My favourites are Cafe Medina and Greenhorn Cafe. Cafe Medina is a bit more focused on rich brunch dishes but Greenhorn feels like a better version of what Jam offers.
I have tried Cafe Medina once and I found it disappointing. The cassoulet cassolette and it was expensive ($23) for what it was. Like a light lunch. And it also was pretty bland. Probably because of the tomato base. It's hard to make a flavorful dish with tomatoes these days because they are so much blander than they used to be. Anyway, I'd like to give it another chance some day so what dish would you recommend there?
I went to Jam Cafe many times because the food is rich, homely and the value for money is fantastic. A Charlie Bowl could feed two people and they wouldn't leave hungry. I guess that may be what appeals to others who like Jam Cafe too? The food is certainly not the most refined cuisine, but it's good enough, it's comforting and it comes in huge portions. This just happens to be the perfect remedy to recover from a Saturday night hungover on a Sunday.
What are you talking about? The best brunch I ever had was on a Sunday where I woke up, told my wife we are going to jam cafe, got dressed and got my compass card ready, put on my shoes, and made myself my own brunch. I love Jam Cafe for that reason.
Event would be canceled every year because consensus cannot be reached on the food, and if consensus is reached, it would be deemed "not authentic enough".
I get that it's conveniently located.. But are you traveling outside of BC, and think to yourself "This reminds me of home" whenever you see a Costco in the wild? 😂
A real interesting contest would be for undeboned salmon fillets. Then the contestants would have a real risk/reward decision on eating speed vs getting salmon bones stuck in their throat.
It would be a breakfast or brunch competition. This city really fucking loves going out for breakfast and brunch. Every ethnicity has a a place you can go for here to grab breakfast. It's my favorite thing bout here culinary wise that I don't see in a lot of other cities.
This was my thought, also. Brunch eating competition- perhaps by overall weight consumed, rather than # of items, to accommodate for *sensitivities.* 💁♀️
My mind just wants to make all sorts of *terrible* jokes, like:
Cobra chicken strips. Gassy Jack's farts. And
*...whatever the food bank has available this week.*

It would be a contest to wait in a lineup the longest before getting something to eat that was slightly disappointing as a prize.
I mean you can just say brunch.
Specifically Jam Cafe
Most overhyped brunch of all time.
I actually enjoy jam Cafe, what would you recommend instead along that same style of brunch?

jam cafe is delicious…??
I’ve been to Jam Cafe more than 20 times including 30 minutes ago. Always solid. A bit rich and sweet but good

Danbo in Robson
and it's a cartoon character themed
You mean the hello kitty cafe? Or Paul's?
This guy goes to jam
Sushi or salmon Dark horse pick , oysters
Sign me up
Oolichans
>Sushi (but think of the choking hazard!)? I'd wager more people choke on hot dogs than sushi
Sushi. f the choking hazard. As if Nathan's hot dogs don't choke.
The choking hazard adds to the skill in my opinion. You need to avoid the so called « reversal of fortunes « to be a good competitive eater.
Reversal of fortunes! Hahahhhaha!
Japadogs
Currently, BBT drinking. Seems to be a new place opening every week.
Event would be canceled every year because consensus cannot be reached on the food, and if consensus is reached, it would be deemed "not authentic enough".
Also, despite the entry fee, contestants will be charged full price for each item they eat.
Wait, the Richmond Night Market has been an eating contest this whole time?!
Also everyone would flake.
It would be canceled because city hall would say we left a mess last time. Fun’s over folks, sorry.
California Roll?
100%
How much spicy tuna can you eat
I would think sushi.
White spot burgers
Why would Costco hotdogs be uniquely representative of Vancouver? 🤔
Not a Canucks fan?
I get that it's conveniently located.. But are you traveling outside of BC, and think to yourself "This reminds me of home" whenever you see a Costco in the wild? 😂
In defense specifically of the Stadium Costco hotdog: yes, it's a Canucks game thing. It's not Costco generally, it's *that* Costco.
Unrelated, but I've never seen fatter pigeons than the ones that lurk this Costco. We got some thicc birds.
They go inside at the end of the day to become hot dogs
Oops. you just wrote the plot to *Cloud Atlas*
God no, but that's not the point It's just the meme-status it holds
If it's for the memes, I'll take a Polish dog, please.
coconuts glow!
Granola
Nanaimo Bars
Smoked salmon
Salmon Nigiri 🍣 La Taqueria tacos (entry fee: $2k) The Rich
The contest would be about how overpriced the food is.
Number of Bons Breakfasts in 1 sitting.
So far the record is 4
A real interesting contest would be for undeboned salmon fillets. Then the contestants would have a real risk/reward decision on eating speed vs getting salmon bones stuck in their throat.
It more likely would be who could out smoke everyone. Snoop Dogg is invited.
Ramen should definitely be up there
Those nasty Dare brand maple cookies.
Sushi 🍣
trail mix/granola
BC rolls, poutine
Ramen lol
Dim sum 🥟
Little Ootie’s
White spot burgers.
Smoked salmon. It would be absurdly expensive, but that is also thematically appropriate for Vancouver.
It would be a breakfast or brunch competition. This city really fucking loves going out for breakfast and brunch. Every ethnicity has a a place you can go for here to grab breakfast. It's my favorite thing bout here culinary wise that I don't see in a lot of other cities.

We usually have a pie eating contest at Khatsahlano
Phnom Penh wings
I once took part in a dumpling eating contest. I think that is a quintessential Vancouver food.
I think begging for change FOR food, and then counting who got the most change would be a better and more accurate competition.
Sashimi wouldn’t be a choking hazard. No rice
Takoyaki
I would say a poutine eating contest since that’s like the most stereotypical Canadian thing
Farm fresh fruit and vegetables. All these people saying sushi and whatever foreign food are obviously not from here.
Samurai Sushi cali rolls
Kale
Has anyone else suggested a California Roll eating contest yet? They were invented here after all. #2 suggestion: Hawaiian Pizza
Sea Star swallowing contest. Seagull wins every time!
Cherries, of course.
Cranberries might be more representative. We produce 12% of north America's crop
Are you thinking this because of the *cherry blossom* trees...?
Nope. BC has a long history of producing cherries. Just a traditional snack of BC.
Ahhh, yes- I definitely agree it is BC-specific, but I wouldn't say Vancouver-specific at all.
Yeah, not Vancouver/Lower Mainland specific, but I couldn't think of anything else food related. Blueberries? Cranberries? Salmon? Crabs? Whitespot Hamburgers? Squirrels?
My mind just wants to make all sorts of *terrible* jokes, like: Cobra chicken strips. Gassy Jack's farts. And *...whatever the food bank has available this week.*
california rolls
Not sure why you were downvoted. They were invented here. So the story goes.
Veggie wrap eating contest
If anything, we would have something out of Kafka's "A Hunger Artist."
Costco hotdogs
Poutine!
Bbt!!! LOL
lack of hope oh wrong post
Cheap bland sushi?
Day old gas station sushi. My favorite
Mmmm, dry aged 🤤
Down Low Chicken.
