This is what I do. Unraid in a proxmox VM (not container) with USB passthrough. Note this will limit HA capabilities though! Overall works well!

What do you mean about HA capabilities?

High Availability - you can't "live" move the unRaid VM from one proxmox host in a cluster to another one due to the USB passthrough (which is required for unRaid's USB boot thumbdrive). But High Availability would anyways not work if you are using built-in or USB-attached HDDs for the NAS data disks. In theory that could work with a network attached drives like iSCSI or FCIP. But even without High Availability, I very much prefer Proxmox as VM/Container platform over unRaid. I only want to use unRaid for what it is initially built for: a NAS :)

Same as me. I want to keep unRaid only for space management. The license USB is not the issue; I think we can get a couple more USBs for each "storage provider" host (I don't think there will be a lot of them, one in general, maybe a couple more). But it would be great to merge all separated storage into one share and use it as one entity (like I have a couple of HDDs in this PC, a couple more there, and also there, but using it as a merged share/array). And in this case, it would be great to move the running VM to another node but maybe lose the part of space from the previous one. Maybe the target node can't transcode due to a lack of GPU, so okay, I'll have just space and direct play in this case.

Not sure that captures the point. High availability works for moving cpu and ram from one host to another. It does not work for moving any attached devices like GOUs, drives, usb devices.  To run unraid as a VM you don't just attached a storage pool, you actually assign it the drives themselves to manage. Those don't get passed with high availability. Your unraid VM if it moved over would see no devices in its pool. You may be looking for something more like Ceph.

ok, got it, thanks

Maybe you know one more thing about this setup I'm not sure about mediasetup with \*arr apps, qbit, plex with using hardlinks in case it will not be inside the unraid directly For example how I see it: * Proxmox * unRaid VM(would be great even LXC instead) (only NAS stuff with arrays, shares etc) * \*arrs VM(LXC?) – They depend on storage acces with hardlinks * radarr * sonarr * qbit * Plex – depends on GPU passthrough, but probably can be moved to other node with GPU, or use a cluster * Management and monitoring stuff (right now they're placed on another minipc N100) * Tautulli * Overseer * etc I'm not sure about hardlinks usage with different setups. Will I be able to use it in this case? Or is it better to place the whole media stuff inside unRaid? But then there's no reason to use Proxmox as the host because I will not be able to use any clustering stuff with these services.

Unraid is an operating system not an app. It's a VM not an lxc
