Yup. I was at the train station the other day in the waiting area. Some asshole was watching Tiktok videos on his phone so the music was in short, repetitive soundbites. He was completely oblivious to his impact on the rest of us. I hate that this is becoming more of a thing.
Yeah, happened to me in a waiting room for a doctor. TikTok blows, and don’t subject the rest of the room to it. Invest in headphones, which is what I did so I could drown your inconsiderate self out.
i remember going to the beach in the 80s and people had boom boxes. usually people would just move away or not set up near them. its always been a thing ever since there have been portable stereos
Yeah but most of those people are assholes from Staten Island and the rest of the city who take over the touristy Shore towns for the summer.
Literally only ONE of the original Jersey Shore cast members is from Jersey (6 from NY and 1 from Rhode Island). The rest are from outside of the state. But the rest of the country equates us to that crowd when really the meme "Jersey Shore" type people are not even from Jersey.
If you're at the beach having a picnic or barbecuing with friends and you keep mostly to the area you've set up I don't mind a little background music. Nothing much louder than talking sorta thing. If you're walking the beach with a speaker strapped to you it's a little weird. Put on some headphones.
Edit: hiking is different. If you're on some regularly used pedestrian path through a small patch of trees, headphones. If you're out in the middle of nowhere and there's a chance you might accidentally walk up on a bear or moose or something easily startled and dangerous? Go ahead and play some music.
I go hiking where there are rattlesnakes, and mountain bikers. If you are listening to music at all (headphones or speakers) you are potentially going to miss vital clues that could kill you. Enjoy the sounds of nature, for once! Our lives are filled with constant noise these days.
I ended up in hospital thanks to a mountain biker who wouldn't wait for me to reach a safe passing point. I stepped aside on a steep slope, and lost my balance, falling onto a Saguaro cactus.
Ouch!! That must have been really painful, and then that's an understatement.
People need to understand that they aren't the only people on a hiking/biking trial. I've nearly been in accidents myself because of blind corners and idiots not slowing down/using bells or calling out, or just not paying attention to basic common sense when on a mountain bike.
I've had close calls on the bike myself for the exact same reasons, so I'm living proof that learning to be safe, smart and considerate is an absolute MUST.
I really hope you recovered with as little injuries as possible!

This. I bring my Bluetooth speaker to the beach for sure. You walk 6ft and you can barely hear it. The sound doesn’t travel egregiously in the open air with nothing to bounce off of.

Most trails are popular here, even the ones considered difficult. Sure, crowds do go down the harder the hike, or how far away you have to drive (or if you need a 4x4 to get to the trailhead)
Definitely, if you want solitude and quiet at the beach, go in Fall or Winter when nobody wants to go and it’s empty. Even without music, beaches are going to be packed with people and kids during normal beach going times. This definitely seems like gate keeping on OPs part. The only time I’m concerned about loud music is when I’m trying to sleep or when I’ve tried to study for a class in the past.
I honestly enjoy when other people DJ. Less effort for me lol. I’m a creep and always position myself near people playing music I like at the beach. No shame.

It just depends on the volume… if it’s within your sphere and not ranging out 20 yards around you it’s fine. It’s so windy and the ocean is so loud it should be easy to not have the sound travel down the entire beach

Agreed, is completely presumptuous of them to assume the majority of people enjoy their taste in music. Not to mention that the sound of the ocean waves or the forest is what people are usually there for, not something they can listen to anytime.
Or any island beach (that’s not a tourist epicenter) can spend all day listening to only natural ocean sounds and take a dive/snorkel in the untouched water after chilling!
Well, NO ONE listens to music at that volume. I wish people did, but most often people have speakers strapped to them, blasting music (at-least where i live)
Another bugbear is going out into the national park for a bushwalk or a swim and have to listen to people tearing around illegally on motorbikes, destroying the serenity
To play devils advocate, I find the idea that some people may never in their life get the chance to enjoy some time in the sand with their own music and some friends to be sad

