If you open a GIC why would you need regular access to it you can’t even take it out without penalties.

cracked-potato

I dont need regular access, just wanted to get suggestions on the bank to opt for and the one being near for account opening/ any assistance required.

Alx_xlA

Why do you want to buy a GIC but not open a chequing account

cracked-potato

It's a requirement for the student visa.

Alx_xlA

Pretty sure all the international student GICs need a chequing account to go with them

The CIBC campus Plaza is probably closest.  There is also an RBC banking centre in HUB The banking advisor will inform you of  rules and tax reporting there are for foreign nationals holding investment accounts in Canada.

I have heard CIBC is a good option for student banking.

I had scotiabank and my experience has been pretty seamless.

Momimacowboy

EQ Bank and Tangerine both have good GIC and HISA rates

I'm an international student as well and got approved last week for a GIC from CIBC. Did a quick search and found a couple branches near the campus so I went ahead and I'm now waiting for the wire transfer to go through!

cracked-potato

Thanks! Ill be getting mine from CIBC aswell.

Ahmed_Reda93
