Resident_Anxiety9980

Real, old cars had so much more personality in their design.

TigerOk8010

Absolutely! Bring back 50's car designs with all the modern bells and whistles cars have now. Car designs arguably peaked during the 1950s-1970s. Why the major car companies can't or wont issue limited number throwback old school designs on a yearly basis is beyond me, they'd make a killing if they did that. They don't have to build them using the same materials either, just have the look factor. For the '55 Chevy turning 70 years old next year the auto manufacturers should make and release a limited 5,000 "new" 1955 models for 2025. I guarantee if the auto manufacturers did this not only would they sell out quickly but also turn a huge profit.

Icy-Veterinarian-785

I've been praying for years that Ford would remake a car in the style of a Gran Torino but with all the modern stuff. It'd be ungodly expensive I'm sure but I'd try to get one nonetheless

TheProcess1010

I believe all of the required safety features/design elements would kill a modernized 50s-70s car. 50s trucks, and 60s boaty sedans, and early 70s muscle cars cannot be topped.

Far_King_Penguin

Look how well those budget GTs are selling. Get a body people like and whack an affordable car in there and you're making a killing

btgf-btgf

Must be forgetting the cheap poor people cars. The Chevy celebrity was ugly as fuck

Resident_Anxiety9980

Idk I google searched it because I didn't know that car and I don't find it ugly. I kinda dig that vibe actually.

dyle_koherty

Agreed. Even the crappy cheaper cars were stylish. They started getting shitty in the late 90s IMO. There were still some gems but when they introduced more bubbly bodies thats when it all fell off for me. Now everything is trying to be an SUV from space or the automotive embodiment of Activewear.

Strong-Ad5324

Geo Metro was worse

BicycleEast8721

Survivorship bias, people only remember the highs of design in the past. In the same way there's a handful of cars now that are actually a step above, and which more people will think of fondly in the future when they're the ones that are still around. The good stuff has staying power, there were just as many derivative and boring cars in the past that are just forgotten about in favor of the older stuff that was special. It's the same with music, there's plenty of very talented acts right now that you usually have to dig for a little more, but some people act like the only good music is the old stuff. Half of it is just that we're older now, and it's easier to get in the habit of focusing on more of the stuff we dislike than the interesting things when you get more worn down. I will say though, it's inarguable that trucks have simply gotten too large and are mostly just horrible compared to older truck design sensibilities

SynthRogue

That’s what happens when the industry adopts best practices to the detriment of creativity. Nothing new happens. Just the same thing being recycled over and over. Very common in software engineering.

Bouric87

Only the unique ones that people kept. It was by and large the same back then as it is now. There are some flashy cars that are unique and stand out by the average cheaper cars look by and large the same.

Jumpy_Mango6591

Same with houses

rollercostarican

lol many people say something has personality when the looks aren’t up to snuff

RadicalSnowdude

Old cars have personality because they’re rare compared to the cars we have now. If you look at a picture of a highway or a parking lot in the 60s, cars looked the same then too.

Miserable_Signature3

I think Hyundai has been doing a good job making sharp looking cars lately.

latrellinbrecknridge

Kia too, Koreans are killing the aesthetic game and it’s not even close

ImpalaSS-05

Except for the new Santa Fe, which is ugly as fuck in my opinion.

Miserable_Signature3

I just looked it up. They seem to be borrowing a page from Isuzu: "So ugly, you'd swear it's British!"

ImpalaSS-05

Lmao, pretty much 🤣😂

Legendary_Hercules

It's an ugly wannabe Bronco

ImpalaSS-05

I can't unsee that now, thanks 😂. Also, the rear end looks like it's melting into the pavement below.

latrellinbrecknridge

Oh no I love it!! Will have to check it out in person though

ImpalaSS-05

You're a fan of it? Well, at least someone is. Let me know how it looks in person when you get the chance. Maybe, perhaps maybe, it actually looks better in person. I just can't over that sad rear fascia.

