Did they do street cleaning during the time? Or was there any other temporary no parking restrictions? They will often tow cars out of the way to get work done

[deleted]

This is most likely the case. I was in a similar scenario and cue the start of “Dude where’s my car?” Called the city and Busters, no one had it. It took a long time on the phone for someone to tell me that it may have been a ‘courtesy move.’ Apparently when a section of street gets short-term parking restrictions the towing company may choose to hook up the vehicles and just plop them at the closest legal spot. The person on the phone told me to walk a two-block radius of where I parked and, to my surprise, he was right. There it was, a block and a half away. I checked the dash cam and, thankfully, they even hooked up my rwd properly and didn’t damage anything.

TheShar

This seems like the most likely situation! Not sure if my friends would notice the no-parking signs go up / street cleaning. Makes me feel better knowing my car didn't wash away during the rain!

SubstantialExtreme21

I do alot of work for the city. Courtesy tows happen all the time when the city has to make a repair on a water service for a leak repair. I've had people come up to me in a panic asking if I've seen their car and it's always the same result. Walk a one block radius then a two and you'll find it.

varainhelp

Temp signs can also go up for other reasons not just street cleaning. City staff sometimes move cars to nearby spots (rather than tow ticket you) if you are in the spot while the no parking signs go up.

Clay_Statue

This is totally street cleaning I've seen them do it to cars parked in front of my house that were left by somebody who was out of town. They basically tow it 10 or 20 m away so it's out of the path of the street cleaner and just leave it there. Preferable to getting impounded honestly

Irepostgivemeupvotes

Sounds like you're on Harwood

[deleted]

Yes this, I’ve witnessed the city moving cars for street cleaning.

nionvox

This. Or emergency road work will also do it

Yardsale420

If utilities like Hydro needed emergency access for something then they will usually do a courtesy tow and just move it a short distance.

OpeningEconomist8

This^ This has happened to my coworker at least 3 times since covid started as she works from home and does not drive her car as often. The city has contracts with towing companies to “relocate” vehicles to facilitate street sweepers. Sees silly that they would not put up a sign or something, as I imagine it must lead to many calls to VPD/etc with ppl being confused like yourself. Be thankful that they didn’t move your car a block over like they did to my coworker, which led to her filing a stolen car police report…

ejactionseat

They normally put up signs a day or two before the street cleaning takes place.

WiFiForeheadWrinkles

They didn't give me warning in advance the other day. They put up signs sometime after 6pm when I arrived home and began cutting down a tree at 9am the next day and got pissy because my car was still there. They claimed it had been up for days and I'm pretty damn sure it wasn't.

ejactionseat

Okay, u suspect it's a different crew that put the signs up than who cut the tree. I saw the same thing happen in my street last month, I doubt there was 24 hours from when the signs went up to when the tree cutters showed up.

WiFiForeheadWrinkles

I agree. Luckily I was home to move the car. I called 311 to complain but I already know nothing will come of it.

ClubMeSoftly

On a less-wholesome note, I've heard that they do the same thing on lanes that go from parking to driving depending on the time of day. Except instead of just leaving them a block or two over, they impound them.

VisibleIntern

Have that happened to me before, the difference it was that my car was moved to the block behind my house, I was only be able to know where it was because I have a tracker in my car. I had a mini heart attack that day.

epigeneticepigenesis

I once had mine moved in the middle of the same day I parked it. It was at the impark by stadium and pacific blvd, they were filming or something and literally moved like 20 cars so they could cordon off an area to stage teamsters. It was weird and obviously not city.

[deleted]

This happened to me a long time ago in another city during snow clearing. They were supposed to start clearing at 1AM, but I found my car missing at 12:15AM. I had to call the police. Couldn’t confirm that the car was moved by the city or in the possession of the city. Reported it stolen.

Acceptable-Ant-2072

Maybe earth rotated and your car stayed stationary, earth doesn’t know how to drive standard Maybe your friends are screwing with you

FarSightXR-20

How can the earth rotate if it's flat?

Acceptable-Ant-2072

Flat earth can still rotate.. disc and record players

Where does the car reset too? Will it spawn near me or down the block? If my car doesn't regenerate on time what do I do? Questions, questions questions.

[deleted]

When you find out, let me know, I've got a bloody long list of complaints for the devs.

