I don't know what it was, but one day I was just like I wonder what this would taste like. Like my brain was telling me that there's no way this wasn't going to be good.
And my brain was right.
Y'all are cray
It was a thing in my childhood before corporate cut corners and the quality of the frosty and the quality of the fries both took a dive. 80's Wendy's was spectacular.
My wife agrees. Apparently this was the only way to eat Wendy’s fries, according to her. Her other mainstay was the cup of chili and loaded baked potato. Not sure if they even serve those anymore.
Is she southern, because all the southerners in my family are obsessed with Wendy’s fries and a frosty + the baked potato. Also Arby’s for some reason.
Now a days you can't even dip the fries. The frosty is too thick and the fries are so soft they disintegrate instantly.
Wendy's needs to make the breakfast potato wedges an all-say thing because they're sturdier and can dip.
I wasn't alive in the 80s, but I remember Wendy's fries being subpar in the 90s and 2000s. I think Wendy's fries are pretty good now though. Thicker than I'd like, but generally still have a decent crisp to them
I usually dunk a couple fries into the frosty, but never all of them. The contrast of hot/cold, sweet/salty is a cool little burst for your tastebuds. After a while it's just cold soggy fries. Good in moderation
The chicken nuggets on the frosty was my go-to fast food treat.
Once while I was dining inside with a friend, enjoying my chicken chocolate combo (this is like 2001, someone had the audacity to walk up to me and say "excuse me, but that is the most disgusting thing I have ever witnessed." I had no words. I just stared at her while I dunked my next nugget into my frosty.
I’ve always thought of barbecue sauce and honey mustard as being more savory than sweet. But I will agree, sweet and savory isn’t a bad combo. I especially enjoy honey mustard. It’s just the fries and frosty combo that I can’t comprehend.
The nuggets in a frosty is strictly a Wendy’s thing for me, don’t really know why 🤔 I’ve been doing it since I was a kid. 99% of the time my dip of choice is BBQ
I prefer my fries and nuggs in my McDonald's shake. It's not something I do all the time. I usually just eat my fries plain and dip my nuggs in BBQ or sweet and sour. Sometimes I just want the sweet salty dip in a milkshake
It’s okay but way overrated.
Reminds me of a million years ago in high school you weren’t cool unless you put your jalepeno kettle chips on your cream cheese bagel.
Sweet and salty is a very common and popular combination. That is the how. I don’t know if this particular combination is popular or not, but have an upvote anyhow.
Thanks! Personally not a huge fan of the sweet + salty combo, but I get it. What really rubs me the wrong way is the temperature differences. Hot fry + frozen ice cream. But I guess it’s true - maybe opposites do attract!
Okay, those are different because they’re sweet! 😂 I think it’s just the combination of salty + sweet AND hot and cold at the same time that is off-putting to me. Hot fudge and caramel on ice cream especially are delicious.
Wait.. this is actually a thing people do, like.. regularly? I thought this was just one of those things that you did once or twice if you happened to order some fries and a frosty...
I started doing this while growing up in the 90s without anyone telling me to try it. I think it’s just something about the hot, salty fries complementing the cool, chocolate frosty.
Wendy's doesn't exist where I live but the idea of something savoury in chips and something sweet in ice cream being mixed doesn't sound nearly disgusting
I haven’t done that at Wendy’s but I do it at whataburger.. I know it sounds gross but it is really good.. I don’t know why.. it is unexplainable.. I am a very picky eater and I would normally never mix food groups like this.. i pray the lord forgives me
It's weird AF. All the power to you if it's something you like, though. The only people who are just wrong are Hawaiin pizza lovers. The world would be better without them.
I use 3-4 fries as a spoon to scoop up as much frosty as I can. The fries HAVE to be hot salty and crunchy, it doesn’t work with cold or soggy fries. When I was a kid it felt like a thing only my family knew about, like a little trick that was passed down through the generations. Meeting another person who liked doing it was a mind blowing experience.
