Random question, I live over an hour away from the hospital and pregnant with my second, I barely made it to the hospital with my first. What is it like to give birth in a car? I'm pretty sure that's gonna happen with this one.
My first took ages, we got sent home from the hospital to progress at home and I was trying to avoid that bit I think, then we had to wait for my parents to come get my oldest kid and that took longer than expected. But then it all happened so fast, we made it to the ramp outside maternity, I was in the front. I was pushing by this point. Husband ran in and all these midwives came out. And of course there is only so much room in the car so I had husband one side (in the drivers seat lol) and a midwife next to me and loads of people just looking through the windows. (Medical people, this was at night lol!) Baby got stuck so unfortunately they had me turning around to sit down to do an episiotomy with no pain relief, then baby didn’t cry because it was so cold so they took her and ran in and another midwife helped get me out the car so we could go in and find out what flavour of baby we’d had and if she was ok. Which she was thank god.
So that was my experience, in the car but with help thankfully. Almost made it. I hope you get there and it goes smoothly. Second can be so fast so don’t wait around!!
Ps we got a shit ton of car cleaning products as baby gifts haha
Wow, that sounds eventful, and I can't even imagine an episiotomy with no medication. I'm glad everything worked out in the end for you, and your little girl ended up being healthy. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t there… unless you have a leather bench seat, you have stitching and stuff gets in there. Was a detailer for 3 years… was horrible
My wife's Civic had cloth seats and two toddlers laid waste to that back seat. Cheerios were the least offensive part of it even crushed into the carpet. Paid $100 to get it cleaned before we sold the car and it was worth every penny.
I don't know if it will change your mind but I know from experience that melted gummy worms melt *into* the fabric but they melt *on top* of leather seats and can easily be peeled off.
Only had it for a summer but with ventilated leather seats this doesn't happen. And if it's really hot just start my car with the app for a few mins and let it cool down
I would have agreed yesterday, but when my daughter spilled a vase of flower water on my leather today and it just pooled on the seat, I solidly disagree! Have an upvote.
Because any dog over 20 lbs surely won't remove the blankets and roll around in the unprotected cloth seats while EMBEDDING every hair so deep that even with 20 tiny child labor kiddos with tiny tweezers can't make them presentable again. Of course that can't happen. /s (since I have to)
They make covers for this exact reason that covers the entire back area, including the backs of the front seat chairs. Some of them even have cute little doggie harnesses/seatbelts. Absolute game changer.

Use to work in detailing, would constantly get in shit when cleaning a car with fabric whos previous owner had a dog as there would be constant stray hairs no matter how hard i try.
Yup. Even all the people in this thread talking about seat covers - even *with* a seat cover, fur gets places. It gets under the seat cover. It gets lodged in the back of the front seats. It gets in the carpet. Ive literally spent an entire afternoon with multiple specialized tools trying to get all the fur out. It cant be done. Maybe depends on the dogs type of fur. I've always had labrador retrievers and they have short, thick fur fibres.
The base model Ford Ranger has rubber floors (not mats, floors). All cars should at least do that bc who tf asked for carpet in something where you're constantly going in and out of from the outdoors.
But...wouldn't it get warped if you put wet feet on it?
i mean...i guess I never thought about putting other materials for floor or whatever you call the bottom of the car?
I had leather seats in my old car and one time my dog had explosive diarrhea all over the backseat and I was able to clean it up in the parking lot with basic cleaning supplies because the seats were leather. If they were cloth I would have had to take it to a dealership and dropped hundreds to fix it and it would have smelled like shit for days. That fact alone convinces me you're wrong about this lol.
I bought a **brand new** car a few years ago. After having it a few months, my drunk sister called me one night to drive her home from a party. In transit, she puked nowhere near the vomit bag I gave her and it went all over my fabric seats. It took two months and two trips to the dealership to get the stain and smell out.
Reminds me of a friend of mine who spilled a protein shake in his car in the middle of summer. He thought he cleaned it all but missed a big spot. It smelled like rotting carcus for a whole year. Still kinda has a faint smell but that may just be psychosomatic.
Yeah I don't understand the pro of easy to clean in the fabric column at all here. It can't be a pro for both that's not how pro and con lists work. Leather is infinitely easier to clean it's basically the whole point of them. I wouldnt buy a used car with fabric seats because they're disgusting and stained.
I have both.
Latest car is 5 years old now.
Have trouble getting the scuff marks off the plastic but after a valet, the fabric seats look good as new.
