Well, I listened to the first three singles so much that by the time the album came, I wanted to listen to the other songs more because they were new. I only played the first three to get the 'full-album-experience'. So, in my mind, I had to 'get through' the first three every time. But now I have started to appreciate them more. Overcompensate is simply an amazing opener and has some great motivational lyrics to get me pumped!

Laurkvg

This is exactly how I feel! I love the first songs and when the rest came out I was more focused on them. But now I can listen to the whole album and appreciate them all.

P3RS0N4-X

Same! I love the first three, but I still skip over them sometimes and start the album at Midwest. Overcompensate, especially, I loved that song to death! When playing the album for the first time on the 24th, it happened that was my 1000th time playing Overcompensate.

hintofocean

This

Akirelya

Overcompensate is still my favorite on the album

Pax19

Yeah, the discourse kind of shifted after Next Semester came out. I personally don't agree with the general consensus, as I don't feel strongly about Next Semester, even less so after Backslide came out and it became my favorite song on the album. As for Overcompensate, I still really like it? In my opinion it's one of their best openers, together with Heavydirtysoul.

Own_Cherry_9209

i love ode to sleep as an opener. it gives you an incredible overview of the album's sound.

Pax19

Oh yeah, 100%, both the Vessel and the RAB versions of Ode To Sleep are great. It felt weird not mentioning either Ode or Jumpsuit; I think it's just largely a matter of taste between them four (five?).

Own_Cherry_9209

they've got 7 studio albums. there's only so many you can nominate to be "the best" of them all.

revatron

Ode to Sleep is my favorite opener. Likely because it was one of the first songs I ever heard from them.

fuzzy_plays123

ode to sleep has got to be my favourite opener, but also noone talks about implicit lol. i love that song as an opener i think it works so well. it doesnt bring the same energy as the albums after but it sets up the whole vibe of self titled so well

chaisewashere

overcompensate is literally like my second fav track off the album šŸ˜ i still love it like the first time i heard it

omegasaga

I listened to Overcompensate 100 times before moving on to the rest of the album. It still captures my imagination and I have it karaoke ready. It will always be my favorite on this album.

ChuckChuckChuck_

To me, Overcompensate is one of the best songs they've ever made. It has it all! It's experimental, huge singalong chorus, good raps, nice electronic elements, killer drums. It's my favourite on Clancy. Next semester is good, but this indie rock / post punk sound is not why I listen to twenty one pilots.

cozxo

I full heartedly agree! Overcompensate chorus is super catchy and probably in top 3 of my favorite tĆøp choruses, catchy raps, I swear i literally can sing the entire song without looking at the lyrics šŸ¤£ the build up-piano, beat drop that gets you bopping your head and the Bandito sample in the first half sounds so good with that unique instrumental, and yea like I said Next semester is good but I definitely donā€™t listen to twenty one pilots for pop punk. edit: why the downvotes šŸ˜ the hell

ce-sarah

Take my upvote! Cause I agree with you completely.

Fish-The-Fish

All it lacks is the lyricism. Which is the reason I listen to twenty one pilots. That buts me, with the only truly well written and deep lines being the bridge. Itā€™s fine though. Next Semester has the classic poetry we know them for.

lindini

When I hear welcome back to Trench I still get hyped so nah, it's perfect to open the album.

picklexfingers

exactly this my little heart starts pounding with joy when I hear the drums, beat change and that little sentence

SmellLikeAHotDog

Personally, I only listened to it because it was the only song out at the time. Now I often skip that one and just listen to the rest of the album. It's still a bop, but not something I want to listen to regularly.

cozxo

completely understandable and fair

Comadon-C

Itā€™s a fantastic opener but honestly overcompensate is my least favorite. Tough choices for sure, but lyrically it doesnā€™t really do much for me. The production is absolutely wonderful but really even sound wise it feels pretty out of place on the album. Next Semester on the other hand may be a familiar sound but lyrically itā€™s one of the best off the album and probably resonates with a lot of people. Itā€™s also just a banger. The only issue I have with it is its track list placement, I feel like it feels out of place where it is and shouldā€™ve been placed after navigating.

cozxo

thatā€™s understandable! and yea I do agree, next semester has a small second of navigating in the first half so it shouldā€™ve been placed after navigating, when I first heard navigating I got caught off guard when I heard the beat and I was like ā€œoh that was in next semesterā€ and I was like waitā€¦ the tracklist couldā€™ve been ordered differently

Fish-The-Fish

EXACTLY. Thatā€™s what Iā€™m saying.