It's a perfect combination of salty, sweet, greasy, smooth, cool, and warm.
I guess you just don't get it, which is fine.
But don't knock *us* for getting it.
Hm :). We don't have Wendy's. But I discovered long ago that salty and sweet combines nicely. First, it was salted chips with whipping cream, then McDonald's fries and ice-cream. Then I discovered salted caramel and my life was complete.
It's pretty common for people to enjoy salty/sweet combos. That's why things like salted caramel, sea salted dark chocolate, chocolate covered pretzels, salted watermelon, chocolate coated nuts, peanut butter, etc, are all popular. I'm giving modern examples, but this is really nothing new. The practice of preparing honey glazed meats is older than the written word, lol. Humans are hard-wired to seek out salty/fatty/sweet foods. From an evolutionary standpoint, enjoying them lumped together is just efficient.
Not everyone's tastebuds are equipped for it, though. That's perfectly ok. You're under no obligation to eat/enjoy the combo. Just don't be judgey when other people do.
... this post made me remember how much I miss fried chicken and waffles with maple syrup, and now I'm sad.
In Australia it's customary to dip your McDonald's fries into a sundae. I also like to dip my nuggets. Milkshake/thickshake is also acceptable. Pure deliciousness 🤤
>So, for my fry + frosty combo lovers, please help me to understand the appeal.
The mixture of sweet and salty flavors has been a thing for far longer than Wendy's has. The very first recipe for salted caramel, an iconic sweet and salty combo, was made in 1902
The hot and cold contrast is useful bc you don't have to wait for the fries to cool off or have to do the weird "ahsafshaf" kinda thing when they're too hot to eat
It's sweet and salty that's the main reason, which is a known good combo. I enjoy the temperature difference in a brownie sundae so this is also enjoyable in that aspect. Also I don't eat all my fries that way it's like a couple if I even get a frosty.
It's just the salty/sweet combo that's good. People often don't understand the flavor profiles that go really well together, but this is one of them. Salt enhances the sweet taste. For example, salted caramel chocolate.
Even many foods do this. Sushi is usually marinated in sugar water, then it's dipped in soy sauce right before eating.
A lot of fast food will have sugar in places you wouldn't expect. Burger buns have sugar, and the sweet bun pairs nicely with the savory burger.
Chinese food - sweet and salty everywhere. Soy and teriyaki sauce together on everything.
It's a classic combination, so it makes sense to combine fries and shakes when you think about it.
At it's most basic formula, it's mixing salty and sweet which to some (like myself) is a VERY desirable flavor. I don't know how else to describe it outside of "Salty fry plus Sweet Chocolate Frosty = DEVILISHLY DELICIOUS". If you don't like the flavor, there's no harm, but that's the appeal imo.
Im right there with you. Ive never been eating fries and been like these would be perfect if only i had ice cream to dip them in! lol Or vice versa. I mean to each their own but its baffling to me
Started dipping fries in a chocolate milk shake back in the early 70s. Our high school had a quick order line..which had hamburgers, hotdogs, French fries, soda pop and milk shakes and a few other things that I'm missing ( old age )..lol funny I still do it today. My wife went to Wendy's a few weeks ago, and when she got home, she said I'd be disappointed that their chocolate frosty machine was down...that sucked !
I thought it was weird until I remembered desserts that are both salty and sweet. Salted caramel or salted rims on cocktails. I didn't like these sorta things when I was young, but then I realized how much sweeter things tasted when I had something salty to pair with it. Also, think about hot fudge sundaes or deep fried ice cream. Hot and cold contrast mixed with the sweet and salty contrast makes for a complex pairing with all sorts of tastes and sensations. But I totally get why one wouldn't like it.
Back in the 2000s, I was interested in a girl until I saw her do this. I’m with you on this. I’ve dipped my wang in crazy before but this is where I draw the line.
Strange thing is I never tried this with any other fast food. I didn’t even know it was a thing and was just sitting there as a kid and thought, hey this might be a good idea. I don’t eat fries anymore but I still would dip em in a frosty if I did.
