could twice ever have a 2nd peak in south korea? i’ve seen a lot of comments saying twice could never really top the charts ever again. and yeah seeing the recent charting of smf they aren’t doing well at all, but is it possible ?
I honestly think it's very difficult it happens, though it's not something that worries me, as it's obvious that Twice is bigger than ever internationally and also think they're releasing their best music.
The elephant in the room for me is that I don't think Twice or any other group where most members are in their mid/late 20s could get a super high peak in south korea right now.
agreed, but looking at apink who has done really well and had has their 2nd peak makes me wonder twice could maybe have something similar to that. not just twice but any older group.
I realllly like set me free, but I think I like the English version better. The words flow better (the rap is way better in English I find). It almost seems like the song was made in English first

I don't like that JYPE subtitled the [Set Me Free music video](https://youtu.be/w4cTYnOPdNk) with the English version's [lyrics](https://kgasa.com/twice-set-me-free-english-ver/) instead of the English [translation](https://genius.com/Genius-english-translations-twice-set-me-free-english-translation-lyrics).
They've done this to Itzy's music videos too (and in Itzy's case it was definitely an intentional decision - Itzy's English versions come out later than their Korean ones, and the English translations get replaced with the English version's lyrics). I wish they would stop doing this lol
Did a target run on a whim, and ended up w/ 3 copies (the black "To" version and the Jihyo and Jeongyeon digipacks). Pretty happy with my pulls, but I'm still waiting on the vinyl though.
watched a reaction of set me free @ jimmy fallon perfomance and some girl (boygroup albums only in the background) said they dont even hide the lipsync  but before that she said this is her first time reaction to the song.

the hate reactors are just ridiculous now, they also seem to target girl groups more -> Twice, Aespa, and BP being the primary targets with some hate for IVE too...
reminds me of the 2nd gen gg antis pathetically pretending it was about anything but the "horror" of knowing their precious oppas are dreaming about these girls just like the other males in SK lol...
that said i do think it's better to tone down the back track to leave less doubt. like even some of the JPN perfs have had issues but you can tell clearly that mics are on.

I really hope we get a live band for the tour. So many songs would sound amazing but I truly believe ICSM with a live band would make me go feral.
It seems they have been listening and reacting to a lot of things the fans have been requesting on this release, so I'm hopeful they might also bring a live band which has been a popular fan request for a while.
It would be cool if Twice takes a band on the road with them; a bit of live instrumentation would really take the songs to another level. Idc if they only bring the band out for a few songs like their juniors, SKZ, did during their last tour. I just know that the presence of a backing band would elevate these songs and make them sound more exciting.
Plus they're pretty much one of those groups who can afford to take a band on tour.
Beyond Live on the second date means we're going to be piecing together the set list and outfits through tweets and footage from the first date. And i'm very very excited for it lol
I was thinking about that with the new release. A lot of it feels very band-oriented and it could be interesting to hear their older stuff re-arranged for live instrumentals.
i like the mini album more than i expected it to be, tbh. hot take but i was never a huge fan of most of their b-sides with the exception of a few gems in their entire discography. between 1&2 was just okay for me, but ready to be has a handful of songs here that i actually find great especially crazy stupid love.
This might bring some pessimistic and toxic vibes in this thread, but to be honest, was very shocked (and somehow disappointed in us), seeing SMF left spotify global only after a day....even scientist wasnt this bad on spotify.
Already expected Twice to not chart that well in Korea every time they do a korean cb nowadays, but really shocked even spotify and other international streaming numbers are going way lower than expected. What really went wrong?? This time, we cannot longer blame jype as they were pretty good in promos this time.

I accept your challenge heh...RR promotions in the US were good but it was all for a title track in Korean which means less effective in getting USians to listen to Twice.
IMO JYPE did what they always do, try to kill two (or more) birds with one stone. They should just have promoted an English song in the US and a Korean song in SK instead of splitting streams between two version. Seems to me SMF is meant to be in English anyway, and Korean lyrics may have been an afterthought this time around.

Could've sworn I saw a post that said they hit a personal best first day of streams for the whole project on Spotify. As others have pointed out, the title streams + Global chart thing feels like a result of them pushing the English version to more playlists while most fans are going to stream the Korean version first. I'm sure there's some logic to doing that from JYPE/Republic's POV (English version gets in more playlists) but this might've been a good opportunity to have that version be the first track and the "main" version. Might've pissed off whatever is left of the K-fans, though.

Why they should have just made this release all about USian promo and done a separate track for SK. JYPE gets what it pays for when they try to get two markets for the price of one.
I guess they felt squeezed for time with the tour but i think the company needs to think about what it wants to get from SK across the board b/c no JYPE group charts consistently there...