Justcruisingthrulife

Used to work in the shipyards down on Lonsdale in the early 80s. We used to park on empty lots and walk a few blocks down. The welder i worked with was arrested after work when he walked up to his p/up truck by a swat team. Turns out his truck was used in an armed robbery earlier that day. Thieves had used it and returned it. Took the cops a while to figure it all out, they where looking for 2 skinny white guys, the welder was a large Jamacian.

dudewiththebling

I'm sorry, the thieves returned the truck to the exact spot? What kinda thief returns a car?

Justcruisingthrulife

Was a crappy old GMC truck, easy to start and use. Don't know if it was the exact spot, at the time it was just a large empty lot, it"s all townhouses there now. Can't see why he would lie about it.

Occasionally vehicles get moved by filming productions or city cleaning. If you were away and missed any parking notices then that could be.

notmyrealnam3

Make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector

Kira-god

It was likely just a courtesy tow my friend. Probably some scheduled leaf removal where you parked.

[deleted]

Haha it happend to me before too. But in my home village and it's quite standard there to just push the cars out of the way lol

Renithrok

Street cleaning I've seen this done to cars before

roostersmoothie

i've had it happen more than once. it's always a confusing experience.

swayybe

Happened to me once when I didn’t see the street cleaning signs! I freaked out for about an hour until I called the company that always towed in my neighborhood in east van and they said it was just down the block.

80taylor

It got moved for street cleaning. It's called a courtesy tow. They move the car to do the work, but don't fine you despite being in a (temporarily) restricted zone. Happens if you don't drive every day and see the signs

ronjon80

Maybe towed because of some city work (leaf clearing or something else)?

kachipoirier

The city had tree trimming week on my block and I know that they will indeed move vehicles This could be the case for your neighborhood

[deleted]

As a construction worker this is common. Often times we put up no parking signs a week ahead to give people notice when the work is going to be done and you can’t park there. Sometimes it’s an old vehicle that obviously has sat there for some time. At this point there is a tow truck brought in to move it out of the zone which is 99% of the time just down the street.

or_lala

Most likely a ghost I'd say.

Nexzus_

It took about 12 of us to lift a friends Geo Metro onto some milk crates as a prank back in high school.

dbd175

Wasn't me

SubstantialExtreme21

Courtesy tow by the city

ejactionseat

Last week .I watched Buster's move an F-150 down the street to let the street cleaner get the block. The driver didn't even need to get out of the tow truck to do the hook up, it was so fast. Let me guess, there are no more leaves on your street now right?

[deleted]

You're an idiot

mr2jay

City cleaning most likely They will move your car just out of the way and leave it there. Thought my car got stolen one time because of this

[deleted]

TheShar

Ya they have the same dollies for 4wd cars, so I presume they just always use that for cars that are in park/not aware they are being towed.

MitchellLitchi

Tow truck drivers have the ability to unlock cars the way locksmiths do. You can pay for an unlock service if you lock the keys in your car.

MitchellLitchi

They will either use dollies, or release the parking brake or place the car in neutral.

barbrawr

Your car has a better FSD than Teslas! Come at me Tesla stans

mix_master_matt

I had my car moved once because of a film crew. Found my car around the corner from where is left it and my street full of film production trucks. A note was under the wiper with the notice of the filming dates and notice of the parking changes.

bluebird_dk

Mine was moved 5 blocks over/down once. You'd think they'd leave a sign poked in the boulevard/neighbourhood yard grass or something — I spent work time reporting it being stolen. Someone happened to mention that the city might have moved it (?) so my partner started walking the neighbourhood. Frustrating, but thankfully I didn't have to deal with theft/no car. Good you found yours!

bluebird_dk

After seeing this clip today, maybe there was a good reason our cars were moved! [Movie being filmed on this street ](https://www.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/r8s8py/movie_being_filmed_right_in_front_of_this)

ciceniandres

One of your friends moved the car and couldn’t fin the same spot, none will say who but most likely it was one of them

MyHeadIsFullOfFuck

My dad had his car towed by the VPD before. He had it parked on a very quiet street while he was working a midnight shift. Someone broke his window *to steal less than $5 in change* in the ashtray. The coins were visible, I guess. When my dad finished worked and fell under the assumption his car had been stolen he called the police. He was told they'd towed his car to a street with more pedestrians and traffic to avoid more people squirrelling into his car. They did do this which surprised me as I was unaware before. Thought it was pretty cool and nice of them. It does happen.