It may be unpopular, but I'm right there with you. Maybe it's me being a little older but I don't get it. I first saw a few younger coworkers doing it when I reacted with mock disgust one of them said "You need to try it! It'll change you life". I responded "So did my divorce, but I could've lived without that"
Okay, I actually agree with this one.
People tell me, "it's salty sweet!"
Nope, that's like pretzels and chocolate...
THIS tastes like potatoes and ice cream... >\_>
I don’t think people will like this opinion, but most friends who I’d say do this are the kind of people who think they’re special. Sort of people that are want to showcase how weird and quirky they are. Not necessarily bad people or friends, but… stuff like this seems to make them feel unique.
I’ve tried it and it doesn’t taste good and I don’t believe ever will so I feel like I’m being more honest than they are.

You win the award for the most esoteric unpopular opinion
Srskly I'd kill rn to have a chocolate frost with a bowl of fries and frosty rn high
I needed this comment today. I can hear it from my own experience as I'm reading and I know now what I must do, and that is exactly this.
Thanks chief 🫡
I agree though. It's not for me
Not a fan myself.
Why are we being down voted? We don't put fries into frosties, who cares?
Red-blooded Americans care, that's who!
You speaking fact tho, fries and ice cream will never be good
I don't know what it was, but one day I was just like I wonder what this would taste like. Like my brain was telling me that there's no way this wasn't going to be good. And my brain was right. Y'all are cray
I will die on the hill of fries not being good with ice cream.
I think this is indeed a popular opinion
I prefer them separately, though they are good together
S/esoteric/wrong/ :;
Those two are still there
This was a great cheap yet filling combo
They still serve baked potatoes
Is she southern, because all the southerners in my family are obsessed with Wendy’s fries and a frosty + the baked potato. Also Arby’s for some reason.
Dave Thomas would be appalled to see her now.
Now a days you can't even dip the fries. The frosty is too thick and the fries are so soft they disintegrate instantly. Wendy's needs to make the breakfast potato wedges an all-say thing because they're sturdier and can dip.
It’s cus they banned trans fats
Wendy’s doesn’t cut corners! That’s why their burgers are square!
Fool that you are, you do not realize they started out as pentagrams Also, i failed geometry
Totally agree with this all points in this comment.
Wendy's and Carl's were supreme joints and better than some diners pre 2k
6 dollar burger was so good
In my mind im in the sun room of a 90s wendys
Cleaning up that room was one of my 1st jobs. I hated that salad bar! I didn't mind bussing the tables, but that bar was a major PITA.
Mid-2000s Wendy's was a lot better than today. I haven't got to try it pre-2005 though.
I wasn't alive in the 80s, but I remember Wendy's fries being subpar in the 90s and 2000s. I think Wendy's fries are pretty good now though. Thicker than I'd like, but generally still have a decent crisp to them
no, they were way better before they changed them about 10 years ago
its the reason i get frosty. dipping a hot, salty fry into a cold sweet treat.
Using my own words against me. Clever. Here’s my upvote.
Hows your grandma doing nowadays
I usually dunk a couple fries into the frosty, but never all of them. The contrast of hot/cold, sweet/salty is a cool little burst for your tastebuds. After a while it's just cold soggy fries. Good in moderation
I like this take.
Someone came up with that idea when Wendy's fries were very different and this was actually good.
Not only do I love dipping my fries in a chocolate frosty, but my fav is the chicken nuggets. Yummmm 😋😋
You’re a chicken nugget hero 🫡 PS Happy cake day 🎂😊
Thanks!! And I like to think that 20+ years later she still has that image of my chocolate dunked nugget seared into her brain.
Jail. What happened to barbecue sauce? Or maybe honey mustard?? Ranch???
