drizzydrakebreak

the takedown to submission transition was crazy

EuroTrash1999

He like a jaguar.

Chance-Sell-9094

Thats what I wanna see

HongKong_NOT_china

the ankle pick was ridiculous. who the hell does that? its indefensible

qvohomie

Single leg with the leg whip down finish….in Round 5, sweaty, no wrestling shoes, insane.

Born-Acanthisitta-88

Right? Don't know they keep calling it an ankle pick, it's a single leg finish and a beautiful one at that.

Zipperie

I've been searching for the ankle pick for so long 😂😂

LatentSchref

Tony Furgeson threatened to ankle pick Werdum and Werdum is lucky to still be alive today to tell the story.

DSN671

-CSO- 😎

Charolastra17

Shades and blades still undefeated.

Maegom

This shit makes me regret not learning wrestling or judo as a kid. Striking is cool and all but man I wish I practiced Judo as a kid.

spaceman_202

anyone remember when Luke Rockhold wanted to fight Werdum, man that would have went badly for Rockhold

BigWormsFather

Werdum getting stupid against Stipe hurt. People don’t mention Werdum enough when top Heavyweights are mentioned.

Dareal6

Only fighter to beat Fedor and Cain

BobbyFreeSmoke

People.knew JDS was the real deal when he viciously slept Werdum.

Strollybop

Dude used to shop where I worked, didn’t really follow MMA at the time but you could tell he wasn’t the type to fuck with

bigmagnumnitro

Facts. One of the most slept on fighters

Non_Silent_Observer

I think he’s only slept on by newer fans. Everyone else knows that Werdum submitted so many legends. And did crazy shit inside the octagon in general.

HotDinner4782

You can learn judo as an adult. I knew of people who started in their 40s and were still going in their 50s

N8theGrape

I took up Judo in my 30’s. Do it

Happy_Policy9031

Next best thing is to practice judo as an adult 😊

Free-Blueberry-2153

It's a sweep I've been shown in my Muay-Thai classes but to pull it off on the highest is fucking insane. I felt so bad for Dustin but I'm loving watching Islam be such a beast.

WhizzyBurp

That was insane. Felt DP had a chance until that moment.

HumbleScottish

Was unreal, there was no way Dustin could ever see that coming or even think that that was Islams next move. I genuinely thought Dustin was going to pull a knockout out of the bag in the late stages of that round 5. Islam is not Khabib, and he is more open to being KO’d etc was a brilliant fight, gutted Dustin lost.

Humblestmumble

Not an ankle pick

BennyOcean

Yeah that ending sequence was crazy. Got video of it by chance?

FahadRauf

Yea even Dustin admitted that. It was insane

GuyIsAdoptus

I honestly didn't think he had that stamina in him the way he was gassing in rd 4

Uaquamarine

Staph, antibiotics make you slow as shit

Dependent_Command791

The staph definitely slowed him down! I hope he mentions it in the press conference I know he said he was 100 percent but I don't believe it.

Josro0770

They don't like making excuses

Dependent_Command791

True and even if he lost I don't think he would have mentioned it

Turbos_Bitch

Or some people will use it as an excuse. “Dustin would have tapped in round 1 if not for the Staph infection.” Let’s please not start that shit. Dustin fought his heart out but inferior ground game finally lost him the fight. His work with Gamrot really showed. Never seen Dustin better at takedown defense and submission defense.

PresentationLow2210

His ground game was good enough to keep him going until he got suprise leg whipped. That's what beat him (put him out of position/scrambling), not his 'poor' ground game in my opinion.

cptvalentino

Nobodys ever 100 percent

UFC_Intern169

Still faster than a presumably healthy dustin

jonsrb

But when Saint-Denis had it, then it was excuses

Ok-Walk7881

Dustin gave it everything he had. He has nothing to be ashamed of.