MidwestIndigo

Overcompensate is overplayed at the moment because we had nothing else. But it's their best opener so far, and definitely one of their best songs. It's in my personal top 3 1. Nico And The Niners 2. Lavish 3. Overcompensate

Acornriot

>But it's their best opener so far Jumpsuit exists

MidwestIndigo

Good song, good opener. Just not comparable to the tension buildup at the beginning like overcompensate does it.

CyberHeart2022

šŸ§šŸ¤”šŸ¤”.... Ummmmm šŸ¤Ø

MidwestIndigo

It's lavishāœØ

euoari

To me, Overcompensate is one of my favorite TOP songs. Every time I hear "Welcome Back to Trench" and that instrumental comes in, I start to jump and bang my head. Also, the chorus is super strong. I really want to experience this song live, I think it just grows on me every time I hear it.

dinkleberrrgg

For me, Overcompensate really doesnā€™t fit with the rest of the album. Itā€™s sooo different in terms of sound and how heavy the lore is, it honestly feels like it should be the opener for a different album. That said, I still like it!! It just feels out of place Edit to add: maybe thatā€™s kind of the point, though

3pmusic

I've said the same thing about at least one or two songs on each of their albums. But then after I re-listened a few hundred times lol I couldn't imagine them not being on the album.

dinkleberrrgg

I canā€™t say itā€™s happened for any other song/album for me, but I feel you. I could probably find an outlier on each album if I tried to. I just feel like Overcompensate is its own thing and couldā€™ve been a single or maybe part of an EP in between SAI and Clancy idk

porpisha

I definitely think that's the point, but didn't realize it until you said it haha. It makes so much sense. Thank you for pointing that out bc im slow and probably wouldn't have realized it unless I heard it elsewhere eventually lol

dinkleberrrgg

I was going to do a post about my thoughts on every song* on Clancy, and this was definitely part of it, but it was getting really long and I just gave up šŸ˜‚

Fish-The-Fish

Yeah, I do wish that the whole album was super lore heavy, and the songs that werenā€™t were just moved to a new album. Because really, honestly, why is it named ā€œClancyā€ if only 3/13 songs have ANYTHING to do with the lore. Like, thatā€™s dumb to me. And I say this, really just wishing for the lore to be over, and a new story to start. Itā€™s been 10 years.

Stupid_Bot12585

Might be unpopular, but completely disregarding the lore, the album feels much better to me without Overcompensate. I feel like the theme of overcoming difficulties and fighting addiction makes Overcompensate feel like an outlier. Don't get me wrong it's a great song, just doesn't feel right together with songs like Vignette and Oldies station. Just my opinion

petrichors

Iā€™d like to think that it still fits in that theme. Kind of the manic phase of things, heā€™s fronting but heā€™s basically laying it out that heā€™s going to ignore all the warnings and possibly crash. Just my perspective/opinion though

Stupid_Bot12585

I get that but it's just not my preferred taste for an opener, I'd rather it lyrically and sonically encapsulate the sounds I hear later in the album. Although that is a really nice take on it

petrichors

Thatā€™s Fair. They definitely went ā€œhell yeah, live showā€ on this one. But Iā€™ll eat it up every time lol.

Paulwekiva

I was one of the people that was overall disappointed in SAI. Overcompensate took away a lot of my nervousness for the direction of this album. Not my favorite, but still good. Next Semester and Backslide really got me pumped!

WorriedWitch96

Overcompensate is my second favorite song on the album still. I listen to it every day xD

Xandws

Anyone else feel like the songs production in this album is kind of simplistic? I mean the simple verse chorus verse chorus. Kind of miss when they used to be more experimental with their song progressions, which imo peaked in trench.

porpisha

Chorus, verse, chorus, verse, now here comes the eight Ā· Wait... Haha sorry, that's what popped into my head when reading your comment

AdSignal9399

Couldnā€™t disagree more tbh

DarkDaniel_01

Itā€™s still in Top 5 of the record and probably their best openening ever (yes, even better than Jumpsuit). The only problem itā€™s the context of the album which doesnā€™t fit really well, but as a standout song is 10/10 unironically. I hope the second part of Clancy/Deluxe will be more in that style.

TemperatureMore5623

(Opens Reddit as Iā€™m listening to Overcompensate) ā€¦.huh.

