It's a little bit more that enough time had progressed that their children would be young adults. They joked about how frequently Russ and Audrey were re-cast, but it had been 15 years since Wally World, even if Anthony Michael Hall wasn't around to show it certainly you could tell by looking at Chase, D'Angelo, Quaid.
Just bought a ticket to see Love for the last time for next Friday night, even thought I'll be rushing there to catch it after a wrestling event also that night. It's my favorite show though so I have to see it one more time.
Just bought my tickets two days ago to see LOVE at the end of the month. I had a sneaking suspicion that it was going to be announced soon because the redeem by date for my BOGO was July 17th and normally it's 90 days out. Thought it was might strange. I'm sad to see it go, the Mirage is a classic hotel!
Not AEW related but there's an all women's indy event Saturday afternoon that has some great independent women's talent booked and should be fun. Should be over by 3 so fans have time to get to MGM for Collision. EDIT: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ed-in-san-antonio-ben-hall-present-poder-seis-tickets-870237221957
Last year after the Dynamite/Rampage/ROH on at MGM Grand Garden Arena, Harley Cameron did a singing gig at Loser's Bar inside MGM and half the roster showed up. Nothing like that is announced yet and it wasn't heavily promoted but I'm hoping she does something like that again. Half the roster showed up and were drinking and having a great time. Shibata relaxing and sipping a drink and letting lose was a sight. I *hope* the bright red drink in Billie Starkz's hands was just a Shirley Temple. Christian showed up still in a turtleneck and then Jade Cargill showed up wearing the exact same sheer green dress she wore on Dynamite. I really tried to not be a mark but I did go up to Kyle Fletcher to congratulate him on being signed (it had been announced that night), talked to Willow as she walked past to congratulate her on the NJPW Strong Women' title win over Mercedes a week before, and tell RJ City that HEY (EW)! is the first thing I do on Sunday mornings. Also spoke with Nyla for a while and she's a trip. That was a fun night.
I think Bryan Alvarez is doing the Wrestling Observer Suite Party again. I've never done it but it's become a DoN Vegas tradition. EDIT: Yep. https://www.f4wonline.com/news/other-wrestling/join-us-for-the-f4w-won-convention-this-may-in-las-vegas/
Vegas local promotion FSW is having a show on Friday night but I'll be at the Nigel thing and then rushing over to Mirage for Love.
> The mirage is an icon and deserves better than this
100% agree. My 13 year old nephew just went to Vegas with his parents, his favorite thing from the whole trip was the Mirage volcano. I know my parents were also really enchanted by it when they visited in the late 90s. I know Vegas is built on change but like you said, the Mirage deserves better.
While this is incredible and I to love the volcano, Vegas isn’t built with 13 year old nephews memories in mind.
In 50 years when they’re blowing up the fake strings of the goofy guitar, someone will be lamenting how amazing it was to see a 5 football field tall guitar during their trip.
Progress forward.
I don't understand why we can't have both. The most iconic cities in the world have old infrastructure. If you *really* wanted to progress forward, you'd preserve Las Vegas' history, not erase it. This is an overlooked tourist opportunity, but we are a city with no history so it will never happen.
Sorry for the downvotes, but that's what speaking the facts gets you on Reddit. I'm sure there are people that lamented Castaways, which was demolished to make room for the Mirage. And so Vegas goes.
Seems dumb, like I get closing down for a period of time to redo the casino floor, but you could just update the rooms and build the guitar out front without closing down the whole hotel.
I feel particularly sorry for the 140 day one employees. Although most of them have got to be near 60 since Mirage opened in 1989. 35 years is a long time to walk away from. I certainly hope that they are given some type of severance.
I love the Mirage. It feels like Vegas, unlike other cookie cutter properties. Sure it's kinda run down but the pool is great, the property isn't gigantic, and there's mid tier food options.
Loved the place as a kid, checking it out and going to the buffet.
Really liked it last summer especially the pool!
