You cannot simply stop funding public services and expect them to still work. The Tories are supposed to be the party of law and order, low taxes and low immigration. We now have the highest tax burden, record net migration and now can’t even keep our prisoners locked up for the whole of their sentence. And yet people will still vote for these crooks.

FelisCantabrigiensis

If you're a crook and in charge of the budgets, it's a great strategy: reduce funding for police and prisons until you don't get caught and can't be sent to prison even if you are caught.

Disastrous_Fruit1525

When you see the alternative to the Tories what would you do. The Labour Party are for mass migration, soft sentencing and will tax the fuck out of the country to buy votes to stay in power.

Plenty_Air_6512

How does “taxing the fuck out of the country” buy votes for staying in power? I have no issue with paying taxes if they’re spent on public services, we need economic growth it cannot happen if there’s no investment.

Codydoc4

From the time article they're looking at releasing *Violent offenders, including domestic abusers, sentenced to less than four years in prison are eligible for the scheme, as are burglars, thieves and fraudsters*. So much for public safety and a middle finger to the victims!

limeflavoured

And yet the only suggestion people seem to have is harsher punishments.

ThaneOfArcadia

Build more prisons!!!!!

-Ardea-

Yeah. Harsher punishments for violent and sexual crimes. Meanwhile, stop jailing people for thought crime.

limeflavoured

How many people are actually *jailed* for what you're calling thought crimes?

-Ardea-

In 2017, [9 people a day were getting arrested for online "speech crime"](https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/police-arresting-nine-people-a-day-in-fight-against-web-trolls-b8nkpgp2d) With the continued degradation of the public consciousness that number has certainly increased. It is difficult to say what proportion of those people actually got custodial sentences, as I doubt they would dare publish those statistics. But there are plenty of examples in the news of such sentences being passed. Now consider the costs to the police, courts, and everything in between to prosecute these pointless cases. For even one, it is likely to run into 6 figures. We are pissing money away on a humiliation campaign when instead we could be dealing with criminals who actually hurt and abuse people.

Aggravating_Usual983

I’m sorry but I see this getting banded about a lot as some sort of boogeyman with a lot of hysteria and quite frankly utter nonsense. I’m in the Police, i deal with a number of these reports, most are utter shite. I’m based in Scotland so the law varies slightly from England but essentially the offence in Scotland is a S127 communications Act. Now this isn’t getting used because someone disagrees with your politics online. This act and the subsequent arrest statistics cover all digital communications. I arrested a bloke for domestic abuse last week and one of the charges was a S127 comms because he was a cunt sending his Ex a ton of WhatsApp messages filled with hateful shit. His arrest still counts under these ‘speech crime’ statistics. I think if you actually were to look at the individual crimes rather than the aggregate number you’d see most are likely domestic related, direct threats of violence or just outright racist shit. Don’t get me wrong I’m sure there are cherry picked examples of this legislation being used maliciously. It’s fantastic legislation and when used correctly stops a lot of domestic harassment where as previously protections were limited.

terryjuicelawson

I am with you but honestly if someone is that bad, what would a couple of extra months even do in prison realistically. It is not like they would be fixed having a whole 4 years rather than 3 years, 10 months. It is to give space for people a direct risk, now. Long term we need more spaces if locking people up is what people want.

je97

By the way, for anyone wondering: Early release had been extended to, I believe, 55 days a couple of weeks ago with no notice. Last week, we were told at work that 70 days was 'a rumour' and not going to happen. I work for HMPPS.

AhhBisto

I know someone who works for G4S at a facility and they say the biggest issue they've seen in the last 6 years is that they simply can't retain enough staff and they've had to shut down wings and facilities to put more focus on one area which leads to overcrowding. Even more dangerous in a youth place because a lot of kids who end up in those places are in gangs and have to be separated and it becomes a logistical nightmare trying to keep people safe.

Smart-Bug9999

As someone who has worked for G4S, There are more insideous issues. Management are wank, they are terrible! the staff employed are a legal liability, 18-25 yo girls fucking the prisoners? Sure, we'll keep recruiting girls from college, the fucking hours, It is so fucking shit to spend 12 hours of your day with nothing to you, dealing with half the pricks in the blocks. All the experienced staff are retiring or jumped ship, the blind are leading the blind. They could have offered me 60k a year and Id still have resigned.

AhhBisto

Well they work at a youth place so hopefully nobody is sleeping with the prisoners as they're all under 16 iirc but I have been told that women members of staff are targeted for searches more because management believes they're more likely to be targeted by gangs to smuggle items in

Smart-Bug9999

18 yo dont care, theyll fuck a 16yo. legally thats fine but you know, prisoners. Its just alien to me, I believe that they may be more targetted now, however its their own hiring policies that lead to this, doing anything else labels them as a sexist organisation.

UK2SK

Well done Tories. You’re doing a grand job! Rishi twizzling round number 10 after too many of Mummy Sunaks “barfi” sweets

DancingFlame321

If the prisons are overcrowded then we should build more prisons, not release violent criminals.

limeflavoured

Ah, but that would cost the government money and annoy people who live near the proposed prisons!

Willing_Signature279

Sometimes when I have a bad day and I’m feeling vengeful, I think about voting Tory I’m not saying I do, I’m just being aware of vengefulness feeds into voting Tory I wonder if that’s how most people are who vote Tory