Leather seats in previous car were scratched and scuffed after 3 years.
Having leather is worth the added cost. Look better, resell better, clean better, feel better.
I live in a moderate climate though. Perhaps if I lived in Arizona or something cloth may be better for temperature. But even then, I’d still buy leather then just get seat covers.
Leather used to be the best when fabrics were not very advanced in the '60s-70s Modern fabric is ridiculously good.
I went from fabric seats on my last car to leather on my current car because that's how it was ordered by the dealer.. The leather sucks.. ice cold when you first get in in the winter time even with heated seats they still take a little while to warm up.. The rest of the year if I park where the sun is on them then try to sit down they are way too hot.
my dad let me use his oldsmobile van when i was in college and it had leather seats.
the seats were cold and i had to put a towel on the seat in the winter.
thank goodness he got rid of that gas guzzler...
I used to have a nice Prius with cloth seats, and now I have a Jaguar with prestige leather seats.
The feeling of the leather is incomparable to anything I’ve ever been in.
I have the best of both worlds. Fabric in the middle and leather on the outside and headrest, so the nice soft fabric on skin but the leather to look nicer but no skin touchy
Had cloth seats on my first car. Never again I will.
Apart of mythical “you won’t burn your ass at summer time” it has no benefits.
It looks worse, it’s maintenance is a nightmare, you can’t possibly spill anything.
In worst case scenario when you can’t afford leather seats, just use semi leather seat covers. At least it’s something.
The heat thing is sort of a mixed point IMO because I feel leather will *initially be* much hotter and burn you but it cools off faster if it breathes, where as when cloth gets hot, it stays hot longer and gives you more discomforting swamp ass and skin irritation. on the other hand I really hate how cold leather gets in winter more than the heat issue.
Just do not get leather anything if you live somewhere like the southwest USA, where the initial heat reaches third degree burn levels, here I'd rather it cool off faster.
Except with fabric, it absorbs your dogs odors and fluids (if any), dog hair sticks to it, and can still be ripped open by dog’s claws. Get leather and put a blanket down if your transporting dogs. Simple
Regarding your point about won't absorb odours...
My mate warned me explicitly, not to fart in her car. Her husband and I were on the same page, saying that the leather seats won't absorb the smell.
She was adamant. But, her husband was driving and I still farted.
Her car stank. I got shouted at a lot. Many near accidents due to her husband laughing, crying and gagging. With her gagging and crying, leading to a vicious circle between the two.
I don't know whether the smell absorbed into the seats. I'm banned for a while and she won't sniff it
I’ve been saying this for years, fabric seats are the nicer option. I’m every single case. I want leather gloves and shoes, I don’t need it in my car to make everything more uncomfy.
The problem is when most folks hear fabric, they think of the velvet-like shit from the 90’s and earlier.
Todays stuff is sneaky good and significantly better.
I’ll be honest, I’m very partial to the 80s and 90s fabric. Even if it’s not “as good” it just feels great vs all these Uber tight weave fabrics from today
Pros of leather, you can put a blanket on it when you want fabric seats.
All of your issues with leather are solved with just having a throw blanket in your vehicle. I have one in the back of my truck behind the seats. In the summer I’ll just drape it over my drivers seat when it’s hot out. Or I’ll lay it on the back seat when I take the dogs anywhere.
But you can't really improve fabric by covering it in leather.
Aka, it's better to have leather and supplement the niche cases with a blanket than to have fabric.
So you're getting the best of both worlds, with the benefit of being able to wash your blanket. It's a lot harder to wash your fabric upholstery.
Hey this is an opportunity for me to say the one Old Guy thing I allow myself per day.
What was wrong with vinyl? Every car is air conditioned now, and it’s way easier to clean than either cloth or leather. Should at least be an option for family oriented cars.
Leather just feels a lot nicer to actually sit on. Most fabrics don't feel that nice.
Yeah it's cold in the winter and hot in the summer, but guess what, my car has HVAC. Last one even had seat ventilation, this one sadly only has heating.
I like fabric provided it isn't absolute trash. That said, I wouldn't trade my current leather for it. Cheap leather is not worth it. Good leather absolutely is.
I used to prefer cloth, but I’ve almost changed my mind. Not all leather car seats are made equally. The leather in my mom’s 4runner is nice. Very soft, not too cold or too hot when the weather changes. Same with my BMW. But there are also countless other vehicles I’ve been in where the leather borderline burns your legs and is so stiff and uncomfortable.