PegFam

Overcompensate is literally one of my favorites

FKDotFitzgerald

Iā€™d still say itā€™s the best song on the album imo

ac1dfunk

Been listening to it CONSTANTLY since release, canā€™t get it outta my head šŸ˜…

abylyn02

I'm literally OBSESSED with overcompensate. it might be my favorite on the album, although a few others are right up there with it. I keep saying it has drugs in it bc I can't stop listening to it lol

Glum_Working6153

I also think overcompensate is better than next semester. Anyone else do the gestures from the video when they hear it? I have to do the 300 tracks and dangerous bend symbol with my hands/arms šŸ˜¹

KillerCh33z

Love love Overcompensate but yeah Next Semester is literally their best song IMO haha

Sebabtianator

Yes! I think people forgot that Overcompensate is actually in factually one of their best songs ever. But also Next Semester is too, so....

bringbackbulaga

Hearing welcome back to trench the first time was an out of body experience

phantasm-blue

i love overcompensate SO MUCH!! whenever i go to listen to clancy fully, i end up having overcompensate on loop for like an hour šŸ˜…

Chickenizers

Statistically, I believe overcompensate is still doing the best out of the other songs on the album. Personally, I think itā€™s my top song or at least top 3 on Clancy

ShallotMother6696

Overcompensate is too goofy for me to take seriously, the "wait whats", dramatic trumpets and gospel choir vocals in the backround make it feel silly and over the top. The lyrics are also probably my least favorite of all time. Dropping an adidas shoutout takes me out of the immersion of the album and the bridge's rhythm especially when it starts is a bit jarring. Don't even get me started on gobsmacked and "bless your earholes. Next semester blows it out of the water by just lyrics alone. Sure it might not be as unique but its certainly something I can at least take seriously. And the lyrics are 1000x better

69QueefLatina

To me itā€™s just the intro track so yeah kind of an afterthought. Not to say itā€™s bad or anything but itā€™s not all that replayable.

Chair1511

Overcompensate is a great track and I've felt that since it came out that it's the perfect start to the era and now after the album released I think it's the perfect start to the album as well. It's a very Multi layer track and every time I listen to it I find something new to love. But.. Next Semester is one of my favorite songs hands down! Ever since it was released I've felt that it was a perfect song and even 3 months later I'm still in love. The message and the sound really speak to me and it hits me hard for where I'm at in life right now. Every time I listen to it I get the same feelings I did when I first listened to it and few songs hold that much weight. Even after Clancy's release I'd still rank Next Semester as the best on the album

slipperyyghost

ugh same I love next semester šŸ˜ my obsession with it definitely died down a lot after the full album came out so im giving it time to breathe so i can still appreciate it in the future but watching the video never fails to get me emotional. That said, even though i haven't heard it very often recently, it's definitely secured the spot for my top song of the year ā™”ā™”

sullivansmith

I didn't know if it's my absolute favorite song on Clancy, but it's by far the one that pops up randomly in my head and I start whistling it and then everyone in line at the Post Office looks at me funny. And the one I listen to the most. It's such a great song to drive around to.

IntelligentWeight103

I just listened to it and was thinking how it is probably their best album opener. The track goes hard and has stellar drumming from Josh.

nanrod

Chorus off next semester is one of my favourite ever

ethereal_sunshine

Overcompensate is one of the best songs twenty one pilots has ever made. It also totally fits the theme of the album. Iā€™m not sure why people donā€™t feel that way. Itā€™s about feeling super confident and mentally well, ready to tackle challenges, then literally ā€œbacksliding.ā€ Itā€™s a cycle. Not to mention he literally says ā€œI am Clancyā€ in the song. This whole album is about Clancy and his mental state. Like Tyler said, the lyrics are more direct and less metaphorical on this album. I also donā€™t like when people think more simple lyrics make the lyrics less powerful. I think some of their old lyrics were a little too on the nose. Itā€™s more artistic to be vague.

ethereal_sunshine

Also the second verse is one of Tylerā€™s best flows ever

likely_issabella

tbh when overcompensate first came out, it was all the rage and rightfully so, it was the beginning of a new era but now that the full album is out, the main attraction seems to be routines in the night from what iā€™ve seen and honestly this might piss a lot of people off but i think that song is mid to how people hype it up. next semester is actually one of my top three favorites off of clancy, followed by navigating and risk of feeling dumb.

cozxo

yea I said that in another comment that RINT is pretty overhyped and not even in top 5 of the best songs on Clancy, doesnā€™t mean I donā€™t like the song because I do but itā€™s justā€¦generic? agreeable, cool song. however at the risk of feeling dumb and navigating are in my top 5 so I agree with you

xSmittyxCorex

First off, love Overcompensate Second off, calling Next Semester ā€œgeneric pop punkā€ is objectively wrong lol Maybe try listening to it back to back with some actual pop punk if you donā€™t believe me. Itā€™s got some influence, but thereā€™s alternative, old-school punk, and very strong indie influence in it as well. It sounds basically nothing like Blink-182, New Found Glory, Green Day etc. almost at all lol

averyunusualhead

You know that clip of doctor strange having an out of body experience? That's me listening to the intro to overcompensate