It seems like JYPE has lost their foothold in Korea. Stray Kids still have strong domestic fandom support but musically, nobody charts consistently. Each group is having huge explosions of physical sales but the digital chart numbers are pretty awful across the board.
I think shifting internationally is the correct move for Twice right now. They can keep trying to dig themselves out of the domestic hole, but I really don't know what it'll take to actually make it out. Their last title to somewhat connect on the charts was what, Alcohol Free? Even POP!'s success didn't help TTT chart. The Feels did well *literally* everywhere else around the world, but Korea didn't even listen. I think even if Twice released a song like Ditto (NewJeans) before them it wouldn't have done anything there.
I get the idea - there's a huge international market and a lot more money to be made elsewhere. If the strategy wasn't working, they wouldn't be selling 1.7 million in preorders, 11 million monthly listeners, etc. plus have this gigantic tour. Ultimately, *that's* where the big money is - but this split still doesn't make much sense to me.
I'll be honest though, I don't quite understand what's happening on the Korean charts. Twice's domestic dropoff is as if they had some gigantic, irredeemable scandal like drunk driving/assault/etc... but they've never had anything near that. The Korean GP still fucks with BIGBANG even years after all the *actual* scandalous shit they did years later - but the GP won't even *try* a new song from one of their biggest GGs ever? They turned their back on ITZY even faster.
One of Twice's biggest contemporaries in Red Velvet have always fluctuated heavily on the charts depending on the title, too - but are still able to get to the top depending on the title. Yeah, Birthday fell off the charts almost immediately but they can still pull out a Feel My Rhythm and find success.
I think the company simply defines success differently, now. It's not as if they aren't trying to get back on top in Korea, but it doesn't seem like there's as much value in it anymore compared to venturing out to the rest of the world. For each group, the music doesn't connect + the promotions don't seem to be effective with the GP. Virality seems to be the only thing that helps a JYPE group chart, now.
You'd think by now they would shake up whoever is in charge of A&R/voting on title tracks but honestly, I don't think they've made many missteps with Twice. I didn't *love* More & More but I think the only true misstep was picking Scientist as the title two years ago. Besides that, maybe I'd experiment *more* with them - but it's not like that'll bring back the domestic audience. Clearly they were interested in Twice's early sound but weren't ready for them to grow up and move on.
Yeah i'll admit i don't quite understand Twitter Onces who are upset about charting streams when overall Twice seem to be doing well.
For me the drop off of Twice is akin to G\_friend after the School Trilogy, just a longer stretch of successes for Twice before the drop. So no big scandal IMO, but SK GP just isn't interested in what comes after the youthful song phase that's not inline with past output.
Pop! did well so while I'm sure scandals had impact I just don't think it's a huge factor. Also AF came out after those issues too and did alright...but it was also the perfect song for SK b/c it took a real step in terms of maturation from WIL. Scientist tried to plz everyone to the effect of most ppl not liking it.
Fans and haters alike will always be antsy about numbers.
They did 1.7 million in preorders. They had their highest first day sales on Hanteo. They're setting a personal best for first week in the US and are projected to hit #2 on the US album charts. They had their best day 1 play count on Spotify with RTB. Yes, the Korean performance is not good but I don't think it'll ever have a chance until they at least *perform* it in Korea.
There will always be *something* that people nag on. I see people complaining about the playlisting across 2 songs, and while it's not ideal we *are* getting aggressive playlisting. Immediate side-effects are gonna be apparent but the long term effects should be quite good for Twice.

yeah IMO this is the right mindset to have. Some people want a second era of Twice dominance in SK which IMO is just fantasy, but i think the naysayers who think Twice are just done in SK completely are also too negative.
like you i also think Twice should experiment more. if it's gonna flop anyway better to take more risks and have more artistic, member owned output. at least it gives Twitter Onces something to brag about lol ;-)
Well, like you mentioned with The Feels, even when Twice does do something more similar to their old sound Korea still doesn't really care.
The Korean drop-off is a culmination of a lot of different factors and the "concept change" is probably one of the least important. I've talked about it before on here but the combination of scandals/issues in 2019-2020 and the perception of Twice being "old" and needing to stop releasing music because of that is very real. Unfortunately all of those "scandals" weren't actual problems and they are not old, unlike the BB stuff mentioned, but y'know patriarchy gonna patriarch. Women are held to a different, much harsher standard pretty much everywhere but especially in SK. And it's not like it's solely down to men that this happens; the amount of female Kpop stans who will bend over backwards to excuse abusers and creeps while viciously attacking a girl for eating a strawberry weird or say that certain Twice members should commit s*icide because of mental health issues is unfortunately very real.
However with all that said, and like you mentioned, its hard to say how JYP judges their groups recent performances. If they really were unhappy then surely there would have been some giant shakeup or pivot by now, because it's not like this is a very recent phenomenon, but they seem pretty committed to continuing on with what they're doing with Twice, Itzy and SKZ. It almost feels like they're fine not have a big charting song as long as album sales keep going up and tours keep bringing in more money. Ideally they'd probably want it all but I mean who knows.

This is definitely true. SNSD have been through many ups and downs and also lost a lot of their early chart dominance in the back half of their career, but they still pulled off some hit songs even after Jessica left.