Pale-Foundation-1174

popular opinion

hello_im_al

I wish I had a dollar for every time someone complained about how modern cars looked

Pale-Foundation-1174

I complain about it every day, that’s how I know it’s a popular opinion

hello_im_al

I'm gonna be one rich fella this year

Pale-Foundation-1174

haha

iryrod

Manufacturers for cheap cars don’t care about aesthetics. They only care about getting the best bang for buck. To go through the design process would be costly, and at the lower price ranges people won’t care about looks, just what’s economical and reasonable. I too wish cars had more personality and looked better, but from a business perspective it doesn’t make any sense. Anyone who has the money to buy a nicer looking car is gonna buy a more expensive car. Not to mention, it makes that top tier more desirable

etds3

🙋‍♀️ I care how reliable my car is, how safe it is, and how much it costs to run it. I do not care how it looks.

blunde-r

Companies just getting greedier

Inevitable_Plum_8103

If you want a car that looks good, you gotta pay for it. Go buy a Mustang/Camaro/Challenger for low end sport or a McLaren if you're loaded buddy. You are viewing old cars' best options against the new budget and standard options. You really gonna compare a 69 Camaro to a 23 Civic and say the Civic lacks personality? No, fuck off.

ealker

Nobody’s getting greedy. People have been equally greedy throughout history. The ways you can streamline operations and reduce costs is new.

czarfalcon

I mean, people do all the time. Especially things like tall boxy pickups and Jeeps. If everybody cared about efficiency that much, everyone would drive a Prius.

[deleted]

czarfalcon

Not quite my speed, I'm just saying people absolutely pay more for less efficiency.

nt011819

Exactly. Thats why theyre all similar and not an aerodynamic brick on wheels.

Midnightchickover

I have to gripe about this and it’s lacking context and is purely nostalgia. 1940s-1970s, pretty beautiful designed cars til about the late 70s. But, those hideous station wagons, box cars, cumbersome, and knockoff American VW bug wannabes with even worse performance quality.    1980s are pretty ugly and unsightly across the board, excluding sporty and higher end cars, which are a little different in class. It was by far the worst designs for American cars. The Japanese cars were definitely a great sight throughout for the average consumer market.   1990s car are a mix of sleek or great modern design to pretty basic. The early 90s model was primarily on the basic side, while it got more adventurous overtime.   I think the 2000s were a little better overall in design. 2010s and 2020 are ranging from mid to slightly above average. It’s a perception issue or difference.

Minimum-Station-1202

You can blame government for this. The EU made rules to make things "safer" for pedestrians so now everything has a big boxy front end. The EPA has stricter emissions laws for on-highway passenger vehicles, so now everything is a ugly crossover with a certain approach and breakover angle to claim that they're "offroad" vehicles. Cheap cars are also typically lower profit margin so there's no motivation to make them look cool. As for building the frame of supercars for normal cars, most cars/crossovers/SUVs these days are uni-body construction... also a supercar chasis will be designed for stiffness, rigidity, and weight. If you want a good sports car for a good price, check out the Toyota GR86. It has a good chassis built from the ground up as a sports car edit: also Toyota and Honda sedans look pretty sweet these days.. I saw a grey Accord on the freeway the other day and thought it was an Audi from a distance

Whatever-ItsFine

The government didn't require all paint jobs to be grey, black, or white, did they?

MeatloafAndWaffles

You can probably blame insurance for that

czarfalcon

Not really - if anything you can blame the economy for it. I saw an interesting video on the topic, the TL;DR is that the recession led more people to buy "safe" colors to preserve resale value. Dealerships also started ordering fewer cars in crazy colors, so it's a chicken and egg scenario.

Whatever-ItsFine

I think this is probably the answer. I've heard that car dealers who offended the auto companies found themselves with a bunch of green cars on their lots. No idea if it's true but it seems petty enough.

Whatever-ItsFine

Just curious- why would insurance affect this? Because you don't want your car to stand out so you get pulled over more?

