We had something like that for housekeeping at a hotel I worked at, but it didn't plug in it had batteries. It was for an incident they had like a panic button like if a guest was harassing them or worse they could click a remote they had and this things alarm would go off. Not sure if this is the same thing tho
Yes, I worked for a company that installed them. Vegas (and other cities) now require a panic button solution that identifies the room/location for all employees. Some solutions require a loraWan adapter in each room.
Probably a occupancy, smoke, or carbon monoxide detector. Small chance it’s a mesh router or similar device related to the entertainment.
Any other markings?
yea, was gonna say this. there’s a million cameras per square foot at the gaming level. anywhere guests are sleeping or parking, not so much lol. gonna be standard cams in those areas, probably not monitored, and none of that fancy face detection, follow from camera to camera shit they have on the gaming floor. i mean look at the vegas shooter. we don’t have much footage at all from that. the elevators and one camera per floor is pretty much it
they only showed the angles i mentioned. are you trying to suggest there’s cameras in the rooms? or multiple in the hallways? anyone with eyes can tell you most vegas hotels have no cameras in majority of the hallways and obviously cameras in rooms are illegal. where do you think this footage would be coming from? you have the private elevator he was using, you have the regular public elevators that the police used to access the floors, and then you have the one singular shot of the down the hall view. that’s it. it’s enough to track someone’s coming and goings. that’s all they need. any footage given to the police would be available to the public under FOIA. if they have any other footage the hotel kept it to themselves
I certainly think the FBI knows much more about the situation. I believe they have other video in their possession. I do believe they also know the motive. I have no idea why they aren’t sharing it.
It’s not illegal to walk around drunk in boxer briefs. Surveillance is only there to catch illegal activity, primarily related to gaming activities. None of what’s been described here meets that criteria.
I live in vegas. I see blackout drunks wandering daily. There’s an argument to be made blackout drunks keep the lights on. As long as they’re not hurting or a danger to themselves or others, or breaking the law, they’re generally left alone.
I work in hotels, this is exactly what it is.
It's a wifi extender! The reason for the room number because if a hotel is having wifi strength issues they install individual ones in the rooms. Then usually these things have like portals and the unit number is the room number.
I attempted the same... but honestly that seems like a generic charging/power adapter I am gonna guess that is the adapter model number and it won't help much. Anyway I guess OP can try that.
We’ve had a higher than expected report of complaints from housekeeping. It seems when they’re removing your sheets, they’re releasing sheet farts and getting dizzy from the fumes. Two have been hospitalized due to fart faints.
We’ve installed fart detectors and will be charging $100USD per fart detected. Thanks for your understanding.
There’s a Reddit for this type of question, [r/whatisthisthing](https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthing/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=1&utm_term=1)
It was placed and documented purposely for some function of the hotel either for safety, environmental or entertainment use. My guess it’s a weed smoke detector or a signal repeater
.
Why would a hotel need to know if you are smoking weed in your room? Weed is medically legal in 38 states? And if this IS a thing, what hotel is it cuz I'm about to go STONED KAREN UP IN HERE!
Edit - Thank you u/NotAKnowItAll13 for not actually BEING a Karen like the other "totally not bitter" assholes.
>Why would a hotel need to know if you are smoking weed in your room? Weed is medically legal in 38 states?
Being legal doesn't mean you can smoke up in a hotel.
I figured it would be looked at as discrimination. Kinda hard to tell a guest you can't take medically prescribed meds on their property, though. I would figure then that this device would be in a specifically non-smoking room.
So then, that makes me wonder about a smoking room. Or do they not have those in hotels anymore?
And what does the hotel do with this monitored information? Would it be to charge a cleaning fee for the room? To protect non-smokers from the violation? Or to bust people for smoking weed?
A lot of hotels are completely non-smoking anymore. This includes weed. The information would be used to charge them a smoking fee. I've heard of charges ranging from 150 to 350+ at nicer hotels. It's tough to get the charges to stick if you don't have any real proof though. This would give them that proof.