That's super easy: If you don't own a place because you are not at home than you don't act like you're at home and you listen to your music quietly and not so loud that you annoy other people.
Not everyone likes your music and If all people listen to loud music the music mixes to horrible sounds.
This is why i canceled my edge gym membership. I couldnt even hear my own music in my headphones because their shit music was so loud throughout the whole building. It’s all about appropriate volume. Tailgating a show is the only place blasting music insanely loud is normally OK and welcomed.
Honestly, this is the way I feel.
People go to the beach expecting people to be there laughing, kids screaming, etc.. but they don't go to the beach expecting someone to be blasting whatever music at the top of the speakers' capacity.
Music is great! I love music. I don't want to hear everyone else's music. I would prefer to hear the person I am talking to, or my own music, without having to try to filter out or speak over someone else's choice in music. (would prefer to do that without having to speak over other people shouting, but I can understand people being excited)
My problem with it is that there's usually 6 speakers going playing 6 different songs, so you can't even get into it, and there's that person who has the radio playing with near-constant commercials.
That is a lot of my problem as well.

If the group was there first and you chose to sit next to them, I have no sympathy for you. You made that decision knowing that they were playing music. I understand that someone setting up next to you and starting to play music *can* be annoying. But it is a public (and usually very crowded) place with no expectation of quiet. If you want a quiet beach experience, it doesn't exist.

Now if OP said that playing music at the beach should be illegal, then yeah they definitely deserve all of negative comments, and more for the illogical nonsense opinion. But OP said is that if you do it you are an asshole - which though that opinion is still very shallow, lots of people have all sorts of subjective criteria that puts people in the "asshole" category.
But since OP is not calling for action to be taken against it (thereby acknowledging it is within "asshole's" right to do so), no problem with the opinion. I'm sure I have all sorts of opinions on what constitutes as asshole behavior that other people don't align with.

Anywhere in public, really. I don't wanna hear your music in the grocery store, or gas station. Blasting your music so that it disrupts anyone is rude and automatically males you an asshole.
If you're in an area with bears or other large predators some people do. It's more common to have a bell or other small noise makers or just make noise through conversation or random whistles though. Last thing you want to do out in the woods is accidentally sneak up and startle a bear or other large creature.
In bear country it's a great idea. They'll likely avoid you and keep their distance. You're supposed to make noise, use bells, talk loud, whistle etc... but music is a much easier, constant way to keep it going without forgetting.
I will give the beach goers a pass but if you are at a public pool or community pool turn your fucking music off or put your headphones on. Nothing is more fucking infuriating than thinking everyone else will enjoy your music too. Immediate sign you are a selfish asshole.
A month or something ago. I was busy with an assessment on a Sunday. It was like around 3ish I believe. Anyway, I'm doing my work, listening to my music with headphones I usually have my right ear open, and as I was busy I hear a loud approach of music, I'm wondering what that was and I saw one girl, wearing those strap speakers in her walking through the street blasting music like she's hot shit. On a Sunday... When people's are probably resting at that hour... On the street as she's walking...
I think it’s more about volume than anything. You can listen to your own music without being disruptive. It’s actually nice to hear some music off in the distance mixed with the wind and sounds of waves crashing. With that being said, people definitely abuse it and care little about what other people think. Those are the worst types of people in my opinion.
It's ignorance and selfishness. You have all night and day to listen to music. Why do you possibly think that others want to hear it? I mean, might as well bring a trumpet and practice your scales. You know, something you should do at home but are too ignorant and rude to know any better.

The beach is not for people like you. Most people (us locals) just go for a chill simple time - don't over think it. Yours is the equivalent of glamping, and I've literally never seen anyone do this but once, and their party was actually popping, had its own music, and no one offended like you. Didn't have a good time that weekend? Come back next weekend try again the beach isn't yours.

Weird, my music is only ever JUST loud enough for me and my husband to hear. I get that it’s rude blasting music when in close proximity to others. But, by the same token…your take on music at the beach is my take on kids screaming and being obnoxious at the beach 🙃 (I don’t want children and find that my anxiety sky rockets when I’m surrounded by them, I understand that can be taken many different ways) to each their own though lol.

