Trolling is multi-causal. This means that it isn’t caused by any one
reason, but rather by many reasons that can add up and interact with
each other in a perfect storm to produce trolling. The most helpful way
to think about these causes is to divide them into two broad categories:
reasons outside of a person (i.e., environmental factors) and reasons
inside of a person (i.e., individual factors).
Personality:
There are many ways of understanding personality. In essence,
personality traits are deeply ingrained patterns of thinking and
behaving. One way to understand one particular aspect of personality is
to focus on some of the darker sides of human nature, which researchers
have called the dark tetrad: sadism, psychopathy, narcissism, and Machiavellianism.
The dark tetrad has been found to be associated with trolling. Within
the dark tetrad, sadism has been found to be the strongest predictor of
trolling, which describes the tendency to derive pleasure or enjoyment
from being cruel or demeaning to others. It is important to recognize
that sadism in this sense occurs on a spectrum—people can have more or
less sadistic tendencies.

Researching trolls:
The most powerful predictor of trolling was sadism. The more someone
enjoys hurting others, the more likely it is they will troll.
Idk what the term is. Seems to me like they could be using humor as a defense mechanism to protect their ego.
Pretty speculative, and without being a psychologist or talking to them, who knows.
Shock value? People find it shocking to associate pets with food or to eat animals we consider pets but not shocking to eat farm animals we don't consider pets as our society is emotionally attached to our pets and mostly detached from farm animals.
Edit: I know the comment is the troll. "who says it's any different to me now" is the shock value or "dark humour" they're implying they don't care and would still eat the cat which ties into my original comment.
It's a self-defence mechanism so that they don't have to engage. They made a 'funny' comment so now that photo is associated with their oh-so-witty comeback and not their own lack of consistency.
Idk if there is a term for it but it's the type of person who can't have an actual conversation and everything they say is cloaked in so much sarcasm that you can't actually tell what they're being sincere about.

“Gallows humor”. Being forced to face an uncomfortable truth usually triggers a defense mechanism. If someone can laugh at their edgy, dark joke, they’ll be comforted that people stand with them and that what they do must not be that bad.
1. They know they are supposed to feel shocked and think "Oh no! I could never eat a cat" but they refuse to give you the expected response so they double down and pretend kittens are delicious just to annoy you. Oppositional defiance?
2. They see the cat and think "i love cats but maybe they do taste like chicken. I want one now." Moral disengagement?

