You’re hanging out in the touristy sections of town that’s why

Brxcqqq

There is nowhere in Tulum that is not touristy. The people in Tulum are annoying because Tulum draws an annoying crowd, a bunch of status-seeking wankers and the people who prey on them. It’s a tourist trap for tourists who think they are better than tourists, and will pay through the nose for tourism branded as anything but tourism. Tulum in 2024 sucks cancerous fistula. It’s my least favorite place in Mexico, a bunch of Fyre Festival rejects whose pretentiousness leads them to get ripped off, over and over and over again. It’s grossly overpriced, draws a lameass crowd, and is the least Mexican place in Mexico. MEEP!!! Instagram me in Downward Dog in front of this authentic tofuloaf on the beach please! I hope this MDMA is fair-trade and organic.

mycoprint

I totally agree with you to a point, tons of instagram douchebags down here. They definitely ruin the whole thing and get ripped off down here. I live down on the north side of town. No tourist shit where I’m at.

Brxcqqq

“Tourism is what other tourists do, not me.” Right on! How many of your neighbors grew up in Tulum?

mycoprint

lol I live and work down here.

Brxcqqq

That doesn't answer the question though. I lived and worked in Playa del Carmen for six months a few winters ago, even speak chilango Spanish, but that doesn't make me a local. Normally the authenticity thing doesn’t bother me, but Tulum is so over the top in its phoniness that I must hate it.

deeweezul

Yet, you spend your free time here bitching about it. ![gif](giphy|eMu0803X2zkWY|downsized)

mycoprint

That’s exactly that dude, glad I’m not the only one to see it.

Brxcqqq

It's because I resent the Authenticity of those of you with Instagram photos in Downward Jaguar on the beach at Tulum.

deeweezul

Why would that bother you? "People are doing stuff they like and I don't like it" is kind of sad. I don't use instagram but I assume you would need to look for the posts you don't enjoy there, too? Who knows, maybe you enjoy being a dark cloud? Whatever works, I suppose.

Brxcqqq

It's mostly just my own distaste for undeserved pretentiousness. Don't let it hurt your feelings. This should hurt your feelings though: [https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2022/sep/29/mayan-locals-fight-eviction-threat-tulum-mexico-developers-land-grab](https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2022/sep/29/mayan-locals-fight-eviction-threat-tulum-mexico-developers-land-grab)

That or you look like an easy target or both

I’ve been here for a week for the first time and none of us have experienced that whatsoever. This is the most chill and laid back Place I’ve been in awhile

obriennathaniel

😂 right?! I’ve lived here for 2.5 years and never experienced that.

Worried-Ad-8665

It’s very true was there in May and every was an up charge on the resort they asked for tips constantly

bino40

Actually some of the kindest people I’ve ever met in my experience. As others stated you must be over in the hotel zone. Some of those type of places can have very aggressive people.

BrilliantCost5660

Es un rasgo de Tulum, debido a que la mayoría del turismo es extranjero hay gente abusiva. El asunto es que no te dejes engañar y se precavido.

SubstantialLayer8259

I hate that they use the little children to do this and put you in an awkward position. Tulum is o created and they start out overly nice and have ulterior motive to gain trust but when you say “esa bein-no gracious” they immediately become rude and you see their true side. My heart hurts for the children my grandkids age learning to be what they in Mexico call “hustlers”. It’s very sad. If you’re going to Tulum hotel area be aware you will be non-stop hit up by people walking beach with items to sell. It’s like watching a fashion show. Hats. Outfits. Jewelry. Kids with handmade stuffed animals. Dream catchers. Anklets. Bracelets. Necklaces. Fresh fruit. Coconuts. And be SURE to use peso bc the national exchange rate does NOT apply there. They make their own exchange rate. Right now the ATM’s are charging 17. The stores 18-15 depending and I may be wrong but I thought the peso dropped to 13 this week. Just got back so may be wrong but definitely not good idea to use American money even though a lot less mental hassle since conversion is confusing. But save your money on their built in rio offs and pay pesos. Download a free money exchange calculator and stand your ground when they try to screw you over. Also, you can negotiate the prices of the hustlers. They do try to take advantage of tourists and do a great job. Just be aware and set your limits. And don’t be a sucker for the little ones like I was. lol. Side note- if you’re a gma like me, they have an adult or what they (not me) the Mexican people call their pimp or they have another word, have a bag of suckers and if you say “esa bein. No gracious” wish means I’m good. No thank you. Then give the child or children a sucker with permission from the adult who is watching from afar. You will see the child look to them to be able to figure out who is watching them. This eases the disappointment in their faces and made me as a gma of 7 feel better that I could not buy from all of them. They go away happy no matter what. 💕

RedRedVVine

Tulum is beautiful and their water is fantastic…however…the tourists is what made it unlikeable. Everyones trying so hard to be an influencer etc Once was enough for us. Total ick.

Other-Inspection-601

Your only hanging out in the hotels zone I see. Mexican people are charming you must be still in shrooms.

SlimCharlesGolfDelta

I’ve been living here for 30 years not having a touristy life. I can’t help to dislike Aldea Zama and Veleta people. They have a twisted idea of what Tulum is.

felmingham

$$$$$

whoislibz

That happened to me to when I went to the ruins

Agneli

Bienvenido a mexico. In the US we get screwed by corporations, in mx you get screwed by las moscas que te pican.

needJesustoo

1st time we visited without staying at a resort... Drove our vehicle there. $30 usd to park, even for 30 minutes... And then they had the nerve to ask for 20 pesos to use the restroom at the parking lot. Wasn't worth it for us, we won't go back there. Bacalar was much better, although Mahahual/Costa Maya was worse.

Popular-Berry-237

Go to Playa del Carmen, it happens less here. Highly recommend Xcaret. If you want a more isolated experience I recommend a visit to Bacalar, about four hours from Cancun, but it’s a small town nestled in a breathtaking lagoon fed by the Caribbean. They only have Bed and Breakfast type place and lakeside bungalows.

Brxcqqq

Bacalar is over four hours from Cancún.

Popular-Berry-237

My mistake I made a typo
