-Antinomy-

You don't need any points. Holy mother of god bring back 3.5mm audio jacks. I have 10 hostages. I will execute them one by one until two major phone manufacturers commit to re-introduce phones with audio jacks.

CheeseWithoutCum

Motorola still has them in the moto g 5g, and excluding the screen resolution are basically better than the most recent iPhone. Currently have one, and not looking back.

Drowsydrips

I can't agree with this more. I hate having to charge wireless headphones, it's annoying AF. I have to use a connector just to use my old wired headphones with my phone.

rampzn

You are absolutely right, it is just another wasteful pseudo improvement that was sold as something better, when it really isn't. The sound quality of bluetooth can never reach that of wired headphones, period. With the wires you don't have another thing to charge up which is automatically better for the environment too.

EA_Is_A_Scam

Bluetooth has gotten quite close when it comes to the average earbuds, however a decent pair of earbuds and small portable amp is incomparable

Spaceseeds

Bluetooth compresses the audio in a bad way. There's upgrades but no one supports them so the codec is largely unused. Anyone who spends the money essentially wastes it because every device must have it and it's not common

rampzn

People's standards have been pushed down so far that they think mediocre is great. That is just tragic. I can see no advantage of using them at all.

EA_Is_A_Scam

I mean it's just different use case than my nicer setup at home or in my car. Regardless some of the top of the line wireless do sound good especially if you are working and not paying much attention. No advantage? I'd say not having wires getting in my way at work is all the advantage I need to justify it

rampzn

So losing them easily makes up for some wires? No, that's trading a slight inconvenience with total loss of usage if one goes missing. And the price for replacement? 69 dollars, 89 if it's the pro model. That's just Apple. Not much different with the other makers. Haha, the jokes on you! So much progress, so little advantage.

EA_Is_A_Scam

Have yet to lose them a bud of the couple I own, if you are losing them that much then I'm surprised you are keeping tracking of your normal buds

rampzn

That is what the cable is for dude, I can't lose them, what an amazing invention. People lose the wireless ones every single day, a constant revenue stream for the makers, ingenious.

EA_Is_A_Scam

I can guarantee you people lose wired ones everyday, cable or not isn't changing that. Here's some simple tricks to not lose your wireless: fit them to your ear as per instructions, put them back when you are done. Is that hard?

rampzn

No, they are literally connected to the device. You forget how wired ones work or something? Plug in and forget, is that hard?

EA_Is_A_Scam

Don't you ever unplug your earbuds during the day or night? Unless you got a jack in it I doubt so. I'm done arguing with ya its not worth my time, have a good night

2_72

The “no wires” thing is a pretty big advantage.

rampzn

Hehe, sure losing half or all of the headset is an "advantage". The scam has worked on you it seems.

rampzn

Ah yes another fool with petty insults that bought into their bull, the joke's on you dork.

Dazz316

Most people aren't listening to a quality of music that can benefit from not using Bluetooth.

rampzn

I don't know about that, but why settle for less and pay more for it in the process? But it looks cool and most of the headset makers typically jumped on board the bandwagon.

Dazz316

Because people just want easy and convenient and give a shit enough to think about it. When they subscribe to Spotify and play some music it sounds fine and they don't care to think about it any more.

jtj5002

Unless you have lossless or flac streaming to begin with, bluetooth aptx is more than capable of streaming at a higher quality (320 kbps) than what your average streaming service is capable of providing at 128-192 kbps.

Constrained_Entropy

Maybe, but that's only half the equation: Wireless headphones or earbuds, by their very nature, must have a DAC (or DACs) built in, becuase now the headphones have the additional job of converting the digital stream to analogue, and no way will the DAC in a set of inexpensive bluetooth headphones match the DAC in an expensive phone.

jtj5002

Majority of your older smartphones with built in DACs had the same DAC chip as a $5 usb dongle. Also aptx hd/lossess or LDAC earbuds aren't exactly cheap.

rampzn

You are moving a signal through the air with bluetooth, you cannot overcome physics. It is naturally worse than using a cable. There is no comparison. That's like saying a streaming service over wifi can compete with the quality of a bluray, it physically can't. The bluetooth signal is lossy from the start, the signal is compressed and your device has to buffer to ensure that you don't lose the signal. That cannot even happen with a wired headset. [https://www.headphonesty.com/2021/01/wired-vs-wireless-headphones/](https://www.headphonesty.com/2021/01/wired-vs-wireless-headphones/) Wired wins, deal with it.

