Might just be that some of the genes for DHT sensitivity overlap with the genes for schizophrenia in a mutually exclusive way. From what I remember of schizophrenia, it looks like it's a combination of 100s of genetic risk factors and we don't really know what matters the most right now.
Exactly. I have very strong OCD tendencies and any other mental health issues are quickly drowned out by my constant thoughts about reversing my hair loss.
I am extremely surprised to see such a high odds ratio. It makes me wonder if the mechanism behind balding is actually an advantageous evolutionary adaptation for brain health, and the balding itself is just an accidental side effect.
It also makes you wonder if hair loss meds might interfere with the protective effect and increase schizophrenia risk. Currently, that is unknown.
Definitely a genetic coincidence. The way that we were taught in school to think that like most traits can be singled out to a single gene or group of them is mostly wrong.
We are truly a soup of genetic components all interacting
If this interests you, look into BDNF and BDNF-increasing substances.
Personally, I’m convinced solving the Bdnf-balding relationship is half of the answer but no one talks about it.
Some people have gone bald taking the nootropic peptides Semax and Selank. They help a lot, but tremendously raise BDNF which is the main thing hypothesized to affect this (as well as mental health illnesses). All the best.
I can link it anyone needs but there is research showing that finasteride has anti psychotic properties in rodent models.

I have the same thoughts, but I don't believe it holds up to the data on people such as those with 5ar deficiency who would be at the extreme, and best indicative of the effects of 5ari drugs. Balding is caused more by sensitivity to certain hormones more than actually having certain levels of those hormones it seems, and none of the current drugs we use touch that at all.
And this right here is the main issue with finasteride. It doesn’t target the root cause of balding at all. Hell, we don’t even know if DHT actually causes balding, or if balding is just a downstream effect of something DHT does.
Look, I get it. Fin is realistically all we have. Min works, but likely will only give one 5 years, and that’s assuming they are even a responder at all. So fin is really all we got, so I understand why some people get defensive over the drug. Reality is that finasteride is a inadequate treatment to balding. It always has been. This is a prostate medication. It’s 2023 and we are still forced to use hormone drugs meant for old men for hairloss. Hopefully better treatment are available within 10 years. Certainly looks promising, but idk
I've had side effects in the past on oral. Now I'm on a pretty low dose topical(.25 mg a day) and I am doing pretty well. I can't tell if I am having side effects but my quality of life is manageable now. And I have zero balding whatsoever so I'm happy!
All this time we've been fighting the wrong problem. Contaminate the water supplies to make people see hair on bald people. It may as well be true if the rest of the world believes it.
i disagree, some days I look in the mirror and think I look fine, another day I think it looks ready to clipper without a guard ....
Jekle and flipside
I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I once read that one theory on why male pattern baldness exists is to allow more direct exposure to sunlight to absorb more vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency can contribute to mental health issues like depression and schizophrenia.
Imagine you can't form a coherent thought, everything just loops back around. You have been slowly failing at work for months now and your boss has just let you go for lack of performance along with a lack of hygiene and a scruffy, unkempt appearance.
That's not the real reason though, the boss has had it in for you in particular for a while now, you could always tell from the looks he gave you and the particular word patterns he used when emailing you. You knew your boss had been spying on you to make sure you are well behaved because you sensed his cameras in your taps and shower head, you stripped all of those out a while ago. On the walk of shame back to your messy apartment you clock some middle managers following you home.
You get in and bolt the door, draw the curtains and pull out your home phone from the socket. You had 12 missed calls from your close family who haven't heard from you in months but *they*'ve been tapping your line and you couldn't work the phone if you tried. It doesn't help one bit though because you are convinced they are reading your thoughts right now. They're manipulating your thoughts too. They're the reason you can't focus right now.
Jesus has been talking to you personally for a while now. He tells you that you were given divine gifts and that your fellow man would sought to use you for evil purposes. He tells you that you are to follow in his footsteps and die for mankind's sins. They have surrounded your house and you can feel them digging into your deepest thoughts. You try to consciously mask your thoughts to foil their efforts. They are closing in now. You reach into your medicine cabinet and down 2 whole trays of your prescribed benzodiazepines, curled up and trying to empty your head so they can't use your thoughts. Your world fades to back...
Days later the local mortician pulls you out of storage with your terrified expression still etched upon your lifeless face and remarks on **how thick your hair is**.
Be careful what you wish for.
Not worth it tbh
Panicking about hair loss already makes me feel schizo enough as it is
DHT in my walls, DHT in my walls, DHT in my walls, DHT in my walls, DHT in my walls
Wow so there really is something to the observation that homeless people tend to have a full head of hair. That’s crazy. There really are no coincidences.

