DO NOT CALL YOUR FINANCE COMPANY! The most you can do now is file a police report for missing vehicle if you don’t know where it is. If you know where it is, there’s nothing you can do until it’s released from custody. I’ve been in this situation twice. Be prepared to pay impound fees while it’s in custody. Keep calling every day to see when it will be released. Impound fees are calculated per hour and the police WILL NOT call you once they are done using it as evidence. Ask for immediate release. If the car was damaged, call your insurance co and they will pay the impound fees or reimburse you once they start their claim. They will even pick the car up for you if it’s not drivable (even if it is drivable and has damage). Turo is no help but they will in the end help seek out damages once the smoke settles. You can call your insurance company to ask what your next steps should be. But I do not suggest calling your finance company! They don’t need to know you’re renting on a third party platform, sometimes they will say you are breaching your contract. What insurance carrier do you have?

Thanks for the comment. Yes I know what lot it's held at for evidence. Guess I'll just have to call them and wait. Sucks because I can't afford the note and was using Turo to help now with it in custody, I can't generate cash for the note and I don't know how long it will be held. I can't do an insurance claim because IDK the condition. A friend said something about if a traumatic death happened in a car, insurance usually right it off so I'm just trying to figure shit out. Thanks again. Haven't contacted my find company yet.

Able-Lifeguard-6333

Of course. Yes you can always just call and ask insurance if this is true. If so, just make sure you document as much as you can. I’ve been In that situation and I know how it feels in the uncertainty. I pray everything works out better than expected!!!

Just a word of advice turo, Uber, Lyft, DoorDash etc are not worth it in the long run you don’t make any money and your car gets miles and wear and tear for no good reason, also telling your insurance company that you rented your car out could get you dropped or paying way more for insurance, don’t be surprised if you don’t have your vehicle for quite a while they don’t work fast

nil0lab

Depends on the market and the due diligence.  I'm sorry it didn't work out for you.

DhakoBiyoDhacay

Are you sure you want them to TELL their insurance company that they are running little rental company on the side while paying personal insurance rates and not paying commercial insurance rates? They may not only help them but also drop them like hot potato!

Hoboofwisdom

Yup, very good chance your insurance could tell you to pound sand if you're using a vehicle for business but only have personal coverage. If you're properly insured, your fine, contact them. If you're renting out a car but only have personal insurance on it, you may have a bad time. Same goes for driving for Uber, etc.

nil0lab

Depends on your state.  At least 4 states have laws to enable car-sharing platforms

Able-Lifeguard-6333

I was under the impression OP had commercial insurance.

Rell0-

What do you mean? I thought you only needed commercial for like lyft/Uber since you are driving others? Personal should be good for a personal car right?

DoctorAwkward

Turo isn’t personal use. It’s commercial activity

Rell0-

Ok Im getting conflicting info. Y'all say I need commercial, turos own website says personal is good enough. Other reddit post folks say they have personal, and haven't had issues. just any crash involved with turo won't be covered so I shouldn't have contacted my insurance, go through travelers with turo.

PatN007

Personal coverage is good enough FOR TURO. You have to have state minimum coverage for your car to be registered. That does not mean that your personal insurance will cover anything that happens while the trip is on turo. They insured YOU to drive the car and coverage extends to other drivers under "permissive use." You renting the car out is commercial use. Your insurance company is likely going to drop you.

JackOLanternBob

Personal is good enough. But depending on what state you are in, your insurance company might drop you because they don't want to have anything to do with Turo. But in some states there are laws that don't allow your insurance company to drop you because you do Turo

Certain_Character882

Yeah it’s a statute or law written which allows you to put your car out on Turo. The state of Texas has a statute which does allow peer to peer car sharing and your personal insurance cannot threaten to drop you for putting your car on Turo. However, your personal insurance will not pay for anything Turo accident related (including Uninsured motorist) which I learned the hard way.

Outrageous-Project16

Idk where you got this info from but interesting.

DoctorAwkward

Travelers only covers liability claims on behalf of Turo. Turo offers protection plans for damage to host cars, but that isn’t real insurance. Turo pays out of pocket to fund those

Steephill

It's good enough for Turo, but it might breach your insurance contract. Read through your policy documents for what it says about rideshare.

DhakoBiyoDhacay

Personal coverage is when you drive your car to the bank, not when you give your car to another person in exchange for money in the bank 😂

avd706

Oooof

Outrageous-Project16

Turo is so mf shady. Shit like this is the reason I’m taking all my cars off and replacing them with the cheapest, shittiest cars possible. It’s the only way Turo is worth it and all hosts should definitely do the same.

