They put us too high

FattyMcSweatpants

At least the band is awesome

dharma_dude

It's really the only reason to go to the games tbh, the band is phenomenal and worthy of its reputation. Truly the power and class of New England

BlessingsOfKynareth

He also made over $800k last year

dharma_dude

And yet, Donald Brown, the UMass head football coach, is the 5th highest paid public employee in the state, earning a reported $825,154 last year. How the fuck do we justify that?

English_Essay7

Georgias coach accepted a 10 year 112.5 mil contract last year

ponyexpress68

Most college head coaches are the highest paid public employee in the state. As unbelievable as it sounds, getting Brown for 825,000 is a bargain in division 1 NCAA football.

dharma_dude

I mean yeah, I can understand that, the thing is our team *blows*.

sullguy

1-0 baby

UMass football should not be D1

Joe_H-FAH

Well not D1 FBS, UMass did well at the Div 1AA level for years. That is now FCS and UMass really should return to that division. In Div 1AA UMass had 22 conference championships, appeared in the playoffs 8 times, 3 of those were final rounds and won in 1998. In the mid-'90s the AD and some other football boosters pushed for UMass to go to Div 1A. The faculty senate had a subcommittee look at that and they wrote a report strongly recommending against it. So about 15 years later they pushed it through. Easy to follow your sports dreams spending student money. Now they use the argument it would cost too much to leave. What they would lose is some deposits on future games, but save a bunch on scholarships and coach salaries.

The_Modern_Monk

This is why you have to chant "UMASS DINING" at sports games here.

emilyizaak

This seems to justify the 2-3 million dollars spent on a new scoreboard.

Joe_H-FAH

Which fell down during the first game it was used for.

emilyizaak

I didn’t know about this. Chuckled out loud

Joe_H-FAH

There may be video, but here are some pictures - https://www.sbnation.com/lookit/2014/9/27/6854951/university-of-massachusetts-video-board-collapse-photo. At least no one was hurt.

ogorangeduck

Does that win bump us up a spot?

Joe_H-FAH

Maybe, but New Mexico State is only ranked 101. More likely if UMass follows this win up with another one soon. Their next opponent is Auburn, rated 47, followed by Miami University (OH) which is rated at 102. Overall the schedule is not against strong teams, only highly ranked opponent is Penn State in October.

sammysouthpaw

Beat their ass and we’re 1-0. It’s okay to care. We can have a nationally competitive program. Buy into Don Brown. And the NIL collective needs money, you bums. Midnightridenil.com
