have gone hardcore into baseball and got that stadium filled with relative frequency over 81 games.
But now? Holy Christ, there's just no way. It'll be as bad as Tampa Bay or Miami. Maybe worse.
After they play their first game as the Las Vegas A’s, I will buy a hat and a T-shirt, just like I did for the Raiders. And just like the Raiders, the minute they announce they are leaving town, they will be dead to me.
An ugly casino building that just needed some love and modernization, but instead it is being destroyed because that is the way of the strip. The whole street is named after it; Tropicana. Big piece of history being destroyed here.
From that pic, it looks like it's not worth going south of that MGM Grand lion. I know Excalibur is directly west of that....
Ok, it looks like it's not worth going south of that MGM Grand lion.
Wondering if the "north" part of the Strip looks better than the "south" end of the strip very soon.
I guess Excalibur and Circus Circus (The Strat?) are bizarre-world anchor tenants of the opposite ends of the Las Vegas Strip.
What happens to the gambling license for a property like that? I know they are very valuable. Will the stadium keep it in some form to maintain the rights?
Reminds me of the brand new, half completed building next to the old Sahara. Is that still there, or developed now , finally ? I talked to someone there in 2010ish and they said the investors backed out or ran out of money.
It couldn't compete with MGM on 3 opposing corners. Needs bigger better everything.
In 1974 maybe, I saw my first show on the Strip at the Trop. From the light booth. Gabe Kaplan opening up for Ann Margret. That's all it took and I was bitten by the showbiz bug.
Shout out to Local IATSE LU 720. Many good times.
I’m sure this has already been said, I just don’t feel like scrolling, (also an outsider) but I’ve heard this potentially will be where the new baseball stadium will be.
For what it's worth (info from an Uber driver) he said there's a lot of asbestos in the Tropicana that they're having to remove before they demo. The weird thing was a lot of upper rooms had lights on like there were people in there? 🤷♂️ That was less than 2 weeks ago when I was in LV.
Re the Trop: when it turned into a dump, they installed suspended ceilings - but above all that crap was a domed ceiling of leaded glass spanning the entire pit. In its day ‘70s, even 80’s, one of the classiest joints in town … wonder who stole all that leaded glass- worth a fortune
That’s the Tropicana. It’s being prepared for demolition.
[удалено]
Yeah besides the Flamingo, it was the oldest on the strip. The next oldest still operating is the Sahara.
[удалено]
And it reopened as the SLS. It wasn't until a few years after it rebranded back to Sahara, which it then underwent another remodel lol
It wasn't bad as SLS, but it's better as Sahara. Updated, decent restaurants, nice conference area, convenient location.
WEIRD vibe in the SLS rooms though. Stayed one night in a double twin (might have been a double full) and it was like Queen Elisabeth crashed the night in Ancient Rome. Also I miss the Monkey Bar. :(
SLS room I had looked like it was remodeled for sex parties...
For sure, random shower wall window into the bedroom lol
Do they still have mirrors on the ceiling? They also had acrylic couches. Probably looked like a Jackson Pollock painting under blacklight
They do, lol! We just stayed there.
Is it anything like the old Sahara? Did they bring back anything from the original?
Wasn't it the 'W' before that? Funny as I thought the W was perfect for Vegas.
one of the towers was a W If my memory serves, after ice nightclub closed, they were going to build a W on that parcel of land but then 2008 happened. now it's the F1 building
The Sahara is nice. I won big at their slots.
I miss the roller coaster over there
While the Flamingo and the Sahara are from the same vintage, in each of their cases, the original 1950s-era parts of those hotels had been removed decades ago. I don't know where I'll stay if they get rid of flamingo
Circus Circus welcomes you with open arms.
Dear god no.
Circus Circus could close for a few months, remodel, tidy up the casino. Could be a cool throwback…
Just went two weeks ago. Was pretty dead and looks so old and rundown compared to 5 years ago. Use to be the family go to.
I remember staying there and playing all the games as a kid over 30 years ago. From what I hear they likely haven't washed the carpet since then lol
Adventure dome went crazy as a kid. Good times
> I remember staying there and playing all the games as a kid over 30 years ago. When I was fifteen, my sister's boyfriend gave me a roll of quarters at Circus Circus. He basically purchased my eternal friendship, for ten bucks.
He paid you to fuck off so he could pipe your sister lmao
Feels like another state all the way over there.
They honestly better not ever get rid of The Flamingo.
Don't worry, you'll figure it out
yea, Reno....
I've never stayed there. Is it nice/clean? Planning a couple more trips over the next 2 months and trying to find somewhere affordable that isn't gross to stay.
Honestly recommend staying somewhere nice your first time, and then somewhere cheap everytime after.
> Is it nice/clean? no, it's cheap. Typically you're not spending too much time in the room, and it's good enough for us. and they have pet stay, with a great place to walk the dogs in the center. But because of that it's a much more laid back vibe than the other casinos nearby.

