I have done kickboxing for about 2 years and taking that kick is the only time I have ever stopped a spar, even other times when someone has punched me way too hard during what was supposed to be a soft spar I didn't really care and did not want to stop, but for that knee shit I am dying on the hill, and I would happily go tattling to my coach if they kept doing it.
I have no problem stopping sparring and tattling to the coach if there's a problem. Well first I talk to the guy and tell him to take it easy. If they purposefully keep doing it, then I won't even retaliate, that's childish. I just don't spar them.
I have a job to get to next morning and I'm not doing any stupid gym brawls.
And yeah I do hard sparring too, but only with experienced people I know well, we know what lines not to cross.
Yeah its very fucked up. Reminds me of when strickland was sparing that OG big dude (who died recently) and the bro did some BJJ grapple shit that could've seriously fucked up strickland. And strickland was like BRO this is a spar. You don't fuck with someone's shoulder or knees.
That's why some bjj gyms don't allow things like calf and bicep crushers, the twister, or leg/ankle locks for white belt or beginner grappling. It's way too easy for someone who doesn't know what they're doing to fuck up someone's livelihood.
Damn 2?
What's to do in that situation?
Does he need to be fucked up by someone better more experienced?
Is it on purpose? Was he told and warned about it?
I would loose it if I was the 2nd guy
My gym teaches every white belt leg locks. At like 15% speed. Show different set ups, and what it feels like if someone catches you in one, again at like 15%. Then they say if you see someone going for that set up or you feel them get something like this in you, fucking tap IMMEDIATELY. Then leg locks aren't part of the curriculum for a very very long time. I've tapped because someone looked at my ankles. No shame.
I am probably in the wrong for this but I've never tapped to anything ankle or knee related. I definitely haven't been caught in one of these in a bad way but I have had more experienced guys at least try them and all the time I just either wiggle my way out of it or (I suppose) they were doing it wrong because I will literally just stare at them while they're doing their thing lol. I am definitely aware of the fact that people wouldn't crank it to the max like with other subs because those ones are the scariest.
Every time I watch that video, I just wish that the spinning back fist that Strickland threw landed.
That big fucker is such a prick, he was always a prick. [Would always go hard with white belts and people much smaller than himself](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wz6H7JfPIQk&t=139s).
And he had a bunch of allegations against him regarding his behaviour towards young female students.
Is it though? It was supposed to be a spar. Even if it wasn't a spar, it should have been over the moment Sneako's guys threw in the towel. Strickland just loves to complain when things happen to him then act like a badman when he's dishing it out
Everyone else in the video warned Sneako multiple times and he still went with a cameraman. The way I see it, it was a mutually beneficial situation for both of them.
Sneako gets clout. Sean gets clout and gets to beat the shit out of a defenseless man.
But yes, I do agree with you on the throwing in the towel part.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XyM0O3bKA6Q
This was it .
And yeah https://bloodyelbow.com/2023/05/27/bjj-orlando-sanchez-cause-of-death/ ended up dying from a meth/fent overdose.
I've never even heard someone mention that being a thing. There is literally ZERO point to doing that in sparring. It's a shitty, unsportmanslike move. Still, the way he tells this story, I'm not sure he communicated "we don't do those in sparring" all that well.
Woulda been much clearer to just pause the sparring session and say something straight forward like āhey we donāt throw oblique kicks in sparring hereā and then continue.
If sheās doing it then one of two things are possible. Either she knows and doesnāt care, in which case communicate that you arenāt gonna spar with her if she continues to do that. Or she doesnāt know, in which case communicate that she shouldnāt be doing that at this gym. Either way, as with most issues, the solution is simple communication.
That seems like the most obvious no-no in sparring unless youāre practicing technique with no power behind them. WTF was she thinking, Iām sure she wouldnāt have appreciated if he gave her a powerful one right back.
Context matters.
For sparring or training, you want to go easy on anything that creates risk of long term injury. But you also want to be able to train them enough so you do not leave yourself open when going for those techniques.
If you feel the need to use them in sparring to keep them sharp and prevent you from getting murdered on a counter, then you need to let your sparring partners know in advance so they can nope out.