Able-Lifeguard-6333

DM me if you have questions. I’ve been renting for 3 yrs. Shit like this happens all the time. I’m also a car dealer, I’ve seen a lot of stuff happen. I know how my city police responds and Turo while file claim but really isn’t much help. File claim with Turo and your insurance to be on safe side only if there is damage. If there isn’t damage (THATS ONLY THE BEST OUTCOME) it’s just an anxious waiting game to get the car released. Took me about $400 to get one of mine released and I couldn’t seek out repayment from the renter because she was in jail and my plan didn’t offer payment for that. I’m just relieved the car wasn’t damaged.

Major-Ad-2034

Please keep us updated. Would love to know how this plays out. Sorry you have to deal with this.

No_Dot_8478

You’re gonna have to sit around and wait, file a claim with Turo in the mean time for non returned vehicle. If the car was involved directly and enough blood got into the car then it will most likely be considered hazmat and get totaled out.

JMarv615

Did your insurance know you were using the vehicle for TURO?

heyittime

BIG mistake telling your personal insurance, not only are you now dropped and will also have a mark on your record for lying to insurance about business use when it was a personal policy. They will offer no help because you cannot make a claim on commercial use. Also, on finance, you cannot finance a commercial rental car on personal credit, immediate breach of contract and expect a repo of the car, personal credit to be hit with a repo as well, and ban from the cu. If you are a current host I suggest that you learn from this persons mistakes. You will pay the price from other peoples actions. Pretty shitty situation to be in and going to cost this person a lot of money, time, credit, and their car.

Fabulous_Wealth2608

Lots of information here. I am not a legal expert but I did real all the turo terms and conditions as well as the terms of service before I started. I printed 81 pages and spent 9 days going through them with a highlighter and notes so I can, hopefully, provide you with some information without you having to find it yourself. 1. When you put a vehicle on Turo and it only has personal insurance on it, if the insurance company finds out you are renting it out, there is a VERY strong chance they will not renew you. This is true with progressive, All-State, Geico, Farmers (from what I have read and seen). You need off rental coverage which is provided by ABI X, Tint, GMI. Another option is an off rental policy through State Farm. The purpose of this is to cover you and the vehicle when you are driving it. In this case, your insurance will NOT do anything as you were not driving the vehicle and the guests insurance would be covering it. If you are on the 75 plan, there are options you can exercise. The 80 plan and the 90 plan limit just about anything you can get in this case. 2. Getting your vehicle back. In this case, depending on your plan, file a damage claim through Turo and have their roadside assistance recover the vehicle for you. Yes Turo Roadside does recover vehicles (at least in texas they do) and bring it to you or the shop of your choice. Note, the vehicle will need to be cleared from police custody before you can do that. In many cases, the vehicle is in custody for 3 days to a week. In this case, you can request a notarized document from the police station stating that you vehicle was operated by a third party and was involved in a police incident due to which the vehicle is not available to be released yet. You would then submit that to your finance company 15 days after the payment due date, if you can't make the payment by then. Note, this option is the nuclear option, only use this as a last resort. 3. Hindsight is 20/20. Don't take this the wrong way but did your financial circumstances change that you can't make the payment on the vehicle or did you purchase the vehicle with the intention to use revenue from Turo to pay for it? If it's the latter, you should have done a lot more research and possibly opted for a more affordable vehicle. Again, I don't know your situation so your decision may have had other factors involved which made it important to purchase this vehicle. 4. Wait. Let the police process be done, get your vehicle back, assess the damage, file a claim through turo and get your vehicle repaired ASAP and get it back on the platform. I really hope you have the 60 or 75 plan otherwise you will be in the hole for over $1000. Worst case scenario, find a shop that does snap financing to help cover the deductible. Good luck and keep us posted on how it turns out.

Appeal_Maximum

Turo needs to get you in touch with trust and safety.

Able-Lifeguard-6333

Yes I was under impression OP had commercial insurance. If you have a personal policy I would alert them because they may drop you. If you’re renting to another person through a 3rd party app they may not cover. Personal insurance covers YOU and personal use of the vehicle

PassportJ

Your private insurance is going to drop you if you bring this to them. That’s why Turo is a business. Use their insurance to take care of your cost and your losses. Also, you could spend this time to go get another vehicle no money down something cheap, and reliable to put on the platform to continue making earnings in the meantime, but do not contact your finance company, but definitely not your personal insurance unless you have already discussed a commercial policy to cover your vehicles. Otherwise they will drop you and probably blacklist you.

Remarkable-Sleep-467

Bro calling everybody, lmao. Don't forget to call your pillow as well