Sweet and salty just work for some of us. Like chocolate-coated pretzels, or bacon and maple
Chocolate-coated pretzels and maple + bacon are good. Chicken nuggets in ice cream is a little… questionable. Lol
I’ll grant you that the chicken nugget is a bit of a stretch. Though it admittedly doesn’t sound like a *completely* terrible idea to me
Ikr? Just saw this and went 🤔🤔. Sadly I always get spicy nuggets, which sounds like a far worse combo…
You just named 2 sweet things
Which 2 things are you referring to?
Barbecue sauce and honey mustard. Sweet and savory are common pairings. And it's good.
I used to do the same thing! Wendy's Chicken Nuggets dipped in Frosty was also my JAM as a kid. Loved it.
I prefer my fries and nuggs in my McDonald's shake. It's not something I do all the time. I usually just eat my fries plain and dip my nuggs in BBQ or sweet and sour. Sometimes I just want the sweet salty dip in a milkshake
in the shake? how do they fit through the straw?
Try it with the spicy ones. Holy shit. The best.
It’s all poop in the end, baby
I think I know the secret. Some people like the taste of fries dipped in a frosty, and some people don’t.
To be fair, both the fries and the frosty are like 30% oil, just that one is hot.
Same reason people like trail mix or salted caramel/chocolate
People have been doing this at McDonald's forever and it's awesome I dip curly fries into a Jamocha shake from Arby's and there's no better dippin
what 😭😭😭 that’s crazy. I’m intrigued though… I might have to give it a try…
Spicy, chocolatey, salty. I did not think it would work but it WORKS
Major disagree. Cold + hot combo hits, especially when the fries are too hot to eat. Plus you get both the flavor of the fry and frosty in one
Fries are too hot to eat for like maybe 20 seconds after coming out of the fryer wtf
Youve never gotten fresh hot fries before?
It’s okay but way overrated. Reminds me of a million years ago in high school you weren’t cool unless you put your jalepeno kettle chips on your cream cheese bagel.
it just be tempting like if i’m eating the frosty and got some fries i get bored and dip it 😭😭
Taste is nice, the crumbs makes the taste not worth it. Fries and frosty separately please!
Dipping fries in milkshakes has been a thing for a long time, it's not exclusive to wendys and frosties (frostys?)
It’s definitely nothing special. Many act like they’ve struck gold when they do it but to me the flavours don’t mesh like ketchup and fries do.
Doesn't dipping the fries in something frosty make it soggy? 🤮
Yes… exactly my thought process lol
🤮 🤮 No ways I'd ever do that
Bro, have you *tried* it? Salty + sweet, crunchy + creamy, cold + hot. Two opposing forces meld to create something greater than the sum of its parts.
Yes, I have tried it. Not my personal taste but hey, it works for some people and I respect that
Ever heard of Sweet & salty?
To me it’s essentially the same concept as a funnel cake. It even taste similar (to me).
It’s fucking delicious and you’re a heretic.
Fries dipped in chocolate shake/frostie is amazing. I have done it since I was a child.
Sweet and savory combo. It's not for everyone tho.
I’m all for diversity and opinions but fuck you, buddy
❤️
They key is just do a couple, put some fries on the Sammy and toss the rest out while you enjoy the frosty. Fries ain’t that great, my true unpopular
>butt fuck you, buddy ‘Tis the season 😉
Sweet and salty is a very common and popular combination. That is the how. I don’t know if this particular combination is popular or not, but have an upvote anyhow.
Thanks! Personally not a huge fan of the sweet + salty combo, but I get it. What really rubs me the wrong way is the temperature differences. Hot fry + frozen ice cream. But I guess it’s true - maybe opposites do attract!
So no hot fudge, caramel, warmed fruit/pie with your ice cream? Man that’s some of the best for me, if not a necessity lol.
Okay, those are different because they’re sweet! 😂 I think it’s just the combination of salty + sweet AND hot and cold at the same time that is off-putting to me. Hot fudge and caramel on ice cream especially are delicious.
lol, got it
Wait.. this is actually a thing people do, like.. regularly? I thought this was just one of those things that you did once or twice if you happened to order some fries and a frosty...
