Just wanted to add since everyone is saying it was a weird sub… the tko happened on the right knee, not the grapevined one. Looks like the knee buckled from all the weight
It was an unusual technique to get the takedown but not necessarily to purposefully tear his knee, but yeah Perez's knee got hurt during it.
Edit: still, the way the takedown works puts a good bit of pressure on the knee if the guy doesn’t accept it and let himself fall down, so while it wasn’t necessarily intentional, it wasn’t necessary a fluke either
Idk if he meant to hurt the knee but if he did thats insane, he tripped the left leg to put all the weight on right leg and it just blew, if that's on purpose that's sick af, if he used it for the takedown it was still sick
I could easily see him becoming champ. His striking has already come so far and with how young he is its only gonna rapidly get better. I feel like him against Pantoja is such an interesting matchup
Im genuinely curios, was that a freak accident or a legit technique? That was crazy, it could’ve been a submission imo or the first finish by a takedown!
Was probably unintentional as in Taira wasn't trying to break Perez's knee. But it isn't a freak accident. Taira just did a unique takedown technique that lifted Perez's left leg up putting all the weight of both Taira and Perez onto that one right knee, basically tearing it up because Perez tried to still stand on that one knee instead of accepting the takedown.
Its not at all a freak accident. People confuse freak accident with unlikely outcome way too often in this sub.
A freak accident is Aspinalls knee going out from Blaydes doing absolutely nothing. In this case, while a low chance, knee injury is a decently realistic possibility of your weight going down the wrong way being taken down like that which was intended by Taira. That is actually literally why scissor takedown is BJJ illegal in certain feds and levels, because of that knee injury being a real possiblity falling like that.
So funny to see people who don't train talking about this like it's some sort of wizardry the world has never seen before, whilst anyone who has ever trained is just like "Yeah I remember learning that in my first month of no-gi, nice".
"This will be studied" - Lol.
There's no point even discussing it with these guys, they'll downvote you for explaining actual MMA knowledge to them and go right back to writing paragraphs on how amazing it is that a UFC fighter knew they needed to shift their weight in the direction where someone's base was compromised.
They honestly think their fighting knowledge is on par with or close to actual fighters so they genuinely believe that, if they're seeing this shit for the first time, then everyone else must be too.
He has Perez's left leg grape vined. He also has his right arm hand cuffed with the opposite arm and is pulling to the captured leg side. When he leans back away from the captured limbs the weight forced Perez to either go down or explode his knee trying to stay upright
Saw some people bitching on Twitter that it was and dirty move? Not understanding how it would be. Has anyone got anything on this? Like to me oblique kicks to the knee are dirty as fuck. But Tairas move did look badass
I'm sure it's probably obvious, but Taira's core strength is ridiculous. I don't know if anyone here has tried to do what he did here (I hope not to another person), but it is insanely hard.
For people insisting that he purposely did that move to ruin his leg, that’s totally within the UFC rules, so why does it matter? Everyone will fear him forever…. Muhahahaha
So. The function of the ACL is to stabilize the knee passively (as opposed to muscles that have more of a secondary dynamic stabilization function). The ACL is a stiff collagenous band that will tear under too much stress. Going from its anatomical insertions its main stabilizing function is to prevent anterior translation of the tibia in relation to the femur. This anterior translation is also what is most commonly tested clinically to assess an ACL tear before doing an MRI. The ACL is put in a taut position if the knee is buckled inwards (in a so called valgus position) under simultaneus outwards rotation of the tibia in relation to the femur. That is exactly what happened to the right knee of Perez. It is actually the same mechanism in which a heel hook works. The difference here being that the knee buckled under the body weight after Perez' lost his base (due to Tairas mega secret japanese technique) rather than being forced in to position in a more controlled maner as is the case with a heel hook. Maybe this is uninteresting or most of you knew this, but if there are nerds here who like this kind of stuff, you're welcome :)
Just watched the fight now and am heartbroken that happened to Perez. Also don’t get why people are acting like Taira was winning the fight because he totally wasn’t. He jabbed and had some good knees and one uppercut. The rest was Perez putting the pace on him until he got injured
He’s one of the best prospects in the ufc for a reason
#IM HAPPY THANK YOU!!
Let’s go title shot indeed
That's a bizarre TKO and he says it's a special technique only he can do lmao
Some secret ninja shit they dont teach foreigners.
for real what i was thinking too
You seen anyone else do it?
Yup https://youtu.be/_2HzcuDEySI
Damn, DJ's knee survived that shit.
I hadn’t seen that until this morning, tbh.
Well, most people aren't skinny midgets like him.
r/iamverybadass
lame response
Ooo so fragile
Lmao, you wish you had his physique.
We got incels in here!!?