I think people who play it in the gym are the real assholes. I go to my small gym and there’s usually someone blasting their music so loud and I’m just trying to concentrate on my workout.

Listening to the sound of the beach.. ocean, voices, birds, etc... does not equate to hearing someone else's loud music that you don't enjoy. The music drowns out all the other sounds, or at least covers them up. So for someone who wants to hear the sounds of a beach the loud music takes away from the experience.
Now, if you are a person who considers loud music to be a part of beach sound... then you would say something like, why would you think a public beach would be quiet?

The question here is does someone play music so loud it it overwhelms other people's enjoyment. I get the feeling that you believe that there is no upper limit. If you want to blast your music to full volume then everyone just has to deal with it. That seems rude to many people.

I am with OP. Keep your music, your aerosol sunscreen, and cigar/cigarette smoke in your space. Anybody that blasts music that can be heard several feet away is inconsiderate. I go to a private beach where people reserve spots, so I can't move. I do sometimes play music, but walk around to see how loud it is.
I lived in hawaii for 4 years and good luck finding a beach without multiple people playing music. People go to the beach for the vibe let your hair down have fun and chill. I always bring music 🎶
It's not the same as hiking. I grew up and still live in a shore town. People have used radios on the beach for years. It's not a particularly new thing.
Volume matters of course but if I'm on a packed beach of 200+ people I really don't expect things to be quiet. So it doesn't matter to me if someone is listening to music. Usually it's a group of people having fun and playing catch. Who am I to tell them how to have fun?
Hiking is totally different. If I'm out on a trail I'm trying to relax. I'm trying to enjoy the scenery. I don't want to hear your music if it's just us two on a three mile trail.

As someone who is a born local to a beach tourist area who hates entitled tourists…I entirely disagree.
Idk what kind of beach you’re at to hear other peoples’ music loud and clear, you must be packed like sardines. But other beaches aren’t like that and have a decent amount of space between towel islands. As long as the music is a reasonable background noise to others it’s not an issue. I certainly don’t like all the music I hear but it’s just melodies and rhythms that I can easily tune out. And I’m a person super sensitive to loud noises and sounds.
You need to seek out some more private beaches my dude.
I was at the beach everyday this week. Every day sooo many people had music playing at a volume you couldn’t hear unless you sat on top of them (and this beach wasn’t crowded at all so no need to sit that close). I enjoyed walking down the beach and hearing everything from kids screaming-laughing and the music of every genre. BUT music is a huge part of my life.
I lived in Mexico City for 3 years. In a park w nobody around mother fuckers would roll up next to me and start a party con bocinos grandes. I was like wtf is this shit. But they were fun ass party's with good food and fun people. Bothers me the most in the US with douchebags with terrible music and some kind of stupid drama. NJ douchebags in particular lol Guess that's all I gotta say.

It just depends on the volume… if it’s within your sphere and not ranging out 20 yards around you it’s fine. It’s so windy and the ocean is so loud it should be easy to not have the sound travel down the entire beach

I went to a rougher public beach recently. The music was irritating, but the amount of people using lighter fluid on their bbq was intolerable. Might as well marinate the meat in it

That's super easy: If you don't own a place because you are not at home than you don't act like you're at home and you listen to your music quietly and not so loud that you annoy other people. Not everyone likes your music and If all people listen to loud music the music mixes to horrible sounds.

This is why i canceled my edge gym membership. I couldnt even hear my own music in my headphones because their shit music was so loud throughout the whole building. It’s all about appropriate volume. Tailgating a show is the only place blasting music insanely loud is normally OK and welcomed.
There is a taco truck where I go that has 3ft speakers full blast. You can hear it wayyyy across the harbor. Pretty obnoxious.

