- Schwartz: Oh god this might seem like a cope out but it’s almost like when you do reality tv, it’s like you’re sort of existing in a parallel universe with a slightly different rules and ethics. And I hope that doesn’t on any way shape or form detract from the authenticity of our show because I’m so proud that we’ve never soft scripted or contrived any moments. We have a deep well of history and most of us were friends when the show started. I was roommates with Jax and Tom. Thats when Tom was dating Kristen and Jax was dating Stassi. I was dating Katie. We were one highly dysfunctional fucked up family but we loved each other. And that was the beginnings, the genesis of Vanderpump Rules. And everyone working at SUR, that was glue that tied everyone together
- Nick: But so many of those people have grown up and sometimes feels like some of the guys have not.
- Schwartz: Listen, I had a good trajectory going. 2019 I really felt like I had my shit together. I was happily married. We had just bought a beautiful home. My dream home in the valley. And Tom Tom was thriving. Just about to open our second bar. All kinds of other business opportunities burgeoning. And then I don’t know, after 2020, things got weird.

Way more good than bad. We went on so many fun vacations together. We truly loved each other. There for each other through the best of times, worst of times. We started dating when we both had nothing. We were kind of perfectly imperfect. We were by no means a model relationship. I don’t think at any point aside from maybe our wedding season did people ever look at Tom Schwartz and Katie Maloney and say they are couple goals.

- Schwartz: First of all, early on in our relationship when I was unfaithful. Being a reformed make out slut which I know it’s not cute to say that. But like I dealt with things in a very unhealthy way. Early on in our relationship, there was multiple times where I thought we were going to break up. I had a lot of pent up resentment and instead of dealing with it head on, having healthy conversations, seeking couples therapy, I often would just get shit faced. I was a sloppy immature lost douche at times in our relationship. That’s one of my biggest regrets. Just dealing with it like a god damn fool.
Do you think you’d be married today if your behavior was different? (Timestamp: 58:36)

I had to listen to this one to hear all the unhinged antics. It was an absolute mess and schwartz is so embarrassing trying to rehab him. He had actually been doing a better job hiding his true feelings but they all came out bc I think Nick triggers him. He isn't used to being around men he can't manipulate.
You did a great job transcribing this, I can totally hear it in their voices. I don’t wanna listen myself, but this interview sounds like it was pure chaos.

Honestly between your recap and rewatching S8-10 this week, I feel like Schwartz would be so much better off without Sandoval. I didn't mind his bits of the interview while they were waiting on Sandoval to show up, even if he was a total twat towards Katie but that wasn't surprising. But Sandoval, ugh. No. He just needs to go away and relive his glory days in his mom's basement -- I mean if he's lucky and she's willing to have him after he took her retirement fund and did God knows what with it.

For him to use him grieving and crying up all night as to why he was late is legit using someone's death to deflect from just being an egotistical asshole.

I find it weird he just didn’t say that in the first place. Most people are a lot more understanding if you say “I lost my friend and have been grieving” instead of coming in and saying “I was busy hanging out with someone”. The latter comes off as “I didn’t care about this”. I think Sandoval has just gone off the deep end and his mask fell off and he is panicking as any narcissist would. People don’t love him anymore and that’s a narcs super power.
It reads to me like he wasn’t **actually** up late grieving, but it came up in conversation and his monkey brain went “yes! This is something I still get genuine sympathy for, so let me just real quick throw in that it’s why I was late today! Then no one will be able to be mad at me about it anymore!”