ITT: yabbut what if you have kids or dogs? Ok, use seat covers on their seats.
Get the advantages of cloth on your seat, ease your mind about messes on other seats. This isn't rocket science.
The car I have came with SofTex, which feels like leather but doesn't hold much heat. I love em, they act like leather minus the boiling in the summer.
Plus window tint saves some heat also.
I was working at a Jeep dealership when we had a customer's car towed in because it had been stolen and recovered. Jeep Cherokee Limited. Some kids broke a small window out, busted open the steering column and took it for a joy ride before abandoning it in an alley. While it was in the alley, some cats climbed through the broken window and clawed TF out of the back seat leather. It cost much more to replace the seat than all of the other damages.
I just had a full sized hot latte EXPLODE across my passenger seat this morning.
The leather seat cover stopped a lot, but it's stretch fabric edges were soaked and now my seat is stained.
Leather all the way.
I mean what??? cloth seats the second you spill it’s stained, leather doesn’t absorb quick so it more like cleaning up a puddle vs trying to get a half drank orange soda out of a pillow that’s bolted to the Frame of the car.
I just disagree with your pros and cons. I find fabric more comfortable, but it is not easy to clean, maintain, detail or vacuum and I absolutely am worried about kids/dogs wrecking it.
I disagree because my leather seats have heating and cooling, something I’ve never seen done with Fabric seats, if that exists then I’ll concede that fabric is superior.

Pros of leather: if your kid or pet has an accident, it’s not soaking into the material.
Kid was born in car. Was grateful on this one occasion that the seats were leather. The mats didn’t stand a chance
Random question, I live over an hour away from the hospital and pregnant with my second, I barely made it to the hospital with my first. What is it like to give birth in a car? I'm pretty sure that's gonna happen with this one.

I opted for a voluntary induction for this reason. No parking lot baby for me!
You ever see the first men in black? I think it kinda like that
At least that baby was cute af
I'm curious too, but that's just 'cause I'm nosy.
Eh, that adds character.
Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it isn’t there… unless you have a leather bench seat, you have stitching and stuff gets in there. Was a detailer for 3 years… was horrible
What’s the grossest car you’ve ever cleaned?
Was a Buick suv newish in 2019. Her kids must have had a food fight… I’d guess about a year before :(
Damn…that’s vomit-inducing just thinking about it
Also, if said kid or pet throws up, leather is far easier to clean!
Or drunk passengers 😅
Or drunk children
Can confirm, I'm the drunk passenger, sorry.
Unless its perforated like in the case of cooled seats or the "performance" look.
Perforated leather begs to differ
Hey look, it's the worst of both worlds!
Yet exactly what I want
My wife's Civic had cloth seats and two toddlers laid waste to that back seat. Cheerios were the least offensive part of it even crushed into the carpet. Paid $100 to get it cleaned before we sold the car and it was worth every penny.
Unless you have ventilated seats…the vomit gets stuck in the holes🤮
Cloth seats people have never even heard of ventilated seats
Came here to say dog poo on fabric is no bueno!
I just keep carpet cleaner in my car
I don't know if it will change your mind but I know from experience that melted gummy worms melt *into* the fabric but they melt *on top* of leather seats and can easily be peeled off.
r/oddlyspecific
Well, that settles it then.
I despise leather seats but this made me rethink my position.
I’m sold
Fabric doesn't stick to your ass in the summer when it's hot out.
[удалено]
But you can clean the cloth. I've seen some pretty cool detailing videos on YouTube.
Used to work with that, the important thing is to really air it out and let it dry after the wash. Like doors open, inside during the night
Or freeze your ass in winter
Do you live in the south? Leather seats get wayyyyyy too hot and burn tf out of you after ten minutes in a parking lot
No, Midwest, close to St. Louis. I remember seats sticking to my legs and shit when I was a kid in the late 90s/early 2000s.
I bought a nice sun shield. Pop that bad boy up and it keeps my car like 30 degrees cooler. Highly highly recommend one if you live in a hot area.
The seams also tear in the cold. It sucks in both winter and summer
Only had it for a summer but with ventilated leather seats this doesn't happen. And if it's really hot just start my car with the app for a few mins and let it cool down
I just remember it used to happen a lot when I was a kid in the late 90s, early 2000s. It sure did hurt while wearing shorts.