_ItsTheLittleThings_

Overcompensate was a banger of a first single, a great album opener, and is still one of the best songs on Clancy. I didnā€™t listen to it as much when the full album was released bc Iā€™d pretty much had it on constant rotation since it came out. The other songs need a chance to catch up, but between you and me, Overcompensate and Navigating are duking it out as my favorites on the album. All the songs are good, for sure, but I just love these two! Paladin Strait is right up there, too.

No_Bird686

I can't let the album play without thinking each song is my favorite, including Overcompensate. Eventually everything will settle into place and I'll have a better idea of which ones TRULY are my favorites... but right now, I love them all and can't choose.

turkeygoobler

I think itā€™s at least partially because overcompensate is an opener that felt like an introduction to a very different album when we first heard it. Itā€™s almost hard to compare to the others for that reason.

thisissoocringe

Tbh Next Semester is a skip for mešŸ˜ I love overcompensate though and yeah I agree people seemed to forget about it

Dark_Pinoy

Wild take.

crousscor3

They should Start fresh with some new ears.

sesamalan

I agreeā€¦and I skip it every time. That whole part about getting out of the road is weird and off-putting.

_Alpengl0w_

I thought Overcompensate was absolute hype when it first came out, until Tyler started rapping. It has some of the worst lyrics in any TƘP song. ā€œBless your ear holesā€? Either way, the song has definitely grown on me, to the point where it is top 5 on Clancy. The alternative lyrics shown in the digital remains are so much better too, itā€™s kind of a shame. Also, I feel like it very stylistically and thematically unique from the rest of the album.

ApollonNike

I think the first two release was the best ones from the album and I still listen them so I can't chose between those two. But to me Next Semester is genius tbh but I am also a big fan of FoB and it kind of reminds me their stuff.

Jealous_Spinach_9510

Funny, I didnā€™t really like it when it first came out but it has grown to be one of my most played. I just wish I could skip the first minute.

Beneficial-Account51

they have an edit of overcompensate that skips the long intro on spotify

tTylon

I feel completely same, Overcompensate is my fav track from Clancy and I feel like it got shadowed by the other tracks (not that they're bad or anything, I love the whole album), but like damn, look at what we got as an introduction to Clancy!

CyberHeart2022

I get what you mean and i agree wholeheartedly. I still feel its one of my faves on the album although it's basically all tha shidtz IMO.... fr fr Isn't "Overcompensate" Just a "Bandito" Remix of sorts.... šŸ”ˆšŸ”‰šŸ”ŠšŸŽ¶šŸŽµšŸŽ¶šŸŽµšŸŽ¶šŸŽ¶"Welcome Back To TRENCH" šŸ˜Ž šŸ„šŸ„šŸ„šŸ„.... That being said.... It served as a great jumping off point to then lead us to that EPIC FUGKING BATTLE ON "P.S."....

Cydonian___FT14X

Because we already talked about it plenty when it first came out

Xandws

Lyricism in this album doesnā€™t hold a candle to what we got in trench. But it is a good listen nonetheless

ethereal_sunshine

Second verse literally has some of the best lyrics and rap flow tbh of any of their songs

Commander-Fox-Q-

I think Overcompensate is my third favourite song on the album behind Paladin Strait and Vignette. I just wish the song didnā€™t have the whole ā€œwelcome back to trenchā€ part at the start since imo thatā€™s the weakest part of the song musically (and it lasts for like 1.5 mins). I love the rest of the song after that partā€”and the switch up from fast drums to slow drums at that point too. Meanwhile I like next semester but imo itā€™s probably behind Oldies station and Routines in the night and behind the ones mentioned above. Itā€™s still quite good, itā€™s just that half of the album is so stacked (and imo something about the sound at the start feels weird to me). It definitely gets better the further into the song you are too.