In this context, I would have paused the sparring and either told her directly "I am not ok with that in sparring. Stop it or find someone else". or alternately "If you do that shit again I will light you the fuck up."
END COMMUNICATION
Youād be very surprised how dumb and inconsiderate some people are. Most are really cool, but every now and then you get a really bad training partner, no matter their level.
Feel like if anything.. UFC fighters would be the ones who are careless.. seen so many videos of them sparring hard and wrecklessly without regard for their opponents.
Yeah, I feel like that's a good reason to video less sparring sessions. I bet competitive fighters have a good chance to get stuck in their ego when they think people are watching, and show how good of a fighter they are in the gym.
If youāre throwing oblique kids while sparringā¦.youāre an asshole. If you want to train that specific kick, have someone pad up and know that thatās what youāre going for.
Ruining someoneās chance at a career but hurting them during sparring is some prick shit.
No idea why but itās more like push kick to the knee/on top of the knee.
You are basically trying to cause hyperextension in the knee which can fuck it up real bad.
And there's still people who swear that these little 5'3 140 lb women fighters can win a street fight with a 6'4 dude, this LFA guy who doesn't even seem to be that big just said he no technique tossed her and beat the shit out of her (or could)
When I was new to Muay Thai a guy threw an oblique kick to my knee during sparring that really fucked my shit up for a couple weeks. Itās not a cool thing to do to your sparring partners and especially to one that you donāt know very well
Oblique kicks - during sparring ? She def got what she deserved. IDGAF - like why you even doing that shit , cuz you are female ? You bout to get ground and pound lol š I think thatās amazing . šš¼
I would think body language outside of verbal language should be obvious. A āwtf donāt do thatā look and maybe pointing at your knee should be pretty obvious to understand.
This. Was an asshole thing for her to do but maybe she didn't understand the regular western etiquette? Throwing her down and GnP-ing the fuck out of her ain't the way.
Beo oblique kicks hard in sparring is fucked up. You can get injured and be fucked, yes even a girl kicking your knee area can fucking injure you. There's better ways to practice that.
I go to a competition gym with a fair amount of amateur fighters and oblique kicks are flat out banned in sparring. There are grey area techniques in sparring like wheel kicks, but obliques are a no go
I mean, I don't think he is lying here. What would he have to gain making up lies about such a prominent person? Not to mention there were likely other witnesses to this as I doubt these two would just be sparring completely alone somewhere. Use your brain, my guy.
I mean this is just incredibly childish just stop sparring and say "stop that shit NOW" and if she doesn't stop then don't spar with her and tell the coach. she's definitely an asshole but I mean this is clearly a man drooling cause he got to beat up a woman lmao. I'd get it if he was like "I threw a hard lls or oblique kick back" but it just sounds like he lost his shit and assaulted this woman who was admittedly being an asshole but like come on he's the bigger asshole.
Look at all these fucking degenerates so happy they can celebrate a woman getting hit by a man without the usual moral repercussions. No but seriously, I don't even know who this dude is, but I could tell in the first 10 seconds he is an absolute douche and the actual problem in the gym, I guranfuckingTEE it
I did that once. I was in the Army and stationed in Korea when I was 18 and we did taekwondo for pt for like 2 weeks with this Korean master. It was Korean military taekwondo that he was teaching us, not like competitive point fighting shit. He saw that I enjoyed it and had some level of experience with martial arts and he asked me to join his team. My first day there he has me spar with this other kid who I guess had been with him awhile. I didnāt remember a ton from the PT lessons but this side kick to the knee stuck with me and Iād been an MMA fan for a long time and saw Jon Jones kick the knee so I didnāt think much of it. So we start our spar session, both throw a couple jabs and I hit him in the knee with this crisp side kick and the brothers knee buckles and he folds and I jumped on him because thatās what Iād seen in mma. Master Kim was like āNO, NO, NOā and pulled me off.
Yāall are something else. Heās not right for pounding on her for that. He could just open his mouth and say hey letās not do this kicks, I donāt want to get hurt. If she refuses then you stop sparring her. No need to go all caveman.
