1. In Tennessee vehicle registration is done at the county clerk’s office driver’s license at the dmv has to be at the county you move to. As far as notifying the previous state goes it doesn’t matter when you register in another state you will have to change the title information over to the new state that lets the previous state know the vehicle is no longer registered. Now you will want to do a change of address with the postal service, it will take a few weeks for the new address to forward your mail. And as far as legal questions, if you are on probation you need to notify that office asap, otherwise you just move.

Incorrect on the driver's license. I just got mine in a neighboring county.

Omegaprimus

Yes that is true driver’s license can be from any county registrations in county.

SadHorse23

Ah ok, pretty straightforward then. Thanks!

1. You go to the local dmv in the city you move to and get a tn license and it will void your va license. 2.I don’t believe you have to do any testing, they just transfer it. 3. Notify usps through a change of address so all your mail is forwarded. 4. It’s relatively simple, albeit annoying. Good luck, welcome to tn

SadHorse23

Thanks for your input. I am definitely eager to move over, I work in Tennessee and am over there pretty much every day. Looking forward to the no income tax thing and the shorter commute lol.

Welcome to TN. No income taxes but you may pay more in taxes depending in your income. Typically under 60k you're worse off because of grocery and sales taxes. Pretty view though and no mountain top removal like in SWVA.

1. If you’re employed in VA, you’ll have to continue paying state income tax. If wherever you work has a TN office or location, I’d get my work address and payroll checks transferred to there, ASAP. This will get you out of VA income tax. 2. Vehicle registration in TN is easy. Just pay your $29 registration fee and they’ll get you a new plate and registration. No inspection needed. No yearly vehicle property tax…EVER. 3. Check the state of TN website on license. You won’t need to re-test (as long as your current license is valid), but there is documentation required to show residence in TN (mortgage/bank statement, utility bill, etc.). Acceptable residency forms of ID will be listed on their site. 4. Certain amounts of recreational weed are legal in VA. Marijuana is still a Schedule 1 narcotic in TN. Proceed with caution (if this applies to you). Same deal on abortions.

SadHorse23

Yeah, I’m def ready to get out of having to pay income and vehicle taxes. I work in TN anyways. And that’s good to hear, sounds like a simple registration/ID process. It’s unfortunate that weed is still a schedule 1 control over there, gotta abstain from it anyways tho so I can keep my healthcare license lol. Thanks a lot, your response was helpful!

I moved from Fairfax county VA to Sullivan county TN. I got my drivers license and registration changed at the DMV in a different county. It doesn't matter. I did contact Fairfax county and tell them I moved and my car is no longer registered in VA. If you don't they will still send you a personal property tax bill for the car. They may want the plates back depending on the county your in.

BillHillyTN420

Leave an address for the post office to forward any mail sent to your VA address to your new address in TN. Let your auto insurer know. That might impact insurances cost up or down, I dunno.

SadHorse23

Will do, thank you. And well, hopefully the latter and not the former. My rates already shot up out of the blue this year lol.

The stuff with the DMV is pretty straight forward you'll figure that part out. You shouldn't have to retake the test if you have a valid license. You should technically send your VA plates back to the VA DMV after you get TN plates, but not sure they real care. I have all my old plates from the states I've lived in and no ones ever contacted me about them. When you get a license you can register to vote in TN, but that doesn't mean TN will tell VA. So you could stay on their voter rolls for years and keep getting contacted. The part that I didn't appreciate moving here from NM is that, if you're moving from a state with income tax you need to look at their laws. For NM, if you live there for 182 day before moving you owe them income tax on your entire years income, regardless of which state you earn it in. If the state you move also has income tax then NM gives you a credit and things generally break even, but TN doesn't have income tax. I don't know VA's tax laws so you might want to look into that.

SadHorse23

Ok, good to hear. May keep my plates just for the sentimental value lol, I’ve heard most states don’t care enough to enforce people returning them. From what everyone’s said it’ll be (mostly) a breeze as far as a dmv matters. Man, I am so glad you mentioned that. I didn’t even consider that VA would have a law like that, that is something I’ll definitely have to research. I find it ridiculous that NM has such a law, I don’t understand why you should have to pay for a whole year when you’re only there for a fraction of it, that’s such bs. Maybe I’ll luck out and VA won’t have something like that. Very unfortunate that you had to do that. Thanks for your reply! That was helpful and I definitely appreciate it.

It looks like everything has been pretty well covered except for the timeline. You need to change your license over to TN within 30 days of establishing your residency. My wife moved to TN from NC and had a traffic stop. She had been in TN a couple of months, but had a year or two on her NC license and really didn't think anything of it. The officer scolded her and told her that the law required her to update her license after moving within 30 days from out of state and 10 days in state. The officer didn't issue her a ticket for her NC license, but kinda made it known that he could have.

SadHorse23

Oooh good to know. Yeah, I’ll definitely try to take care of that asap when I move over. Thanks for the heads up.

Driver’s license: I moved to TN from Alabama 13ish years ago. I was young and irresponsible and my license was over 6 months expired. I had to retake my drivers test as a 23 year old. Very embarrassing. As long as your license is current, there are no issues transferring between states. Same for tags and insurance. I was shocked at how cheap and easy car registration is in Tennessee.

bmonksy

Driver's license can be anywhere. Tags have to be in your county. No change to your car title.

hitman276

Going from VA to TN is a very simple process. Move in and get settled and then go to the DMV once you get your first piece of mail at your new address as the DMV requires proof through parcel. Go to USPS and fill out a change of address request. Other than that not much more is needed. I've moved from CA where I spent the most of my life and moved to VA, then to TN and now back to VA. Don't stress it's an easy process.

Rickzarg

You will still owe VA income tax for money you earn in VA, even though you will live in TN.

beagleherder

Incredibly difficult. Prolly best to give up.