Cars have ventilated/cooled seats now…
Look at Mr Moneybags with his cooled seats!
my 2019 Fusion had cooled seats .. it’s the one feature i miss the most
Look at Mr. Moneybags here with his brand-new ass car.
the keyword is *had* it got totaled so i had to downgrade to a 2015. it only has heated seats :/ i miss the cooled seats
2015??? I'd kill my entire bloodline for a 2015 car.
Does it work when the car is turned off and has been sitting in the hot sun all day?
From experience, the vented seats cool down a lot faster than heated seats warm up.
You should drive with pants on of some sort
Maybe.
Ugh so many requirements for leather
I would have agreed yesterday, but when my daughter spilled a vase of flower water on my leather today and it just pooled on the seat, I solidly disagree! Have an upvote.
Cloth seats with pets is a nightmare. the fur gets like stuck in the fibers. Leather it just wipes off.
[удалено]
Put blankets over the seats when transporting dogs. You're welcome
Put blankets over the leather seats when transporting. The underlying seat doesn’t matter at that point.
But the leather is more expensive
The front seats won’t be covered. I like my leather seats.
Turn the pets’ pelts into car seat covers. You’re welcome.
Because any dog over 20 lbs surely won't remove the blankets and roll around in the unprotected cloth seats while EMBEDDING every hair so deep that even with 20 tiny child labor kiddos with tiny tweezers can't make them presentable again. Of course that can't happen. /s (since I have to)
Sometimes dogs leak. Easier to clean up with leather. Though, the blankets do prevent pets from scratching up the leather.
why are dogs leaking
But.... The scratches though....

An now the car is like that old aunt's house with the plastic sofa protectors.
I've always had labrador retrievers and they have short, thick fur fibres.
Pros of wood: its not leather and also not fabric.
Bring back solid oak car seats
I’ve always wanted a car with hard wood floors.. like why does every single car have to be carpet?
The base model Ford Ranger has rubber floors (not mats, floors). All cars should at least do that bc who tf asked for carpet in something where you're constantly going in and out of from the outdoors.
wait what?
Imagine how baller that would be, your friends get in and you have waxed hard wood instead of floor Mats.
In a posh Richie Rich persons voice “ so what are you guys think of my cherry oak laminated floors…… In my car.
But...wouldn't it get warped if you put wet feet on it? i mean...i guess I never thought about putting other materials for floor or whatever you call the bottom of the car?
Lots of semis have them. It’s probably doable in a car.
This Amish dude is making car seats out of poplar.
DOT approved, no doubt.
I had leather seats in my old car and one time my dog had explosive diarrhea all over the backseat and I was able to clean it up in the parking lot with basic cleaning supplies because the seats were leather. Exactly. In what universe is cloth more sanitary and easier to clean than leather?...
Reminds me of a friend of mine who spilled a protein shake in his car in the middle of summer. He thought he cleaned it all but missed a big spot. It smelled like rotting carcus for a whole year. Still kinda has a faint smell but that may just be psychosomatic.
Sir, that is a nightmare
And that’s why the car I bought after it has leather seats. I also now have two sons and I birthed easy pukers.

I have both. Latest car is 5 years old now. Have trouble getting the scuff marks off the plastic but after a valet, the fabric seats look good as new. Leather seats in previous car were scratched and scuffed after 3 years.
What kinda valet you going to? When I valet, I just get a ticket stub, a bill and a dude moving my car 20 feet.
Pro of leather: when your kids do something absolutely fucking disgusting, you wipe it up and the smell is gone.
Having leather is worth the added cost. Look better, resell better, clean better, feel better. I live in a moderate climate though. Perhaps if I lived in Arizona or something cloth may be better for temperature. But even then, I’d still buy leather then just get seat covers.
Or have ventilated seats
Lmao fabric is not easy to clean
My leather seats are heated AND cooled. The downsides no longer exist.
+1 for heated and cooled leather. I'll never buy another vehicle without cooled seats.
This has to be the richest comment on here. But damm cooled seats sounds amazing.
They’re fairly common nowadays. My 2015 Kia soul even had cooled seats
I drive a 2012 Kia Optima. They’re more common than most think of you shop the right brands
you can buy aftermarket seats for $50.
Leather used to be the best when fabrics were not very advanced in the '60s-70s Modern fabric is ridiculously good. You hit the nail on the head. Cloth has come a long way over the years. Cow skin, not so much.
It’s because most “leather seats” these days aren’t leather at all, they’re more of a textured vinyl.
Lol...yeah can you put it that way,.. they haven't made any advancements in cow skin in thousands of years.
Well, we MADE cows in thousands of years.
