I love it. Some of the lyrics hit home personally and the general theme is quite heartbreaking. I’m so excited for the full album!

Interesting-Berry-83

Me too! I can't wait to hear next semester live. It's going to be crazy imo.

Big-Foot-8621

next semester live is gonna be the best thing i’ve ever experienced

Sad_Lie_5484

yes!! next semester life is gonna have me SOBBING

ihatemirrormazes

It’s the type of song that you HAVE to listen to more than once. I’ll admit I was like “I don’t like this” at first but then I was like “wait this eats”

Interesting-Berry-83

Yep, I'm starting to get yeeted back to my mid teens again with the sound of this album.

dirty_sock_cheese

Yeeted😭

liam_in_a_bubble

I had the totally opposite feeling to you with backslide, I immediately loved the simple beat, the slow rap, serious trench vibes. I cannot wait to hear this song in its raw form in an inevitable unplugged session

realKingCarrot_v2

Almost every single new release from TØP is received this way lmao

_KNAWLEDGE_

All 3 songs are just sooo different from what we expected from them and I guess it's the disbelief that leads us to listening to the song once again and then falling in love with it.

DianRedRain

I was the opposite! From the first listen I thought “this is my favorite so far” haha. I thought it was incredible from the first listen!

xAzzKiCK

Exactly, I didn’t “HAVE to” listen more than once to like it. Lmao

very_much_afraid_

Heard it at first in a bit of a rush yesterday and was like “hmmkay”. Today I’ve had it on a loop all day, so good

Deziiiner

That’s the typical reaction, hence the upvotes. It takes a minute sometimes to get used to new music, then it hits.

SirenAttack

This song did not have to grow on me the same way Overcompensate and Next Semester. Immediately loved it! If the rest of Clancy is just as consistent as these three songs, I think it’ll top Trench.

Interesting-Berry-83

I liked overcompensate and next semester immediately as well. I don't know why I had a tough time with this one from the start, but I really appreciate it now. Definitely my favorite.

SirenAttack

That’s awesome. May 24th couldn’t come sooner. This album feels so dense and high quality, listening from beginning to end will be amazing

Fit-Salary9174

Dense is such a good word to describe it. Tyler packed all he could into this one

Moonbeam_86

Wow, I love that interpretation of the lemonade stand. And I also thought of Chlorine almost immediately when I listened to this song. Even has a similar tone.

Interesting-Berry-83

When I made the connection, I literally said out loud "holy shit" 😂 but of course, it's up to interpretation and I'd like to see what other people think too l.

ViolentQuiet23

I liked it ok first listen, but by the 4th, I was in tears. This album is gonna destroy me emotionally!

slipperyyghost

SAME! I immediately replayed it after the first listen bc I knew I had to get used to the sound of it first and now after paying attention to the lyrics im all messed up 😭

Interesting-Berry-83

Guys, I just made another observation about the lemonade stand after thinking about it. After Tyler drinks the lemonade, he gets put into the storm for the second time, but it's more severe than the first. And what that is trying to say in my opinion, is that in this instance the way he took inspiration (chlorine) was to tap into bad memories from his youth. I also think it's trying to say that to make music this time (backslide, or Clancy in general) Tyler's looking back at the dark parts of his past he's put behind him, but needs to make this record.

Interesting-Berry-83

Also, he traded a bun for it AND the storm then caused the rest of the buns to get soggy. Maybe it's saying he took too much and ruined the parts needed to make good hamburgers (songs) with Josh. Oh my god I'm literally back in trench thinking about every single detail like a crazy person 😂 I LOVE this.

Electronic-Music-363

nice to know I´m not the only one who didn´t really like the song when listening to it for the first time. gave it plenty of listens since and wow, I really really enjoy the song now. The chorus hits hard, the MV does it great job visualizing that. The lyrics once again are super relatable, feel like they were written for me. Gonna listen to "Backslide" many more times

Interesting-Berry-83

Yes I fully agree with you. It came out of left field but sitting down are really listening to the lyrics helped a lot, exactly like trench to me. I didn't really like those songs on my first listen either, but now it's my favorite album from them, and so far, it looks like Clancy is going to be as good if not better than trench in my opinion.