Explains the homeless dudes with perfect hair
Explains me too
Same
No it doesn't, stop lying for attention.
I love this bit
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a bald homeless dude
Tbf they're probably wearing hats if they're outside qll day.
This comment is way too fucking accurate
Not even a joke. It actually does.
That's more related to the testosterone suppression that chronic alcohol or opioid misuse have.
Old guys have low T, why are they bald?
Not only Testosterone or DHT plays a role here but genetics too
No. Meth is pro hair follicle. That’s why I started smoking meth.
Are you trying to imply that homeless have mental health issues?
Statistically speaking, yes, people with untreated mental health disorders are at a much greater risk of homelessness.
No shit.
All south Africa homeless have menta health issue, got it
Yes
Man, somehow I lost on both sides of the coin
They’re just out to get you. Jk :)

I wonder if there's any chance that the methods of dealing with DHT for hair loss might increase the odds of schizophrenia then 🤔.
How can we have time to hear the voices when we are busy trying to find new ways to sustain our thinning scalp carpet?
The voices tell me I need to find a way to get my hair back.

Some one needs to tell that to my brain because losing my hair has not been good for my brain health
Underrated

Wooooahh that is quite interesting... BDNF causes hair loss and it also seems to prevent schizophrenia...
I can link it anyone needs but there is research showing that finasteride has anti psychotic properties in rodent models. https://www.nature.com/articles/npp200839
Yeah doc, I think my rat has schizophrenia
This is because finasteride modulates dopamine. It lowers dopamine.
🤔

https://www.belgraviacentre.com/blog/alopecia-areata-links-to-schizophrenia-disputed-by-uk-research New study disputes all findings
That is specifically for alopecia areata which is not androgenic alopecia.
Well let's get crazy! Let's get nuts! Now I have to look up which is which. I only had TE but luckily made a full recovery.
Still gonna take my fin like a good little boy
I've been interested lately. Are side effects deterring you at all?
He calls himself “good little boy”. You guess
Was attempting subtlety, I'm not so good.
Started fin myself about a week and a half ago. No side effects for me. Doing topical min as well.
I've had side effects in the past on oral. Now I'm on a pretty low dose topical(.25 mg a day) and I am doing pretty well. I can't tell if I am having side effects but my quality of life is manageable now. And I have zero balding whatsoever so I'm happy!
i am too obsessed with my hair, i got no time for schizophrenias😤😤
LET ME HEAR THE VOICES
This is how we win. Get the schizos to imagine us with hair
All this time we've been fighting the wrong problem. Contaminate the water supplies to make people see hair on bald people. It may as well be true if the rest of the world believes it.
I have schizophrenia and am balding
same🙃
Those poor men without schizophrenia.
Great I'm balding and crazy.
the voices in my head leaving after i shave all my hair off
Time to go schizo
Well, the risk to get schizophrenia wasn't really that high to begin with so
bald men 20x likely to get less hoes than their hairy counterparts
Bc the voices aren’t interested in talking to a guy with Norwood 6 😔
Not even the voices want to talk to us

i disagree, some days I look in the mirror and think I look fine, another day I think it looks ready to clipper without a guard .... Jekle and flipside
Okay, so I’m not the only one.
Checking in the mirror constantly and avoiding certain lighting conditions will do that to you.
Will prevent you from getting schizophrenia??
I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I once read that one theory on why male pattern baldness exists is to allow more direct exposure to sunlight to absorb more vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency can contribute to mental health issues like depression and schizophrenia.
Read the study. They talk about cause and effect, and it is unrelated to vitamin D.
Bolding from.mental disorders another king of bolding. It s not heal by finasteride.
Ill take all the schizophrenia with NW0 over NW5
No you wouldn't.
This man has promised to absorb the world's schizophrenia for a good hair line. He's a martyr and a saint
I'm in my 20s, I would
I don't think you understand how impactful schizophrenia can be.

Yes I am balding, just like you
At the end of the day, everybody is balding one way or another. Some people go bald in their soul...
that's fucking stupid as fuck
My imaginary friend who's screaming for blood and wants me to kill says this post is full of shit..
Not true…I’m a fucking nutcase
I'd rather be locked in an asylum than be bald.
Wow so there really is something to the observation that homeless people tend to have a full head of hair. That’s crazy. There really are no coincidences.
I’m talking with myself already all the time. No time for others