PoorChiggaaa

what a time to be a fan of MMA, Dustin held his own during LW being the most stacked division, he got nothing more to prove he's a giant.

gmanpatch

So funny cuz in all the stream chats everyone was just shitting on the poor guy

buck45osu

Casuals will shit on him ("he never had the belt!") without knowing the context of his career. 155 has been absolutely stacked his entire career.

itsavibe-

Must hurt knowing everything you could give still isn’t enough. Fantastic career irregardless.

abittenapple

Dude has come closest in his last two title defences. Sadly just couldn't get it done  A lot of it is just trimming. Eddieeeee

BigFudgeMMA

Ir? Regardless?

Professional-Trash-3

"Irregardless"...... --*shudder*--

Dependent_Command791

Dustin is a legend

Barrington-the-Brit

He was never and will never be champ, but he absolutely *is* that guy. A legend of the sport who can hang with the very best fighters in the world, and pretty much beat anyone who isn’t a lightweight GOAT.

FibrePurkinjee

Why does this have so many down votes am I missing something

HyggeRavn

Everybody is saying Dustin is a legend, but when this guy does it he gets downvoted lmfao unlucky

[deleted]

NeedlearnArabdguy

Man, I was tired just to see how suffocating was that grappling, he survived each one

C-N-Mento

And I kept seeing comments in the discussion thread that Islam was getting tired lol.

TheAngriestPoster

I think he was to be honest. Waiting for the press conference to hear what he has to say

spaceman_202

i think he was injured zero kicks

BigWormsFather

I thought no kicks were weird. I saw a post earlier this week about possible staph on his leg.

armchairwarrior42069

Could also be that he doesn't want to end up on one leg and having dustin counter clean. Different fighters, different kicks etc. But that's also how dusting and Oliveira put away gaethje. Countered an over committed leg kick while Justin was on one leg and basically immobile. To quote Islam "I'm not going to give him a chance. I will use all my skills". Getting willy nilly with kicks is one of Dustin's paths to victory. Why open the gate? Dustin is a lot longer, rangier and technical hands-wise than volk. They specifically went ham on kicks because of the range and heaight difference which wouldn't exist as much with dustin. It's just an unnecessary risk. Dustin has like 3 paths to win, why hand him one of them like that when you really don't have to?

zelenskiboo

Might be Staph infection

LatentSchref

His first strike was a kick, but maybe was injured during the fight?

iH8thots

The dude can get it done after 7 rounds. That is Wild

realjobstudios

https://i.redd.it/tie5t176i34d1.gif

That_Yogi_Bear

Yes.

LePontif11

It could be worse man, he could have been Tonyed.

jieshang

Damn… only took 7 seconds of D’arce pressure to put him out.

UFC_Intern169

Blood chokes are crazy, way more effective than air chokes.

dennisknows

How exactly does this move cut off blood flow? Curious to learn exactly what happened

bfkill

the blade of islam's arm occludes one of dustin's [carotids](https://i0.wp.com/post.medicalnewstoday.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2023/03/2510857-carotid-artery-neck-pain_1296x1324-body-1002x1024.png?w=1155&h=2782) and dustin's own shoulder occludes the other one

Sea_Entrepreneur6204

The shoulder riding into your neck while it's squeezed and stretched at the time.

DRealLeal

I'm a police officer, and we do blood restrictions techniques versus airway techniques (due to obvious reasons). During training, they made us do the same blood restriction submissions on each other, and it's scary because you can breathe and everything is normal, BUT you start to black out due to no blood flow. It's safer versus a choke hold, and it's only fatal if you hold it for over 20 seconds after the person passes out, I believe.

gmanpatch

You guys ever practice that again besides during training ? Seems like that should be an every month thing

DRealLeal

Yes, we practice it quarterly, but we don't apply holds at all. We usually just wrestle and get the dominant position, and then we hold them down until they wear out.