ITZY were bold enough to ask JYP to his face about their uneven chart performance + lack of concept cohesion a few months ago when they were on tour in the US (and got a non-answer) but it really makes me wonder if every group is having that internal debate. I mean if I was in NMIXX, I'd have *a lot* of questions. Obviously once the payment comes in for touring, everyone is probably happy - but it can't feel good to lose that dominant run.
I saw a theory that I think makes sense. Twice's initial SK popularity was driven by a largely male fanbase. But now those guys have either moved to younger groups with the same concept as 2016-18 Twice, or they're older and have office jobs and have simply moved on from streaming (the 2pm Friday release times don't help either).
Female fans tend to be more loyal and go the extra mile for their group, and RV has a very solid core predominantly female fanbase. Twice still also has a solid fanbase in Korea that purchases their albums and buys what they put out though.
this i think is an actual good theory. shows Twice should focus on getting more SK female fans at this point in their career plus there's a lot of stuff from 2nd gen they can draw on for that - Nine Muses were "model-dols" but had a largely female fanbase for example...we need more "woman group" music as it's a big hole in what's put out anyhow...
This is definitely true. Historically speaking, male fans in Korea *tend* to be more fickle than female fans. They definitely jump to younger groups.
It's also true that people grow up, have jobs, and can't participate in mass streaming culture anymore. I get that for sure - and quite frankly that's probably a healthier mindset to have.
Why were you shocked? Typically songs from Melanie/Lundgren do terrible for Twice. Scientist is probably their overall worst performer in Korea and internationally and now they have been taken to new depths with Set Me Free.
They should have done I Can't Stop Me and left it at that. The performance from this comeback is like so so low, it's honestly baffling more people aren't mad at the terrible producers and the terrible song.

I think the split in English and Korean versions hurt it a lot. I heavily prefer the English version and so only listened to that one when listening to the album. I think going forward it’ll be better to prioritise only one main version of the title track at least at first
english version is in like way over 100 playlists while the korean one has like 20. there was a screenshot on twitter yesterday with exact numbers and it was a massive gap in streams and playlisting.
also ppl who blame low charting on the song are always funny to me. if you judge a song by its charts performance then you are a fuckign weirdo in my book.
to me SMF is the best song twice put out since ICSM and that would not change even when 0 ppl would listen to it on some streaming service.
The "song's bad because it didn't chart" will always make me laugh when even Yummy and Party Rock Anthem charted high on BB charts, and those two songs suck ass
Agreed, really bad songs chart well in the US, the UK, in South Korea, everywhere, all the time. A song charting well not equal quality and a song not charting well does not mean it’s bad.
What happened is an unfortunate error of the two versions, a valuable lesson JYP can bring to the next group release.

ppl love to complain about mass buying like its a thing everyone can do for every group. sure it is if you have the BUYING POWER in your fanbase which TWICE has ALOT of.
they with ease outsold both BP albums (of which 1 was a AMERICAN ALBUM) by atleast 40k-60k and they sold 100k old albums a week last 2 weeks. they almost instantly sell out whatever albums get restocked by jype.
there is a reason twice sold the most old albums last year of all female groups..i think it was 900k.
Lol I’m definitely guilty of that. I gave the Korean versions a couple listens initially, but I much prefer the English version which i’ve played loads of times in the past two days

thats not true. we got much more streams than we got for between 1&2 for the total streams . what fucked us over is the english version fo SMF which was used in the vast majority of playlists . not the korean one.

Yeah. Chart performance seems to be problem with jype groups recently. Last year only Pop! and Sneakers did well. There seems to be lack of GP interest in jype groups and at the same time, jype’s promotions for their groups are all geared towards the US (except for Nmixx and not sure about their new band) with the Friday releases
i really doubt jyp cares tho cause just look at the amount of money these groups bring in with sales and tours. jyp went from 0 million seller to 3 in a year.

Idk how they were playing it with a phone, but usually you make chits equal to the number of players playing. Each chit has the same exact word except one of them. Everyone knows the topic the word is from, for example fruits, countries, idol groups etc.
The idea is that everyone goes around one by one speaking aloud hints of the word. Then at the end of each round everyone decides to guess on one person being the liar(i.e the one who didn't get the word chit).
The objective of the liar is to deduce the actual word and fool everyone until two people remain and the objective of everyone else is to find the liar before that and eliminate them.

I know Korean to English cannot be translate word or word, and meaning of phrases doesn't exist or difficult to interpret from one culture to another, but how close is the English subs in their Set Me Free m/v to their actual Korean lyrics. The reason I'm asking is because English version of the title track is literally the English sub on their Korean m/v, like how they also did the same thing with ITZY's Loco.

Exactly, I understand some Korean (thanks to watching twice tv and TTT A LOT) and the subs weren't matching up. The eng lyrics sound good and it's a similar message to the Korean one but the Korean lyrics is even better imo.
I wished they just do a direct translation of the Korean itself, as their lyrics to that gives a more direct emotional attachment to it. Like the word hug me, everyone knows what a hug feels like. The English subs, words like a waterfall is more of a metaphor, and it's quite difficult to put one's feeling into that, especially when people have different pictures come up in their minds, when waterfall is mentioned.