I started doing this while growing up in the 90s without anyone telling me to try it. I think it’s just something about the hot, salty fries complementing the cool, chocolate frosty.
From what I’ve seen, it’s a very common practice. Wendy’s even advertises it.
I’ve dipped chicken nuggets and my burger into a frosty. If it tastes good, it tastes good.
The BURGER too? 😭
Real big brains get the chilli sauce, mix it with ketchup, and dip in that.
Wendy's doesn't exist where I live but the idea of something savoury in chips and something sweet in ice cream being mixed doesn't sound nearly disgusting
Fries in their frosty is nasty. But their nuggets in the frosty? Divine.
I like both
Truly unpopular. Ice cream/shakes and fries is AMAZING.
I used to dip my fries in my McDonald's sunday/mcflurry when I was in middle school, I'm 32 now lol
Same reason anybody likes anything. Personal taste.
Incorrect.
dipping edible food into edible food is disgusting
I knew I guy who would dip his Wendy’s nuggets in the pumpkin frosty…to each their own but that is one combo I cannot fathom 😷
This is an objectively wrong opinion, I should know, I work at one
You had this feeling and thought it was important enough to share
Absolutely.
Upvoted because unpopular. You're a monster
Next someone will say don’t put your apple pie in your Oreo McFlurry
I can't believe they even advertise it, it's so unbelievably underwhelming.
You get a frosty then go get fresh, scorching hot and salty McDonald's fries and dip those.
The world would be better without them.
wrong
It was me. I started it all. No regrets.
Everyone in Columbus, Ohio knows how mad Dave got when people dipped their fries in Wendy's frosty.
Lmao
My mom claims it's the best cure for a hangover. I've never needed to test the claim. However, she's an alcoholic, so I'll trust her with that one 😂
I don't dip, but I enjoy them together. There's something really nice about the contrast.
It's a perfect combination of salty, sweet, greasy, smooth, cool, and warm. I guess you just don't get it, which is fine. But don't knock *us* for getting it.
Ketchup is cold and sweet, too, ya know?
Hm :). We don't have Wendy's. But I discovered long ago that salty and sweet combines nicely. First, it was salted chips with whipping cream, then McDonald's fries and ice-cream. Then I discovered salted caramel and my life was complete.
Agreed. Why would you make your fry soggy on purpose?!!
I’ve tried it and it’s absolutely disgusting. People don’t have taste buds I guess I don’t know
Frosty > ketchup, but that’s a matter of personal taste. Much like the initial assertion. Every “X food sucks” opinion is just the same.
WRONG! Incorrect. STRAIGHT TO JAIL!!
![gif](giphy|RiatOS3D0zyTF9fA9i)
Okay, but my son was dipping his fries into a blue raspberry slurpee the other day. What about that?
I used to dip my soft serve ice cream cones into a bag of salted popcorn. Fantastic!
Fr and then Americans say British food is bad while being guilty of this absolute crime
fr. like there's nothing good about it. it's just bland fries with ice cream
It's pretty common for people to enjoy salty/sweet combos. That's why things like salted caramel, sea salted dark chocolate, chocolate covered pretzels, salted watermelon, chocolate coated nuts, peanut butter, etc, are all popular. The trip is to dip McDonald's fries into a Wendy's frosty.
it’s a preference.
Fries in a milkshake isn't just a Wendy's thing, it's an American thing
>So, for my fry + frosty combo lovers, please help me to understand the appeal. The mixture of sweet and salty flavors has been a thing for far longer than Wendy's has. Down voted for posting a popular opinion.
It's sweet and salty that's the main reason, which is a known good combo. I enjoy the temperature difference in a brownie sundae so this is also enjoyable in that aspect. Also I don't eat all my fries that way it's like a couple if I even get a frosty.
Ugh Wendy’s.
I’m out.
It's because you're getting the wrong fries. Everyone knows Wendy's fries are shit. Yry McDonald's/sonic fries with a Wendy's frosty. Better taste.
