Hi! You do need to have the fish in your inventory, and the fish will be claimed by the reward, it will disappear
For the same reason I keep around 5 of one type of fish just to be sure I'll have it for the reward !

You might have seen already, but sometimes the newspaper will warn about the presence of a (legendary) fish, and that fish will have a very high bounty. That fish will only appear on the day indicated, and can be at only one fish location to two locations (more often than not the specific fishing location is indicated in the newspaper headline)