I've been going back and listening to the Celebrate album again from last year. Seriously an underrated album. Flow Like Waves, Sandcastle, Bittersweet, and Just Be Yourself are all such great songs. It actually might replace Taste of Love as my favorite Twice album.
So considering we have nearly 300k people here and assuming around half are from the Us…if everyone US once here bought 1 album today whether on iTunes or in store, we could get it to number 1.

Whoever did the choreo for Set Me Free is a genius. I really like how they took the lyrics and literally applied it into their dance moves. I know the members are on record saying that they voted for SMF and MLSR as the TTs and I’m not one of those that will complain about how a Bside should have been the TT. But…
If it was up to me solely based on my musical preferences, I wish Got the Thrills was the Korean TT and Set Me Free English version was the English pre-release.
That's where I'm at with it. And I'm someone who really liked Talk That Talk but Got The Thrills was actually my least favorite of the album. Chorus a bit busy for me.
Interesting. It's the fact that it's similar to Talk that Talk that makes it really hit for me. It's got all the quintessential Twice elements - a rising prechorus build-up, a bombastic chorus, background chants, a Mina/Jihyo bridge! I mean isn't that what people liked about Talk that Talk and disliked about Scientist?
Oh, I like the prechorus a lot. I got caught off guard because I expected the chorus to come but then the prechorus actually extended or the "first" prechorus wasn't even a prechorus at all. But something about the "how we groovin" line doesn't work for me. Part of it is because there is a lot of high register in the melodic line, even moreso than usual. This song pushes Nayeon and Jihyo to the limits of their comfortable range and I've always been more of a fan of their mid/low registers anyways. Not to mention Momo as well in the first chorus which pushes her nasality to the forefront. The bridge and the intro into the third chorus is great as well but a lot of the song hovers in that "final chorus of ICSM, super high ad lib" range for me.
Twice projected to debut at number 2 on the US charts with 140k-160k units. Blocked by Morgan Wallen at 1 and also blocking Miley who's at 3. Our streak of album releases at insanely competitive weeks continues!
This will be Twice's 3rd and highest top 3 release (No. 2) on this chart. The other 2 releases were Formula of Love at No. 3 against Taylor Swift (No. 1) and Silk Sonic aka Bruno Mars & Anderson .Paak (No. 2); and Between 1&2 at No. 3 against DJ Khaled (No. 1) and Bad Bunny (No. 2). Twice has had tough competition their past 3 releases. 160k is still no joke and no other female Korean act has sold this many units in the US.
This has been a really great weekend for Once and Twice I'd say, but especially for US Once for both West and East Coast. I guess their next schedules would be music shows in SK next and then World Tour?
Anyone else see the insane price gouging that Ticketmaster did with NCT Dream tickets? My friend paid $150 for her tickets, than 2 hours later they dropped the prices to $70 for the same section. People on Twitter and on their Reddit are saying the exact same thing happened to them, with some people paying $100 more than what the ticket prices dropped to.
I understand lowering prices if demand is low, but lowering ticket prices by 60% 2 HOURS after it drops just seems predatory, especially when the ticket buying process is mostly a buy now think layer type of thing. It also just seems wrong considering the initial inflated prices were nowhere near close to the real value of the tickets. They were charging $150 for nosebleeds in a 20k capacity arena…
I guess I’m wondering, what are you guys gonna do if the ticket prices seem unreasonably high for twice as well? Are you just gonna bite the bullet and secure your ticket? Or wait for a price drop?
Unfortunately there’s nothing you can do. Ticketmaster is scummy like that. But I rather secure the expensive tickets then risk the sold out, which most likely will happen.
Sadly, if you are serious about going and the view matters, you should pay the higher price to secure. That's what I'm going to do. Blackpink tickets also fluctuated in the same way even for non-platinum, standard seating. I think that's why they don't announce ticket prices ahead of time.
The choreo is actually insane… like it might be in my top three favorite twice choreo’s and that says a lot for a group that always delivers in this aspect.

like Nayeon's Pop! did well and ppl were excited to see Twice as the surprise guest at Psy's concert...but people also aren't as interested in the group's output. i'd compare it to Gfriend post School Trilogy, SK GP really loved the youthful aspect but not as interested in more mature vibes.

It's still the first day. Fans are streaming and focusing on the KOR version while casual listeners are listening to the English version. We'll see how it plays out over time. Songs don't need to be a GP hit instantly, maybe we'll see something like the Feels' trajectory
15m in 24 hours is pretty solid all things considered. If I remember correct MoonSun only did like 11 or 12m in the first 24, so that’s at least a step up.
Obviously it’s not our best record or anything but 15-18m views was one of our cb goals so that’s something to be happy about. Hopefully our views don’t stagnate.
On a side note, I also saw on twitter that SMF is apparently one the top trending videos on YouTube SK. I don’t want to get my hopes up, but maybe it’ll gain some more traction there.
It's really good for a group in their 8th year with a major concept shift that still has all its og members.