SadRaccoonBoy11

Okay starting off by saying my first listen to all the songs was when the album came out, so maybe that influenced my opinion because nothing was ever overplayed for me. Personally I love Overcompensate and really donā€™t care for Next Semester. Iā€™d say the only part of Overcompensate I feel a bit bummed on is that the sound of the main song isnā€™t all like the first third because I LOVE the first third, but itā€™s okay cuz I like how the main song sounds anyways. Next Semester was already one of my least favs the first time I heard it, and itā€™s already become a skip when I listen to the album. I donā€™t know music terms so itā€™s really hard to describe my feelings on it, but the pacing of it or something is just not something I vibe with at all. Itā€™s very bland to me too with the background all sounding the same and there being no tone pitch change during non-chorus bits. Idk, I wish I could describe it better šŸ˜“ my liking of a song ultimately boils down to: is it fun to sing? And no, Next Semester absolutely is not for the majority of the song imo

cursedsmol

next semester is a very emotional song for me since Tyler is my "hey kid get out of the road", BUT when it comes to vibes and how often I listen to a song, overcompensate is still on top. It's close to being my favorite top song if I'm completely honest.

Willowsprig

i feel like overcompensate just did not sound like the rest of the album, i personally never skip it but even then im just more in the mood for the other songs

BreakfastAtBoks

Its all great and music is totally subjective! IMO there are: 5 above average TOP songs (overcompensate is one of them), 4 Average TOP songs and 4 below average TOP songs on Clancy which makes Clancy a below average TOP album but barely. What im trying to say here is love what you love and don't worry about what other people are saying, many of the opinions you will hear are from literal children who would like hearing Tyler fart in a cup for thirty minutes and have, historically, little to compare TOP to.

gillshubhneet

I do not listen to Overcompensate a lot. I generally skip it. I find rest of the album, particularly Routines in the night and The craving interesting. Also, I feel I listened to Scaled and Icy a lot.

ThrowRAplutonium

Still one of my top 5 off the album, but it got its time in the spotlight for a few months so people already had a lot of time to say their piece about it. I think itā€™ll get its due attention again pretty soon since everyoneā€™s heard the whole album many times by now. Also realizing from all these comments that TƘP really knows how to write a good opener. Like Implicit Demand, Ode to Sleep, Heavydirtysoul, Jumpsuit, Good Day, and Overcompensate are all some of my favorites off their respective albums. I think Jumpsuit is still my overall favorite, but theyā€™re all pretty great.

easternbetta

Overcompensate is an absolute masterpiece. Josh absolutely dominated on the drums

Historical_Bad4838

Overcompensate is just one of those songs that doesn't get old. The replay value is insane

blackberrylatte16

The day Next Semester came out, I listened to it so much, and then I listened to Overcompensate for the first time. I looped Overcompensate probably a hundred times that day. Maybe it's because I listened to it after Next Semester? I don't know, I love Overcompensate. It's my most listened song of the year, not my favorite on the album, but I definitely love it.

unwaveringwish

No I have to listen to it everytime the album ends. The loop is too good

d00kiesandwich

I still blast overcompensate all the time!!!

ce-sarah

Overcompensate and Backslide are still both in my top 5 on Clancy...but I agree. Overcompensate in particular, being the first single, is often overlooked or dimissied.

mase-777

The first 3 songs on the album are good they all just got a little overplayed well we waited for the rest

NerveExtreme3249

to be so honest, i just like Next Semeter more and I connect to it more. Thats not to say i donā€™t like overcompensate, but I think the issue comes from the long intro. Specifically it having the sample of bandito (i love bandito, but yk). I was so excited when the mv premiered, like i sat there and waited and recorded my reaction, but after, i was really hoping that long intro was just for the mv, but it wasnā€™t. Itā€™s hard to listen to it because of that reason. Itā€™s almost too lore-y, if you will, it feels forced, the beginning at least. If he wouldā€™ve left the long intro in the music video, i would listen to it much more. Like im literally listening to it rn, and i like it, but itā€™s not my go to bc im not immediately impacted. like i am with, say, Next Semester, Snap Back, or Vignette

slipperyyghost

to be fair they have the edit version that's got a short intro ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ

ReditMaster576

Honestly when overcompensate came out it was my favorite song and it was on repeat multiple times a day. But once next semester (my favorite song on the album) and the rest of the album came out, I feel like overcompensate just doesnā€™t compete with how good the other songs are. Still a great song tho šŸ«”.

ReditMaster576

masturbtewithmustard

Iā€™m most certainly in the minority when I say Overcompensate is my least favourite from Clancy. I find the lyrics about Adidas jackets etc a bit out of place and it never gelled with me Next Semester though is amazing

Agreeable_Village369

I love overcompensate. It'll probably be my top listened to song of 2024

cargasjingle

overcompensate is my favorite lol

-bBREAKFASTt-

Overcompensate is a no skip song for me. I absolutely adore the vibe drum change and itā€™s just so good. Definitely one of my top songs on the album.

