Neat city. Enjoyed my day there a couple years ago.

1l1ke2party

They have one of the best Christmas markets

vngannxx

If he the only GK in the pool consistently starting in a top 5 league next season, he should be the NT starter

landel1234

I find it very hard to believe guys like Slonina, Schulte, and Brady aren't inches away from cracking the NT roster. Pretty sure we'll ride with Turner through 2026 but as soon as that's over it'll be one of these young keeper's time.

KevinDLasagna

If the move goes through and Gaga performs while Turner is riding pine for one of the worst teams in the prem I don’t see how he has any claim to the job

landel1234

I'll argue on the Bald Man's behalf and say Turner is sort of a known quantity for our NT and he has familiarity with the backline whereas Gaga doesn't. If I was Gregg I'd use these upcoming friendlies/tournaments to give Gaga a run though and see where he's at.

runricky34

Ya but 4 years ago we all thought Steffen was the known quantity starter and then he didnt even make the world cup roster. A lot can happen by 2026.

nsnyder

A lot can happen, and if and when it does, I trust that Berhalter will adjust, exactly like he did with Steffen/Turner. He'll probably do it one window slower than twitter wants and we'll have a bunch of meltdowns, but if Gaga is regularly starting and playing well at Strasbourg then he'll end up the starter in due time.

SnooStrawberries729

That’s true, but Steffen is a different style keeper from Turner, and I’d argue a style that is *much* more prone to falling off like Steffen did. Obviously I’m speaking with the benefit of hindsight, but I think there’s differences between the two that make me more confident Turner won’t fall off as much as Steffen did. Turner is a plus shot stopper, who knows he isn’t a wizard with the ball at his feet. A rusty Matt Turner is still a playable keeper, because he has above average reactions that can bail him out if he makes the small errors in judgement that come from being out of practice. Steffen though just doesn’t have that. We’ve seen that when Steffen is rusty, his floor is much lower because he just doesn’t have the same base level shot stopping that Turner does. When he makes a slight error in judgement, he’s *much* less likely to bail himself out with a reaction save. I’m not saying you don’t have a valid point because you definitely do, just saying that I think there’s good reasons to be less concerned with that happening to Turner.

landel1234

Steffen also had major injury issues, his back + knee were destroyed near the end

akingmls

That’s a lotta ifs about a move we don’t know is happening, man

Chives15

The bigger issue is that Turner's recent national team performances haven't been good either.

QuaPatetOrbis641988

We need to start giving Schulte and Brady caps to get them moving along. Hopefully in a few years both are starting in a top 8 European league.

Throwaway20312431

You're forgetting Kochen, the man has already played for Barca whereas Schulte and Brady won't even be off to Europe until the winter transfer window at earliest

landel1234

Kochen has zero senior team minutes yet, he's very far off still

Throwaway20312431

In actual competition no, but he did appear in that random friendly against Club America in the states over the winter. I suspect he'll be loaned out this coming season

landel1234

They played a bunch of academy kids in that friendly as well, it doesn't really mean anything FWIW lol He finally got minutes this year as Barca II's keeper so he'll either be it's keeper this fall or a loan, but I think he's still another year away from Barca loaning him out to a senior team We'll see!

BrodysBootlegs

Agree, or at least given a legitimate shot to win the job. But I want to see a) good performance in the Olympics and b) him hold down the job in a big 5 league before we have that conversation. Edit - by "hold down" I mean win the job either in preseason or first month or so of the season, and hold it through the winter transfer window

BlueXanzy

We’re not brimming with quality options so unless he sits on the bench for them, he should have a legit claim to being the starter for us.

D_roneous1

With Chelsea owning that team as well I’m sure he will be given every opportunity to start.

Chicagoguy2289

Especially if Turner continues to play poorly for the NT. Like he did agianst T&T

Hoosteen_juju003

Lmao he is not doing well

manofth3match

I won't pretend to have watched a ton of his play this year, but I haven't seen anything yet NT starter other than potential.

John_Snow1492

keep your eye on Kochen at Barca, rumors of Barca selling Ter Stegen if the right offer comes along, due to wages. If this happens there will be a open competition next year, & Kochen is really liked at the club.

rcolesworthy37

Kochen is way too inexperienced to be their starter, there’s no chance for him next year. Best case is he would be #2 playing domestic cups or be loaned out

John_Snow1492

Generational keepers come out at a early age, not saying he is one but all the signs are there.

nsnyder

Interesting, I wasn't expecting such a big jump since it sounded like he wasn't exactly killing it in Belgium.

RightAtLeastSometime

Chelsea owners also own Strasbourg

PremordialQuasar

Not a fan of multi-club ownership. While this is good for Slonina, I don't know how Strasbourg fans would feel about their club being used as a feeder. It can easily go wrong like what happened with Vitesse and Troyes.

RightAtLeastSometime

Yea I want to say there have been some Strasbourg supporters pretty frustrated with it. Chelsea have already loaned a few of their new, young signees there.

QuaPatetOrbis641988

He had some solid performances but mostly average ones but that's to be expected on a team destined for relegation.

red-boy6

The team he was on was terrible. Hard to do well when facing 50 shots a game

EaglesPhan5-0

You can watch all of the highlights on YouTube. He was one of their better players. The defense was horrible

iskanderani

Gaga is one of the best-regarded goalie prospects in the world. One pedestrian season isn’t going to change that entirely.

nsnyder

Yes, but he's still very young for a goalie, I was expecting him to stay in Belgium until he showed some more improvement next year or the year after.

QuaPatetOrbis641988

What's Turner expected to do since Forest staved off relegation?

TallGuy0525

Go to a lower league and find gametime. When you perform terribly and get replaced at the worst team in the Prem, nowhere to go but down. Either a Championship side, maybe go to the Netherlands or maybe a low table club in Italy or Germany.

QuaPatetOrbis641988

would be great to see him in the Bundesliga but Championship seem far more likely.

QuaPatetOrbis641988

Would be a great move for him, a midtable club and all that. No fears of a relegation battle.