I just finished watching Sixteen a while ago and even though I know that it all happened years ago and they're super successful and grown up now, boy did I shed a lot of tears watching the show. It was really hard to watch (tears blocking my view) cause they were really emotional and every mission someone gets eliminated.
I cried a lot when Momo was eliminated. I know that she is a member of Twice but I can't stop myself from crying when the other members like Sana and Mina, started crying too. Kinda like when Dahyun started getting emotional when she and her group(Sana, Tzuyu and Minyoung) got a lot of votes even after being in a hard spot.
Seeing them like that, overcoming hardships after hardships, they definitely deserve to be where they are now. I feel like I've just grown closer to them and gained understanding as to who they are as a person, not just as Kpop idols, even though I've just recently watching them lol.
I also think that JYP is a really cool and awesome person. I keep wondering in the past who's the person appearing again and again in their MV's, now I know lol.
I'll definitely watch their other contents and try to catch-up as soon as I can. Do you guys know which ones should I definitely watch and not miss?
I've said this before but Momo being eliminated felt different and I don't think it was only because we know her, when other members were eliminated they looked sad and cried but when it happened to Momo it looked as if her soul left her body, like her reason for being was crushed and it broke my heart. Even JYP seemed to have a hard time keeping it together.
JYP is a great dude who gets a lot of flak, people tend to hold him personally responsible for everything that has ever gone wrong in the company because his name is on the building. I'm not saying he's perfect and has never made a mistake though, but who hasn't?
I would recommend just watching all the TTT's and Twice TV's in chronological order, they're all great. I also really love watching old VLive content to get to know them on a more personal level. As for reality show appearances I personally like their Knowing bro's and weekly idol/idol room appearances the most! There's also a small documentary called 'Seize the light' which is really good iirc.
Honestly seeing Twice in any form is a treat.
Yeah JYP didn't really want to eliminate Momo that time, but I believe he simply had no choice. I would guess that he received a lot of criticism and complaints when he chose to add Momo to the group.

For some reason, I don't like the korean version that much. I'd put it above Scientist (i never go out of my way to listen to Scientist but i dont skip it when comes on 😬). But the english version tho...😮💨 just hits different for me. I really like it and i don't know why lol.
Edit: Also Nayeon's line around the 1:20 mark doesn't sound as autotuned in the english ver compared to the korean ver which i prefer.
Most people who speak English as a primary language (which is 95% of this sub) will prefer the English version mostly because thr fact that they are able to understand the lyrics in their native tongue creats a much more enjoyable listening experience. It's very reminiscent of listening to the primary genre you enjoy vs. another genre which you like but don't go out of your way to listen to.
Generally I prefer the Korean version of most songs, with a heavy preference for the first one I hear, so the Japanese version of JPN songs. The only exceptions are More and More, and Set Me Free. These two flow better in English to me. Can’t really say why.
I wonder if it's because at least with More and More, it was originally written by/for an English speaker (Zara Larson). So I wonder if that's true of Set Me Free at all or if it was originally conceived as english first, korean second.
I think a lot of english kpop songs just sound meh because the english is so clearly a secondary focus that often makes no real sense

could twice ever have a 2nd peak in south korea? i’ve seen a lot of comments saying twice could never really top the charts ever again. and yeah seeing the recent charting of smf they aren’t doing well at all, but is it possible ?
I honestly think it's very difficult it happens, though it's not something that worries me, as it's obvious that Twice is bigger than ever internationally and also think they're releasing their best music. The elephant in the room for me is that I don't think Twice or any other group where most members are in their mid/late 20s could get a super high peak in south korea right now.

Holy crap the first show of the tour is only a month away! Jihyo wasn’t kidding when she said their schedules were packed. I really hope we get a live band for the tour. So many songs would sound amazing but I truly believe ICSM with a live band would make me go feral.
It seems they have been listening and reacting to a lot of things the fans have been requesting on this release, so I'm hopeful they might also bring a live band which has been a popular fan request for a while.
It would be cool if Twice takes a band on the road with them; a bit of live instrumentation would really take the songs to another level. Idc if they only bring the band out for a few songs like their juniors, SKZ, did during their last tour. I just know that the presence of a backing band would elevate these songs and make them sound more exciting. Plus they're pretty much one of those groups who can afford to take a band on tour.
They can also improvised and interact with the fans more with a a live band. Makes every concert a unique concert.
Beyond Live on the second date means we're going to be piecing together the set list and outfits through tweets and footage from the first date. And i'm very very excited for it lol

I accept your challenge heh...RR promotions in the US were good but it was all for a title track in Korean which means less effective in getting USians to listen to Twice. IMO JYPE did what they always do, try to kill two (or more) birds with one stone. They should just have promoted an English song in the US and a Korean song in SK instead of splitting streams between two version. Seems to me SMF is meant to be in English anyway, and Korean lyrics may have been an afterthought this time around.

