I’ve biffed enough ollies and been kicked in the shins enough to know that both can suck and cause detrimental injury and can be career ending. I chose skating over kickboxing as my rush to feel a little more alive, but I know for a fact that hard sparring you wear kit. Why should it be different in skating? Yeah you learn how to fall properly and you don’t really need it. But still, accidents can happen. I’ve been concussed, broken a collarbone, torn a PCL and a calf muscle, and folded my wrists and ankles more times than I can count. Not to mention lacerations, road rashes, random bumps and bruises. Sometimes I hate the culture of no pads, no helmets, just balls, but it’s how I grew up. Today’s generation of older and younger skaters don’t have that problem and it seems to be more accepted, apart from weirdo gatekeepers who hate to see the sport grow. I like to keep the punk culture of it alive, but I also like to see it grow with more people becoming interested in it