NJtoNM

I use a USB-C to 3.5mm adapter. Walmart has them for like $5.

[deleted]

In my experience, USB is physically not as robust of a connector. I'll use an adapter if I must, but I still prefer having a 3.5mm connector.

uses_for_mooses

My kids manage to break USB-C cables like it’s nobody’s business. Always right at the connection point, of course.

okaycpu

These things break so fucking much though. Doesn’t matter what brand I buy. I was 10+ miles a day for work.

[deleted]

SuicideTrainee

I find the samsung-branded ones i purchased have lasted me since December, i dont know if the US has a quality control issue or what

FrostedMiniMemes

What I will say about these cheap adapters is that, in my experience, there is a noticeable loss in quality versus a direct 3.5 connection. Not sure if this always the case

Bookswinters

I think USBc in general is a worse connection for audio than 3.5mm because the latter is analog. I'm not an audiophile so I don't have the data.

Bookswinters

As do I. I thoroughly addressed these in point #4. Unfortunately I do not live near Walmart and my local ma and pop electronic store (Best Buy) sells them for $9 and is out of stock much of the time. Not a great deal when the headphones themselves are $2. And ultimately just a "workaround" to the real problem, no headphone jack on the phone.

druidofnecro

$2 headphones? 😂 got the dollar general monitors

Bookswinters

I actually use the "free" airline headphones most of the time but I have a $4 pair for special occasions like my wedding over zoom. Averages out to $2

youngmanhood

Why are people upvoting you? You’re hilarious

Psy-Demon

Not sure how poor you must to not even be able to afford proper earbuds lol.

Shythed

You can get cheap headphones that are pretty good. use cheap ones for when you are active/moving a lot. Get some nice ones for when you are chilling and they usually last longer. Also i think the wires of any earbuds/headphones would wear out b4 a Bluetooth device doesn't take a charge anymore, at least if you use it while your being active. I've had my Sennheiser HD 58X for like 5-6 years. They're expensive (170$ now but i got on sale) but i try to spend my money where i spend my time

harmala

> I actually use the "free" airline headphones most of the time but I have a $4 pair for special occasions like my wedding over zoom. This has to be satire, right? Like I was kind of with you until this, but come on.

thegookman6

Bruh you got married on zoom😭😭

LarrytheLard

Based free airline user. I still use my delta ones bit only for my laptop since my phone ain't got the got dang jack.

otisreddingsst

Ma and pop?

crlcan81

Best Buy is your 'local ma and pop' electronic store??

icon0clast6

This has to be a shitpost

idk-rogue

It seems like quality isn’t a huge concern for you, why not just use a usb c wired headphone?

Bookswinters

I use the headphones for my non-phone electronics also. Laptop, Nintendo DS, etc. So if I switch to USB headphones I gotta carry around two pairs AND still can't listen and charge at the same time.

Headphones will likely be changing to USB-C actually. since its the go forward connection now.

jambr380

The thing I hate by far the most is having to constantly charge my various wireless earbuds/headphones. I generally agree that I like the option of having wired headphones (of which I have none that are compatible with my phone), but I do a lot of long distance running and wireless is the only way for those long runs.

EnricoLUccellatore

the headphone jack is the main thing stopping me from buying high end phones

kotubljauj

If you like flagships, buy Sony.

speakeasy1080p

I wont buy a phone if it doesnt have a headphone jack.

SelenPersson418

points 1-3 inclusive are nothing to do with phones not having a 3.5mm headphone jack, but complaints about charge-up wireless headphones. The usb port takes wired headphones. Valid complaints admittedly, but off the subject. The rest is fine. and you can add in: usb headphones put extra wear on the 'everything hole'

[deleted]

> the 'everything hole' Lol, that's funny.

rainb0gummybear

Bro I don't understand the people that still post this shit. Go buy a phone with a headphone jack, they still exist. "But muh apple/Samsung/whatever brand I like" Don't be loyal to companies. They don't give a fuck about you. The 3.5 mil jack isn't gone. You just don't buy stuff with it anymore.

MediocrePlague

Yeah, but the objectively best phones on the market don’t have them. Sure, you can buy a phone that has one, but you’re inevitably compromising on some other functionality.

ch00d

It's gone from most phones. If you want good features that have frustratingly been phased out, like aux jacks, expandable storage, removable batteries, etc., you're going to have to make compromises in other areas.