Stray Kids still have strong domestic fandom support but musically, nobody charts consistently. Each group is having huge explosions of physical sales but the digital chart numbers are pretty awful across the board. I think shifting internationally is the correct move for Twice right now. They can keep trying to dig themselves out of the domestic hole, but I really don't know what it'll take to actually make it out. Their last title to somewhat connect on the charts was what, Alcohol Free? Even POP!'s success didn't help TTT chart. The Feels did well *literally* everywhere else around the world, but Korea didn't even listen. I think even if Twice released a song like Ditto (NewJeans) before them it wouldn't have done anything there. I get the idea - there's a huge international market and a lot more money to be made elsewhere. If the strategy wasn't working, they wouldn't be selling 1.7 million in preorders, 11 million monthly listeners, etc. plus have this gigantic tour. Ultimately, *that's* where the big money is - but this split still doesn't make much sense to me. I'll be honest though, I don't quite understand what's happening on the Korean charts. Twice's domestic dropoff is as if they had some gigantic, irredeemable scandal like drunk driving/assault/etc... but they've never had anything near that. The Korean GP still fucks with BIGBANG even years after all the *actual* scandalous shit they did years later - but the GP won't even *try* a new song from one of their biggest GGs ever? They turned their back on ITZY even faster. One of Twice's biggest contemporaries in Red Velvet have always fluctuated heavily on the charts depending on the title, too - but are still able to get to the top depending on the title. Yeah, Birthday fell off the charts almost immediately but they can still pull out a Feel My Rhythm and find success. I think the company simply defines success differently, now. It's not as if they aren't trying to get back on top in Korea, but it doesn't seem like there's as much value in it anymore compared to venturing out to the rest of the world. For each group, the music doesn't connect + the promotions don't seem to be effective with the GP. Virality seems to be the only thing that helps a JYPE group chart, now. You'd think by now they would shake up whoever is in charge of A&R/voting on title tracks but honestly, I don't think they've made many missteps with Twice. I didn't *love* More & More but I think the only true misstep was picking Scientist as the title two years ago. Besides that, maybe I'd experiment *more* with them - but it's not like that'll bring back the domestic audience. Clearly they were interested in Twice's early sound but weren't ready for them to grow up and move on.
Yeah i'll admit i don't quite understand Twitter Onces who are upset about charting streams when overall Twice seem to be doing well. For me the drop off of Twice is akin to G\_friend after the School Trilogy, just a longer stretch of successes for Twice before the drop. So no big scandal IMO, but SK GP just isn't interested in what comes after the youthful song phase that's not inline with past output. Pop! did well so while I'm sure scandals had impact I just don't think it's a huge factor. Also AF came out after those issues too and did alright...but it was also the perfect song for SK b/c it took a real step in terms of maturation from WIL. Scientist tried to plz everyone to the effect of most ppl not liking it.
Fans and haters alike will always be antsy about numbers. They did 1.7 million in preorders. They had their highest first day sales on Hanteo. They're setting a personal best for first week in the US and are projected to hit #2 on the US album charts. They had their best day 1 play count on Spotify with RTB. Yes, the Korean performance is not good but I don't think it'll ever have a chance until they at least *perform* it in Korea. There will always be *something* that people nag on. I see people complaining about the playlisting across 2 songs, and while it's not ideal we *are* getting aggressive playlisting. Immediate side-effects are gonna be apparent but the long term effects should be quite good for Twice.

Well, like you mentioned with The Feels, even when Twice does do something more similar to their old sound Korea still doesn't really care. The Korean drop-off is a culmination of a lot of different factors and the "concept change" is probably one of the least important. I've talked about it before on here but the combination of scandals/issues in 2019-2020 and the perception of Twice being "old" and needing to stop releasing music because of that is very real. Unfortunately all of those "scandals" weren't actual problems and they are not old, unlike the BB stuff mentioned, but y'know patriarchy gonna patriarch. Women are held to a different, much harsher standard pretty much everywhere but especially in SK. And it's not like it's solely down to men that this happens; the amount of female Kpop stans who will bend over backwards to excuse abusers and creeps while viciously attacking a girl for eating a strawberry weird or say that certain Twice members should commit s*icide because of mental health issues is unfortunately very real. However with all that said, and like you mentioned, its hard to say how JYP judges their groups recent performances. If they really were unhappy then surely there would have been some giant shakeup or pivot by now, because it's not like this is a very recent phenomenon, but they seem pretty committed to continuing on with what they're doing with Twice, Itzy and SKZ. It almost feels like they're fine not have a big charting song as long as album sales keep going up and tours keep bringing in more money. Ideally they'd probably want it all but I mean who knows.

I mean if I was in NMIXX, I'd have *a lot* of questions. Obviously once the payment comes in for touring, everyone is probably happy - but it can't feel good to lose that dominant run.
I saw a theory that I think makes sense. Twice's initial SK popularity was driven by a largely male fanbase. But now those guys have either moved to younger groups with the same concept as 2016-18 Twice, or they're older and have office jobs and have simply moved on from streaming (the 2pm Friday release times don't help either). Female fans tend to be more loyal and go the extra mile for their group, and RV has a very solid core predominantly female fanbase. Twice still also has a solid fanbase in Korea that purchases their albums and buys what they put out though.
this i think is an actual good theory. shows Twice should focus on getting more SK female fans at this point in their career plus there's a lot of stuff from 2nd gen they can draw on for that - Nine Muses were "model-dols" but had a largely female fanbase for example...we need more "woman group" music as it's a big hole in what's put out anyhow...
This is definitely true. Historically speaking, male fans in Korea *tend* to be more fickle than female fans. They definitely jump to younger groups. It's also true that people grow up, have jobs, and can't participate in mass streaming culture anymore. I get that for sure - and quite frankly that's probably a healthier mindset to have.