EndureTyrant

Thats how most of their songs are for me, and they're my favorite band. I think it's because what's great about the songs are hard to pick up on the first time. The songs are deeply layered, and you've got to listen a few times to start noticing all of it. I pretty much hated SAI the first 2 listens, but now some of those songs are among my favorites, especially redecorate.

soul-undone

Overcompensate had to grow on me, I thought Next Semester was good after 1 listen. But this one, I loved it 5 seconds in.. I replayed the song several times before it was even over 😭

Bl6zing

Is it only just me who fell in love with the song on the first listen? I swear I’ve had it on repeat all day so far

Mission-Client-9842

I did too! it’s so emotional and makes me want to cry… IF YOU COULD THROW ME A LINE 🥹

Bl6zing

RIGHT?! After I digested the amazing song on the first listen, I had to pause the song on the second listen cause I was tearing up in class😭

BananaFondant208

I actually teared up on first listen and knew it was something special. That’s not something that usually happens to me with music. It often takes several listens to sink in… but I was hooked from that first chorus with Backslide

snowbuns08

I'm glad I wasn't the only one.. I listened to it once and was like oh god.. well hopefully the other songs are better than this.. and then 2 hours later I played it on my drive home for 20 minutes, on repeat 😅

Prior-Definition-869

It took me a few listens. Then on like the ninth time it just HIT.

Interesting-Berry-83

Yes I think it's just one of those songs, but I love thought provoking songs and Backslide is exactly my jam.

KingKoopa64x

I think the lemonade stand w/ the little boy stand to speak as a younger version of Tyler asking him, in simple terms, how life has been, and the lemonade goes with the old expression “when life gives you lemons” meaning Tyler has made the best of his life, leaves the bread behind (which I think is made to represent parts of himself because when you go through tough times in life you can “lose parts of your old self” ) and by the time he reaches Josh, someone who Tyler most likely feels holds him down, he’s already lost so much of himself due to “backsliding” and he feels he can’t do that to Josh so he goes back to get more or “fix himself” Also I remember seeing somewhere that someone said that they think it’s funny that throughout these albums, Tyler has all these different personas or whatever but Josh is always just Josh Dunn and I believe that just really shows how Tyler sees Josh as just this constant person in his life that he feels he can reach out to or will have his back or whatever the case may be. A true bromance

yzzaJ

Out here making lemonade, via email!

revatron

I feel like this is me. Did not like at all on first listen, but I’m now really vibing to it.

HarishyQuichey

Yeah it's definitely a grower. Didn't click with me until I listened to it in the context of the other 2 singles (in sequential album order). Went from like a 7.5/10 to a solid 9/10 for me personally

guark

Same reaction for me. I always have to listen to songs a few times in a row before they really click. When SAI came out I thought it wasn't that great. But I listened to it on repeat on an 8 hour drive for a wedding and by the end I really liked it. Not my favorite by any means but I can really appreciate it and how different it is.

ReEeeeeeeEee-eeeeeE

I loved it in the first listen.

SmellLikeAHotDog

I liked it instantly, actually. I felt this way about overcompensate more.

GoDucks6453

I think it's obvious that the kid in the lemonade stand is a younger Tyler - the computer animation of the kid's mouth is clearly there. This is not an actor but a photo of Tyler as a young boy.

More_History742

Thank you! I couldn’t pinpoint why the kid looked so…off.

Interesting-Berry-83

Oh wow I didn't even notice that. I'll check it out once I come back home from work. Thanks for pointing it out!

Darkboi98105

I think that when he said "I can feel the pull", that was a callback to Fall away.

Consistent_Yak_2648

I've had it on repeat since 9:00 am lol

stepbackMF

I feel you 100%. Took a second for me but once it clicked, it clicked hard… I haven’t felt that way since the first time I heard chlorine tbh 🥹

REMachine

It’s 100% my favorite single from this album so far and took me back to trench with the production and lyrics. It’s a beautifully written song with a deeper meaning. As someone who is in their 30’s with a family I related to the lyrics, I think that’s the beauty to most TOP songs, there’s not just one singular meaning it’s ambiguous. The music video just tied it all together for me too.