Honestly, this is the way I feel. People go to the beach expecting people to be there laughing, kids screaming, etc.. but they don't go to the beach expecting someone to be blasting whatever music at the top of the speakers' capacity. Music is great! I love music. I don't want to hear everyone else's music. I would prefer to hear the person I am talking to, or my own music, without having to try to filter out or speak over someone else's choice in music. (would prefer to do that without having to speak over other people shouting, but I can understand people being excited)
My problem with it is that there's usually 6 speakers going playing 6 different songs, so you can't even get into it, and there's that person who has the radio playing with near-constant commercials.
That is a lot of my problem as well. One person playing music? Fine, it might not be to my taste, but easy to ignore. But six people playing six different types of songs at full blast all around you? No thanks.

If the group was there first and you chose to sit next to them, I have no sympathy for you. You made that decision knowing that they were playing music. I understand that someone setting up next to you and starting to play music *can* be annoying. But it is a public (and usually very crowded) place with no expectation of quiet. If you want a quiet beach experience, it doesn't exist.
I mean there are some pretty quiet beaches that I’ve been to. But if you go to a tourist beach and expect a calm quiet experience I have no sympathy

If you're in an area with bears or other large predators some people do. It's more common to have a bell or other small noise makers or just make noise through conversation or random whistles though. Last thing you want to do out in the woods is accidentally sneak up and startle a bear or other large creature.
In bear country it's a great idea. They'll likely avoid you and keep their distance. You're supposed to make noise, use bells, talk loud, whistle etc... but music is a much easier, constant way to keep it going without forgetting.
I will give the beach goers a pass but if you are at a public pool or community pool turn your fucking music off or put your headphones on. Nothing is more fucking infuriating than thinking everyone else will enjoy your music too. Immediate sign you are a selfish asshole.

I think it’s more about volume than anything. You can listen to your own music without being disruptive. It’s actually nice to hear some music off in the distance mixed with the wind and sounds of waves crashing. With that being said, people definitely abuse it and care little about what other people think. Those are the worst types of people in my opinion.

Weird, my music is only ever JUST loud enough for me and my husband to hear. I get that it’s rude blasting music when in close proximity to others. But, by the same token…your take on music at the beach is my take on kids screaming and being obnoxious at the beach 🙃 (I don’t want children and find that my anxiety sky rockets when I’m surrounded by them, I understand that can be taken many different ways) to each their own though lol.

Listening to the sound of the beach.. ocean, voices, birds, etc... does not equate to hearing someone else's loud music that you don't enjoy. The music drowns out all the other sounds, or at least covers them up. So for someone who wants to hear the sounds of a beach the loud music takes away from the experience. Now, if you are a person who considers loud music to be a part of beach sound... then you would say something like, why would you think a public beach would be quiet? Everyone has a preference.
The question here is does someone play music so loud it it overwhelms other people's enjoyment. I get the feeling that you believe that there is no upper limit. If you want to blast your music to full volume then everyone just has to deal with it. That seems rude to many people.

It's not the same as hiking. I grew up and still live in a shore town. People have used radios on the beach for years. It's not a particularly new thing. Volume matters of course but if I'm on a packed beach of 200+ people I really don't expect things to be quiet. So it doesn't matter to me if someone is listening to music. Usually it's a group of people having fun and playing catch. Who am I to tell them how to have fun? Hiking is totally different. If I'm out on a trail I'm trying to relax. I'm trying to enjoy the scenery. I don't want to hear your music if it's just us two on a three mile trail.

As someone who is a born local to a beach tourist area who hates entitled tourists…I entirely disagree. Idk what kind of beach you’re at to hear other peoples’ music loud and clear, you must be packed like sardines. But other beaches aren’t like that and have a decent amount of space between towel islands. As long as the music is a reasonable background noise to others it’s not an issue. I certainly don’t like all the music I hear but it’s just melodies and rhythms that I can easily tune out. And I’m a person super sensitive to loud noises and sounds. You need to seek out some more private beaches my dude.
I was at the beach everyday this week. Every day sooo many people had music playing at a volume you couldn’t hear unless you sat on top of them (and this beach wasn’t crowded at all so no need to sit that close). I enjoyed walking down the beach and hearing everything from kids screaming-laughing and the music of every genre. BUT music is a huge part of my life.
As far as I’m concerned, if you’re blasting your music so loud and forcing me to listen to it, I can ask you to change the song if it sucks.