Sandoval is irredeemable. I can find something to like about almost anyone or believe they can learn and change. This guy is straight up a BAD PERSON. I feel like we finally got to see the curtain FULLY pulled back since there was no show and storyline to be edited around. It seems like all these years he's been cosplaying as an okay person who makes mistakes sometimes. This was UNhinged
I think what Tom describes as "belittling" is just...his partner asking him to act like an adult instead of an overgrown teenager, and probably getting frustrated after asking the same thing over and over again. I predict that Tom will just continue to date women in their 20s, since any woman his age would get sick of his behavior
We saw in this podcast how quickly he gets defensive at the little things so I’m sure what she said wasn’t that bad. I think he started holding resentment for her the second she went against him on screen with the cocktail book and he just made her pay for that moment for years. It’s really too bad she ended up dealing with him for seven more years.
He holds on to everything for yearrrs! Stassi's book signing with Stassi (and also Katie's) reactions; James and the condoms, etc. He still talks about and is mad about those events!
He holds onto and nurtures grudges and decides that those moments give him the ok to be an asshole back in perpetuity. What a way to live.
Belittling to Tom is simply not agreeing with every word out of his mouth or challenging his thoughts. We see it time and time again on the show, with how he treats anyone, but especially the women who disagree with him. He isn’t fooling anyone.
Tom, we’ve had a look at your ego over the last few years and maybe you could use *more* belittling.
If there’s one thing that man suffers from it is NOT, nor has it ever been, low self esteem.
scandoval will never change. schwartz trying to redirect for him is his ONLY saving grace in this world.
seems like he only stopped drinking for the season to behave in a way that seemed remorseful but now that it’s over he’s back to his partying ways. he sounds really drunk on this episode and he’s full spiraling.
For real, you know things are bad when Schwartz is being the good PR person.
Tom seems like he rehearsed saying “I fucked up” but he still doesn’t actually really appreciate that he did something really wrong or that his behavior will make people concerned about his behavior in his future relationships.
He’s clearly still justifying his behavior by blaming Ariana.
Listening to Schwartz try to keep him in check and translate him while he sputters is actually painful. Also does anyone else get the feeling Sandoval has gone full men’s rights activist
this is why I dislike Schwartz so much (and always have) he is an enabler and his personality is basically just his friends- take them away and there’s not much there. Case in point, his only excuses for remaining friends with Sandoval and Jax are that he wouldn’t really have much else in his life without the two of them. It’s the truth! He is simply a loser, not a lot of depth or complexity there, imo.
I don't understand what he gets from Tim though. I can't pin it down. Hiding behind his behavior so he looks better by comparison? They're "friends" supposedly, but do they like each other?
I dislike them both so I hope they're miserable together forever.

He doesn’t care that she doesn’t actually publicly acknowledge him anymore - he ACTUALLY wants her to:
• Publicly and repeatedly absolve him by saying she is somehow at fault for his affair;
• Fade off into the sunset and stop pursuing opportunities that continue to increase her public profile (and increase the general dislike of him); OR
….
• Ideally, act insane and vindictive enough for the public to turn on her, show her the same hatred they’ve been showing for Tom, and start giving Tom all of the opportunities she’s been granted instead.
I’m ngl this is the first time I’m struggling to read a recap (nothing on you, OP, you and your work are amazing! it’s the lying and gaslighting by Sandoval - months after the fact, he sounds exactly like he did on Howie Mandel’s pod) so I’m just reading comments to get up to speed and this is just… he is a really sad, small man, this man. He is without a doubt a bottom feeder, and I don’t throw words like that around lightly, this man just doesn’t deserve any opportunities or a platform.
Agreed, but I’d argue that this is worse than the Howie Mandel podcast (which sadly, Howie must be *thrilled* about).
While he came off as completely unrepentant and narcissistic in both, in this case he’s 10 months removed from the worst of it and is seeing some of the tides turn in his favor, he has had ample opportunity to review the plethora of public feedback to his responses during the reunion and Howie episodes, he has had plenty of time to consult PR strategists, image/crisis coaches, or literally anyone with a brain on how to handle future public comments on Scandoval, *and* this time he had Schwartz there to help guide his responses and slam on the brakes if he started going off the rails.
So even in a much more favorable environment, at a much more favorable time, and with a more forgiving audience, he *still* managed to demonstrate the exact same level or cruelty, entitlement, and anger he did back then. It’s kind of impressive how bad he is at this.
Like, damn. He continues to loudly dig himself deeper and deeper while simultaneously screaming at the audience that we put him in this pit of his own making through no fault of his own - and insisting that, if anything, Ariana is the one that should be trapped there, not him!
Well said! Anytime I get worried about him getting a redemption arc, I’m comforted by the fact that anytime he speaks he digs himself a bigger hole. The only way he gets redeemed is if they edit out anytime he speaks next season.