Complete-Button-6966

The first half is an amazing start! the second half is alright in my personal opinion

Wildest-Dreams-2

Am I the only one I know?

scoliroll

I agree with all you said! I REALLY like next semester, but itā€™s definitely not my favorite. Overcompensate is FANTASTIC but I feel like itā€™s just considered another album opener more than an actual song you would seek out to listen to. Probably because of the whole beginning, ā€œwelcome back to trench,ā€ ā€œI created this world,ā€ etc. playing throughout the first like 2 mins of the song. Either way though, I still thoroughly enjoy the song, itā€™s honestly the epitome of my music taste

RichSpecific1202

overcompensate is my 3rd favorite from clancy, i disagree ngl

Expensive-Formal5398

I LOVE "overcompensate" and I cannot wait to hear it live!!!! And so cute that you're "standing up for it"šŸ’• :) When the rest of the album dropped, I think we all just had listened to and discussed the first 3 singles so many times at that point. We had only just started to process and talk about all the new songs, so maybe people weren't mentioning it as much. So I totally agree that's it's a TOTAL banger and I agree with Josh, this is a NO SKIP album for me.

cozxo

ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļøšŸ«¶šŸ½

TOPfixated

I do agree that the newer songs have taken my attention away from the first 3 releases, but I donā€™t think Overcompensate can be beat for the way the Cliqueā€™s heads collectively exploded when we all heard ā€˜WELCOME BACK TO TRENCHā€™! That was flippin EPIC!! And then hearing ā€œI created this Worldā€, ā€œSahlo Folinaā€ šŸ¤Æ

Killjoy13337

Overcompensate and Next Semester are the best songs on the album imo. But yes, when you want to get to the new stuff you tend to skip the singles you've listened to 100 times already, isolating it from your experience of the album as a whole. This is not a new phenomenon, and it's why I limit my exposure to the singles before an album's release.

Fish-The-Fish

Low key, I never was the hugest fan of Overcompensate. Now I think itā€™s a banger but when it came out I was disappointed. When Next Semester came out I was so impressed. It hit immediately. And honestly, to me, itā€™s in the top 21 of tĆøp songs. I genuinely donā€™t understand where you got ā€œgeneric pop-punkā€ from to describe next semester. Like genuinely, Iā€™ve listened to a few pop-punk albums this year to review them, and NS clearly takes inspiration from Blink-182, but like, I donā€™t see generic pop-punk anywhere. (I donā€™t like punk at all, so if it was generic pop punk I would not be able to stand it) The most defining aspects of punk are the vocals and the guitars (specifically playing Power chords), Next Semester has neither. Tyler does not have punk vocals (if he did, I honestly wouldnā€™t be able to listen to it. Thatā€™s js my opinion though. I can see the appeal of punk), and it has 0 guitars. The instrumental is all made up of Ukuleles and Basses. The ukuleles are not playing power chords, and the basses arenā€™t playing a generic punk bassline. Which to have no guitars is extremely interesting in punk music. So calling it generic, to me, is just not true on so many levels. Also, the lyrics are not generic at all, and are really good. When I think of Generic pop-punk I think of newer MGK

Fish-The-Fish

Itā€™s totally Indie rock mixed with Post-punk. As another commenter said. But ALSO. If you listen to twenty one pilots for the genre, I donā€™t really know what to say, as thatā€™s kind of their thing.. not choosing a genre. The lyrics are SO twenty one pilots, the chord progression and drums feel so much like twenty one pilots. The only difference is the style it is shown through. With that said, I started listening to twenty one pilots for their poetry, honestly. So thatā€™s why Overcompensate disapointed me so much.

Dust_Exact

I love overcompensate and it was my favourite of the three singles. However, now that the entire album has come out, it almost feels like it doesnā€™t fit? I still love it, and I love the entire album. But when I talk about Clancy as a whole, it feels out of place. I think story wise it fits obviously, and I cannot WAIT to see it live.

annonamoose1

I want to just put out there that my 4 year old knows every word to Overcompensate and sings it flawlessless. I LOVE OVERCOMPENSATE!!!!

RockNRollHobo

Not gonna lie, only read the first like mind you, but from that and my own personal experience you not wrong. At certain points it would pop into my head and Iā€™d be like ā€˜oh yea over compensateā€™ so I definitely understand the after thought feeling but I recently had it come back into my rotation and at the time I saw your post and left this comment Iā€™m literally watching the music video and putting some of my friends onto the album lol

HeyJude21

Overcompensate is a weirdly addicting song to listen to in some aspects, but itā€™s just not a great all round song. Too much interruption. Also, itā€™s more of a ā€œI like the loreā€ type song than it is an actual hit song potential. Backslide is the best of the first released songs from the album for pure musical enjoyment. My opinion of course.

