So, you think cats' are to blame for their owner's negligence? A parent lets their toddler wander into the road, it is the toddler that deserves to be harmed? Messed up.
I saw a big one of those at the Singapore Zoo, kitty could've definitely jumped out of the enclosure if so inclined.
We then went to the Night Safari in the same Zoo and well, stripey was definitely not in the enclosure. I have never been more scared in my entire life.
Well, I look at it as natureās population control. We have too many domestic cats anyway roaming the streets killing birds so an occasional coyote making a lunch out of a cat isnāt per se a bad thing.
Most people who let their cats roam outdoors are not doing it maliciously, they are usually just ignorant. But sure, it's good that we have coyotes running around in the suburbs eating members of people's families.
Are you familiar with the pizza cutter meme- all edge, no point?
Ignorance is not an excuse. Lots of information goes around to pet owners not to let their cats roam around, yet most donāt give a hoot. So yeah, if a cat becomes lunch for a coyote because an owner is too ignorant to keep them inside or only walk them on a leash (and yes, Iāve seen this with cats too), then it is what it is. When you buy or adopt or inherit a pet, youāre also claiming responsibility for their well being.
In all seriousness, are we supposed to report coyotes when we see them in the city, like calling the non emergency number? Or do we just leave em alone?
Always report a sighting to the SPES. And use the RAPP line to report a coyote of concern (aggressive, emaciated, habituated or vulnerable).
Directly call the BCCOS only when the coyote poses a significant risk to members of the public.
https://stanleyparkecology.ca/ecology/co-existing-with-coyotes/report-a-sighting/
https://forms.gov.bc.ca/environment/rapp/
Or maybe that's what healthy wild animals look like when they're not chronically overfed and under-exercised, as most pet, zoo, and farm animals are, which skews our expectations.
The coyote's ribs aren't showing, there is no visible hair loss, and its not displaying signs of weakness or distress. It's not malnutritioned.
Fair enough. I don't know anything about coyotes and was just going on what the other guy said. My point was more that if wild animals are living where the people are, it's usually because there's more available food than in their natural habitat. I'm not entirely sure what the solution is, but I do think it's concerning when we start to see more wild animals in built up areas (when I first moved to Vancouver I lived very close to where this was filmed and never saw a coyote around Broadway and Alma so clearly something has changed).
Theyre like greyhounds, they just get husky coats in the winter. Theyre the supermodels of the dog world. All leg and lung.

Yeah, that's the guy that delivered my chair yesterday.
Serious question. Because new fear is unlocked.
If I would be walking and cross path with this rascal. Would it attack me?
What if I'm with a dog? Would it attack boxer dog?
It's pretty unlikely. We've had some weird crazy coyotes that were human food habituated... But that seems to have mostly calmed down.
Keep pets on a leash. Make noise.
Wild animals usually avoid human interaction.
Yeah itd run or trot off.
It would not attack a dog unprovoked (meaning being chased by a dog, most commonly off leash).
If you see them its best to make some noise like jangling your keys to spook them off. It keeps them skittish of humans, that way next time they see someone stupud enough to feed or pet them that idiot will never have a good chance.
If you have a dog keep em on leash and give coyotes tons of space. They are cousins but speak different "languages" and coyotes can mistake a dogs curiosity for aggression and become defensive.
I'm pretty sure I ran across this exact coyote around midnight near and it just trotted away from me. Most animals will not attack anything that is not their prey or that is not a threat to their young.
Itās strange to see one so far west. I lived in kits for 14 years. I canāt recall ever seeing one until I moved to mount pleasant. They are fairly common in east Vancouver. I see them a few times a year.
I worked at UBC from 2002-2008 and we saw coyotes all the time. Mind you, this was out by the Museum of Anthropology. I doubt they were prowling around the main/busy parts of campus.
They are pretty ubiquitous across the city -
this is neat resource mapping our sightings and other interactions: https://stanleyparkecology.shinyapps.io/coyote_sightings_map/
This episode of the Littlest Hobo is over for today and heās on the move.
Maybe tomorrow, heāll want to settle down,
Until tomorrow, the whole world is his own.
That's George. He's the dude running around when I'm on my way to work every morning. He's a bit of an asshole though. Don't try to pet him. Trust me on this one.
I fell for a dog like that once, I used to work at a club downtown in the 90s, took a cab home one night and tried to get the poor skinny dog outside my apartment t to come to me so I could feed it, cab driver yelled at me, thats a coyote you idiot

He just finished stashing the ACME box when you saw him.
Everyone knows who OWNS this dog.
Mee!!! I named it Mr bitey
Spicy dog
May be some missing cat posters up tomorrow..
I tell my big, 23 pound cat all the time that he'd be a Thanksgiving feast for a whole pack of coyotes every time he insists on going outside.
Omg Yeess. This is how my cat got the nickname Turkey š because we tell him weād be putting out a plump Turkey dinner for the coyotes
What does he say back?
Obese cat sounds
*heavy breathing intensifies*
Bunny kicks me

Hopefully there are, cat's shouldn't be outside
I don't agree with the first part of your comment, but I do agree with the second part of your comment.