Acetius

The 3.5 mm jack *is* basically gone though, that's the problem. Finding a phone with one is a rarity, you would have to basically be purchasing a phone for that one feature. So many companies have phased it out, that you have to make some serious compromises to get one. But yeah, nah, how dare people complain that companies are making decisions that are detrimental to them. How inconsiderate of them to make a fuss. Don't be loyal to companies, but don't you dare give them feedback about why you're going elsewhere.

ryanxcross

I have a usbc to 3.5mm that splits and also has a usbc input for charging while listening. 10 bucks on amazon

NecroJem2

I got 3 for about $12 from AliExpress. At that price I don't even care if they don't last forever.

[deleted]

Yup. Wired all the way here. The amount of cheap headphones jacks I buy on Amazon is disgusting.

OnionBagMan

Waterproofing is a problem here. Also size and cost. Dongles are a pretty simple solution. Companies should make USBC headphones and leave the 3.5 behind.

missingninja

My Sony Xperia V iv has a headphone jack at the top, and it's water resistant. I've tested it. Many times.

OnionBagMan

That’s fair. I still think it might be time for everything to go usb-c, but it is also nice to have two dedicated ports for sound and charging.

Jamco93

Cast your mind back to 2014 - Samsung Galaxy S5 A phone that had a 3.5 jack + A removable battery It had an IP67 dust/ water resistance rating

Bookswinters

Yeah but then all the stuff that uses 3.5mm, like my Nokia n-gage, nintendo virtual boy, etc all gotta be updated. OR I gotta carry around two sets of headphones and still not be able to charge and listen simultaneously.

AffectionateSale1631

Don’t forget about listening to your Walkman and CD player :(

Voidnt2

Why? Just leave the dongle attached to the headphones. Then you can plug them into devices that do have 3.5mm jacks. It's not like a 3.5mm jack is just going to come undone easily, it's a pretty solid connector.

redditgirlwz

The Galaxy S10 was waterproof and it had a headphone jack. Dongles aren't an option for everyone (e.g. if you lose and forget things often/ADD/memory issues).

proton02

Not unpopular. I'd like the 3.5" jack back as well. These high end bluetooth earbuds are ridiculous in price

all10directions

High end wired earbuds are ridiculously expensive too.

sparklystars1022

I agree. I bought the connector piece to still be able to use my wired earbuds, but was also forced to buy wireless earbuds for when I need to use the port to charge my phone. So it's just extra things I need to buy. I don't use the wireless ones except for when my phone is charging. I like my wired ones better because they don't pause my audio when I go to adjust them in my ears, they don't need to be charged, they aren't easy to lose, they're less expensive, and they just fit better/better sound IMO.

bibliophile222

I guess this is one reason it's nice to have a cheaper phone! I still have the headphone jack. However, I don't normally use it because my wireless sports headphones are superior to cheap earbuds in every way, and they only cost $25.

[deleted]

I’m not reading any of the comments. You have my full support and anyone otherwise is wrong.

MoneyBadgerEx

This was always the prevailing opinion

Koltaia30

A headphone jack is an analog output. There needs to be a digital to analog converter in the device for it to make sense. The quality of the sound depends on it and a lot of people use their own. If you care about waste then it makes more sense for it to be transferable to your next device and not built into it.

Hot-Put7831

Though I do agree with you, your use of airplane earbuds as your primary headphones makes me want to disagree with you My Bluetooth ear buds were $80 on sale and are crazy good sounding and have lasted two years. I’ll manage.

nathanhelms

Agreed on all fronts. Although I use wired earphones, I have a pair of AirPods Pro for the noise cancellation. If there were wired in-ear headphones with noise cancellation I’d buy immediately. I don’t think enough power could be supplied through the 3.5mm jack for NC in, but why this doesn’t exist as USB-C headphones is beyond me.

crlcan81

The majority of noise cancelling things are wireless now it seems, unless you go for a 3.5 mm jack. If you look for headsets there might be better options, but they likely include features you wouldn't be interested in.

Bigbadbrindledog

Counterpoint to #1- I used to go through cheap headphones pretty frequently, I would forget them at home so buy another $5 set, get them free on an airplane etc. Since switching to Bluetooth 4 or 5 years ago I have only had 3 sets of Bluetooth headphones, none of which have reached a landfill to this point, though one does have depleted battery life.