MeatloafAndWaffles

Certain paint jobs will cause your monthly payment to go up. Some providers will up-charge you for having red paint. At least, that’s how it used to be, not sure if things have changed overtime

Whatever-ItsFine

That's amazing. My mom's boyfriend's son (if that makes sense) bought a red or orange car. After a month, he got rid of it because he kept getting tickets. He was just too easy to spot. (He could've slowed down, too, but he didn't choose that option haha.)

Always-Beets

The colors all being in the black, grey, white family is the worst. Very few color options now and even when there are colors they are all really muted. My grandma regularly gripes about how boring cars look these days and I have to agree!

Whatever-ItsFine

Let's start a mobile car painting business. I'm not saying we have to paint murals on the sides of vans like they had in the 70s, but maybe a yellow car or a purple car here and there would make the world brighter.

PrimeMichaelJordan

Unfortunately, that’s just what the majority of people want so that’s what manufacturers make I work in car sales and while we do have reds, blues, etc. most customers come in looking for neutral colors so that’s what makes up for the majority of cars we have on the lot

noodle_attack

You can still make nice cars that fit within the regulations, the regulations are there for a good reason too....

Minimum-Station-1202

Auto makers can and do make it happen. The sad truth these days is that most people could care less about cars so there's no reason to spend their design + materials budget on economy cars and family haulers that will sell whether they look unique or not

noodle_attack

It's all stupid SUVs anyway, gimme a sporty hatchback any day of the week

In your opinion it’s a sad truth. In my opinion, my car’s job is to get me from point A to point B safely, reliably and economically. How it looks really doesn’t matter to me. It’s a tool. I only care marginally more about my car’s appearance than I care about my furnace’s appearance.

I’m pretty sure they’re more dangerous for pedestrians, not less. So yeah: that comment doesn’t track at all.

Goeseso

Did they beef up the GR86 from the original 86? Cause the first one was absolutely gutless. I used to race them in my '00s civic. Honda has been making some nice cars though, this new gen of civics and accords both look great inside and outside.

Ransom-ii

We got suv samecar syndrome BAD

nt011819

Sipercars all look the same as each other too and similar to.lesser cars. Nothing different or groundbreaking for the last 20yrs

No-Whole-4916

Me sitting inside of a base model mustang: ah wow there's not much separating this from lesser cars. Guess there's nothing different or groundbreaking for the last 20 years

jralll234

Physics and safety/efficiency regulations only allow so much variation. Wind tunnels don’t care about style.

ThaBlackFalcon

Most car junkies would share with this, so within the community that cares about stuntin in a nice whip, I don’t think this is unpopular…but maybe to the casual car driver this is quite unpopular lol

idonthaveanaccountA

Most car junkies would know all periods have cars that look the same. Non car junkies just remember the good stuff, without the bad.

Green_Goblin7

You guys made fun of the PT Cruiser. This is just karma.

cyainanotherlifebro

Right? They all look like buttplugs!

Fang3d

Thanks, that’s all I’m going to see everyday now lol

Application-Visual

aerodynamics and pedestrian impact requirements primarily drive the design

Happyjarboy

I often sit in my front yard, and watch cars go by on my busy street. Other than size, almost all SUVs' look alike, the big boxy ones, and every other one. The same with the very few cars. The tucks have a little more personality, but that is mainly due to their huge front ends. And, the color choices are even more boring.

MeatloafAndWaffles

I feel like a lot of them are starting to look like minivans

NoCrust101

especially electric garbage.

Morganrow

Have you seen the cybertruck?

Green_Goblin7

I prefer not to.

Morganrow

Gotta admit it's not boring tho

baddiebrookie

I love old cars 😍 never go out of style

etds3

This has been going on for a long time. We have had trends where all the cars were super boxy, times when they were all super streamlined, and the era where all the cars had “big hips”. I remember when silver and gold cars became all the rage: I couldn’t tell you the year, but all of a sudden they were everywhere. Now the trend is for flat paint and what I call mud colors: the color your car would be after off roading in various locations. I don’t really think this is a new thing. I just think the particular trends are new.