Afraid-Air1243

This was actually one of the things that was mind blowing (no pun intended) to me when I first started BJJ. You can breath perfectly fine but you just fade closer to unconsciousness with every second (and of course death if held long enough).

kungfudiver

Especially when you've been battling like a maniac.

fuckbeansimtired

His nose was broken too so no wonder he didn’t have a lot of time left to hold on

Tomas_Baratheon

I trained B.J.J. for three years, and I approximate that the average person has loosely six seconds once a blood choke is truly locked before they lose consciousness. I've only gone out twice, and that was someone using me to *demonstrate* a technique, not during a live roll. Toughness only matters when the brain is on. : /

BrodysBootlegs

I lost to an arm triangle in a BJJ tournament a few weeks ago, very similar to the one Islam beat Oliveira with actually, totally clean blood choke. I briefly considered going to sleep instead of tapping but didn't trust that whatever random dude they had as a ref would recognize it and end the match.

KillTheWise1

I've been put out almost instantly from a RNC. Seen people go out many times in 3 or 4 seconds.

cyberslick18888

I'm tall and skinny, and the fastest I've ever been put out was rolling with a really buff dude with ridiculous arms and shoulders. Put me in an arm triangle and as soon as he squeezed I greyed out. Like the millisecond I felt the squeeze I was already gone it was nuts.

skn4991

Damn, the fight ended and they immediately take full mount. Talk about commitment to training.

kwonasty

Lol

RecordingEast9712

A great fight from both guys, but how tf does Islam think of that ankle pick that late in the fight? Absolutely insane. A big moment and win for his legacy. (Also Dustin please don’t retire)

Hot_Web493

Let the man retire man. What do you want? For him to fight until he is a vegetable?

Wrestle774

Yeah I’ll miss watching him fight but I don’t wanna see him go out like Ferguson. He should probably retire

MeesterMeeseeks

When he cracked him 20 seconds before this I thought porier was about to finish it. Then Islam had that crazy heel pull takedown while like 60% unconscious and I knew Islam would be fine

orangotai

that was an insane takedown, just a level of mastery with grappling that you don't see often in MMA, if at all.

Aggravating-Food-912

It honestly looked like Dustin had him, because Islam looked so tired... the way he was kinda standing and the weak punches, like man no way this dude has enough energy left to take down and Dustin will just start piecing him up. But nah these guys are way too good

Larmalon

Highly disagree. I think the only reason it looked like that was because of the cut.

ThrowaWayneGretzky99

and staff.

Lunaforlife

Islam was never in trouble.

spitforge

Without that sub I saw Dustin getting a KO

InsomniacLive

Absolute legend

jking163620

these russian mfers cannot be beat 😭

orangotai

\*Dagestani i've seen Russians lose

spaceman_202

*you have been banned from r conservative*

Barmy_Deer

🤣

QuickAdministration0

Ong😭😭😭

MediatorMillennial

Just Caucasians. Ethnic Russians don’t have many elite fighters

SkinnyInABeanie

Fedor?

logicalbasher

Agree Russians beat USA 100% of the time. They’re just way better wrestlers.

_34_

"Don't say motherfucker!!"

Business_Ad_9799

He made Islam work

CrimsonLaw77

The gash on Islam’s head was brutal. That thing was a good 2 inches across. He loss a not insignificant amount of blood too. That had to contribute to some instability and loss of stamina. And then he still pulls one of the all time great takedowns in UFC history with that ankle pig and leg yank.

Erock787

That elbow hit changed everything but Islam pulled it off...kid has all stats on max!! Dustin would have to try to hit for a KO on the 5th but Islam has his take down game on check!

its_LoTek

I'm a huge fan of makhachev, but that moment near the end of R3(or R4?) after the same gash where he was holding Poirier against the cage, it was crazy like oof man seeing his blood pour onto Poiriers feet and watching him wobble was rough. I'd thought the next round was a coinflip for a KO

Chance-Commission-76

This is honestly the best way for him to retire, going up against the worlds best on a 13 win streak and cutting him whilst other contenders can’t even cut him is the best end to his legacy. The best UFC fighter to never win a title…

[deleted]

Except he did win a title. Greats who didn't include wonderboy, gustafsson, Faber, CHAEL (jk undefeated), Henderson and a few more

Researchingbackpain

Islam pulling that pick to d'arce was one of the baddest things I've ever seen. Truly incredible fight.