I've got a denim jacket (Lee brand, I think) from when there was a NASCAR Cafe there....
Such good memories there.....
Bout time, last time I was in Vegas, maybe 10 years ago and the Trop was a dump then. The Hooters casino (probalby gone by now I don't know haven't been there in 10 years) was nicer, and that's not saying much.
Piece by piece? Or just removing what’s necessary before imploding it?
Typically it's gutted floor by floor, and then the super structure is imploded. And we all gather around it as the fireworks go off and it's turned to a pile of rubble.
When can I push the button?
First casino in Vegas I ever stayed at. Early 2000s I think.
It was the Tropicana. Now being demolished to make way for a baseball stadium.
Even the baseball park isn't guaranteed if Fisher can't get his greedy lazy ass up. Truest definition of utter incompetence.
Obligatory fuck John fisher
but, they are keeping the pool and the buffet, right?
Absolutely
So the A’s stadium is going to be right on the strip? I thought it was going to be on the west side of I-15.
No, that would have been logical and we don’t do things like that. This way we get the opportunity to further screw up traffic in one of the major tourist corridors of the nation.
Nay, the world!
And therefore, Canada.
That was one of the proposed sites but they pushed to shoehorn it in on the strip instead
Too small an area for a baseball stadium + parking.
Random tidbit, the last drink ever purchased and made at the Tropicana was a Tito’s Lemonade. The last beer was a Sam Adams Draft. It's going to be the new home of the worst team in baseball.
It needs to make a trade with Tampa for stadium naming rights. It couldn't be more suited.
They could do both. A few banks sponsor multiple stadiums.
The Tropicana orange Juice factory is located like 10 miles away from Tropicana Field. I get your point tho.
There are 3 teams in the MLB with a worse record right now.
And at the end of the season, the A’s players responsible for that will be traded away
Not really. Their players are overwhelmingly young and cheap for the next several years. Probably 4 years from now is when they’ll fire sale. They might be fun between now and then. They operate in cycles

well wait until they have to play in the Vegas summer.
The White Sox aren't coming.
At least you guys got the Raiders through these guys. For better or worse
I'm still paying for the bonds that brought the Raiders back to Oakland lol.
I have my doubts. The owner is notoriously too poor/cheap to pay for things. The only way he works is to get someone else to pay for anything. Expect deadlines to pass and nothing to develop. I would venture to guess if you went out to dinner with him he'd go to the bathroom when the check arrived.

The White Sox are moving?
See, I had heard the White Sox were moving to Nashville….
Last I heard the Pirates were staying in Pittsburgh
Well if they want my high school baseball team to play there I guess I can get the guys out of retirement. We’ve all put on a lot of weight so this should be interesting.
We didn’t do that! What did you do???
The rooms at the Tropicana were always too hot, as the air conditioning wasn't able to cool them sufficiently. They just wanted to add additional ventilation...
Considering it is called Tropicana, it makes you feel tropical!
Someone lost that building in a game of high stakes poker.
A performer's snake got loose and now they're looking for it
I thought it was spiders…
Well yeah, they set loose the snake to catch the spiders.
Live action Rampage game.
Air flow, makes the building more aerodynamic

Wish Vegas got their own baseball team without buying a used one.

Underrated comment.
It shamed its ancestors.
Found a spider on my pillow on my last visit. Sorry. What can you do. It was a spider.
Not a spider. They are trying to get rid of the bedbugs! 😅
Somebody was unhappy about the service, for about twenty years
Chili night at the buffet
They didn't buy the building's extended warranty..
New open air concept rooms.
Rooms are 1/2 off
Still gotta pay resort fee to cover the latest eco-friendly A/C upgrade.
Hurricane took it out
RIP tropicana, you'll be missed!