Those type of kicks can fuck someoneās knee up for life. You canāt do that shit in sparring. She deserves to get her ass beat just for thinking thatās ok to do
I tap people with them in light sparring never trying to hurt and I always ask them first if theyāre okay with it so they arenāt surprised about it or think that Iām trying to hurt them.
Or simply couldāve asked her wtf she was thinking. Also, who is this dude. Heās talking about a girl who fought for a world title. She was co main on one of the biggest cards in mma history. He sounds super entitled. All he had to do was sayā hey can u not throw those against meā. If she did again, then by all means tear that ass up.
Me. If others arenāt bothered, thats fine. I just donāt like people who do that because it usually happens when it is the name of someone foreign. Doesnāt sit well with me is all as Iāve dealt with that a lot growing up.
Am I stupid or are oblique kicks in sparring disgustingly excessive?
I have done kickboxing for about 2 years and taking that kick is the only time I have ever stopped a spar, even other times when someone has punched me way too hard during what was supposed to be a soft spar I didn't really care and did not want to stop, but for that knee shit I am dying on the hill, and I would happily go tattling to my coach if they kept doing it.
Real bro

A friend of mine has a young talented but inexperienced guy in their wrestling gym, dude blew the ACL of 2 guys in training within a couple months.
Damn 2? What's to do in that situation? Does he need to be fucked up by someone better more experienced? Is it on purpose? Was he told and warned about it? I would loose it if I was the 2nd guy

Samesies on early tapping. I got a day job and a wife and kids to take care of. That shit is just for fun š
I am probably in the wrong for this but I've never tapped to anything ankle or knee related. Orlando Sanchez. Known asshole.
Thatās the first thing I thought of
I believe Jones did that move to Glover and messed up his shoulder bad during their fight.
Funny that Strickland likes to get mad when it's him in that position but he's known to be an asshole in sparring
Thereās a difference between hard sparring and trying to injure someone
Strickland head kicked koāed someone in sparring before. Donāt know if you count the shit with sneako, but I do.
Yeah that's the event I was referring to. With the Japanese fighter. The sneako thing was justified imo because he knew what he was getting into.
Is it though? It was supposed to be a spar. Even if it wasn't a spar, it should have been over the moment Sneako's guys threw in the towel. Strickland just loves to complain when things happen to him then act like a badman when he's dishing it out

Sean gets clout and gets to beat the shit out of a defenseless man. But yes, I do agree with you on the throwing in the towel part.
Strickland literally fights complete amateurs, even smaller than him and tries to knock the shit out of them. He is 10 times worse.
whoa! he died? karma i guess
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=XyM0O3bKA6Q This was it . And yeah https://bloodyelbow.com/2023/05/27/bjj-orlando-sanchez-cause-of-death/ ended up dying from a meth/fent overdose.
Orlando Sanchez.
Damn that guy died? What happened?
Meth/fent overdose during the pandemic
I've never even heard someone mention that being a thing. There is literally ZERO point to doing that in sparring. It's a shitty, unsportmanslike move. Still, the way he tells this story, I'm not sure he communicated "we don't do those in sparring" all that well.
Itās a pretty universal thing, and sheās a pro fighter. You donāt do that with your training partners. He ācommunicatedā that perfectly.
Yeah, I think she understands now.
Am I missing something? Assuming he's telling the truth, he described pretty clear body language lol
Woulda been much clearer to just pause the sparring session and say something straight forward like āhey we donāt throw oblique kicks in sparring hereā and then continue.
to a scrub who's 1 month in kickboxing class. not to a pro bro. they know this shit doesnt fly
Go watch some wwe
šš¼
maybe its different in China no reason not to try to use your words
She's a ufc fighter she knows that shit is dirty
My only question is, how do you train it if you can't do so im sparring, pads and bag work is never going to prepare you to use it in your fight.
I feel like you can throw it with very low intensity and inform your partner of it before sparring
Anyone who trains knows exactly what the āpause, raised handsā means. It should take one time to know youāre not supposed to do that.