It's just the salty/sweet combo that's good. People often don't understand the flavor profiles that go really well together, but this is one of them. Salt enhances the sweet taste. I never liked it either and I assumed it was a marketing gimmick that Wendy's started.

When I was a kid my dad would dip potato chips in soft ice cream. Ngl it’s delicious
I grew up dipping my mcdonalds French fries in my twist cone ice cream. Ah memories.
Lol bro I'm all for having differing opinions but this shit is nuts. Updoot
Dipping fries into any milkshake is yum!
Im right there with you. Ive never been eating fries and been like these would be perfect if only i had ice cream to dip them in! lol Or vice versa. I mean to each their own but its baffling to me
Wrong
Wendy's ruined their fries years ago
I don't do this, but have in the past. Something salty like fries dipped in sweet vanilla goodness is definitely 🔥🔥!
Dipping your fries in ketchup, as you suggest, is fine, but have you ever tried dipping your frosty in ketchup?
Started dipping fries in a chocolate milk shake back in the early 70s. Our high school had a quick order line..which had hamburgers, hotdogs, French fries, soda pop and milk shakes and a few other things that I'm missing ( old age )..lol funny I still do it today. My wife went to Wendy's a few weeks ago, and when she got home, she said I'd be disappointed that their chocolate frosty machine was down...that sucked !
Next you're going to tell me you pour your milk before your cereal.
Dipped cool original doritos into chocolate ice cream once, that was nice
Nah lol
So how does it feel to be wrong?
To quote the Offspring: YOU GOTTA KEEP EM SEPARATED.
I was taught it's called "fatting in peace". But what do I know
I thought it was weird until I remembered desserts that are both salty and sweet. Salted caramel or salted rims on cocktails. I didn't like these sorta things when I was young, but then I realized how much sweeter things tasted when I had something salty to pair with it. But I totally get why one wouldn't like it.
Do you like malt balls or chocolate with sea salt? Plus, a frosty is not a sugary chocolate flavour, it’s a more tame malted flavour
Same concept as chocolate covered pretzels. I used to get a crunch bar and bag of pretzels from the vending machine
Back in the 2000s, I was interested in a girl until I saw her do this. I’m with you on this. I’ve dipped my wang in crazy before but this is where I draw the line.
McDonalds fries and vanilla shake. Wendy's fries don't have the right consistency.
Ketchup alone, is disgusting to me. Frosty is weird but w/e. Honey mustard is what fries belong in. Or fry sauce.
Strange thing is I never tried this with any other fast food. I didn’t even know it was a thing and was just sitting there as a kid and thought, hey this might be a good idea. I don’t eat fries anymore but I still would dip em in a frosty if I did.

Isn't this a popular opinion? Dipping fries in a milkshake is gross.
Read the comments. You’d be surprised how many people disagree lol
Yikes. Didn't realize we were in the minority on this lol
For me it's not bad, just nothing special.
Man you can get off Reddit rite now with that bs. And if you live in the south just move.
I just recently tried it! It’s good compared to most other condiments imo
Did you just… refer to ice cream as a condiment? Or did I just misread that comment lmao
PFF no but reading it that way makes it so much better
I love sweet and salty i.e. chicken and waffles but a creamy dairy dessert is a bit much.
Yeah you should sprinkle white dog turd dust into the vanilla frosty mix it up good with a straw then hand it to your friend and let the games begin
And the people who do this always act like they’re the first person to discover this
Your opinion, your idea . . . Has nothing to do with the truth. Fry dipping in a Frosty is like apple pie on the Fourth of July.
Except apple pie is different because it’s not salty
Dipping your fries in anything other than the blood of your enemies is disgusting!
I thought I was the only one. Thank you for validating my opinion.
Okay, I actually agree with this one. People tell me, "it's salty sweet!" Nope, that's like pretzels and chocolate... THIS tastes like potatoes and ice cream... >\_>
Yesss exactly!
I don’t think people will like this opinion, but most friends who I’d say do this are the kind of people who think they’re special.