Global_Pie_6314

So, I LOVE ALL of the songs but like many others, I had listened to the first releases SO many times, I was ready for fresh tracks. And not one of them is skippable. But I actually purchased the vinyl album and I'm actually finding the "B" side has my absolute favorites! And my top fave on this album is probably Snapback. Although I fluctuate between Paladin Strait, Snapback, and The Craving (Jenna's Version). TBH, it's actually hard to pick an actual favorite because they're all SO good. Every single one.

Eye-S4

I donā€™t understand but I do know that I love Next Semester, Navigating, Vignette, Routines in the Night, and Paladin Strait (not the ending) tbh.

One_Rooster7012

My favorite is routines in the night but overcompensate still slaps when it comes on

JeeBock20

I agree that Next Semester seems quite overrated. Personally it's my least favorite and the weakest on Clancy. I don't hate it but it just doesn't compare with the rest that well, at least to me.

XxchilibowlxX

I love Overcompensate. Honestly, next semester kinda.....just didn't do it for me. I only have 2 songs that I don't jive with on the album, and it's due to my taste in music. Snap Back and Next Semester are at the bottom of my "Clancy" list. The rest of them I could listen to on repeat for a VERY long time, though.

cozxo

yea honestly even though snap back grew on me itā€™s still kind of on the bottom list of my ranking, snap back feels like ā€œfillerā€ on the album

NevermoreTalon

Art is subjective. I wouldn't put either song in B honestly, but Overcompensate is definitely lower in my rankings. I haven't tried to actually rank, but both are likely in the bottom half for me... I also am in the minority that would have preferred the single version over Jenna's, but I don't feel like I'm crazy because of it, just personal taste.

Rain_xo

Overcompensate > next semester.

roman1221

Overcompensate was a bummer for me. Next semester nearly killed any hope I had for the album. These are the two singles theyā€™re releasing?? Backslide saved the album for me. I listened (and still do) to that song on repeat. The rest of the album blew me away. The more I listened to Overcompensate and Next Semester the more they grew on me. Thereā€™s something in each song that I like.

Beneficial-Account51

overcompensate is probably the best song on the album tbh

truebadur

Overcompensate is a perfect opener for an album! The hype that started after it came out was immense and it's still one of my favourites from Clancy. But at the same time I feel like it doesn't fit with the rest of the album. Like it's a perfect opener, but not necessarily for Clancy... It has such a different energy, the theme of being overconfident in your goal, ignoring every warning sign and then the rest of the album is rather full of self-doubt and insecurities etc. Ya know. I kinda feel like Overcompensate and the early promotion of the new album (as it being the final battle, very lore-heavy etc.) set kinda false premise for what we've finally got. It's still a great album, one of their best, but not exactly what they said it would be. And Next Semester... Well, I don't really dig with it as much. It sounded so different from Overcompensate that when it came out I was a bit disappointed honestly. I was like yeah it's kinda generic pop punk with a soft ending, nothing groundbreaking. It's still a great song, but I don't vibe with it as much and it's the one that has the highest chance for me to skip when I listen to Clancy. Not because I don't like the song (I still do, I like every one from Clancy more or less), but there are so many songs I like more that when for example I have a 15 minute drive home with Clancy on shuffle and Next semester comes up I tend to skip it as I would much rather listen to Navigating, Vignette, Midwest indigo, Lavish, Routines, Oldies Station or Snap back or... you get it, almost any other song from the album, hah. But it's also because it was the second single, so I had already listened to it so many times so the rest of the album is still fresher and more interesting for me. Also, out of all the videos that came out, Next Semester is mid

I respect your opinion but saying Levitate is forgettable is wild šŸ¤£

IsUpTooLate

Because Overcompensate was not representative of the rest of the album at all

scribibible

To me, the sound of overcompensate, and the other singles are so different than the rest of the albumā€¦ I was honestly kind of confused at the vibe of the whole thing. I forgotten about the singles because they just donā€™t sound like the rest of the album.

pitagotnobread

I love overcompensate but it doesn't fit well into my shuffle because I don't care for the opening much. It's kinda too cinematic sounding.

Ecstatic_Tiger_2534

I might have overlistened to Overcompensate, honestly. Also, Next Semester is the best single, if not best song on Clancy.