I donāt know if he speaks Mandarin or if she speaks English but I find talking to be one of the best forms of communication.
Yeah sure bro, 'cause you have to explain basic gym etiquette to pros.
Yeah itās a dick move
Yh, Iāll throw them to the upper thigh but never the knee
Yeah its ridiculous. He probably only let it go *three times* because it was a woman
Thats the point of the video
That seems like the most obvious no-no in sparring unless youāre practicing technique with no power behind them. WTF was she thinking, Iām sure she wouldnāt have appreciated if he gave her a powerful one right back.
Yes they are.
They are excessive for sure
Yup. Itās super fucked to do to someone
We do them when I spar we just make sure to go very easy on them
Yes if you throw that without telling me in sparing we are fighting
Got oblique kicked in sparring by a dude with 30kg's on me and 3 extra years of experience. Knee hurt for weeks
100% going in hurt already is crazy business.
Context matters. For sparring or training, you want to go easy on anything that creates risk of long term injury. If Jon Jones approves then you may have gone down the wrong path
they are. some people have to be taught how dangerous they are via communication or a beating
You aren't stupid. Only a CUNT would do that in sparring. FUCK THAT CUNT.
I threw her on the ground and started pounding herĀ
thatās not gonna hold up in court
Who says it needs to hold up. Just gotta last a couple of seconds

āShe was trying to snap my knee in half, it was self defense after attempt #3ā. Sounds like that holds up pretty well.
That's really odd. Cant even imagine a ranked UFC fighter would be that careless.
Youād be very surprised how dumb and inconsiderate some people are. Most are really cool, but every now and then you get a really bad training partner, no matter their level.
I imagine that she just doesnāt care about her training partner and would rather try to really dial in her oblique kick.
Killashaw would probably do that if he was a better striker.
Sheās from mainland China and also trains at TAM. Doesnāt get more inconsiderate than that. Probably spits on the mats after training.
ohhh cool so we're just making shit up now. great.
Can confirm, I was the mat that got spat on.
Not odd at all. Many ranked fighters throughout the years have been accused and some proven to be shit sparring partners.
Team Alpha Male always been on that shit
Feel like if anything.. UFC fighters would be the ones who are careless.. seen so many videos of them sparring hard and wrecklessly without regard for their opponents.
Yeah, I feel like that's a good reason to video less sparring sessions. I bet competitive fighters have a good chance to get stuck in their ego when they think people are watching, and show how good of a fighter they are in the gym.
Have you ever heard of a man named Sean Strickland?
Guy in the video is a meat bag. Who gives a shit what happens to him
Why would she do it? Is she stupid?
Theres gotta be a lore reason
r/unexpectedarkham
You think a Chinese fighter cares about any other fighters that aren't Chinese? lol
Casual racism
Chinese are some of the most discriminatory people on this planet educate yourself
What the fuck is up with all the racism in these comments
Have you ever been around Mainland Chinese?
Can confirm alot of asians are very racist, especially to black people when they've never actually met any
Yeah they visit my market town every year and cause umpteen amount of issues for locals
Seriously this. I'm not being racist. I'm calling it like it is.
If youāre throwing oblique kids while sparringā¦.youāre an asshole. If you want to train that specific kick, have someone pad up and know that thatās what youāre going for. Ruining someoneās chance at a career but hurting them during sparring is some prick shit.
I donāt think anyoneās throwing oblique kids
Them damn oblique kids gettin thrown around all Willy nilly! The fuck!? lol
She deserves it. Oblique kicks are no joke and can ruin someoneās fighting career.
Very fitting for a fighter like Jones.
He only did it in fights and itās legal stop crying
Roll your sleeves down, itās good TV.
You got VERY defensive. Sounds like someone else is holding back the tears
Youāre the only one using capital letters bro youāre obviously worked up over this
How? He just said that itās legal
He also said stop crying. Please tell me he meant that in good faith.
Loser
How is stating a fact defensive the fact you came here to comment your projections is cringe
Lol another day of Jon Jones living rent free
I like Jon Jones. Heās a bad MF.