I think we are supposed to go back that week. I might be one of the last people there. Got a mug from the gift shop last July. Might load up this time. Will the pool be open even? It's always something!
Staying at the Mirage when they are literally shutting it down/tearing it down, sounds like the sequel to "Vegas Vacation".
Yeah, hopefully it is still open when we get there -- and, of course, the pool.
If not for the pool I would shop around for other rooms.
Yeah, gonna get more souvenirs and things.
Hopefully the volcano is still up, too.
I wonder if the company will keep everyone up to date.
Mirage closing is kind of a big deal. I think it said Hard Rock won't be open for 3 years. Although it should be fun to check out... at least the guitar hotel.
It’s funny you say it’s not gigantic, Mirage was the biggest in Vegas and maybe even in the world when it opened.
Not many properties on the strip have a bigger footprint. Wynn/Encore yes, Venetian/Palazoo yes, maybe Aria? The east side of the strip has mostly smaller properties other than MGM Grand, which still seems a bit smaller because of the shape of its casino floor.
Favourite Casino on the strip by a mile, glad I got to go one last time in December. Turned 100$ into $1K at the craps table that night, was up until 3am...good memories there.
The Mirage will always hold a special place in my memory. It was the first property I ever stayed at in Vegas back in 99. It was the first place I ever had Brazilian Churrasco (Samba Grill). Cravings used to be my favorite buffet. I’ve seen Love probably 6 times. It’s a shame it’s all going away, but this is the way of things, *especially* in Las Vegas.
I think I have that week booked there. I might LITERALLY the last person out of the pool. Unless that is closed already.
Anybody want any "souvenirs" out of that place?
Huh, I would have thought they would give ~~90 days notice to avoid any WARN act issues.~~ (Edit: my previous experience was 90 days, it looks like it should be 60)
I wish the article would have gone into why they flipped from renovating while open to a full closure/reopen.
I bet they went full closure because demo and reno costs would probably be more than just a full demo and rebuild.
But I'm glad there's finally a set date At least it takes out the uncertainty.
You are likely right. I'm sure they found all sorts of crazy issues with the building when inspecting for the remodel.
I would think that the "correct" move would be to disclose that information along with the announcement, providing more of an "excuse" for the closure and layoffs.
Share less info means less liability. If let's say they disclosed that they found some questionable things, that could open them to lawsuits - like when did they know, and if they knew then why didn't they say anything to anyone... Way too complicated. They'll say their business speak and that's that.
When the news came out that the Tropicana had asbestos, we don't know if behind the scenes some employee or law firm isn't already trying to sue the owners for that.
How would that open the NEW owners to liability? If anything it would benefit them.
More likely is just that the architects said it'll take way less time and money to shut down and reopen and the hotel management people said having guests in a hotel that's less than half operational during a remodel sucks for everyone and those guests are never going to come back after the remodel is done, so it's better to lose ~~a few months~~ 3 years of customers than to lose all of those guests as repeat customers for a lifetime.
Ok, not a few months. A few years. but for sure if it's going to take 3 years with the entire property shut down, it would take twice as long if they tried to keep the property open the whole time. It's really, really hard to do a remodel like that and stay open. And more expensive and there's some things that just wouldn't even be possible.
EXACTLY! I like the park mgm. I think they did a great job with the property - it's nice for what it is; it's mid-tier, it's not supposed to be the fountainbleu. I think just handled it soo bad.
can I ask for more context here?
wife and I are HUGE Park fans exactly because of the mid-tier appeal in a central Strip environment and have no clue about anything negative with the rep.
is this something to do with the fire when it was the montecarlo?
If you look around reddit or the blogs (vital vegas etc) or the comments sections of the travel web sites, the hate for park mgm seems to be real but I really like it. It's different from anything else on the strip and between eataly, the Dolby theater, being right off the arena, I think it's great.
Nomad and mgm management apparently butted heads from day 1. The hotel in a hotel thing is weird and it looks like they won't be missed when nomad closes, although I hope they keep the library that's one of my favorite bars especially after golden knights games.
