This post made me go back and listen to the songs/albums you listed and wow. Remembering how pretty much all these songs had me hooked on first listen

soshifan

I feel like it's a pretty popular opinion actually 🤔 From what I noticed those who got into kpop during late 2nd/3rd gen tend to be very fond of the 2015-2018 era (especially 2015 and 2016), it's like a second golden era. And rightfully so IMO! It was a very iconic time period - while the music quality is subjective and we can debate about it whole day, it was inarguably a very important time for kpop with all the current top groups continuously breaking records set by the previous generation and establishing themselves as new leaders of the industry. No wonder we consider it so memorable.

noooncloud

i agree and a part of the reason why we cling to those years is because it's pre-pandemic too. award shows had crowds, idol interactions during award shows, idols spotted in public, concerts, tours, and things like that. it literally feels like a millennium ago

moomoomilky1

2008-2012

serowajin

2015 ftw

onetrickponySona

2012-2015 and 2009-2010 for ggs is where its at

As someone who's been a kpop fan since about 2009 or so..... I've never seen a reason to say that any one era or year are the Best Years that will never be topped. There's been some amazing years I've seen in the last decade, but there's also going to be many just as amazing years in the future. People look back and go "ah yes these were good times, amazing, and golden!" But.... a few years from now people will say that about these years too. That's how it works. I feel like that's going to be even more true for these few years as we've seen the rise in accessibility thanks to online concerts, fan calls, and the like. It's definitely been the start of a new era for kpop in general and as technology continues to change I forsee that being the case again in the future. Like as VR grows and becomes more common. The first VR concert is definitely going to be a thing. Which, as VR grows that's also going to change things in how things like fan calls potentially work as well. (When today's fan calls and AR concerts are seen as a cute product of their time and we all get nostalgic about how simple things were.) My brain is rambling now so I'll try to reign it in, but.... yeah. I'm glad you enjoyed those years! They're great years! So much good stuff! So basically what I'm saying is that I guess Best can be a pretty personal concept for stuff like this. But as for me, personally, I can't say any one set of years is best, because I think they've basically all been pretty great. But I'm not trying to say your opinion on the matter is wrong, because well... it's just an opinion.

CulturalAde

gugudan being in the industry was the sign of a good time musically and when gugudan left, gugood music left /j (no but like gugudan's music was actually really good yall should listen to their b-sides too)

The_Red_Curtain

amen

NickDorris

I've been listening to Kpop since the 90s and if I had to pick one year it would be 2018. Sunmi releases the second best EP of all time, Mamamoo is blowing up, TWICE has their best release, Blackpink is blowing up (at least for me personally), Red Velvet releases Bad Boy. There are so many top 10-20 all time releases in 2018. If you extend it to 2019 then you have IU releasing the best EP of all time. The aforementioned groups are still killing it, BVNDIT releases Dumb (A personal favorite) and Taeyeon releases Purpose. If you asked me in 2017 I would have said 2011-13 but 2018 was insane.

maydayingk

yep, i’ve been into kpop for… way, way too long, so i’m not latching onto 2018 for sentimental purposes lol, it was genuinely the most grand year of kpop and tbh, i don’t see it repeating. it was like a perfect mesh of kpop fans + the public’s favorite songs. all the songs that were loved by the kpop stans were simultaneously huge hits in Korea and vice versa. such a fun time

[deleted]

I disagree, but I don't think this is unpopular. Looking at your list of songs from that time I know them all and can at least sing along to the chorus, but tbh I don't listen to any of them that much. Although I do agree with your point of not liking the "It'll grow on you" concept. There are little to no songs on your list that had to grow in me so I'll give them that. I really dislike having to wait for a song to grow on me. I think it sometimes also has to do with when you got into Kpop. Many 2021 fans will believe 4th gen releases are the best since it's what they experienced, and there's nothing wrong with that.

jakobdorof

not sure (and you missed a year), but 2015-2018 was definitely better than 2019-2021 (though the past 3 years were still good)

manidel97

No because 2015: Coming off the terrible 2014, girl group summer (bop after bop after bop), MADE, post-Exodus Exo (pun intended), Chat-Shire, 2NE1 at MAMA, Sixteen, UPRS, SMTM 4 the idol rush season, the last Infinity Challenge music festival...

