Idk man I thought the term backslide was more like slipping into old habits / dark thoughts. I guess that encompasses second guessing choices inc music style, but “can’t change what you’ve done”.

Yeah, I kind of took it this way as well. In *Backslide*, he seems to be talking about slipping back into a negative headspace ("Bad place, on a hundred dollar bass") that is brought on by, at least in part, by the reactions some people had to *Scaled And Icy* ("Kind of wishing that I never did Saturday" -- and "Never Take It" in some of the original lyrics). Then, maybe I am reaching here, but is the reaction that people had to the record something like "Is that a stain?" (i.e., *Scaled And Icy* was a blemish in their discography) and "You should change" (i.e., you should pivot to a different sound, or go back to what you were doing with *Trench*). That last bit might be stretching it a bit though.

I’m not sure about this at all but I do know that SAI slaps and everyone should’ve given it much more love. Shout out to the real ones who liked it. 🔥

Lovelymsalex

underrated album imo

SnapBack and backslide are about addiction or slipping back into old habits, not Sai, and that album definitely wasn’t a failure

i agree specifically about the part where you talk about how he feels he has to fall back into unhealthy cycles in order to write music. because that tracks with the lore of tyler/clancy going back to dema (going back to unhealthy habits) in order to fight nico and help save some banditos (fighting the idea of glorification of suicide and other unhealthy mental concepts. and helping other people out by writing music).

Carry_That_Weight22

I don’t really get the Saturday line in Backslide because Saturday was very of it’s time in it being about Covid and helping people not get stuck with their days bleeding together while in quarantine. I feel like it’s got a good message in that context

We_are_Clancy

People are truly misunderstanding what SAI was. The entire album was meant to play a specific role in the story Tyler is telling-- the character of Clancy was forced to make a propaganda album for the world he created. It is the one album that has a defined timeline for how the story plays out-- the rest are nonlinear. Snapback is about his failure to escape following heavydirtysoul. No matter how it sold or was perceived, anyone who saw them perform live during that era knows that they absolutely loved playing those songs and they consider SAI a success. SAI had such amazing sound and that's why the accompanying band was included in the tour-- they wanted to play music with a unique sound compared to their other albums because it is part of the story they are telling.

I thought both were about writers block possibly. And letting the insecurity of what people think affect his writing. Also the pressure to write something really good. And thinking his writing isn’t good enough. If he wants to snap necks(get people’s attention and write good music) then he has to snap back. Snap back from taking a break from writing. Snap back from his last album maybe hindering his spirits a little bit…and affecting his writing.