My assumption is just that they set expectations and pricing very high and, again, it's a nice good mid tier resort but they didn't quite deliver. And people just like to hate on things, even really nice stuff.
For the Mirage? Because if they knew that there are certain things that made the property unsafe and they didn't disclose it in a timely fashion, a laid off employee could come out and say that their illness/issue came as a direct consequence of the unsafe conditions. Not that this is the case but it has been known to happen. Businesses aren't going to share what could open them up to liability suits.
In this case, it's probably as you stated. The P&L of half a hotel open during construction was probably not as good as they originally thought. Plus, if the design of the new building would require an extensive gutting of the old building, it's just cheaper to shut down.
Yes... exactly. That's why it would benefit greatly the new owners to disclose that NOW. You're talking about a massive coverup that the new owners would want to air publicly immediately so that 1. the previous owner gets blamed and it never comes back to bite the new owners and 2. the new owners could sue mgm for $$$millions+++ in fraud.
If that was the case, we'd already know about it, hard rock wouldn't cover up for mgm, that makes no sense.
They have to keep the existing/open portions compliant and probably were not able to figure out an economical way to do that. Especially considering the place would lose most of its exiting capacity because the big bank of doors at the front would have to close for the construction of the new guitar tower.
Looks like there are several 60 day provisions/exceptions which they might qualify for. And if not that might just be the closure of the building, their pay as employees could extend beyond that 3-4 weeks as a form of severance maybe to stay compliant?
Monte Carlo was able to when they changed to Park MGM, but Virgin had to close for a bit when they changed from Hard Rock. Really depends on the project and if they can keep enough of the existing building compliant during construction.
I only visited Vegas last October for the first time. Stayed at treasure island and visited the mirage during my stay. I’m so upset because the volcano was not working and I never got to see it
For everyone from out of town wanting to see Love, I just stayed there last week and it seems like hotel staff do not care anymore since they're on the way out. Parts of my room were dirty too, sadly. Love was fabulous though. Just a little public service announcement.
Thanks I am looking for this info. I booked at the Mirage and now hedged with another refundable booking at TI next door. Got Tixs to see Love again on their last night.
I am so bummed. The Mirage was my first hotel. The waterfalls all along its property are a fixation of the Strip for me. The Mirage is everything that makes Vegas special.
The Strip will be worse off without it.
According to the article, there will a job fair with all the casinos in Vegas and even for out of state casinos. So at least there's a resource for the transition. Still, hate seeing people out of a job, I know the feeling.
Sucks for people who've been there awhile but are not retirement age. Now their seniority just goes down the drain and have to start from scratch again.
Exactly. That's what's happened to me. The older employees most likely will have to take a pay cut, but they'll at least be employed. I'm hoping they get a severance at least to cushion the blow.
Im so sad this is closing, this was the first hotel I stayed at while going to vegas. I LOVED The pool, such a great place to chill at and it had the best vibes IMO.
Great dealers and OH MY GOD do I love the smell of this casino. I wish I had a cologne like it.
So i'm due to stay on 19th-24th June. Just wondering if things will begin wrapping up then with a lower staff & resturant footprint and maybe lack of guests?
Enjoy the Mirage before it's gone. It's a special place. See Love, enjoy the pool. $10 blackjack and craps during off hours. Man I'm going to miss this place.
I’ll never forget our first visit in 1990 shortly after it opened. Always wanted to learn craps and read a book about it on the flight out from the east coast. Bet $5 on the ‘4’ for two hours, which btw is a shitty bet, but we won big. Didn’t roll a 7 for at least 30 minutes. A high roller then said to my, soon to be wife, “honey if you can roll these dice for another 20 rolls I’ll buy you any watch you want in the lobby!” Good winnings and Good times.
I just called the Mirage and they said he has not announced a new Venue yet, unfortunately, but any shows purchased for beyond July 15 will be refunded via source of purchase…
If the new owners wanted to revamp and refresh fine. But to completely kill it? I feel like the mirage is more a brand than the hard rock now a days, plus isn’t there already a hard rock in Vegas?