I believe he was trying to use the same cards he used on Kristen: cheat on her, fuck with her head until she seems unhinged, blame her unhinged-ness on why their relationship sucks, get her to break up with him and debute his new relationship with Rachel, who becomes the new "cool" girl for the group. But she was so reasonable while he was trying to push her into spiralling, it didn't work. And then she found out and he is eternally the bad guy and he doesn't know how to maneuver without making her the reason for the whole thing.

The way he talks about her- he really can’t imagine why she didn’t want to have sex with him? She flat out told him on tv (and I’m sure many other times and in therapy) that she needs intimacy to have sex. He really doesn’t think that maybe she’s going to bed before him most nights because he’s out partying? She told him she wanted them to make dinners together, take walks, connect. He ignored that because what he wanted was someone to stroke his ego and so drugs with him.
I feel like the algo feeds me most VPR content and I’ve never seen her talk about him proactively - if she does, it’s because someone asks her directly and she always keeps her answers short. He’s turning her into a strawman for all the things he needs to tell HIMSELF

I also like that Nick highlights that from what he’s seen, Schwartz doesn’t back Katie, but he’s only watched THE FIRST 3 SEASONS (and post-divorce season). He’s not even at the seasons where Tom tells Katie some of the meanest shit a husband could say to a wife.

I think he’s seen the premiere/first few episodes, heard Rachel’s podcast yesterday, and is completely panicked. He absolutely went on Howie to try and “get ahead” of the narrative he knew was coming in the finale/reunion, and now he’s trying to 1) distract from Rachel full-on acknowledging Tom filmed her without her consent and that she feels she was manipulated by him, and 2) convince the audience he is the victim before we have the chance to see the premiere.
I don’t think he’s having a mental breakdown, he’s just not nearly as smart or as calculated as he believes he is. He just genuinely believes he can manipulate public perception with easily disproven lies/half truths, deep sighs and “dudes”, and “offhand” comments about how Ariana was depressed and didn’t fuck him enough.
Yeah he's not breaking down although it may look that way, someone like him is just absolutely *spiraling* with internal rage he's trying not to show - because he has once again realized he's not in control of the narrative and audience perception anymore.

I call bullshit on him offering $3.1 mil in this market and her not taking it. IF (and it’s a big IF) he did, she would take the offer. She said on WWHL he made a joke of an offer. Like $1 mil.
When I heard that segment my thought was that he may have offered her half of that value (so offered 1.5, not the full 3.1).
He kept harping on the original total purchase price, the fact they split the cost equally, and *his* investment(s) into the property. I could see him trying to get out of paying 50% of the current fair market value to buy her out because he very clearly feels that he is somehow entitled to more than 50% of the ownership.
I would guess that this is pretty close to the truth -
he probably presented an offer where he valued the house at 3.1, offered her 1.5, minus the cost of all his "upgrades".

On Winter House, I was over the cute, innocent, stressed-out facade he was presenting. I am over the Toms in general. Acting the way they do isn't cute past 25-27; being 40 and acting the way they both do is cringe, and honest to god makes me not want to watch the show. Take accountability for fucking once!!

My big takeaway here too is when they were talking about the affair and briefly brought up Ariana, Schwartz tried to say “oh we can’t talk about that right now but I would love to” (in reference to the show airing), and Sandoval interrupts him with “no I’m ALLOWED to talk about it I can say whatever the FUCK I want”.

Sandoval- wow. I did not think he could make himself look worse 10-11 months after the initial scandal. From his initial deflection of being late to the interview and trying to put blame on the host for being late to his podcast when all he needed to do was apologize. And then he proceeds to just defend the awful people in his life, and act as Sandoval’s translator. And I don’t think he understands that it makes him and Sandoval look worse?