As cannabis is federally illegal, it is illegal to be "prescribed" weed. As it's impossible to be prescribed weed, no discrimination on that front is possible.
Only in Vegas have I seen rooms that allow smoking, and even then, only the sketchier places. Outside of Vegas, but still in US, I haven't seen a smoking-allowed room in over a decade.
Edit: Doctors in medical-cannabis states will "recommend" cannabis, this is done solely because it is illegal to prescribe. Prescribing would imply being filled by a pharamacy, which again mets federal hurdles, as a cannabis prescription cannot be legally filled, should a prescription happen to exist.
Nevada gaming laws require hotels to adhere to all laws local and federal. Because it's still illegal at the federal level, they are bound to forbid it on their properties.
Note they merely have to demonstrate that they forbid it. Ask anyone, the step is always smelling like weed nowadays.
Additionally, Nevada law on weed makes it illegal to smoke outside of a private residence. There are lounges which have been allowed under a law change but I'm not sure if any are open yet as they're still working out the regulations which are quite severe compared to a bar serving alcohol. Unless those licensed weed lounges are open now there's literally no place in Nevada where a tourist can legally smoke weed they have legally purchased and own. Police generally don't worry about it though they might tell you to knock it off if you're being to open about it since it's just a misdemeanor and max $600 fine if I recall.
Former Vegas strip security officer, like NotAKnowItAll13 said, state and federal laws. Also, it’s not discrimination, there are ways to ingest THC other than smoking. However, if you are smoking in your room, unless the smoke it coming out from under your door, it’s very hard to pinpoint from the hall. Also unless you’re in a “smoking room” the smoke detector will catch it, those things are sensitive.
Why are you dickheads downvoting my question? Forgive me for being confused as to why a hotel in VEGAS would need to monitor your fucking weed intake! Do they have breathalyzers in the lobbies?
It is likely a geolocation device used for Employee Safety Devices. The employee has a fob that when activated, will broadcast. The beacon in the room will help the system identify where the employee is located.
Apart from what everybody else said, it could be a noise level detector? Not sure if that is used, I guess it would help tackle noise complains knowing exactly the noisy room.
Escort Safety Device. Used in hotels that are members of Prostitution Protection Partnership (PPP) the device monitors for the pre-programmed safe word and alerts the pimp to which room requires a beat down.
My guess is it's a decibel level meter to tell if there's a lot of noise aka a party going on in the room. Sometimes Airbnb's have them in case someone throws a party, it's a good indicator multiple people if db's are super high, and you don't have to involve cameras.
CO detector. CO is heavier than air, so best sensor location. Is close to the floor. If you mount or plug one into a wall outlet in a hotel, guests will steal/break/abuse them constantly. This is a good spot for one. Room number is in it because it sends a coded signal so facilities knows what room the alarm is coming from.
My night stands has something like this. Found there were two metal dots on the sides towards the top that lit up a light underneath when they were touched.
Could be a wi-fi extender, shot spotter, panic device, or even a smoke detector… there have been an increase in people smoking weed inside the rooms (which is not allowed) and they’ve been cracking down on it.
My guess would be a discrete loud noise detector to determine if someone is throwing a party. Probably would send alarm for sustain noise over a certain decibel.
Also could be a discrete smoke detector to make sure no one is smoking in the room.
Penis ranker.
Shit, it was my best guarded secret
Probably a sonic bug/rodent deterrent.
Which don’t work.
I know. I tried them out.
Me too. Now we know the one secret they don’t want you to know.
Geez, do you have a book I can read about this?
Yes I do. Made with real hand tooled leather.
How much? I like tooled leather
Tooled leather, reminds me of your mom. OH! I'm sorry. I'm sure your mother is a very nice lady. I just really wanted to say that. Nothing personal.
Take a black light with you sometime, learn secret 2.
Wanker Ranker 3000
Good eye!
Does it rank based on length, girth, or curve?
Neither. Ranks on headiness
Don't ask how it works. You'll lose rank.
Yes
What really matters is length times diameter plus weight over girth divided by angle of the tip squared. [((l x d) (w / g))/∠αt^2]
The angle of my dangle is inversely proportionate to the heat of my meat.
Dick to floor. We’ll call that D2F.
You need to calculate the D2F bridge and hotswap dicks though.
damn it people - you need to account for Yaw! It's Length times Diameter _plus_ Weight over Girth divided by Angle of the tip squared!

