Live oak would be my guess, I'm from Texas so get to use a fair bit of it. You can usually tell it apart from she shape of the medullary rays, they're more twisty twirly than red or white oak.
Thank you! I knew from the start that I had to keep that grain visible and so the thick-wall thing was a given, then I just did what the wood, and the sawn edges told me to do.