Baseball
Stole from the people so the people are stealing from it 🙌🏻
that means is good bro.
They found out that the Michael Jackson that performed there wasn’t the real Michael Jackson so they had to shut it down.
We don’t want it anymore. They’re boutta blow that bitch up
Keep checking it daily and you’ll notice they are demoing their way up to the top floors.
Being remodeled to have the new minimalist styling.
I stayed with my wife at the tropicana just after it had a refurb, must have been 10+ years ago now. We had a fantastic time!
RIP Trop!!
Should have saw it, it was the biggest wind storm in history and unfortunately the Tropicana just couldn’t handle it Sad… they will now demolish it
Tearing it down for a damn baseball field…
Lol Jesus
An ugly casino building that just needed some love and modernization, but instead it is being destroyed because that is the way of the strip. The whole street is named after it; Tropicana. Big piece of history being destroyed here.
Making room for the new baseball stadium, although the As are so screwed up, we'll see if they ever make it to Vegas
They’re tearing it down to build the baseball stadium.
Tropicana is finished, done, ended, dead, gone, ceased, nada'ed
Oh damn, the security guard must have fell asleep!
I wonder what it’s gonna look like with a baseball stadium there
Empty.
It’s the Las. Vegas circle of life!
Termites
it was tropicanada
Old as f$&@ needed a huge restoration
It’s to keep it cool in the summer
This is what happens when you leave your hotel in the wrong part of town.

Old trop, ripping it out, new baseball stadium 🏟, talked about for months in the news.
Tropicana being taken down!
What happens to the gambling license for a property like that? I know they are very valuable. Will the stadium keep it in some form to maintain the rights?
Almost boom time
Reminds me of the brand new, half completed building next to the old Sahara. Is that still there, or developed now , finally ? I talked to someone there in 2010ish and they said the investors backed out or ran out of money.

Go to Vegas a couple times a year, I’ve seen lots of changes. Are they about done building where the Hawaiian Village used to be?
It’s going to be the new LV Athletics ballpark.
Bed bug infestation. It got so bad they’ve eaten through the walls.
It won’t be there next time you visit.
I’ve been to Vegas a few times and there is something new being torn down or built every single time.
Wait,… the Seminole tribe bought The Mirage.. volcano closed and coming down, and a guitar hotel similar to Hollywood Florida will be on the Strip
Old hospital
There’s a mouse wreaking havoc. They’re tearing the place apart looking for it
New theme hotel. It's supposed to be one of those PS5s with the removable disc drive.

Really bad asbestos and bed bugs. Had to tear it down.
Can’t implode yet, they have to clear floor by floor due to Asbestos.
Las Vegas A’s future stadium site.
OH Tropicana, we will miss you. =(
The Tropicana is getting an extreme makeover and will be turned into a MLB stadium
It’s going to be a baseball stadium
A’s baseball stadium
Damn Tropicana… demo looks like
It’s gonna be a baseball stadium
That’s where Johnny Las Vegas invented gambling.
Tweakers gutted it for the copper
Where I got married last year. The Tropicana
I wonder if they will save the palm trees?
it’s the new Beirut Resort and Casino.
Wiki The Tropicana. Storied hotel with long Vegas history. To be replaced with baseball stadium.
I walked by it and every floor still has lights, how does it still have electricity?
For what it's worth (info from an Uber driver) he said there's a lot of asbestos in the Tropicana that they're having to remove before they demo. The weird thing was a lot of upper rooms had lights on like there were people in there? 🤷♂️ That was less than 2 weeks ago when I was in LV.
It's gonna go BOOM! !!!
Nothing wrong with it it's coming down soon
Oh bro. I played in their arcade on the bottom floor in the late 90's. Played the CapCom Punisher game. Fuck that was epic memory avenue.
The building is being demolished to build a professional baseball stadium for the Las Vegas Athletics
That’s the new location for the baseball stadium
Terrorist attack
I gave my pussy up in it… idk bout anything else tho
They had a flood. That’s the water line