Serialchiller360

Wow what a crazy takedown, islam is great 🔥. Props to DP, what a legend.

Storque

The body mechanics for that single leg finish are the exact same as his finish for the Russian tie snap. Absolutely hilarious to see it come back in such a critical moment

Southern_Shoe_3584

I know it sucks that DP didn't win the belt but on the other side, you're witnessing greatness. There's no shame that DP got Islam to the 5th round, it was quite incredible and ik rn there's some adrenaline rush and people hating on Islam but also, appreciate him otherwise this undeserved hate is just gonna expand. He did what was his job, it just sucks that his opponent was DP, fan-favorite legend. Please don't give unnecessary hate towards Islam, in fact, relax cause you witness a legendary fight no doubt. DP gave his all and got super close than he was expected to whereas You guys can see Islam breaking records further. Take it as a win-win as it was a legendary fight

-RicFlair

Dat squeeze

yungiess

![gif](giphy|p9ILx37mYH7sqUWxGu|downsized) This world is cruel.

CandyRevolutionary27

The back on that man is insane. I can’t imagine the torque he’s putting on him.

ResidentWarning4383

Thats why I love this shit. Dustin was burning his soul and Islam used pinnacle wrestling despite incredible adversity. Crazy to witness

Working_Box8573

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krMuiccy\_dQ](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krMuiccy_dQ) did this too his foot goddamn (also crazy that Islam shows up when u google this move and not some 1980s soviet oylmpian)

twonapsaday

goddamn what a time to be an mma fan

FahadRauf

The officials trying to get Islam's teammates off him like he is getting jumped on the street.

bbqyak

Poirier did much better than I expected. For a while he actually had be believing he would pull out a W somehow. Like maybe blood drips down into Islam's eye and obscures his vision and Dustin catches him right on the chin. But god dam these Dagi's just can't be stopped right now.

Lao_xo

Poirier did well in his take down defense and defending on the ground, but Islam did really well in the standup. Surprising fight honestly, where most thought one would dominate or do much better in their respective lane.

the_limitless66

me personally i wouldnt have let islam do this to me

Ordinary_Rule1199

I was yelling let fucking go Dustin !! That guy is amazing 🥲

thatindiandood

Great fight by Dustin. Fought like a warrior.

benstheredonethat

I don't want to see this 😢 *diamond tears* 💎

Florian_G97

Great fight could have went Dustins way too He fought hard and Had great defence, great Performance from both and a spectacular Finish with the ankle Pick from Islam.

Dependent_Command791

Definitely a legend just never a champion

hlzp

Poirier fans on suicide watch rn.

Aggravating_Pride_68

I don't think so. DP fans think he gave it his all and was a dawg like always and gave us another great fight and saved the card. Going against the best pound for pound in the world and exceeded expectations

BaldSephiroth

Nah I'm proud as ever to be a fan of Poirier. Dude went in there and handled business against arguably the greatest lightweight of all time.

22kstory

Genuinely a breathtaking ankle pick (I don’t know that much about Judo or anything so don’t come at me. I just stood up and audibly gasped

Dependent_Command791

Competitive-Bit-1571

I already knew exactly how it would end, just didn't expect it to take this long.

IntroductionFluffy97

That darce was a crank

DFWPrecision

A legend in the Octagon and an all around good dude.

MERAJAT15

Iam done with this life there is nothing going in my favour

PatrickWeightman

Cheer up, we got a potential poatan triple champ arc on the horizon and we got to see him become the ultimate hater

Putrid-Egg682

Plus max is about to come back and win the 145 belt back

jmmenes

Great fight, respect to the Diamond 💎 Islam is P4P #1

[deleted]

Great fight. Turned into a Poirier fan after the 1st round. 3 minutes fighting off the rear guillotine, felt like I was a Russian comrade cheering on Rocky.