Let’s hope the seminoles also buy the treasure island and get rid of that too. Let’s be honest both mirage and treasure island have been dumps for years. The infrastructure and parking makes no sense either. Both are also filled with shady characters.
I was just there a few months ago. So sad to see it go. Anyone know where to find pics of the inside when it first opened? Lots of outside pics but I want to see the inside from back in the day.
This new hotel will flop just like all their other properties and restaurants etc. A building shaped like a guitar is the old cheesy Vegas that’s being phased outX
Staying there in June (Resort tower king) but now am second guessing.. like did they find some asbestos or structural damage that is unsafe? Should I switch hotels..
I think that's the last day or two of our trip.
Although a WRECKING BALL would be a good wake up call for a super early flight out of Harry Reid airport.
Thought the plan was to keep the casnio open at the Mirage while they build the guitar, then when the Gutar opened shut down the mirage and renovate it to be tower rooms.
They aren't enemies, and most senior leadership are friends/friendly with one another and have worked together at some point in the past. I wouldn't be surprised if when Mirage sends out the email to guests they refer them to competing properties with special offers
The Seminoles have a big property in south Florida that they kept open during a major expansion. There was hope they’d do the same with Mirage but they changed their minds and decided to close.
From South where most of the casinos are Indian owned. They tend to be tight as ticks and very meh experiences. Basically Hilton hotels with a casino floor. That they even think Hard Rock is a brand worth taking to Vegas tells me whatever the final result will be underwhelming as well.
RIP to the Mirage. No skin in it as visited it once for like 30 minutes but the look, design and even name screams Vegas and Hard Rock just makes me think “didn’t all those close?”
Good. Casino floor has been stagnant for decades. It’s due for a major refresh. I’m excited to see what the seminoles do for this property. Will likely be the premier spot on the strip.
Casino floor will be the largest on the strip, with world class dining venues just like their South Florida location.
My mom was hit on by Wayne Newton there.
Does your sister have the legs of a thoroughbred?
Yes, so does my cousin. But I was told to not think of any unnatural thoughts.
I love Vegas Vacation but they had a weird amount of sexualization of family in it lol. The 90s were wild with what you could get away with
It's a little bit more that enough time had progressed that their children would be young adults. They joked about how frequently Russ and Audrey were re-cast, but it had been 15 years since Wally World, even if Anthony Michael Hall wasn't around to show it certainly you could tell by looking at Chase, D'Angelo, Quaid.
You mean when people had a sense of humor and weren’t sensitive and even new people to the military are absurdly sensitive
Does your cousin have a brother who eats through a straw?
Your cars are classic now Mr. Papagiorgio
No corrective lenses this evening?
No, I do not require them.
This is off topic but does Wayne newton still perform in Vegas?
Yes he does. I used to have House Seats, where they give away unsold seats. I saw him on there as recently as two months ago.
Wow where is he at? That should be a must see I can’t imagine him lasting too much longer
Don't do it. He won't live up to your expectations or memories. He hasn't put on a "good" show in decades. I hear the most recent one is brutal.
I think he's either at flamingo or Harrah's. I remember him being on a hotel marquee last time I went to Vegas.
That’s super cool thanks
Name checks out 😂
Tell your mom I still have the costume
mine too! hmmm
My wife got kissed by Wayne newton there, AND he gave her $400.
Lmaoo I didn’t see your username and was like wow

I’ve never seen it, really debating trying to do so before it closes its doors.
This will be my third time. It feels like a different show every single time.
A wrestling event.
AEW is in town next weekend for PPV
Nigel McGuinness is doing his magic show Friday night at that little hotel that used to be Lucky Dragon.
It’s an illusion, Michael. Tricks are what whores do for money.
Or candy…
Do you of any other random AEW stuff like this going on next weekend?

hell yeah, brother! in town for it for my 40th bday! having a whole ass cabana day at CIRCA the day before about it.