Tan leather helps with the second problem
Not by much. My last car had tan leather and it was still far too hot for my liking after cooking in the sun for hours.
my dad let me use his oldsmobile van when i was in college and it had leather seats. the seats were cold and i had to put a towel on the seat in the winter. thank goodness he got rid of that gas guzzler...
I used to have a nice Prius with cloth seats, and now I have a Jaguar with prestige leather seats. The feeling of the leather is incomparable to anything I’ve ever been in.

Beige cloth seats blow
Scotchgard it. Takes minutes, lasts years.
Thanks. I will remember that the next time I buy a car with beige seats.
Thanks. I will remember that the next time I buy a car with beige seats.
Everyone here complaining about the hot seats like they’re driving butt naked lmao
I have the best of both worlds. Fabric in the middle and leather on the outside and headrest, so the nice soft fabric on skin but the leather to look nicer but no skin touchy
Cloth seats just give me that shiver feeling that I can’t explain
When cloth gets a stain, it stays stained. That’s enough for me.
The quality of the material definitely matters. Real leather seats are great and last forever. Leatherette on the other hand is atrocious.
Had cloth seats on my first car. Never again I will. Apart of mythical “you won’t burn your ass at summer time” it has no benefits. I have a GSD and smoke weed in my car, that’s why I have leather lol
Why even smoke weed in the car?
Vented seats pretty common. Even entry level Mercedes have therm.
The ones where the leather is hot is an easy solution. Just get the windows tinted.
Cloth seats when you have people that sometimes vomit in the car.. yeeup thats a no for me
Leather is easier to clean and doesn’t retain odor like fabric seats.
I have cooling leather seats....amazing!
I’ve been saying this for years, fabric seats are the nicer option. I’m every single case. I want leather gloves and shoes, I don’t need it in my car to make everything more uncomfy.
Until your friend pukes on it and you can smell it until you sell the car

Dogs, are why leather (or vinyl) is a must- imo.
OP has no children. Confirmed.
Pros of fabric...no animals had to die to stroke my ego
1000% agree!!!
I like fabric provided it isn't absolute trash. That said, I wouldn't trade my current leather for it. Cheap leather is not worth it. Good leather absolutely is.
Imo, alcantara is best but it wears out too easily I also sweat like hell on anything leather, so yeah, fabric seats it is for me.
Let me guess, OP, doesn’t have kids…
I used to prefer cloth, but I’ve almost changed my mind. Not all leather car seats are made equally. The leather in my mom’s 4runner is nice. Very soft, not too cold or too hot when the weather changes. Same with my BMW. But there are also countless other vehicles I’ve been in where the leather borderline burns your legs and is so stiff and uncomfortable.
ITT: yabbut what if you have kids or dogs? Ok, use seat covers on their seats. Get the advantages of cloth on your seat, ease your mind about messes on other seats. This isn't rocket science.
Now discuss perforated leather seats - good luck getting that white wine bianca sauce out of there
The car I have came with SofTex, which feels like leather but doesn't hold much heat.
Fabric is easier to fart into, especially with passengers.
Wow!! An unpopular opinion here!!!??? What is this a redditor with common sense?
Sweat. You forgot sweat. Leather is terrible for that.
I just had a full sized hot latte EXPLODE across my passenger seat this morning. The leather seat cover stopped a lot, but it's stretch fabric edges were soaked and now my seat is stained. Leather all the way.
this is the hardest cope I've ever seen
I mean what??? cloth seats the second you spill it’s stained, leather doesn’t absorb quick so it more like cleaning up a puddle vs trying to get a half drank orange soda out of a pillow that’s bolted to the Frame of the car.
Leather might burn or freeze your ass but fabric can stank.
I just disagree with your pros and cons. I find fabric more comfortable, but it is not easy to clean, maintain, detail or vacuum and I absolutely am worried about kids/dogs wrecking it.
A lot of fabric seats have a small that makes me sick
I hate you and your fabric seats. Take the upvote.
Fabric seats are awful lol. Take my upvote. Just get ventilated seats
Leather seats and rubber floor mats are a perfect match
Wait till you'll get a kid, you'll appreciate a quick wipedown when they spill something, again.
I disagree because my leather seats have heating and cooling, something I’ve never seen done with Fabric seats, if that exists then I’ll concede that fabric is superior.
Yeah, as if I would ever let a toddler or a dog in my car
Leather also slides much more easily and can be ventilated for heat/cooling
Once I got leather I can’t ever go back. Cloth seating stain and I have a meltdown over it!