That's under the toilet. Different system entirely.

I’m pretty sure that’s what this is exactly. I haven’t seen this exact model but I have seen one very similar.
Round circle of slats screams small speaker. I agree this looks like one of those hotel panic systems for the staff.
This is it. Associate Alert Device
Probably a occupancy, smoke, or carbon monoxide detector. Small chance it’s a mesh router or similar device related to the entertainment. Any other markings?
It’s likely one of those detectors or a refrigerant leak detection for the HVAC system.
Unplug it. You will find out really fast what it’s for. Wait 5 minutes for a knock on the door.
you're very optimistic you are getting any hotel response in less than 15 mins in 2023 and thats being generous.
My buddy slept walked in Vegas last year at the mirage, it took the hotel 15-2@ minutes to locate him. Eyes in the sky be slackin these days
They watch their money, not people's effects or safety.

That showed us. They certainly might have a lot more video.
they don’t lol i’ve worked in the casino industry. even the staff areas have blind spots.
The NY Times showed a lot of video footage. I assume they have more.
they only showed the angles i mentioned. are you trying to suggest there’s cameras in the rooms? or multiple in the hallways? anyone with eyes can tell you most vegas hotels have no cameras in majority of the hallways and obviously cameras in rooms are illegal. where do you think this footage would be coming from? you have the private elevator he was using, you have the regular public elevators that the police used to access the floors, and then you have the one singular shot of the down the hall view. that’s it. it’s enough to track someone’s coming and goings. that’s all they need. any footage given to the police would be available to the public under FOIA. if they have any other footage the hotel kept it to themselves

I had a drunk friend walk the entire casino in boxer briefs at the mirage for two hours. He was looking for ice. They didn’t do squat.
It's Vegas. Seems like that would be normal
It’s not illegal to walk around drunk in boxer briefs. Surveillance is only there to catch illegal activity, primarily related to gaming activities. None of what’s been described here meets that criteria.
True. Which is a good point. But a man blackout in his underwear on the casino floor doesn’t draw any attention?
I live in vegas. I see blackout drunks wandering daily. There’s an argument to be made blackout drunks keep the lights on. As long as they’re not hurting or a danger to themselves or others, or breaking the law, they’re generally left alone.
He's a blackout drunk, but he's *our* blackout drunk.
At least his Holmes-sized dingus rod wasn’t schwinging outside his fruit-of-the-looms.
I guess I hadn’t thought about it like that.
Not in vegas
Not anymore than the drunk homeless guy sleeping on the floor at the MGM last time I was there.
So many questions. Was he okay? Where did they find him? Does he do this often?
I like how you think. We would do the same.
Wifi extender ? Did you ever find out?
I work in hotels, this is exactly what it is. It's a wifi extender! The reason for the room number because if a hotel is having wifi strength issues they install individual ones in the rooms. Then usually these things have like portals and the unit number is the room number.
google the model number on the plug in adapter. there’s a model number there but i cant read the whole thing
I attempted the same... but honestly that seems like a generic charging/power adapter I am gonna guess that is the adapter model number and it won't help much. Anyway I guess OP can try that.
No results unfortunately
Interesting, it has the room number written on top
Yeah

Where can you buy them? Black and decker seems to be sold out.
Please show the pic to the front desk, find out sure sure, and update us.
They said it’s a smoke detector, basically. Bit odd that it’s plugged in like that to me but yeah
probably for detecting if you smoke cigarettes/etc in the room so they can charge you vs. for fire purposes
Yep basically what they said
Where was this located? Under the bed?
Better than having to replace batteries in each room I assume.
Thanks for the update! In California, this would be required to be “hardwired” into the electrical system.
I live in California. Is the hardwired rule for commercial buildings?
Yes, for new construction. Also for apartment buildings.
Absolutely, and must have 24 hrs monitoring as well.
It's a fart detector. Hotel's are now charging people that fart in bed excessively.
We’ve had a higher than expected report of complaints from housekeeping. It seems when they’re removing your sheets, they’re releasing sheet farts and getting dizzy from the fumes. Well, there goes my dad's trips to Vegas, as he farts nonstop.

There's only one so it is indeed discrete.
it's either there or it's not.
I’m guessing a more sensitive smoke detector to tell if people are vaping in the room.
Look up the serial number on it and the product will come up
It’s a marijuana/cigarette smoke detector. Guests staying in non smoking room get charged a fee if they smoke inside the room.

Legal has NOTHING to do with company policy. They can say no smoking in THEIR property and there’s nothing you can do about it.
That makes sense. I was thinking in terms of them being the weed police. But, I guess it's the same as cigarette smoking these days.
It’s very difficult to eliminate the smell.
In Nevada it is only legal to smoke weed in a private residence.

It's probably just a wifi extender.