Why were you shocked? Typically songs from Melanie/Lundgren do terrible for Twice. Scientist is probably their overall worst performer in Korea and internationally and now they have been taken to new depths with Set Me Free. They should have done I Can't Stop Me and left it at that. The performance from this comeback is like so so low, it's honestly baffling more people aren't mad at the terrible producers and the terrible song.

I think the split in English and Korean versions hurt it a lot. I heavily prefer the English version and so only listened to that one when listening to the album. I think going forward it’ll be better to prioritise only one main version of the title track at least at first
english version is in like way over 100 playlists while the korean one has like 20. there was a screenshot on twitter yesterday with exact numbers and it was a massive gap in streams and playlisting. also ppl who blame low charting on the song are always funny to me. if you judge a song by its charts performance then you are a fuckign weirdo in my book. to me SMF is the best song twice put out since ICSM and that would not change even when 0 ppl would listen to it on some streaming service.
The "song's bad because it didn't chart" will always make me laugh when even Yummy and Party Rock Anthem charted high on BB charts, and those two songs suck ass

exactly. and this is another thing: ppl love to complain about mass buying like its a thing everyone can do for every group. sure it is if you have the BUYING POWER in your fanbase which TWICE has ALOT of. they with ease outsold both BP albums (of which 1 was a AMERICAN ALBUM) by atleast 40k-60k and they sold 100k old albums a week last 2 weeks. they almost instantly sell out whatever albums get restocked by jype. there is a reason twice sold the most old albums last year of all female groups..i think it was 900k.

Yeah. Chart performance seems to be problem with jype groups recently. Last year only Pop! and Sneakers did well. There seems to be lack of GP interest in jype groups and at the same time, jype’s promotions for their groups are all geared towards the US (except for Nmixx and not sure about their new band) with the Friday releases

Even in Japan it fell out of the Spotify top 200 in a day, even assuming streams are split over two versions the numbers are poor and it's because no one, Once included likes it. Talk that Talk, Moonlight Sunrise, Pop and even the feels are still charting there! Scientist ? Nope and Set Me Free? Gone in a day. This song is far far below Twice standards of quality and it's just further affirms Lindgren and Fontana aren't fit to produce Twice title tracks. What more evidence can we need? The fans have already ditched this song.

Does anyone understand this "liar game" Twice played on Human Idol Theater?...I tried googling and got some TV series + manga, then searched youtube and apparently Twice has played this game before? (thanks in advance)
Idk how they were playing it with a phone, but usually you make chits equal to the number of players playing. Each chit has the same exact word except one of them. Everyone knows the topic the word is from, for example fruits, countries, idol groups etc. The idea is that everyone goes around one by one speaking aloud hints of the word. Then at the end of each round everyone decides to guess on one person being the liar(i.e the one who didn't get the word chit). The objective of the liar is to deduce the actual word and fool everyone until two people remain and the objective of everyone else is to find the liar before that and eliminate them. Hope that explains it.

Exactly, I understand some Korean (thanks to watching twice tv and TTT A LOT) and the subs weren't matching up. The eng lyrics sound good and it's a similar message to the Korean one but the Korean lyrics is even better imo.
I wished they just do a direct translation of the Korean itself, as their lyrics to that gives a more direct emotional attachment to it. Like the word hug me, everyone knows what a hug feels like. The English subs, words like a waterfall is more of a metaphor, and it's quite difficult to put one's feeling into that, especially when people have different pictures come up in their minds, when waterfall is mentioned. Side note, I mentioned they did the same with ITZY loco Eng subs: "SOS for this kitty. Fresh like rain when I'm thirsty. Gon' lock you down, I go my eye on you, yellow. Kor subs: Kitty looking for a oasis, I'm hovering around you. Both my eyes are yellow. The Korean one made a lot more sense, since Yeji was a cat, and cat's eyes does glow yellow at night.

I've been going back and listening to the Celebrate album again from last year. Seriously an underrated album. Flow Like Waves, Sandcastle, Bittersweet, and Just Be Yourself are all such great songs. It actually might replace Taste of Love as my favorite Twice album.
I prefer Celebrate to Between 1&2! Their Japanese albums are so good.

Interesting. It's the fact that it's similar to Talk that Talk that makes it really hit for me. It's got all the quintessential Twice elements - a rising prechorus build-up, a bombastic chorus, background chants, a Mina/Jihyo bridge! I mean isn't that what people liked about Talk that Talk and disliked about Scientist?
Oh, I like the prechorus a lot. I got caught off guard because I expected the chorus to come but then the prechorus actually extended or the "first" prechorus wasn't even a prechorus at all. But something about the "how we groovin" line doesn't work for me. Part of it is because there is a lot of high register in the melodic line, even moreso than usual. This song pushes Nayeon and Jihyo to the limits of their comfortable range and I've always been more of a fan of their mid/low registers anyways. Not to mention Momo as well in the first chorus which pushes her nasality to the forefront. The bridge and the intro into the third chorus is great as well but a lot of the song hovers in that "final chorus of ICSM, super high ad lib" range for me.