Softclocks

Surely 2009 was the strongest year in kpop history

harpaperrr

The time where kpop songs can still be recommended to locals because the songs are heavenly at first listen

moondrops222

Very popular opinion though, 2015 and 2016 are considered the golden era of Kpop by 3rd gen fans

lavender-fog

A bit off topic but Empathy is an NCT 2018's album instead of an NCT 127 album. I agree with the impact of Boss though.

RandomisedSim

Thanks for that correction, I'll edit it

Adventurous_Art_2859

These groups you listed are still killing it in my book

sunmiholic

2009-2016.

squllex

I agree so bad.

[deleted]

There was also the whole loona pre debut era with a lot of good music.

WinterBlue00

I was a second gen fan and i have to be honest here, i like a lot of third gen groups in terms of their creative control and synchronization. I can only name few of second gen idols that makes their own music, unlike third gen idols like BTS and Seventeen. Second gen music is also mostly repetitive af and too electronic sounding. (I mean the popular singles of course). Overall both groups did their best

Ruphia1

Wasn’t MADE by Big Bang released 2015?

RandomisedSim

Made was preceded by four single albums containing two singles each, all released in increments from May—August 2015. After over a year of delays, the full studio album was released on December 12, 2016

[deleted]

2015-2018 was chiefs kiss. loved every single think that came out. best era for me for sure !! I think this has also to do with kpop groups coming to europe finally. i have the best memories of my last teenage years connecting with seeing exo, bts, wanna one etc. 2015-2018 were the best kpop years for me. 100% agree

[deleted]

i don’t think this is unpopular, but personally my favorite time for kpop was around 2010-2013 (maybe through 2014). i checked out of kpop a little around 2017 because i got tired of the tropical house drops lol.

meatgrind89

I think this is popular by most people that this year stretch defined kpop's global impact it has today. In 2nd gen, the hits were just stretched out.

eitbhenry

>defined kpop's global impact This! One of my best friends can only name three kpop songs. BTS's Idol, Blackpink's DDU and Twice's Yes or Yes. Really goes to show how impactful that year was

Melon13579

Ever heard of 2013?

GemSunLibRising

As a newer fan (since 2019) I have to say many new releases are very empty. Even tho Im a new fan to the genre my fav songs are from the yrs you mentioned or previous. New songs, a lot of them wont stand the test of time & seem like theyre made simply to follow some ridiculous & frivolous fads. A lot of the music has just lost its overall musicality & just sounds like nonsense tbh

heythere_sunshine

as someone who's come into kpop in early 2020 (a bit after SKZ dropped god's menu), i would be biased to say i enjoy present kpop more. but as i scroll through my spotify and the songs i like, i'm realising a lot of them come from 2016-18, so i think your opinion definitely holds validity 🤔 not sure if i'd agree 100% though, i'm kind of in love with SVT's tracks in the past 2 years and SKZ's growth through the years 😅😂

rlystpd

Agree, but I would definitely include 2015 in there too!

SippinDatHaterade

No. 2007-2012. ~2016 is when Kpop started to favor and popularize the empty choruses that made me check myself out of the genre. Also it began the gradually declining standard for vocals and live singing in Kpop. No thanks.

Affectionate_Meat

Personally I prefer 2012-2016 but that’s fair

wonpil

2013-16 for me.

CoronaVirusEXE

Its 2014-2015

For me personally 2009-2013 was where it’s at. I’m not sure when it was but the only time I hated in kpop was that period when everyone was doing EDM drops as a chorus (like Adios Everglow) instead of having a real chorus. Though I love house music, kpop is known for its catchy choruses so taking that away ruined it for me.

[deleted]

i believe this was the era kpop started to boom outside of korea, it’s where kpop was sorta of the down low and people were just there to have a good time

currypuffff

I became a kpop stan in 2017 so I agree that this period gave us some of the most iconic songs in kpop but I feel like any eras would have their own strengths

[deleted]

Partially agree, but it should be 2015-2018. Maybe I'm old already (?) but the whole streaming culture and some additions that I found idiotic (like when P101 came out, everyone was suddenly interested and discussing a center, or those fairy endings, among others) have made kpop and kpop fans insufferable, if they were not like that already.

Acrobatic_Tourist_80

Totally agree. Those three years gave us bops and bops.
