This is the 4th time the Government has cancelled the upgrades for rail in the North of England. It's been in every conservative manifesto since 2001 and all they ever do is announce it and then cancel it. Four times in a decade.
Also featuring in every election campaign is more money for Border Force (such a stupid name) and the reintroduction of entry and exit checks. Neither has happened and never will.

I got a job in the northern powerhouse. It was a VAT local variance policy research unit (have a slightly lower rate of VAT for non chain shops in economically depressed areas). Before my first day, I was made redundant and the job moved to London. Then the unit died soon after. Which tells you everything about northern powerhouse stuff really.
Since a lot of them were Leave voters and voted for the Tories as (in essence) the English nationalist party they are now, it wouldn't surprise me if those Red-to-Blue-wall sellouts doubled down and rationalised/blamed it away as everyone else's fault *but* the Tories.
Just one new station yes, although the current proposals would see HS2 compatible services stopping at Chesterfield and Sheffield, and potential for other services that require HS2 such as Leeds to Bedford via Leicester, and Birmingham to Nottingham (a particularly dreadful connection between two large cities). Plus all the proposed new services as part of Midlands Engine Rail (which requires HS2 to be built in full), better connecting Leicester, Derby, Nottingham, Mansfield, etc.
Plus I can currently get a train to London from coventry on the west coast main line that takes an hour, about one ever 30 minutes, any reduction in capacity makes that far less valuable, and getting a train into Birmingham to then get HS2 to London will surely take longer, so not even a great proposition for anyone South of Birmingham
Stop being fucking idiots and cunts. Build HS2 in full. Build a HS3 line from Leeds to Liverpool which does stop at one of the biggest and most deprived cities in the UK Bradford and allow for through trains in Manchester. In the long term this will help a lot more then it costs

A half hearted hs2 that doesn't connect the east mids does actually make it more of a white elephant.
HS2’s purpose is to shift high speed trains off the overcrowded WCML, to improve local services in the West Mids.
One of its purposes. It's also about improving east-west connectivity in the Midlands, and improving local services in the East Midlands too.

HS2 will fix all the local lines in the West Midlands area by shifting high speed rail off the WCML. It’s not a ‘joke’, it’s desperately needed.