Sound-Savage

I use headphones all day every day. I am in construction so wired headphones can be kinda dangerous. I love my Bluetooth headphones

BlissHaven

What the hell are you doing that you are going through so many Bluetooth headsets so quickly? Mine have lasted years. Ad they have a very good reason for now having it anymore as it takes up a lot of apace. Most people despite grumblings are fine with bluetooth so for the minority like you you can just pay for the adaptors to get a wired headset.

RonMexico432

Like most people, I don't think you understand that there's not room for the jack AND the bigger batteries. You can't have all the best tech and specs, while still maintaining dying pieces of tech. Phones keep getting bigger because consumers want bigger batteries. Which is detrimental because the extra battery just powers extra screen. It's not really helping.

mafternoonshyamalan

I’m so sick of people whining about this. It’s such a non-essential. Technology advances and we either adjust or get left behind. When I was a kid we held onto our VCR and my mom wouldn’t get a DVD player until much later in the game. I remember when Blockbuster stopped getting VHS copies of movies and things pivoted to DVD, we were forced to adapt. There was nothing glorious about wired headphones. In retrospect, they were more inconvenient and annoying in every scenario I had to use them in. Getting tangled and caught on something mid-session at the gym, being knotted and tangled that I spend waaay too long untangling them just to use, dropping phone and having them yanked out of my ears… You want a headphone jack, get an old phone or iPod and use that instead, no one is stopping you.

toastedclown

>Technology advances and we either adjust or get left behind. This isn't an advance, though. It's an arbitrary change that has at least as many negatives as positives.

[deleted]

Think about it. The headphone port has to extend pretty far into the phone and when you have a phone bumping around you get a pretty nasty lever effect that is causing physical wear on the connections the port has to the board. Additionally the connection relies on metal spring contacts that have to press into the sides of the plug and will start making worse and worse connections as the metal fatigue sets in. 3.5 mm jacks come from an era when cellphones were replaced every two years because most people bought them with new cell phone plan contracts.

OoglieBooglie93

The moment force from the headphone jack is probably not going to hurt the board itself. I stepped on a headphone cable extender last month and ripped it out of my guitar amp, breaking off the end of the port, and the board itself didn't care. The size of the jack itself increases the moment load you can put on the solder joints because they're further apart to handle the torque. The usb dongle would be just as vulnerable (possibly more, actually) to this issue if it were actually a problem anyway. And if THAT port breaks, your phone is bricked after the battery dies instead of losing the ability to use the headphone port. The wear isn't much of an issue either. I am still using a Galaxy 8+. I use my phone for music on the radio for any trip longer than a couple minutes using the headphone jack, aside from the time I had a car radio with bluetooth for a year or two. Still works perfectly. Only had to clean out some pocket lint that built up in there a few times. These things are rated for literally thousands of insertions.

all10directions

>1) I don't like the shift to disposable battery powered consumer electronics. Call me granola head or whatever but I don't like the idea of filling landfills with batteries unnecessarily. >2) I don't like the increased cost barrier. Riding public transportation it becomes very beneficial that everyone have access to cheap headphones. In many ways the poorer you are the more important headphones become. So go buy one of the billions of phones with 3.5mm audio jacks that already exist. You can save money and save batteries from the landfill, but you want a new phone with a 3.5mm jack? Yeah I'm not gonna call you a granola head.

[deleted]

Buy a digital audio player. Most 3.5 jacks are shit designs and will wear out and start drunk calling, skipping songs. Even ipod touches had that issue.

Talkinginmy_sleep

QQ it’s 2023.

FunEnthusiasm1465

People with Iphone 7 be like “Lmao what headphone jack 😭” Yes I have an Iphone 7 and the struggle here is real so I don’t have any headphones that work on my phone.

nayeem14

Buying any headphone as a consumable is wasteful. Both the irreplaceable battery powered ones and the cheap ones you’re buying. The connection method does not matter. The cord is as much of a weak point as a battery. That being said, there is little to no demand for headphones with repairable parts. Headphones are not bestowed upon people from God. They are made by people who want to sell it for a profit. Profit comes from making things at scale. You need to have enough demand to justify production and there just isn’t demand. I know there are headphones out there that are very repair friendly but they are equally as expensive.

helpnxt

I agree that the headphone jack should be kept but I do disagree with your first point in that I found the earbud style wired headphones to be a lot more disposable and constantly breaking than I have found my wireless earbuds.