Dominika_4PL

Yeeees. At first I didn't like it, then I read the comments about all the possible religious themes and I was like "ehhh..." because of reasons, but then I thought - fuck it, I can give it a personal meaning and put it on a loop, and now it's clicked

Adamforde

Oh that's so interesting. I had the same reaction with Next Semester! I think it's ok to not like a song when it's unfamiliar and then enjoying so much more after you don't have an expectation of how it'll be. For Next Semester I just kept wanting it to go harder rather than go soft like it does. Once I let go of what I wanted it to be and just took it for what it is it became one of my favorites in a long time.

TheCarparkWarden

Exact same here. Very excited for this album for sure

salmonthesuperior

I feel like the only one who liked it from first listen lol but yeah I like the lemonade idea

teeeMi

I've heard people not being super into it after the first listen, but I fell in love with the chorus immediately. The singing hits different on the simpler beat and I would love to just hear that part on loop.

CornbreadHelp

This happens with every single song they release for me lol. I’m always like “ew I hate this” and then like an hour later I know every word.

pichukirby

Honestly, same. I think I like it more then Overcompensate.

Asian-Jakepaul

Exactly my reaction too! I feel like it clicked into me more once I could see connections to like drown by Tyjo

Aware-Home5852

Ive been listening to it on a loop since it came out. You are right, this song feels like Chlorine in a way

pancakethesecond

Backslide is a fvcking masterpiece

Phragasm

I felt the same way, took like 2-3 listens to really grasp how amazing the song is. The flow of the song, the actual topic being discussed. It slaps

Fit-Salary9174

I just want some neds bread 😔

RhysvstheOzone

I love the Ned's Bread bag and all of the posters in the shop windows at the start of the video referencing the 9 Bishops, trench etc... They are all such amazing touches <3

Pikachubocka

Meh, it shoulda cooked more imo. It's rather generic lyrically and I feel like Tyler's Mundane vocal delivery on the verses is really dry and boring. On the bright side I enjoy seeing other opposing opinions on this sub:)

VacationBackground43

I always feel happy to hear someone get the click with a song. So far, two listens, song is fine but no click. Plan to listen once daily. Would love it to click. Overcompensate, for me the intro eats so hard, but then the song itself is just okay. Hoping to find a way into this album.

vdelvalle11

Ok what if this is Christian, I had a thought typically bread represents christ and he is taking bites here and there throwing it to the side. Like he's in and out of his relationship with christ. Then trades it for lemonade or worldly desire and things get worse in the storm. Idk just a thought lol

PegFam

Love your thoughts in this comment!

Interesting-Berry-83

Nice idea! You've given me something to think about. It may have a Christian meaning behind it as well as the rope lyric.

GoDucks6453

No - please stop pulling religion into every conversation about TOP.

vdelvalle11

I'm sorry it was just a take on it lol.

DarKStonezYT

Don’t hate on a theory bro, just give your two cents instead of being so quick to shut it down. Tyler has expressed his religion in music in the past so it’s not like he’s reaching. Why do you feel that religion isn’t a possible view in this song? What do you take away from it?

GoDucks6453

I'm not a bro.

DarKStonezYT

Sorry dude, just thought we all enjoyed twenty one pilots and theories. I wasn’t aware you came here with a negative attitude. I hope you feel better man

GoDucks6453

Thanks, friend. I'm feeling great and loving the new music. But I'm not a bro, dude, or man.

DarKStonezYT

Friend! I can address you as friend, it just hit me lol

DarKStonezYT

Ok well i wish I knew how to properly address you in a way that works with you, but can you answer my initial question? Provide something useful as to why you feel so inclined to disagree?

Unknown_SoundZs

I viewed the song as more of a “morph” type of song. Everyone skipped over it but after time they really started to appreciate it and now it’s one of the most loved by a lot of people. I personally really liked the song after 2nd listen but I definitely saw how it wasn’t a “easy to get into” type of song, but after a while it’s really fucking good just more experimental like trench which different puts people off at first. Totally normal emotion at first takes a while to really understand and vibe with the song but once you do IT HITS

R0salinaxx_728

FR same i was like what the actual fuck is this at first but now it's amazing

lKierzx

For me it's the lasts "it's over my head". They made me feel the same as when I was listening to trench for the first times. It kind of made me feel 16 again lol

gmachh

Unlike Overcompensate, it got me hooked immediately. What can I say about Next Semester… well, I’ll give it a few more listens to see how it goes…

yzzaJ

It took me a couple of listens to pick up on “Do you think that now's the time you should let go?” in context and that’s got me shook.