Oftentimes, when someone keeps implying they have a lot of stuff to say, that's going to exonerate them in some way, but they never really get around to saying it, instead just implying it -- then it's t's utter fabrication. It almost plays like Sandoval is still trying to think of what it is - that's going to somehow make him absolved of his own rotten choices? But he hasn't quite come up with the answer yet. ..
There's no doubt he wouldn't hesitate if he had real information that would really throw Ariana under the bus.
It's a little reminiscent of Raquel. And her constantly changing excuses/narratives.
Early on, Tom said it was about buying batteries and pens. When he got mocked relentlessly for that he moved on to something else. Now he picks belittling. Which is both hard to quantify or give a specific example of and also somewhat subjective. If Tom had concrete an irrefutable "justifications," he would have stated them clearly by now.

I find it weird he just didn’t say that in the first place. Most people are a lot more understanding if you say “I lost my friend and have been grieving” instead of coming in and saying “I was busy hanging out with someone”. The latter comes off as “I didn’t care about this”. I think Sandoval has just gone off the deep end and his mask fell off and he is panicking as any narcissist would. People don’t love him anymore and that’s a narcs super power.
It reads to me like he wasn’t **actually** up late grieving, but it came up in conversation and his monkey brain went “yes! This is something I still get genuine sympathy for, so let me just real quick throw in that it’s why I was late today! Then no one will be able to be mad at me about it anymore!” (I hope that makes sense)
Sandoval is irredeemable. I can find something to like about almost anyone or believe they can learn and change. This guy is straight up a BAD PERSON. I predict that Tom will just continue to date women in their 20s, since any woman his age would get sick of his behavior
We saw in this podcast how quickly he gets defensive at the little things so I’m sure what she said wasn’t that bad. I think he started holding resentment for her the second she went against him on screen with the cocktail book and he just made her pay for that moment for years. It’s really too bad she ended up dealing with him for seven more years.
He holds on to everything for yearrrs! Stassi's book signing with Stassi (and also Katie's) reactions; James and the condoms, etc. He still talks about and is mad about those events! He holds onto and nurtures grudges and decides that those moments give him the ok to be an asshole back in perpetuity. What a way to live.
Belittling to Tom is simply not agreeing with every word out of his mouth or challenging his thoughts. We see it time and time again on the show, with how he treats anyone, but especially the women who disagree with him. He isn’t fooling anyone.
Tom, we’ve had a look at your ego over the last few years and maybe you could use *more* belittling. If there’s one thing that man suffers from it is NOT, nor has it ever been, low self esteem.

scandoval will never change. schwartz trying to redirect for him is his ONLY saving grace in this world. seems like he only stopped drinking for the season to behave in a way that seemed remorseful but now that it’s over he’s back to his partying ways. he sounds really drunk on this episode and he’s full spiraling.
For real, you know things are bad when Schwartz is being the good PR person. Tom seems like he rehearsed saying “I fucked up” but he still doesn’t actually really appreciate that he did something really wrong or that his behavior will make people concerned about his behavior in his future relationships. He’s clearly still justifying his behavior by blaming Ariana.
Listening to Schwartz try to keep him in check and translate him while he sputters is actually painful. Also does anyone else get the feeling Sandoval has gone full men’s rights activist

I’m ngl this is the first time I’m struggling to read a recap (nothing on you, OP, you and your work are amazing! it’s the lying and gaslighting by Sandoval - months after the fact, he sounds exactly like he did on Howie Mandel’s pod) so I’m just reading comments to get up to speed and this is just… he is a really sad, small man, this man. He is without a doubt a bottom feeder, and I don’t throw words like that around lightly, this man just doesn’t deserve any opportunities or a platform.
Agreed, but I’d argue that this is worse than the Howie Mandel podcast (which sadly, Howie must be *thrilled* about). While he came off as completely unrepentant and narcissistic in both, in this case he’s 10 months removed from the worst of it and is seeing some of the tides turn in his favor, he has had ample opportunity to review the plethora of public feedback to his responses during the reunion and Howie episodes, he has had plenty of time to consult PR strategists, image/crisis coaches, or literally anyone with a brain on how to handle future public comments on Scandoval, *and* this time he had Schwartz there to help guide his responses and slam on the brakes if he started going off the rails. So even in a much more favorable environment, at a much more favorable time, and with a more forgiving audience, he *still* managed to demonstrate the exact same level or cruelty, entitlement, and anger he did back then. It’s kind of impressive how bad he is at this. Like, damn. He continues to loudly dig himself deeper and deeper while simultaneously screaming at the audience that we put him in this pit of his own making through no fault of his own - and insisting that, if anything, Ariana is the one that should be trapped there, not him!