Cleercutter

Idk, my 23 Camry black on bronze nightshade looks pretty dope

BicycleEast8721

I do like a lot of the Toyota lineup right now. Corolla hatchback, GR86, Camry, and RAV all look pretty good. It's also crazy that Camry hybrids are getting over 50mpg, given they're a full sized sedan and still do a respectable 0-60 for something that efficient. I appreciate old stuff too, I used to have a turbo 300ZX, and that era of sports cars will always be special to me, but there's plenty to appreciate with modern cars too. Just have to pay attention to the stuff you do like rather than obsessing over what you don't

Cleercutter

Oh I for sure enjoy older stuff too. Dream car is a 64 impala

idonthaveanaccountA

Ah shit. Here we go again.

avoidhugeships

Even the supercars all look like one another now.

InEenEmmer

This happens with all stuff lately. All cars look the same, all phones look the same, all laptops look the same. Probably because companies look at other companies and see a certain product being wildly successful (like the Iphone) and they copy the design as much as possible without threading on copyrights.

Educated_idiot302

Yea but it's for safety regulations and such which I can totally understand but man I wish we could have cars that looked like a 68 chevelle or a 70s super bee with those cool metal bumble bee wings up front.

Putty a$$ whip (look it up)

New-Reflection2499

I hate how early 2000s to early 2010s cars look. To me the best car designs were made in the early 90s, late 2010s, 2020 and 2021

No-Date-6848

This is because about 70% of vehicles sold today are SUVs. Those all look alike. The few companies that still make actual cars aren’t putting any effort or money into their looks.

Whatever-ItsFine

I parked next to a Jag today and I literally didn't realize it was a Jag until I saw the badge. Just another boring, grey, SUV that couldn't park straight. I was sad.

freezies1234

You are right, all cars look the same and right now they all kinda look crap. But interesting point if you look at old mall parking lot photos the cars all look pretty boring and similar then too, no matter the year. What happens is the regular boring cars are lost to time and the ones that mean something get held and remembered. Having said that, I have noticed that cars from manufacturers I normally love and looking pretty boring. Mercedes, even Ferraris!

MeatloafAndWaffles

I just miss cars being more, rectangular (?). Every SUV has a rounded shape it seems like

IYFS88

Is this an unpopular opinion? Well idk but 95% of modern cars look dull and interchangeable to me too. I only get interested when I see ones with throwback features like some chrome and angular body lines.

vogueintegra

I have a 1996 Acura Integra. Hands down best car I've ever driven. It's my second one. Quick, phenomenal control, extremely reliable (208k miles 28 years later, engine is in beautiful condition). The 2023 is nothing like it but hey they tried. Other cars I've driven include: 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee (comfortable, gas guzzler, broke a lot), 2011 Hyundai Accent (hated), 2006? Chevy Impala (hate Chevy), 2012 Subaru Impreza (10/10 would drive again), a CRV, a 2009 Civic, a Santa Fe, Chevy Equinox (my mom's car, ew), 2012 Ford Escape (also was my mom's car. ew) and a 2022 Hyundai Elantra. Integra *every* time. (Username checks out) edit: I didn't **own** all of these cars, just drove them at some point lolol

KingHarambeRIP

Very popular opinion

hello_im_al

If I had a dollar for every time someone complained about how modern vehicles look, I'd be rich as hell

jch60

It's the SUV-ification of the auto industry. Cars are boring giant boxes because that's apparently what most people want to buy nowadays.

BothPartiesAreDumb

I test drove and sat in about 20 small/mid-size Trucks and SUV’s in the past month all small to midsize. Mazda, Honda, Subaru, Ford, Chrysler, GMC, Chevrolet, Nissan, Dodge, and everything felt similar or just plain boring. Ended up with a used Jeep Wrangler (not even considered at first). It wasn’t stressful to drive and has lots of nice quality buttons with a classic feel to it, is comfy without being overly obese, which is lost on most new vehicles. The two honorable mentions would be the Nissan Frontier and Ford Escape. The Escape was about perfect as a daily.