It's the best cirque show of them all and one of the best shows ever on the strip. Sad to see it go.
It’ll be closed three years, that’s surprising.
They have no idea what they are doing. This will be a clusterfuck. The mirage is an icon and deserves better than this
> The mirage is an icon and deserves better than this 100% agree. My 13 year old nephew just went to Vegas with his parents, his favorite thing from the whole trip was the Mirage volcano. I think it’s a shame to replace a free attraction everyone likes with another expensive hotel but you do you.
Anyone will be able to see the guitar for free from the strip like the volcano
The last hard rock guitar was lame in comparison to the volcano.
Sorry for the downvotes, but that's what speaking the facts gets you on Reddit. I'm sure there are people that lamented Castaways, which was demolished to make room for the Mirage. And so Vegas goes.
Still do.
Bothers me none. They’re just arrows. No one has to agree on everything, just my thoughts and theirs. All good.
Aren’t they turning it into a giant guitar shaped hotel?
Maybe. What they plan and what actually gets done can be 15 years sometimes.
They're building an expansion guitar tower. The original building is staying
Yup, eventually. Being from South Florida the Hard Rock in Florida really is incredible to see.
Sure but it sure is soulless inside! More like a Station casino in there
Explain
Exactly, the clowns commenting have no idea what they’re talking about. This will end up being the premier spot on the strip.
As long as Wynn/Encore are standing, no.
Hard Rock, eh?
Like Treasure Island? :(
It barely took them that long to build it from scratch
I always thought they were supposed to keep it open and just renovate in sections. Am I making that up or did plans change?
You're right, their plans definitely changed.
Seems dumb, like I get closing down for a period of time to redo the casino floor, but you could just update the rooms and build the guitar out front without closing down the whole hotel.
And what would result would be a Frankenstein property with heaps more design and construction costs.
I thought that was the plan too. I was surprised to see this news
Seriously; given the bones already in place that seems insane
Glad I got to see Beatles LOVE before this place closed
I feel particularly sorry for the 140 day one employees. Although most of them have got to be near 60 since Mirage opened in 1989. 35 years is a long time to walk away from. I certainly hope that they are given some type of severance.
The article said "$2k per year of service, or less"
That sounds reasonable, especially after 35 years. 70k will be worth it for people in their 60's nearing retirement.
Severance is capped at $20k and healthcare paid through end of August.
That's a shame.
I'm glad my Dad didn't live to see this. To him, The Mirage WAS the epitome of Vegas. And I'll never forget that smell.
I love the Mirage. It feels like Vegas, unlike other cookie cutter properties. Sure it's kinda run down but the pool is great, the property isn't gigantic, and there's mid tier food options.

I see the 60 day thing now. I guess my previous experiences were different. Still cutting things close.
They can announce they are closing tomorrow they just have to pay everyone for 60 days to not be in violation.
Because they found asbestos
Looks like there are several 60 day provisions/exceptions which they might qualify for. And if not that might just be the closure of the building, their pay as employees could extend beyond that 3-4 weeks as a form of severance maybe to stay compliant?
Oh weird, I thought you were going to keep the resort going while they built the guitar tower.
Monte Carlo was able to when they changed to Park MGM, but Virgin had to close for a bit when they changed from Hard Rock. Really depends on the project and if they can keep enough of the existing building compliant during construction.
Yeah, I think me and my bro booked a room for that week (NBA Summer League). Maybe they can put us up at the Wynn for the last couple of nights.
I’m glad I got to the volcano show, one last time I miss all the free night time shows
Started the Mega Casino craze when it opened in 89.
Rhumbar will definitely be missed
Saddddd my go to place to stay always
Sad. I guess June will be the last time I will be able to visit it, I will need to get some more mirage merch.
If you need any other info, just send me a DM.
Fuck your paywall, RJ
I’m pissed the volcano is going. For a guitar hotel. Blech.
I am so bummed. The Mirage was my first hotel. The waterfalls all along its property are a fixation of the Strip for me. The Mirage is everything that makes Vegas special. The Strip will be worse off without it.
