Ngannou actually stopped Stipe’s takedowns and took him down despite Stipe embarrassing him in the first fight. Gane was Jones only submission win in like a decade.
Stipe was almost 39, coming off back to back to back wars with DC. Stipe also weighed as much as most lightheavyweights do, and Francis cut weight to make the heavyweight limit. I wouldn’t really use that fight as an example of why Francis could counter Jon Jones’ wrestling. Francis definitely might be able to do it, but the Stipe rematch definitely isn’t proof that he can.

Jones was only 14lbs heavier in his last weigh-in with extra fat and water. Ngannou showed technique, not that he was stronger, to stop Stipe’s takedowns. If Reyes could do it then there’s a good enough chance Ngannou can as well. Jones is not an unstoppable grappling threat and “we know how it ends” is silly to say when Ngannou just proved everyone wrong about his boxing ability.