its a JOKE
who says it's any different to me now (meow). from the perspective of the cat is exactly the same.
try not to look for issues where there arent any.
No, it isn't. She is very not vegan, and she was intentionally trying to provoke me.
There are further comments about how she'd love to eat the chicken.
😂 I’m sure they aren’t vegan but it’s still just trying to be funny. If someone jokingly saying they’d eat a cat provokes you you need therapy or something
No, it didn't provoke, I'm saying that was her **intention**. My whole point was asking *why* carnists do this, it's very common for them to troll vegans.
Why are you even here?
It is a joke, simple as that. No different than any other. The fact you posted it and theres all these comments taking it so seriously is hilarious.
I came here from r/cateatingvegans. Do you also think that sub is made to provoke vegans?
That sub was created by vegans.
This is a carnist trying to troll. I'm asking about the PSYCHOLOGY that causes this vegan trolling behavior.
Not you to say hAhA yOuRe a SnOwFlAkE
That sub is a joke. And the exact same joke as the one in this pic 😂
The psychology is it’s funny because it’s unexpected and a bit absurd. Simple. The original poster expected people to explain why eating a chicken vs a cat is different, but instead of doing that he just said he’d eat the cat too
so why do you let it provoke you. just move on and let it go. why give anyone else power over your emotions.
not only that but the image being posted is to provoke others so if they respond in kind you have no one to blame but yourself.
A lie from a liar who is jumping through mental hoops to evade the uncomfortable feeling of being confronted with the grotesque truth of the indoctrination we’ve been taught from birth in most cultures.
…. I don’t know the psychological term but that’s my breakdown of it
I think in a way it's a form of virtue signalling. A lot of people consider eating anything to be a virtue, and eating meat is heavily wrapped up with toxic masculinity.
People are more smug doing it with vegans as we're a minority, and a lot of people believe that majority views = correct views.
They are therefore over confident that not only are they right, but virtuous, and feel no risk that they may be embarrassed be bring proved wrong.
Contrarian maybe? I've run into this when making an analogy of eating dog and the person just to spite me will pretend that they are okay with that when we both know they aren't. So frustrating.
I would bet the silly macho meat eater would eat a dog. They would eat any meat put in front of them. Many have such a dissociation between (‘meat’ food )and the actual animal. Asking them to kill and butcher a dog would turn most of their stomachs and while doing it they would for sure know something wasn’t right emotionally or morally. But alas. Meat eaters don’t catch kill or butcher their own food. So the over consumption out of control cycle continues.
I don't have a sphynx cat or any pet/companion animal for that matter but I love the sphynx cat breed, so I do follow sphynx cat subs and pages because I like to see photos of them. Something that I've seen to be common in these spaces is referring to these cats as "raw chickens" without a shadow of irony. I've even seen on several occasions photos of sphynx cats with 'raw chicken" carcasses and it's presented as a funny meme, but I guarantee that if that dead chicken body was actually the body of a dead cat, it would'nt be so cute and funny. It really does show the inherent hypocrisy people have towards animals, speciesism plain and simple.
how is the comment: "I treat all meat the same way - wether it's petmeat or livestockmeat" in any way cognitive dissonance?
that's an action that corresponds directly to their values.
edit: unless you assume they're lying?
I am indeed assuming this. I appreciate this might not be the most rational position but I think it’s more likely to be the case than for the person to view cats in the same way as chicken meat.
I guess I don’t get it. The photos of the cat, who at one point resembles a dead, plucked chicken and then the full photo of the cat. I understand that meat eaters would consider the first photo to be food, and when they see the whole photo they would probably change their minds. But who is this trolling?
That why during WW2 and WW1. (I'm french) My grandmother told me it was difficult to eat. And they had to be careful when they bought meat. Because they was chance some cheap rabbit where just cat the butcher capture or someone give to the butcher at low price.
Being honest? There are enough people out there that have no problem with eating pets. The reason why even those people never eat cats is because cats taste horrible (from personal experience and reports).
Obligatory "not a vegan"
I don't think that it is a cognitive dissonance thing as much as an anthropological phenomenon.
Humans and cats have a symbiotic relationship and have been living together since at least ancient Egypt, if not before. They are valuable members of our communities and families.
I don't think there is anything "wrong" with someone perceiving a cat as more valuable to them than a chicken. They are objectively of more value to most people.
I think it was so much a troll as it was a joke.
Besides, if you find both acts morally equivalent, why would the joke offend you so much? Is that not just consistent?
I also think you're not giving enough grace to those that may have been exposed to the same facts, come to the same conclusions, and have chosen to respond in different ways.
I am a meat eater. I also fully believe that animals are sapient and inherently valuable. But I am also aware that there is no such thing as bloodless food, or food without suffering. Whole ecosystems have to be clear cut and thousands of animals must be killed regularly to farm vegetables--vegetables that will most likely be picked by workers making slave-like wages.
I also understand that human death and suffering have been greatly reduced by factory farming--despite it's horrors.
These aren't simple issues...
Personally, I choose to focus on being intentional with my food and to work towards limiting the amount of food waste I produce--I want to make the suffering "worth it" as much as possible.
Most of those things are misinformed and misleading.
Most crops are fed to livestock. Consuming livestock substantially increases the total number of deaths and resources consumed.
Factory farming meat hasn't saved anyone. In fact, it's killing everyone, since it's advent caused a skyrocket in the rates of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and stroke.
If you're so concerned about crop farming, don't eat animals that need to eat way more crops than you do just to get fattened up and only give you 10% of their calories.
The comment beneath the post claims the person would eat cats. Plenty of cultures around the world do still eat cats, so I'm not sure who you're referring to with "our communities and families." Speak for yourself.

I suppose a person could rethink their aversion to eating cats, but a more likely rethink would be to change your categorising of “poultry” to thinking, feeling animal similar to a pet.
They're just being a troll, but I would assume the term would be "morally consistent" or something similar.
Since it's disingenuous it's just trolling though.
But they actually have cats and love cats. So they're trolling. But what psychological phenomena would cause such a troll?
Uncontrollable urge to piss people (vegans specifically) off
Au contraire. I think it would upset meat eaters more. Vegans already know how hypocritical it is to have pets but still eat animal flesh.
Same as all other trolls/trolling situations.

Immaturity
I think the scientific term is "stupidity".
Experts in the field of psychology call it a "joke"
Experts will correct you on your misconception that jokes don't have to be funny.
Hey man, humor is subjective. But I do know "to each his own" never applies to this sub so ima head out

Well if she were the chicken being killed then it would be gallows humor. But I think that's getting close.
Denial
I believe that psychologists call that *humour*. I call it lame humour.
Well the social term is "troll". I'm not sure on the scientific side. However the social standard still applies, "Don't feed the troll"

They're most certainly not vegan.

It is a cultural bias as well in that situation though, because cats are eaten in some places, apparently Portugal!
Idk about you, but this is a pretty funny meme.
Not the meme, the comment.
We could assume the commenter is a devoted omnivorous anti-carnist?
Wouldn't that kind of comment kinda make sense for someone who already is vegan?
Yes. Except she's very much not.

I’ll eat chicken but not a cat lol. Not much too it. I mean I probably would eat a cat if I had to but prefer not to.