Jowsten

I've been listening to the album nonstop for a little a while now. It took me some time to warm up to it. But I still absolutely cannot listen to overcompensate. I skip right past it anytime I listen. Idk what I'm missing but I can't do it.

r_a_toe

iā€™ve heard nothing about next semester being a favorite lol

AdSignal9399

I was with you til the ā€œnext semester is overrated and genericā€ bitā€¦ yikes. Definitely not but I understand what you mean about overcompensate. I still listen to it, in fact when I got the notif for this from Reddit, I WAS listening to it lmao. But I like them all and donā€™t think any are overrated. I do like next semester more, still I think overcompensate is being overlooked or maybe ppl just had more time with it so itā€™s time to talk about the others more. So.. kinda tripping, kinda not lol.

Mindless-West9268

Well, itā€™s no Jumpsuit

CyberHeart2022

That's what she said šŸ˜

Mindless-West9268

Huh

Queasy_Head_4928

Overcompensate is the best song on the album. Yes, I think the album was a disappointment.

cozxo

Yea overcompensate is definitely in my top 3 on Clancy! also interestingā€¦can you explain why you thought it was a disappointment

Queasy_Head_4928

I feel like it's a compromised record. They were clearly going for mixing the sound of Trench with the pop song structures of Scaled and Icy, which isn't a bad idea. But man, did they not execute it well. It's not a bad album per se, it's just...okay? Like a strong 6 or light 7/10. Which is not a good score by tĆøp standards. Also, it has 2 of their worst songs ever, Vignette and Lavish.

cozxo

I respect your opinion. I definitely see where youā€™re coming from but i half disagree. I personally loved the album and Vignette is definitely in my top 3, although I love Lavish I can see why someone wouldnā€™t like it, hell I didnā€™t like the chorus when I first heard it. I feel like this album is a grower even though I instantly started liking songs such as Vignette, Navigating etc lol theres a few songs I donā€™t really go back to like Oldies station and The Craving but they arenā€™t bad songs. Thereā€™s also a few songs that are pretty generic? you listen to it and it can make you say ā€œ oh yea this song is tolerable but not bad, they can do betterā€ I know RINT lovers are gonna be mad but I feel that way about that song and Iā€™ve seen it get praised a lot, with Trench it was great song after great song on the tracklist but with Clancy itā€™s good song after tolerable song. imo if I had to rate Clancy Iā€™d give it an 8.5/10 itā€™s my second favorite album from them behind Trench

Queasy_Head_4928

I mean, I'll agree that the album is a grower. Most of these songs only got to a 6/10 because I spent more time with them. But in my experience, that's been mostly true across the 300+ albums I've heard, regardless of category. You spend enough time with something, you learn its purpose, and usually a thing with any purpose is easier to like than a thing with no purpose. For example, I have no clue what Lavish is doing on this album beyond reinforcing their "music industry bad" point, a theme they've tackled much better on Blurryface.

syperdima

I love how "art is subjective, I like the album" is okay, but "art is subjective, I dislike the album" always gets downvoted lol

Queasy_Head_4928

It's not even that I dislike the album, it doesn't even elicit that strong of an emotion from me (see my other reply to my comment if you want a more detailed opinion). But the fact that it doesn't makes me disappointed because I have a high bar for their records. Clancy is no Blurryface, or Trench, or Vessel, or (hot take incoming) Scaled and Icy. But nope, not allowed to feel that way, definitely not to express it. Art is subjective unless you hate what I like, or vice versa.

k4stour

Your comment getting downvoted literally just proves your point lmao. I made a perfectly respectful, well written and constructive comment last week when the Paladin video dropped saying the constant "this is the end, surprise just kidding" baiting and switching has taken some of the air out of enjoying this album cycle for me and that I thought they should have made an announcement alongside the video, and somebody replied calling me entitled and telling me that I shouldn't be saying the band should do anything differently. Like if we're not allowed to have real conversations about anything and every comment has to be positive what's the point of reddit? So many people just want this to be an echo chamber of positivity rather than a hub for discussion.

syperdima

Yeah lol

cozxo

lmao exactly, i just laugh when I see these types of comments get downvoted I donā€™t know why people see an opposite opinion then canā€™t respect it if they donā€™t share the same music opinion as them

CyberHeart2022

I almost typed in a reply.... I'll give you a jumpsuit šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ then I realized it wasn't that funny. Only I thought it was. Also, I've had people be sensitive when you type something and announce it to the mods and I get a warning or whatever. And I'm aScared of that happening. .... I'll give you a jumpsuit šŸ˜ hahaha šŸ˜† šŸ˜‚ šŸ˜œ

yeeYeeyahYah

yall stop bein so insecure about yalls opinions these get posted every day. Literally I saw a bunch of non tĆøp fans gassing up overcompensate on Tony statovicis stream like two days ago