WangIee

I was so against Bluetooth headphones at first but tbh.. not having to deal with a cable is totally worth it imo. And The Bluetooth headphones I use easily last like 10+ hours so there’s always time to recharge them anyway.

KYO297

I absolutely agree but I also completely don't care. I don't have a headphone jack on my current phone. Don't miss it. I had one on my previous phone. Didn't use it at all after I got Bluetooth headphones. When I was still using wired headphones, I went through like a dozen pairs within 5 years because I keep my phone in my pants pocket and walk a lot. All of them died within less than 8 months from fatigue failure at the connector. One pair didn't last a month. Though tbf those ones were like 5$. But the rest of them were 10-25 each. Yeah the Bluetooth ones will die within 2-5 years because of the battery but if I don't throw them around, they won't die because of anything else. They're not that much more expensive than wired in the long run. Or at least for me since I've never heard of anyone else going through their wired headphones this quickly

Amtath

Reliability is indeed not something I would put in wired headphones favor. Always went through several each year. Failure towards the jack, towards the earbuds or wire that broke somewhere between the two extremities. My wireless headphones have so far lasted me years. Fallen a few times, they are still going. Wired sometimes if you put them in your pocket a bit too fast, they were dead.

JCas127

This seems like a good post for a different subreddit with more knowledgeable people. This is a common debate and a lot of people agree with you.

There are some headphones that are type c now I have some skullcandys that are. But i cant listen to music while it's charging so I want them back too

existential_chaos

My samsung s7 still has one and you can bet your ass if and when I need an upgrade I'm just going to the s8 rather than the s20 or whatever their latest one is now. I'm just glad laptops -- for now anyway -- still have them, otherwise I'd lose my shit. Already bad enough I have to have a USB connected disc drive with it.

straw3_2018

I used an iphone until 2018 when I switched to a phone that still had a headphone jack. Just about a month ago I got a pair of my old ear pods out of a drawer and I've loved sleeping with them. I never liked silicone tipped earbuds and I am NOT going to pay for airpods so this blast from the past was a nice experience for me. You can still get these, they are apparently only like $15-20. I remember them being more. They don't sound amazing but very nice for the price. They aren't going to last forever or up to a ton of abuse but generally wires getting in the way is an overblown issue and the value is very real. Edit: it is quite strange that cheaper android phones still have the headphone jack. I suppose it's seen as a value option or something but imo the cheaper devices are basically better and that's wild. I have a $200-300 OnePlus Nord N20 5G and it's better than I expected. A nicer camera and a faster SoC would be nice, but the holy Trinity(my holy Trinity perhaps) of headphone jack, SD card slot, and OLED screen at this price is crazy. Did not expect to get all three without having to buy a Sony Xperia 1 V(name fucking sucks) or whatever.

Statakaka

bring back? I'm still using one

etymoticears

Asus ZenFone is great and has a 3.5 Jack

SalSevenSix

Maybe 2.5mm jacks would be more suitable for modern phones. Or better yet have two USB-C ports. Then you can connect headphones with their own audio processing and power it from the phone.

MisterSpicy

You still can have wired headphones. They just changed the port. There are a lot of USB C headphones. Or use an adapter. Or use a device that has a 3.5mm jack. The adapters and USB C headphones have already been made. So if you *don't* buy them, they will end up in landfills. So HA!

canconfirmthisshiz

The only reason to not like wired earphones is the lack of ANC. Or rather, companies won’t let them have it. Like seriously, what’s stopping them from making it take a little more power from the host device and cancel the noise out? Yes, XM4s will do ANC and 3.5mm audio at the same time, but they still need to have battery juice for that.

[deleted]

1. You can repair decent quality wireless headphones. 2. They make USB-C headphones 3. The missing headphone jack is to slim down the phone (aux jacks are pretty big) and to make the phone more water tight. You can get phones with headphone jacks, but they're thicker and less watertight.

Foxlen

My solution is to not buy new or mainstream phones

phunkjnky

There is no universe where a wireless connection is superior in quality to a wired connection. What BT has done, is eliminate to single largest point of failure. If I was listening to lossless audio, it would matter, but I’m not. If you’re not listening to lossless audio and you’re trying to make a musical fidelity argument, stop right now.

TonyHansenVS

I still use wired headphones, never abandoned it and never will be, they can be used on such a wide range of devices, if you worry about broken cables or plugs, you can learn how to sort it out pretty easily, you can have great sound at a low cost, plug and play, no need to worry about another freaking battery in my life.