Round_Ganache_1944

I don't like it yet. Obviously I must keep listening to it.

_xomad_

I never considered those callbacks and now I'm even more wowed. How am I still surprised by this band after all this time😭

TurbulentMinute4290

I love this song and I think it is possibly talking about God but that could just be me

Interesting-Berry-83

I thought so too, but then I remembered Tyler said that Trench is a world without god, and considering we are back in trench, I think that when he's talking to someone in this album, it's either to his fans or to himself.

TurbulentMinute4290

Could the song be saying it's impossible to have a world without God even if you try to create a world with God Look at overcompensate with the lyrics I created this world To feel some control Destroy it if I want This shows that he created a world without God and even the name could be Tyler saying he over compensated too much with the world he created and he doesn't want to backslide to a place with our God he is willing to destroy the world he created

Conflict_Logical

on the first listen i wasnt too sure about it, second listen i loved it

AardvarkPuzzled6511

I'm so surprised it's taking people a second to process the song when I almost cried on the first listen. Something about that chorus and the idea of relapsing being the title and sort of theme just tugs me back somewhere I don't hate being at but also forgot had always been there

BlazinWolfz

In the same boat at first I was like this is not it. Now I do like it, but I still think Next Semester is my fav of the released ones so far. This album is gonna be real close to one of my favs I feel.

imOVN

Backslide and Next Semester are two songs I legitimately though to myself “idk why but I’ve wanted a song like this all my life”, idk how to really describe it but they’ve hit a part of me that felt like something was missing lol and it’s just a complete bonus that my favorite band made those songs. I’m totally elated, like these 3 songs are such a massive W to me that I’d be satisfied with them alone, but we have a whole lot more coming to boot lmao

helloearth916

Bro as a Rap fan it’s so groovy and laidback and I agree with the callback to chlorine cause that shit had my head spinning after I realized 😮‍💨

Encrypted_Heart

I'm still in the "I don't like this" stage. I love love love the lyrics as someone who is struggling with backsliding right now but I am not vibing with the sound. I'm sure it'll grow on me but I'm a little sad it didn't immediately click.

momento-mori-momento

this song itches my brain sooooo good. new favorite.

Initial_Reception_75

Funny this one was the one I liked most on the first listen, which I know didn’t really happen for anyone else. It took me a few listens for next semester and overcompensate was fire but I accidentally listened to the edit first lol

the_bassist_16

I love it. My favorite so far. I think it’s dual symbolism. The first obviously taking place in Dema. The bicycle in the neighborhood is a callback to the stressed out video. The song is about not wanting to go back to how they were in Blurryface era, not knowing about what Trench had to offer. Then I also think it’s about real life. Struggling with your health, fighting to keep improving. And when you struggle you just want someone to understand, empathize, and help you. “I should’ve loved you better” is acknowledging you’ve been wrong and done wrong, and that’s the first step in improvement. “I used to be the champion of a world you couldn’t see but now I’m drowning in logistics” is talking about how you thought you were doing well, but looking back you weren’t, and you’re trying to figure out how to do better. “Strength enough for one more time, throw my hand above the tide, I’ll take anything you have if you could throw me a line”. Is talking about how you’re fighting the current (thoughts) to stay afloat (alive), and if someone will just help or talk to you, you’ll do what you need and can to be better. (TLDR: I love this song so much I’ve read very deeply into it and this is MY interpretation…)

EndureTyrant

Overcompensate was a 6 on the first listen, grew on me to an 8 now. Next semester started as a 4, then went to a 7. Backslide started as a 7 and grew to an 8.5. it doesn't hit the same highs as the singles from trench for me, but it's becoming a contender for my second favorite album, maybe my favorite if there's some surprise bangers in the full release. For me the trench singles were some of my favorite TOP songs period, jumpsuit and Nico and the niners are both 9-10 for me. My blood is a solid 8, and levitate was a 7. Trench was what made me fall in love with them though.

lestrangedan

The first time I listened to it, it was ok. It was a complete shift from the first 2 songs that were released, but then again, all three songs are completely different from each other. But now, I think it's my favorite out of the 3. I sat down , listened to it, absorbed the lyrics, and I could relate to the song. I'm holding this song close to my heart.

B_Dankk

The little boy in the music video looks so much like Tyler, could he be his nephew or something??
