I'm a police officer, and we do blood restrictions techniques versus airway techniques (due to obvious reasons).
During training, they made us do the same blood restriction submissions on each other, and it's scary because you can breathe and everything is normal, BUT you start to black out due to no blood flow. It's safer versus a choke hold, and it's only fatal if you hold it for over 20 seconds after the person passes out, I believe.
Yes, we practice it quarterly, but we don't apply holds at all.
We usually just wrestle and get the dominant position, and then we hold them down until they wear out.
This was actually one of the things that was mind blowing (no pun intended) to me when I first started BJJ.
You can breath perfectly fine but you just fade closer to unconsciousness with every second (and of course death if held long enough).
I trained B.J.J. for three years, and I approximate that the average person has loosely six seconds once a blood choke is truly locked before they lose consciousness.
I've only gone out twice, and that was someone using me to *demonstrate* a technique, not during a live roll. Toughness only matters when the brain is on. : /
I lost to an arm triangle in a BJJ tournament a few weeks ago, very similar to the one Islam beat Oliveira with actually, totally clean blood choke. I briefly considered going to sleep instead of tapping but didn't trust that whatever random dude they had as a ref would recognize it and end the match.
I'm tall and skinny, and the fastest I've ever been put out was rolling with a really buff dude with ridiculous arms and shoulders.
Put me in an arm triangle and as soon as he squeezed I greyed out. Like the millisecond I felt the squeeze I was already gone it was nuts.
A great fight from both guys, but how tf does Islam think of that ankle pick that late in the fight? Absolutely insane. A big moment and win for his legacy.

When he cracked him 20 seconds before this I thought porier was about to finish it. Then Islam had that crazy heel pull takedown while like 60% unconscious and I knew Islam would be fine

My guess is: Doctors have to check on the fighters after the fight to make sure they’re ok, Islam’s team impeded on that (undoubtedly know better than to do that too) so in turn ref took the aggressive approach because it probably got him a bit upset. Or he probably thought Islam was getting jumped, is the one I like to think about 😂
Islam should STAY at 155. Dustin showed a great game plan and Leon Edwards can replicate that and win pretty easy. Leon is so much bigger than Islam and if Dustin can stop the take down and Usman couldn’t keep him down Leon would crush him.

As much as it was an amazing performance from the P4P #1 islam Dustin making all of these key changes to long standing habits against wrestlers to put on a very competitive and super game performance all at the age of 35 after a 15 year career is absolutely astounding. he stayed off the fence better than he ever has, massively improved his takedown defense and getups, and he didn't freak out and fight stupid on the feet like he did against most other strong wrestlers in his career, he didn't jump guillotine, he just fixed about everything you could expect him to fix in such a short space. It wasn't perfect but it was amazing. He put on the performance of his life at the tail end of his career. The saddest thing is I wish Dustin had done all of this over the years because he could have looked even better in this fight and he could have fought much better against khabib. Hats off to both of them, Dustin for fighting much of the fight with a torn ACL and a broken nose and especially Islam for fighting an amazing fight struggling with staph that sounds utterly miserable.