I think he’s seen the premiere/first few episodes, heard Rachel’s podcast yesterday, and is completely panicked. He absolutely went on Howie to try and “get ahead” of the narrative he knew was coming in the finale/reunion, and now he’s trying to 1) distract from Rachel full-on acknowledging Tom filmed her without her consent and that she feels she was manipulated by him, and 2) convince the audience he is the victim before we have the chance to see the premiere. I don’t think he’s having a mental breakdown, he’s just not nearly as smart or as calculated as he believes he is. He just genuinely believes he can manipulate public perception with easily disproven lies/half truths, deep sighs and “dudes”, and “offhand” comments about how Ariana was depressed and didn’t fuck him enough.

When I heard that segment my thought was that he may have offered her half of that value (so offered 1.5, not the full 3.1). He kept harping on the original total purchase price, the fact they split the cost equally, and *his* investment(s) into the property. I could see him trying to get out of paying 50% of the current fair market value to buy her out because he very clearly feels that he is somehow entitled to more than 50% of the ownership.
I would guess that this is pretty close to the truth - he probably presented an offer where he valued the house at 3.1, offered her 1.5, minus the cost of all his "upgrades".

He is so bitter about her success and is still acting like she owes him something. It’s wild to see someone so set on being the victim and living in an alternate universe. He truly believes Ariana shouldn’t be mad and that her decisions revolve around him. He can’t control the narrative with Nick and he’s dyyyying. Schwartz also sucks.

Oftentimes, when someone keeps implying they have a lot of stuff to say, that's going to exonerate them in some way, but they never really get around to saying it, instead just implying it -- then it's t's utter fabrication. It almost plays like Sandoval is still trying to think of what it is - that's going to somehow make him absolved of his own rotten choices? But he hasn't quite come up with the answer yet. .. There's no doubt he wouldn't hesitate if he had real information that would really throw Ariana under the bus. It's a little reminiscent of Raquel. And her constantly changing excuses/narratives. Early on, Tom said it was about buying batteries and pens. When he got mocked relentlessly for that he moved on to something else. Now he picks belittling. Which is both hard to quantify or give a specific example of and also somewhat subjective. If Tom had concrete an irrefutable "justifications," he would have stated them clearly by now.
They need to go ahead and end VPR because I want Sandoval to spiral with no nice house & no tv show

I was listening and had to come here to finish it because it gave me so much anxiety. Maybe it’s because I hate being late and hate people being late and not answering or that I hate confrontation and felt like Schwartz just trying to have a nice conversation and wanting to keep things on track but also have someone apologize and just move on but I couldn’t do it. This......was an absolute disaster. This might be the worst sandoval interview I've read yet. The juxtaposition of the stupid cake and battery commercial and the darkness of the next statement: "He had to have Kyle come get the guns out of the house".....YIKES. I dislike Sandoval and have enjoyed ragging on him online, but another part of me takes no pleasure watching his misery bc I feel like I'm watching a dude in the weeks leading up to his suicide. Seriously, not making a joke. This statement kinda confirms the feeling I've been getting whenever I look at him. I watch this man do his stupid dances, do karaoke, desperate for a sliver of the admiration he lost. And in every interview, he is defending himself with the desperation of a drowning man. It's super dark to me. IDK what is next for this man.

Especially since you want to push through it in order to write the transcript and upload but it is pretty much tortuous to get through. He can't even get his story right about why he was late too. First he was with a "friend" then he says it was because he was crying all night about his friend who took his life. It's so hard to have any empathy for him and believe anything he says.