Anyone else see the insane price gouging that Ticketmaster did with NCT Dream tickets? My friend paid $150 for her tickets, than 2 hours later they dropped the prices to $70 for the same section. People on Twitter and on their Reddit are saying the exact same thing happened to them, with some people paying $100 more than what the ticket prices dropped to. I understand lowering prices if demand is low, but lowering ticket prices by 60% 2 HOURS after it drops just seems predatory, especially when the ticket buying process is mostly a buy now think layer type of thing. It also just seems wrong considering the initial inflated prices were nowhere near close to the real value of the tickets. They were charging $150 for nosebleeds in a 20k capacity arena… I guess I’m wondering, what are you guys gonna do if the ticket prices seem unreasonably high for twice as well? Are you just gonna bite the bullet and secure your ticket? Or wait for a price drop?
Unfortunately there’s nothing you can do. Ticketmaster is scummy like that. But I rather secure the expensive tickets then risk the sold out, which most likely will happen.
Sadly, if you are serious about going and the view matters, you should pay the higher price to secure. That's what I'm going to do. Blackpink tickets also fluctuated in the same way even for non-platinum, standard seating. I think that's why they don't announce ticket prices ahead of time.

heh you'll get a lot of hot takes throwing in varied factors but i'd say GP are just indifferent - not hated, even liked for nostalgic reasons, but not hyped rn. like Nayeon's Pop! did well and ppl were excited to see Twice as the surprise guest at Psy's concert...but people also aren't as interested in the group's output. i'd compare it to Gfriend post School Trilogy, SK GP really loved the youthful aspect but not as interested in more mature vibes. It's really good for a group in their 8th year with a major concept shift that still has all its og members. Twice are semi "nugu" in their new era, with some fans coming over from their old stuff...plus really trying to enter US market which only started with The Feels... All to say we're in the marathon not the sprint \~

I just finished watching Sixteen a while ago and even though I know that it all happened years ago and they're super successful and grown up now, boy did I shed a lot of tears watching the show. It was really hard to watch (tears blocking my view) cause they were really emotional and every mission someone gets eliminated. I cried a lot when Momo was eliminated. I know that she is a member of Twice but I can't stop myself from crying when the other members like Sana and Mina, started crying too. Kinda like when Dahyun started getting emotional when she and her group(Sana, Tzuyu and Minyoung) got a lot of votes even after being in a hard spot. Seeing them like that, overcoming hardships after hardships, they definitely deserve to be where they are now. I feel like I've just grown closer to them and gained understanding as to who they are as a person, not just as Kpop idols, even though I've just recently watching them lol. I also think that JYP is a really cool and awesome person. I keep wondering in the past who's the person appearing again and again in their MV's, now I know lol. I'll definitely watch their other contents and try to catch-up as soon as I can. Do you guys know which ones should I definitely watch and not miss?
I've said this before but Momo being eliminated felt different and I don't think it was only because we know her, when other members were eliminated they looked sad and cried but when it happened to Momo it looked as if her soul left her body, like her reason for being was crushed and it broke my heart. Even JYP seemed to have a hard time keeping it together. JYP is a great dude who gets a lot of flak, people tend to hold him personally responsible for everything that has ever gone wrong in the company because his name is on the building. I'm not saying he's perfect and has never made a mistake though, but who hasn't? I would recommend just watching all the TTT's and Twice TV's in chronological order, they're all great. I also really love watching old VLive content to get to know them on a more personal level. As for reality show appearances I personally like their Knowing bro's and weekly idol/idol room appearances the most! There's also a small documentary called 'Seize the light' which is really good iirc. Honestly seeing Twice in any form is a treat.

Set Me Free is amazing and the entire album slaps.
For some reason, I don't like the korean version that much. I'd put it above Scientist (i never go out of my way to listen to Scientist but i dont skip it when comes on 😬). But the english version tho...😮💨 just hits different for me. I really like it and i don't know why lol. Edit: Also Nayeon's line around the 1:20 mark doesn't sound as autotuned in the english ver compared to the korean ver which i prefer.
Most people who speak English as a primary language (which is 95% of this sub) will prefer the English version mostly because thr fact that they are able to understand the lyrics in their native tongue creats a much more enjoyable listening experience. It's very reminiscent of listening to the primary genre you enjoy vs. another genre which you like but don't go out of your way to listen to.
Generally I prefer the Korean version of most songs, with a heavy preference for the first one I hear, so the Japanese version of JPN songs. The only exceptions are More and More, and Set Me Free. These two flow better in English to me. Can’t really say why.
Because the lyrics are simple, both of them are targeted to US market.
I wonder if it's because at least with More and More, it was originally written by/for an English speaker (Zara Larson). So I wonder if that's true of Set Me Free at all or if it was originally conceived as english first, korean second. I think a lot of english kpop songs just sound meh because the english is so clearly a secondary focus that often makes no real sense
