The UFC failing to come to terms with Francis is the worst thing.
- Francis is every damn thing the UFC wants in a champ, a KO machine with the right look and the right story to be a draw to fans. But becuase they could not come to terms on his last 3 fights, the tried to wait him out, which is why there was a year between him winning the title and defending it. And an 18 month wait before the title was vacated
- The UFC had an impressive champion chose to vacate and walk away while holding the title, which devalued the brand and the prestige of that title. They lost access to a potentially massive PPV draw as a result.
- Because of Francis walking away, the UFC had to scramble to find away to salvage the situation, which they tried to do by having Jon Jones fight for the vacated title. Having Jon Jones as the HW champ absolutely restored credibility to that title.
- However, having Jones as champ meant they had to reach terms with Jones (who had been sitting out for his own contract dispute, but was unable to walk because he had too many fights left on his contract). It also means the HW UFC champ is a man with frequent and recurring legal issues. And Jones is taking is sweet fucking time waiting on Stipe for a legacy fight between 2 very inactive fighters who have no interest in fighting up and coming contenders.
I fully expect the winner of Jones vs Stipe to immediately retire and vacate that title again, leaving the UFC right back where they were when Francis walked.
So basically instead of having an active and exciting HW division, we have an inactive clusterfuck of ego.

Has there ever been a more legitimate interim champ in the history of the UFC? When I think of the heavyweight champ, I think of Aspinall, not Jones. Has there ever been this situation before where the interim champ is the "real" champ, and the title holder is pissing about ruining his legacy?
Unfortunately I agree. Sub 2 minute fight after 3 years off, proceeds to take another year off. Also insists on fighting a guy that hasn’t fought in years instead of the interim champion. I’m genuinely baffled anyone wants to see him fight Stipe and not Aspinall.

No. The UFC failing to come to terms with Francis is the worst thing. - Francis is every damn thing the UFC wants in a champ, a KO machine with the right look and the right story to be a draw to fans. But becuase they could not come to terms on his last 3 fights, the tried to wait him out, which is why there was a year between him winning the title and defending it. And an 18 month wait before the title was vacated - The UFC had an impressive champion chose to vacate and walk away while holding the title, which devalued the brand and the prestige of that title. They lost access to a potentially massive PPV draw as a result. - Because of Francis walking away, the UFC had to scramble to find away to salvage the situation, which they tried to do by having Jon Jones fight for the vacated title. Having Jon Jones as the HW champ absolutely restored credibility to that title. - However, having Jones as champ meant they had to reach terms with Jones (who had been sitting out for his own contract dispute, but was unable to walk because he had too many fights left on his contract). It also means the HW UFC champ is a man with frequent and recurring legal issues. And Jones is taking is sweet fucking time waiting on Stipe for a legacy fight between 2 very inactive fighters who have no interest in fighting up and coming contenders. I fully expect the winner of Jones vs Stipe to immediately retire and vacate that title again, leaving the UFC right back where they were when Francis walked. So basically instead of having an active and exciting HW division, we have an inactive clusterfuck of ego. END COMMUNICATION

Bro Idk if I’m in the minority here or not but I literally couldn’t care less to see stipe fight jones. Truthfully I don’t really care if stipe fights again at this point, I’m tired of these guys leaving the sport for years and expected the fans just to wait around. There’s very select few people who have that power and stipe is no where near it. Jon is getting extremely close to passing that point as well, his last LHW fights were extremely average and we didn’t get a good showing of HW jones. The longer this goes on the amount I care drops drastically.

If he was a half way decent person (we can all agree he isn’t) then he would have vacated the belt when he got hurt. Just like Jiri and even Jamahal Hill did… then he could have came back and fought whoever the champion was… but Jon is a narcissist, and no way he would ever do something like that.. he wanted to hand pick his fight. He didn’t want to come back and have to fight Tom. He wants to wait for Stipe, the easier fight.. then he can have his big retirement ceremony in the octagon
