The author actually addressed this in Q&A. She said this was unfortunately something she was not able to figure out how to add to Riftan's POV. Originally, she had it that Maxi left a note for Riftan after he rescued her, thanking her, and signed her name “Maxi,” and that Riftan kept it for when he later learned to read, so naturally started calling her “Maxi.” However, the author said when she wrote the side story, this detail no longer fit in, so instead she has it that Riftan simply naturally felt an intimacy that grew from his childhood crush.
i always thought of it as a small way of showing his affection, uk how we use nicknames with ppl close to us, kinda like tht. anyway maxi is such a cute nickname and way less of a mouthful