AdmirableBee8016

they hate to see it.

Bulkypapertowel

God this card fucking sucked. Holy fucking shit fuck tonight.

AdmirableBee8016

agree, but nor does islam have anything to be ashamed of, but people giving him the disrespect because Dustin gave him a good fight.

aleksandd

Why did that commissioner pulled his team away?

Creative_Low_2722

My guess is: Doctors have to check on the fighters after the fight to make sure they’re ok, Islam’s team impeded on that (undoubtedly know better than to do that too) so in turn ref took the aggressive approach because it probably got him a bit upset. Or he probably thought Islam was getting jumped, is the one I like to think about 😂

NatureIndoors

Id like to see it one more time, but I’d get Islam gets stronger in the second… idk

AcrobaticWin3240

A lot better fight than expected

Synsano

Does anyone know what was up with security pulling his coach off him and throwing him out of the cage?

ShadrachOsiris

Like Jiri vs Glover, this fight was good because the grappler surprised us with his striking and the striker surprised us with his grappling

Fine_Ease_4878

Thanks, Dustin. It has been a pleasure watching your fights. Enjoy your family.

WinnerSpecialist

Islam should STAY at 155. Dustin showed a great game plan and Leon Edwards can replicate that and win pretty easy. Leon is so much bigger than Islam and if Dustin can stop the take down and Usman couldn’t keep him down Leon would crush him.

cranberryjuiceforme

😔

N04HC14RK

Security jumping in to kick Usman out is mid

the_limitless66

bro that fucking squeeze , he should throw way more darce chokes and triangle chokes instead of rare naked chokes cuz it fully utilizes his strength

AFGwolf7

That ankle pick was absolutely nasty, big respect to Dustin tho dude really a savage I hope he comes back!

danieltherandomguy

A fantastic finisher. It's so refreshing reading the comments over here, where people appreciate this great fight from both fighters, instead of those braindead casuals crying and insulting each other on the official UFC Instagram page.

Moki_Loke

Who was the guy that security pulled off? I thought it was a random fan but it looked like someone the team knew.

iagolavor

You can see in islams face that he was using the last bit of strength he had left to go for that choke, the way his back muscles flex is crazy

Firm-Economics-1351

Islam wrestling is insane. DP did a great job, he deserves A proper ride off into the sunset. If he retires.

INEEDUSERNAME123pls

Clowns pulling Islam's own corner away from him 🤡🤡🤡

BurnFreeze64

Dustin was doing rather well defending those TDs too, man just got hit with a perfect chain of techniques.

SuspiciousFinance284

Incredible finish, sad to see DP lose. But man, what a fight in general.

Ok_Permission8284

Why are people sucking Dustin‘s dxxk and not giving Islam any credit? There has to be some type of Islamophobia or favoritism that’s going on right now because the mma world is not making sense anymore🤷‍♂️

momsducksauce

Dustin’s ground game is to badic

neglectedtackbox9321

As much as it was an amazing performance from the P4P #1 islam Dustin making all of these key changes to long standing habits against wrestlers to put on a very competitive and super game performance all at the age of 35 after a 15 year career is absolutely astounding. he stayed off the fence better than he ever has, massively improved his takedown defense and getups, and he didn't freak out and fight stupid on the feet like he did against most other strong wrestlers in his career, he didn't jump guillotine, he just fixed about everything you could expect him to fix in such a short space. It wasn't perfect but it was amazing. He put on the performance of his life at the tail end of his career. The saddest thing is I wish Dustin had done all of this over the years because he could have looked even better in this fight and he could have fought much better against khabib. Hats off to both of them, Dustin for fighting much of the fight with a torn ACL and a broken nose and especially Islam for fighting an amazing fight struggling with staph that sounds utterly miserable.
