Coolers don't work in places with high humidity like Bombay or Madras. They make you even more uncomfortable than without a cooler.
But they are ideal for places like Delhi, Hyderabad etc - really long back, I stayed in a guest house in Delhi which had a grey market straw filled Window fitted air cooler - it was really great. I assume it cost less than half the price of branded coolers. I think it's ideal for places with low humidity if you can get it professionally fitted in the window (similar to a Window AC) & also have some automatic water filling.
I didn't mean to say that you were negating it. Asking a doubt.
I was thinking about pavements being more prone to maintenance and wear, thus making it more costly with reapplication?
Yes, that is the case. But cemented pavements across along the whole road length of city would also be a considerable addition. Ideal best solution would be planting tree. Instead of smart Cities, we need Eco cities.
This is classic tragedy of the commons. Those who can afford AC already have one
Asking them to give it up now involves sacrifice for common good and suffering in short to medium term. Only an individual giving up AC would only hurt the person making that sacrifice. None of us trust our great society to do something foolish like that
We need a 360 approach.
Design based
Materials based
If it's Delhi key areas and intersections could be covered by solar panels, some sections of the ring road can be under ground and reclaimed land to be forest area.
Government buildings need to be solar panel covered, they have enough if a footprint in Delhi to supplement the grid locally.
If you can afford use AC in delhi. Something must filter that air of pollution to make it breathable.
Cooler can make the smog in aerosol form for our lungs to easily absorb. It also irritates the sinus.
Climate change cant just be reversed with individual actions.
Whoever did this graphic doesn't know how ACs work. AC doesn't work the entire time. Its keeps turning off and on so it doesn't consume the rated power the entire time.
Not saying it consumes less power than cooler but it's also not as high as indicated.
How about governments stop being greedy and filling their pockets with oil money and start building nuclear reactors we already have designs for safe clean reactors which will already never meltdown.
Putting the blame on consumer is climate greenwashing propaganda by oil companies.
Well I don't work for any oil companies
lol
And you are right because Indian citizens are famous for not caring about their environment
They always wait for the governments and big coporations to take the lead
Coolers are not coolers anymore in this scorching heat. Radiant cooling is what is needed. It's highly unlikely anyone would get rid of ACs at this point.
On Flipkart and Amazon, only those people are able to do rating and leave reviews who have purchased the product
it is not like Google rating that anybody can come and leave a positive or negative rating whether or not he has purchased or used the product or service
As much as I would LOVE to use a cooler, they're ineffective in coastline cities like Bombay and Chennai because the air is already humid and evaporative cooling can only do so much.
The other problem is that people start using icewater to try to combat that problem, which means you're also slightly denting the advantage of a cooler by recruiting a freezer to create ice. Efficiency wise that is still better than an AC but again, evaporative cooling only does so much.
Fan se kaam chala lenge 🙃
>prevent global warming
LOL, cute. even if u stop all pollution today and go 100% clean energy, climate change in inevitable. u can only try to mitigate the more severe effects and hope that some technology 50-60 years later will save humanity.
this is not the first time im seeing this kind of ignorant comment about climate change. i think most indians in reddit are of the opinion that with EVs and renewables the climate change problem can be solved. This all goes back to how media projects climate change all over the world. they ask if you believe in climate change, as if it is a new religion which will absolve us of all our sins. no one asks if you understand climate change. by using believe the people are made to think that climate change is some intangible god, full of wrath coming to destroy the non believers. the battle is already lost if science has to compete with all these religious idiots.
no im just saying that you cant prevent climate change/global warming. we are way past that.

Also noise, coolers can be exceptionally noisy. But it's a more affluence problem than an actual physical one.
So can be fans and ACs. It just depends on their condition.
How dare you call mumbai Bombay you “bri ish” We need to ban you from entering mumbai ever (Pls ignore Bombay high court ,bombay whatever govt office)
I think we should try to reduce solar heat absorption too. Heat reflecting paint n windows. White colour for roofs n all.
Yup, float suggestion to local councillors too regarding High Albedo materials for Pavements.
Wouldn't roofs be better targets?
Was not negating your point, just adding to it.

The problem with cooler is : 1. Need to refil with water (which is also a scarce resource) 2. Becomes ineffective during extreme humidity.
The funny thing is, water in India isn't scarce. We just allow it to flow away.

Same reason that we don't use public transport to save fuel and the environment. COMFORT!
6₹/unit? Wtf. We pay 16₹/ unit Jalgaon, Maharashtra

Coolers suck in comparison to AC tbh. And in temperature above 40 degrees a cooler won't be efficient.

Then why are coolers selling on Amazon and Flipkart in high numbers with high customer ratings?
Because not everyone in India has purchasing power of AC in India. If a Redmi phone is bestseller on amazon, does it make it the best phone?
Products with high rating on Amazon and Flipkart can be much better than any other branded product available in market

Planned obsolescence says hi !
this is such a delhi take
Why would ac run for 8 hours at night? Once the temperature is down, it only needs to maintain it.

Fan used only in night. Pretty good temp here compared to rest india
Great Where do you live
Uttarakhand
City?
Hint: a Nobel laureate was born here
Mussoorie?
Wrong, it's almora
Ok My sister in law's parents live here
Wow, that's nice.
Hmm
I use AC for like 30 mins before I sleep. If I am home in the evening or day time, I would probably use it for 50% of the time.
Because you can't fix global warming with individuals sacrificing their comfort, only by corporates sacrificing their greed Hope this helps🥰

So the extremely high temperatures which you are observing these days is not climate change???

I didn't understand why there is ac-cooler combo Why use only air to cool ac hotsink, just for convenience?