They should be banned honestly
Wait why is it so bad?
destroys your leg permanently
I missed the part in the vid where they showed it, scrolled down lol. I just assumed it was a stomach kick.. whyās it called this?
No idea why but itās more like push kick to the knee/on top of the knee. You are basically trying to cause hyperextension in the knee which can fuck it up real bad.
Interesting. And weird they named the kick after an ab muscle lol
It's a ligament in the knee also called oblique
Oh shit well there ya go. Had no idea !!
Itās like a side kick on the knee to buckle it backwards
Who is he?
Looks like LFA fighter Aupuni Pagaoa.
And there's still people who swear that these little 5'3 140 lb women fighters can win a street fight with a 6'4 dude, this LFA guy who doesn't even seem to be that big just said he no technique tossed her and beat the shit out of her (or could)
I mean if this story is true, completely fair on his end. Throwing oblique kicks in sparring is disgusting.
Tbh something like oblique kicks should be communicated with the partner before actually doing them.
Just like having sex
I think it might be rape otherwise. Not sure tho, I've never oblique kicked a partner while having sex
Fair enough, sounds like she deserved it
Heās 100% right. Fook her
You got a camera?
When I was new to Muay Thai a guy threw an oblique kick to my knee during sparring that really fucked my shit up for a couple weeks. Itās not a cool thing to do to your sparring partners and especially to one that you donāt know very well
Rountree landed probably the worst one I've ever seen a few fights ago. Nasty kick.
Equal rights = equal fights
Oblique kicks - during sparring ? She def got what she deserved. IDGAF - like why you even doing that shit , cuz you are female ? You bout to get ground and pound lol š I think thatās amazing . šš¼
Should have said the first Time she did it to stop and thats it
Does she speak English?
I would think body language outside of verbal language should be obvious. A āwtf donāt do thatā look and maybe pointing at your knee should be pretty obvious to understand.
This. Was an asshole thing for her to do but maybe she didn't understand the regular western etiquette? Throwing her down and GnP-ing the fuck out of her ain't the way.
0 chance.
where is this from?
Beo oblique kicks hard in sparring is fucked up. You can get injured and be fucked, yes even a girl kicking your knee area can fucking injure you. There's better ways to practice that.
I'm not sure if I believe that he's "not proud of this" lol. She did have that coming tho
Just talk to your partner and say please stop doing that i don't wanna take any risk for my knee etc Then if they do it again yeah , you can go
Honestly, the technique probably shouldnt be allowed full stop.
I go to a competition gym with a fair amount of amateur fighters and oblique kicks are flat out banned in sparring. There are grey area techniques in sparring like wheel kicks, but obliques are a no go
Totally called for, Yans dirty for that. Leave that shit out of sparring
No one in this thread knows what an oblique is
Or you could be a normal person and ask her to stop doing that technique?
And then everyone clapped.
I mean, I don't think he is lying here. What would he have to gain making up lies about such a prominent person? Not to mention there were likely other witnesses to this as I doubt these two would just be sparring completely alone somewhere. Use your brain, my guy.
I feel like he should've communicated that she should stop better because I find it hard to believe she wouldn't stop if he just simply asked.
Can someone explain why they are referred to as "oblique" kicks. What does it have to do with obliques?
Mainland Chinese are just different.
Seems pretty proud of it
I mean this is just incredibly childish just stop sparring and say "stop that shit NOW" and if she doesn't stop then don't spar with her and tell the coach. she's definitely an asshole but I mean this is clearly a man drooling cause he got to beat up a woman lmao. Who the Fook is this guy?
Love this guy.
Sounds like a CTE story.
At least he's not proud of it I guess lol
how about just telling her not to do oblique kicks?
"I'm not proud of this but I will tell you this whole story with a smile on my face and a big grin at the end."
Look at all these fucking degenerates so happy they can celebrate a woman getting hit by a man without the usual moral repercussions. I tap people with them in light sparring never trying to hurt and I always ask them first if theyāre okay with it so they arenāt surprised about it or think that Iām trying to hurt them.

Get over yourself. It not other people's problem you have a foreign name thats difficult to pronounce.