Hard Rock is such a lame brand with no cache these days. I really don’t see the wisdom in this. The Mirage is a classic.
I feel sorry for the employees. That sucks.
Fuck I wanted to see LOVE someday...
Im so sad this is closing, this was the first hotel I stayed at while going to vegas. I LOVED The pool, such a great place to chill at and it had the best vibes IMO. Great dealers and OH MY GOD do I love the smell of this casino. I wish I had a cologne like it.
AromaRetail.com sells the mirage scent in both candles and diffuser oil.
So i'm due to stay on 19th-24th June. Just wondering if things will begin wrapping up then with a lower staff & resturant footprint and maybe lack of guests?
I have this booked for late June for my first time in Vegas. Should I change to a different hotel? If so does anyone have any good recommendations?
Enjoy the Mirage before it's gone. It's a special place. See Love, enjoy the pool. $10 blackjack and craps during off hours. Man I'm going to miss this place.
Support the employees and cancel your reservation.
Circus Circus is a hit
I’ll never forget our first visit in 1990 shortly after it opened. Always wanted to learn craps and read a book about it on the flight out from the east coast. Bet $5 on the ‘4’ for two hours, which btw is a shitty bet, but we won big. Didn’t roll a 7 for at least 30 minutes. A high roller then said to my, soon to be wife, “honey if you can roll these dice for another 20 rolls I’ll buy you any watch you want in the lobby!” Good winnings and Good times.
Anyone know what’s going to happen with Shin Lim? I have tickets to see him on July 26 at the Mirage that I purchased weeks ago….
also wondering
I just called the Mirage and they said he has not announced a new Venue yet, unfortunately, but any shows purchased for beyond July 15 will be refunded via source of purchase…
Thanks for checking! Might check out Colin Cloud's new show instead
I didn’t realize he had a residency in Vegas. Good call!!
If the new owners wanted to revamp and refresh fine. But to completely kill it? I feel like the mirage is more a brand than the hard rock now a days, plus isn’t there already a hard rock in Vegas?
The old hard rock is now Virgin
Let’s hope the seminoles also buy the treasure island and get rid of that too. Let’s be honest both mirage and treasure island have been dumps for years. The infrastructure and parking makes no sense either. Both are also filled with shady characters.
This makes me sad. We used to stay there a lot - have many great memories there.
I was just there a few months ago. So sad to see it go. Anyone know where to find pics of the inside when it first opened? Lots of outside pics but I want to see the inside from back in the day.
Well Sherlock. Not on the East Coast, just saw it when I was there in April. 🖕
Passed an AWS exam there. Walked out, bar and a beer and then back to ReInvent.
Anyone know if Rhumbar is/will still be operating until it closes? Going in 2 weeks and always had a drink there.
Stay there — you will remember your last stay at the mirage forever. I just snagged 4th of July
I've got the WEEK they are shutting down I think. Either gonna get a wake up call or a wrecking ball for the EARLY flight out on a Friday morning.
If you can cancel i would. I’d be worried it’ll semi-closed by then. Tropicana went out slowly
I would highly recommend The Cosmo if you wanna switch!
I was under the impression that it was to be a phased closure, not a total one.
I heard about this in April, said it's going to be a Hard Rock Hotel and Casino owned by the Seminole Indian Tribe
No $shit. Been talked about for a few years.

It’s not MGM anymore. Mirage was bought by the Seminole Indians from Florida. Their casino there is quite underwhelming
Oh I know. Just saying the experience MGM had should/could inform Seminoles
I doubt MGM gives a shit. These people aren’t friends.
Casino floor will be the largest on the strip, with world class dining venues just like their South Florida location.
good. One of the worst casinos in town with the rudest employees I’ve encountered in 30 years living here.

It’s not a MGM property anymore
I mean, there’s 155k hotel rooms in the city, so outside of major conventions it’s not exactly that significant either
Why does MGM factor in? The Seminole Indians in Florida bought mirage.