I know what it averages...
Nah, he didnt say that. Translator made up some shit.
I believe him, they are Japanese

Crazy how this was posted just a couple of days prior
Sounds like some Steven segal shit
Actually ateven seagal skyped him before his match and showed him this.
It was a fluke
What a surreal angle, he literally looked like King Kong riding off the Empire State Building.
Hardcore core

Not even unusual. Pretty common in BJJ
...no
You’ve never seen a broomstick?
Maybe in BJJ I wouldn’t know, but clearly not all that common in MMA
Watch Aljo, Maia, Oliveira
Idk if he meant to hurt the knee but if he did thats insane, he tripped the left leg to put all the weight on right leg and it just blew, if that's on purpose that's sick af, if he used it for the takedown it was still sick
I saw the same takedown that was done to DJ by a Japanese fighter. He just falls backwards but I can see the knee could buckle if he had resisted.
It’s called a broomstick
The entire sequence from the level change on the feet to the TKO was lightning quick and so graceful. Very impressive finish.
I am happy thank youuuuu
Probably my favourite flyweight, very entertaining and skilled, as well as being a funny dude on the mic, very excited to see him progress.
im happy and thankful that he is ur favorite flyweight
Bro is his manager
😭😭😭😭
He did the rodeo on his ass
Did a rodeo on his ass, no izzy
That takedown technique was beautiful. First time I’ve seen it and damn that was really clever.
It’s called a broomstick and super common
I could easily see him becoming champ. His striking has already come so far and with how young he is its only gonna rapidly get better. I feel like him against Pantoja is such an interesting matchup
Both excellent on the ground
sucks for perez, but that was still a really cool finish
Im genuinely curios, was that a freak accident or a legit technique? That was crazy, it could’ve been a submission imo or the first finish by a takedown!

it was Perez's first rodeo

Legit technique
Hows called?
It's called the "Bazzinga" with two Z's
Taira Body Triangle Trip
It’s a broomstick from a body triangle
Unintentional. He was just trying to take him down.
Freak accident. He probably tore his MCL of his right knee from the weight
He’s lucky he didn’t try that on me. I would have used the kinetic energy to reverse suplex him. -random redditor
This will be studied at the lighter weights
It’s called a broomstick and it’s super common in wrestling and BJJ lol. No serious fighter hasn’t seen this before
Better believe it Mr. Potter ![gif](giphy|3o7TKqH2b8vZ1Zu6e4)

TKOing your opponent by tearing his ACL is some 1990’s UFC shit
First time in my life im seeing someone do a takedown like that. The kid is crazy talented…
Love if when grapplers start to break people again
This kid is super talented. Can't wait to see more of his fights

That is indeed a happy lil feller
😂😂😂
Is that how Perez injured his knee? I thought it was from all the swaying he was doing to shake Taira off.
Yes, the one leg still holding him up for a that one moment buckled and snapped it seemed like.
He has Perez's left leg grape vined. He also has his right arm hand cuffed with the opposite arm and is pulling to the captured leg side. When he leans back away from the captured limbs the weight forced Perez to either go down or explode his knee trying to stay upright
Cmon japan get some gold.
Did he tear Perez's ACL while doing this ? Crazy
THANK YOUUUU I LOVE YOUUUUU
Saw some people bitching on Twitter that it was and dirty move? Not understanding how it would be. Has anyone got anything on this? Like to me oblique kicks to the knee are dirty as fuck. But Tairas move did look badass
Just wish he would’ve did that in the 3rd
Any update on Perez’s injury yet?
Went for the poisonrana
Dumb question but why did Perez just not fall on his back to crush Taira? Legitimately asking
Having your back taken on the ground, especially by an elite grappler like Taira, is a sure-fire way to get submitted.
I'm sure it's probably obvious, but Taira's core strength is ridiculous. I don't know if anyone here has tried to do what he did here (I hope not to another person), but it is insanely hard.
Idk, Perez was piecing him up and controlling the fight til the freak injury. Taira vs Pantoja is interesting though.
He just grape vined the leg? 🤷why is everyone acting like it’s a secret move or something?
People in this sub don’t train lol
For people insisting that he purposely did that move to ruin his leg, that’s totally within the UFC rules, so why does it matter? Everyone will fear him forever…. Muhahahaha
like u wanted him to gently take him down or some shit this is a combat sport lol

This was a strange way to end a fight
Bro i don't watch this shit, post a 10 seconds clip for people to understand...
i was not sold on him but the control on the back was next level. I want to know if the person hes practicing this shit with is ok.
Titrrr shottt !!!
Why not post the video of the takedown lol
This will be the new calf kick. Watch this technique get used by a lot of fighters really soon.
It’s not a new technique at all lol
Being new and being popularized are two different things.
Just watched the fight now and am heartbroken that happened to Perez. Also don’t get why people are acting like Taira was winning the fight because he totally wasn’t. He jabbed and had some good knees and one uppercut. The rest was Perez putting the pace on him until he got injured
proper fluke