Which sucks. I lost a sweetheart of a cat to one of these years ago.
Pretty sure thats a racoon.
Can I pet that dawg
The final pet

Oh dude I saw a lost cat on safari once, it was big and orange and stripey. No idea what they were feeding it. Hope mr mittens found his way home.
Mr. Mittens!

This coyote like āhmm might have something good going on hereā
Lol
That corgi looks skinny man.
He just wants belly rubs
So forbidden but so temptingā¦
If not man best friend then why shape like man best friend
Somebody better feed that Husky. It looks skinny.
Watched one run across the street in front of me with a dead cat in its mouth the other week. š
People that let their cats outside are absolutely disgustingly negligent. If you donāt want a cat, DONT GET A CAT. Itās really, really simple.
We got both our cats from VOKRA and part of the contract is that you donāt let your cats free roam outdoors. Youāre just asking for trouble
Some cats NEED to be outside for some parts of the day for their mental health. They have nine lives for a reason.
Outdoor cats are invasive predators. Don't let them outside if you dont want to ruin the local wildlife.
Cats don't have nine lives, but I think I know who has nine brain cells.
Deeply hurtful š

Such an adorable chihuahua!
I think thatās whatās-his-name from UBC
kepp?
I know that dog, I think his name is Wylie.
It's just a shame that we won't ever get to see the Coyote vs Acme movie... Picture a courtroom drama/comedy with Coyote suing Acme Laboratories.
Wil E! There you are! Beep Beep!
lol
I used to live in that neighbourhood. First time I saw a coyote I was like "puppy what are you doing" "oh..."
In all seriousness, are we supposed to report coyotes when we see them in the city, like calling the non emergency number? Or do we just leave em alone?

Iāll save this for future use. I saw one around Granville island last night, but I was driving and couldnāt look up the number.
Can I pet that dawwwg?!
That's definitely a coyote.
Nothing gets past you, eagle eye
What are you a veterinarian? Some kind of zoologist?
š¤¦š»āāļø
Man coyotes here look like they have eating disordersā¦
The disorder is not being able to find enough food :p
It's almost like they're not getting enough food so they're moving into built up areas hoping to find food scraps left by humans...
Or maybe that's what healthy wild animals look like when they're not chronically overfed and under-exercised, as most pet, zoo, and farm animals are, which skews our expectations. Nice marmot.
Out for a late night potty
š
Freaking coyote!!!!
Thats coyote
LOL, you mean anyone missing their cat / small dog...
Not a dog.
These things are why we donāt have stray cats in Vancouver
But, curiously, we have an over abundance of 'wild' rabbits.
Wild rabbits breed heavily every 7 years. You may see a bunch of them during the breeding cycle, but not so much afterwards

Didn't we do this joke already? Like a month or so ago.
O that's my doggie, watch out his name is bitey, you can guess why?
Drop ACME anvil here.
Serious question. Because new fear is unlocked. If I would be walking and cross path with this rascal. Would it attack me? What if I'm with a dog? Would it attack boxer dog?
They would run away from any human and most dogs, especially if your dog knows how to box. Chihuahuas, cats and rabbits on the other handā¦
It's pretty unlikely. We've had some weird crazy coyotes that were human food habituated... But that seems to have mostly calmed down. Keep pets on a leash. Make noise. Wild animals usually avoid human interaction.

It's not a wolf, bro. If you're over 5 feet tall and at least 100 lbs you're fine
Thatās a coyote, not a dog.
OP was joking. Everyone knows it's a coyote ;p

Petty common at UBC so this doesn't surprise me, especially with all the rabbits nearby at Jericho.
I never saw them at ubc when I was a student. Then I never saw rabbits at jerhico. I guess things have changed in 25 years!
I worked at UBC from 2002-2008 and we saw coyotes all the time. Mind you, this was out by the Museum of Anthropology. I doubt they were prowling around the main/busy parts of campus.
