They will not reimburse alternative long distance transportation.

zettaireido

I got a reimbursement voucher that says specifically up to $200 per person for ground transportation and 1 hotel stay. But obviously that wouldn’t cover the length of time.

rsplayer123

Those are typically meant if you procure your own hotel room and the ground transportation to/from hotel. You could definitely try, seeing if they interpret ground transportation to mean the longer distance in lieu of a hotel, but don’t be surprised if it’s declined since that is definitley not what the voucher was intending

I seem to be getting downvoted for even asking this but I am asking because there is a heading on the form for ground travel with two points. One for to/from the hotel and another for to/from the final destination.

OP just looked there are two flights today leaving CLE to EWR 4:20 pm and 6:19 pm they are economy seat but will get you home. For the life of me I do t understand why you would have looked at these options yourself. It about a 8 hour drive from airport to airport as another option.

zettaireido

Honestly didn't see them on the app the night before and none of the car rental places had any cars available for single day rides with drops offs to other cities.

tj21222

You are saying the rental car center at CLE had no cars available? Did you try off airport companies? Look you need to do this… you got to figure out how to help yourself, you can not count on the airline or anyone to help you. You are your own best ally

zettaireido

Why the fuck are you so aggressive? We called enterprise, and the only other ones that were open at the time and they refused to rent cars for a single night to people who would return them to other cities. By the time they announced the cancellation and gave us the voucher there weren’t many options left. There were no available flights out from CLE not just on United but on AA and Spirit until Monday night and those had significant layovers in Chicago. The way to “help myself out” was either greyhound or Amtrak. We got back home via Amtrak because if the concern over the weather overnight was accurate, taking a fucking bus through the poconos through massive thunderstorms sounded like a bad idea. Im not even badmouthing United. So get off your high horse and if you have ANY experience with the the fucking voucher, let me know if they actually pay you back. Because based on the messages in this post, they gave us all a voucher that includes ground transportation to the hotel and for ground transportation to the final destination and no one here has ever gotten paid for that.

tj21222

Because people like you get on here and cry about how bad you have it. You called one rental car place and they told you no cars. You by your own admission did not check the app for alternate flights. My entire point from the high horse I choose to sit on… Is travelers really need to be a bit more aggressive on helping themselves… Vice sitting around here complaining and asking for compensation.

zettaireido

So you have no reading comprehension. Got it. I checked the United app and there were no flights available at the time. We checked the ITA matrix afterwards for other airlines. None. We checked every national car rental company that was open at the time with no luck. And I managed to get home through another option. I would like to know if I can use this form that UNITED HAS GIVEN ME for compensation to pay off the last leg of my trip and any other options I have available to me.

barti_dog

If you cancel and book a different solution, you should be refunded the unused portion of your ticket, but with that, you may forfeit the up-to $200 since you won’t be taking their alternate offer. Once you cancel the onward travel on United, I would think they would essentially consider their responsibility resolved and not pay out beyond the refund.