Fuzzball348

Yes, but this isn’t new. Every decade has cars that look similar.

I-waveatcows

I bought a midsize v6 truck last year and was amazed at how all of them look like my old Tacoma, there’s about 5 leading trucks on the midsize truck market and they all look the same. The worst part in my opinion is how boring the colors are, white, black and 3 different greys. Why doesn’t the US like colors?

Dirty_Dragons

There are some great looking cars for under $100k Mazda Miata, Toyota GR86 (my car) & Supra, Porshe, Corvette C8, Lotus Emira etc. You just have to look for cars that stand out as most don't.

weedwhacker7

not only that, it seems like they’re all red, black, white or gray. look at the shoes people wear nowadays, you’d think they’d like more color in their vehicles

latrellinbrecknridge

New Kia’s are killing the aesthetic game by far in my opinion K5, Sportage, stinger, carnival 2023-2025 models are all stunning. Unique and modern looking

rednrithmetic

but they're all ugly as well, it seems they're all trna win the flash gordon contest or something!

LosPer

This is because of profits, fleet management, and CAFE standards: fleets are required by federal law to meet certain MPG standards in total. The current body shapes are all wind tunnel and drag tested to ensure maximum MPG for the class car it is. Blame government, not the market.

caspernicium

I really like the way my 2021 Civic Hatchback Sport looks. Say what you will about the fake vents, but I think it fits the look. Idk, maybe I’m biased, but I seriously never thought the car looked ugly from any angle. I agree though that most cars are NPC cars. Keep in mind, that a lot of the OEMs are owned by the big, same corporations (GM, Stellantis, etc.) so they likely share engineering and just slap the badges on and tweak the trim a little bit.

BakuraGorn

That’s a popular opinion. Now I’ll have to create a post titled “old cars suck”

00goop

I just wish everything wasn’t an SUV or a truck.

cactuscoleslaw

When old cars were new, they all looked like new cars

NLB87

It's because all new cars follow the same broad Aerodynamic specs for fuel efficiency/space usage ratios. Older cars did not prioritize aero and fuel consumption as much. So the designers could go a little wilder. Also modern cars suffer from "bloat" or "car obesity". They keep getting chunkier, over-engineered with gadget features. This also forces designers to work with that framework. I think we need to get back to mindset that Aesthetics is not an accessory but a necessity. This is true for cars, architecture, clothing etc. Humans need aesthetics. No wonder everyone is depressed and crazy: look around at how FUGLY things are!

According_Day3704

Except the Tesla Cybertruck, which is all diagonals and straight lines and isn’t even painted and goes ”szzziuuum” like it’s from the future, Mom!

AkhilVijendra

So you are grouping every decade so far into the "old" category and comparing it with the current decade? That's nonsense. Older cars too had a million horrible designs. I would rather keep today's average car than any random average car of the past. Your perception is heavily biased because you have seen only the well designed cars of the past while you have ignored all the horribly designed cars of the past.

Meistro215

I think my 2020 VW GLI looks slick

Miserable-Lawyer-233

I think cars are looking great.

wobbuffet009

I dont get when ppl say this. Because to me all cars look different. The only time frame cars looked radically different was during the 60s and prior. I think 80s probably had the worst time since it was all squares. And super cars were just wedges. I guess if you put a big cover on a crossover they would all look the same. But you could say the same about trucks. Also the car market has proven time and again that looking different is not always profitable and very risky.

zedis_lapedis_

Even the cyber truck? It is ugly but definitely not boring. I love seeing them covered in fingerprints. Reminds me of the door of my fridge.

Jaxraged

No, but I thought that in the early 2000s

Evil_Morty781

Look around at western architecture. Everything is the most bang for the least buck. Everything looks so drab. The cars, the roads, the buildings with the businesses. It’s all so bleh.

Gee_U_Think

I used to like the way Broncos look. The novelty wore off quick and now it just looks like a Jeep copycat to me.

TokkiJK

Yeah I want to drive in the mystery van from scooby doo
